Seasonal Crowds

The crowds are at the lowest in the “o " season” between September andNovember, just before the Holiday entertainment kicks into high gear. While mostWestern tourists will visit the parks in the pleasant summer months of May –

August, the month of August is even more crowded due to the fact that mostFrench are given the month o " , allowing them to freely tour their country or travelabroad. While most French ock to Southern France to enjoy the beaches, more

than a fair share of families make their way to Disneyland Paris Resort. The crowdstaper again in late December, when the cold weather makes the parks beautiful,yet a little too cold to experience. January through April are light on crowds againuntil Spring Break, then you just have a couple weeks to experience the parkswithout major crowds until the summer season begins.

The “Slow Season”

If you’re visiting the theme parks during a slow time of year, such as summer, you’llbe treated with far lesser crowds. While this may make for a more pleasant visit,there are some trade-o " s. The weather may not be ideal, and many of the biggestentertainment o " erings, including reworks and parades, aren’t available duringthe o " -season (except on weekends). Disneyland Parc Paris also routinely closessome attractions during the o " -season, most notably Casey Jr. Circus Train, Le

Pays des Contes de Fees and Les Mysteres du Nautilus. The Autopia was also routinely closed during the o " -season, but thistrend seems to be reversing these last few years. Of all the Disneytheme parks worldwide, the management in Paris is notorious foroperating most attractions in the o " season with limited hours,

hours di " erent than previously posted, or all together closing (ornot closing) some attractions on a daily basis. While we checkwith the parks every week to ensure our Attraction Closures liston theCaliforniaSource.tumblr.com is accurate, the fact is thatthis list will not always reect what is happening in the parks. Thebest bet, if you’re exible in your French touring plans, is to checkat the parks the morning before buying your tickets to make surenothing major is unexpectedly closed, such as Tower of Terror orPhantom Manor.

Aside from this, there’s also the issue of attraction refurbishmentschedules. Several big name attractions may be closed for weeksat a time to be refurbished or modied; while the parks will postthis information at the entrance, it is disappointing to learn that“it’s a small world” or Space Mountain are closed unexpectedly.To help you prepare for this, we check in with the theme parks ona weekly basis to obtain a list of their currently closed attractionsand upcoming attraction refurbishments. These are posted on oursite (again, to the best of our abilities), guidebooks.co/updates,under Attraction Closures.

The weather patterns in most of France, including Paris, follow the expectedweather protocol that many in The United States are familiar with. That is, summeris warm and tourist-heavy, winter is beautiful yet cold, and spring and fall are bothdened times of the year when the crowds are light to medium and the weathercan’t be beat.

Rainfall in Paris

Paris, like London, is often gloomy. It’s not always cold though,and the rain in the summer can lead to some rather stickyhumidity. The rainfall averages between 4 and 5 1⁄2 inches everymonth in Paris, with the exception of September and October,which enjoys an average rainfall of just under 4 inches.

If it rains during your theme park visit, you’ll quickly nd aplethora of Disney Parks-branded ponchos appear for salearound every corner (they seem to come out of nowhere) in bothDisneyland Parc Paris and Walt Disney Studios Parc. If you’retouring the sights in Paris, you’ll have no trouble nding ponchosin many of the souvenir shops around the area. One new safetyadvantage of the Disney Parks-branded ponchos is that they areclear; if you’re traveling with children, you’ll still be able to

recognize them by their clothing – they won’t be lost in a sea ofyellow.

In my experience, ponchos aren’t always a good idea for rainyweather, especially when walking around the theme parks. Why?Rain, especially in Paris, gets extremely humid. The plasticponchos act as your own personal greenhouse environment.

Look around at the faces of the poncho-laden during rainy daysat Disneyland, and you’ll quickly see groggy, tired anduncomfortable folks who just don’t seem to feel good. Personally,rainy days are some of my favorites in the parks because thecrowds often stay away – while you do sacrice some

entertainment options and select rides are closed when it rains –the freedom to ride Space Mountain: Mission 2 repeatedlywithout a wait more than makes up for it.

To get around the “gross” feeling of wearing your owngreenhouse, I highly recommend wearing sturdy, comfortableshoes (not canvas shoes), a hat, and dressing in layers. Thelayers will help keep your skin dry without making you hot and

humid (no promises though in the summer, when it’ll be massivelyhumid no matter what you wear!). A scarf is a great idea to helpkeep cold breezes o " the neck. Doing this will help keep you andyour family going strong on a rainy day while everyone else iswalking around in a plastic covering (and while some books andexperts recommend making your own poncho by cutting headand arm holes in a plastic bag, don’t do this: it’s not any morecomfortable, rips easily, and is horribly tacky – especially whenlooking back at family trip photos).

From the Airport

Disneyland Paris is serviced by Charles de Gaulle Airport. It takes approximatelyforty minutes by car to get from the airport to Marne La Vallee, the home ofDisneyland Paris. Paris’ famous network of metro trains allows you to get to theResort quickly and easily by boarding the RER A Metro towards Marne La Vallee.There is also an RER A Metro towards Boissy Saint Leger; don’t board the wrongtrain. The Marne La Vallee-Chessy Station sits in the center of The Disneyland

Paris Resort development, providing easy access to the two parks, Festival Disneyand all hotels. Paris Shuttle provides private and direct service between the airportand the Resort for a nominal fee.

From Around Paris & Europe

The Disneyland Paris Resort is easily accessed via the metro and TGV systemthroughout all of Paris and much of Europe. If you’re coming from an area outsideof Paris, or from a di " erent country, simply head in towards Paris, then nd theadjoining train on the route to take you to the Marne Le Vallee-Cheesy Station,which is where you will exit.

The Disneyland Paris Resort includes seven on-site hotels. Staying on-site at theDisney property has some denite benets, but it's not as necessary as stayingon-site at the massive Walt Disney World complex, where hundreds of acresseparate hotels and theme parks, and indeed, the whole of Walt Disney World fromthe outside world. In Paris, things are di " erent; Disneyland Paris Resort is isolatedfrom the City of Paris and set in the town Marne-le-Vallee, though the theme parksand Resort Plaza are easily accessed from the City Centre via the metro. Thehotels around the theme parks, even the very close ones, usually o " er free shuttles

to Disneyland Paris Resort Plaza.

While you'll undoubtedly save money staying o " -site, staying on the Disneyproperty brings some added benets to your vacation. While you'll of course bewrapped in the “middle of the magic” as it were (some rooms feature views of theDisneyland reworks), staying at the hotels also o " er you Extra Magic Hour.Exclusive to on- property guests, Extra Magic Hour provides a one-hour early-entry program into either Disneyland Parc Paris or Walt Disney Studios Park

(alternating days) for the entirety of your stay (with valid park admission) .

The agship hotel of the Resort is The Disneyland Hotel , a majestic 496-roomVictorian hotel that serves as the main entrance to Disneyland Parc Paris. The

Hotel New York , designed by famed architect Michael Graves, features 565rooms in a 1950s Art Deco urban style, and is situated near Disney Village. The

nautical-themed Disney’s Newport Bay Club o" ers a quietcoastal New England vibe and a sprawling 1,096-room layout.Nearby, also situated near the picturesque Lake Disney and

convenient to Disney Village, is Disney’s Sequoia Lodge , an American National Parks-themed 1,011-room resort. Situated

about a ten minute walk from the theme parks, Disney’s HotelCheyenne is themed to an Old Western town set in the middle of

a lush pine forrest, and features 1,000 rooms. Next door, Disney’s

Hotel Santa Fe sports a rural 1950s American Southwest moteltheme, with neon signs and cacti decorating the exterior of its

1000 rooms. Finally, Disney’s Davy Crockett Ranch o" ers oneand two-bedroom cabins situated in various wooded areas

around the Resort.

There's nothing worse than standing in the middle of the park, starring at yourmap, trying to gure out where to go next while others race and zoom around you.

A trip to Disneyland Paris is an expensive and time-consuming endeavor; youdon't want to waste your time (and therefore, money) trying to decide what youwant to do. Every attraction entry in this book comes with family information: we'lltell you who a particular attraction is ideal for and who it isn't so ideal for.

To get started, take these basic questions into consideration before you leave for

your trip.

Get the input of any family members and friends you'll be traveling with to ensurethings go smoother when you're actually at Disneyland (a specic touring planmight sound nice at home, but it can be tempting to keep everyone on track oncein the park).

// Question 1: Who Is Going to Disneyland with You?

Worded di " erently, this could be “Who is the main focus of the trip?” WhileDisneyland and Walt Disney Studios Park o " er something for everyone, someattractions will be less appealing to some than others. Are you taking youngerchildren? You'll want to begin your day with Dumbo the Flying Elephant and PeterPan's Flight. Are you traveling with tweens or teens, or young adults? You'll wantthe focus to be on Disney's more thrilling and high- tech options, such as Star

Tours and Rock ‘n Roller Coaster Are you traveling withgrandparents or disabled guests who may not want to get jostledand bumped? Milder attractions like The Haunted Mansion andshows like CineMagique will be ideal.

// Question 2: What Are the “Must-See” Attractions?

You're probably going to be most interested in the newestattractions at the parks since your last visit. The brand-newesto" ering at Disneyland Paris is Ratatouillie: L’Aventure Totalementde Toquee Remy at Walt Disney Studios Park. However, if you'vebeen to Disneyland Paris before, you're likely to have specicthings in mind you want to do. These may be major things, suchas riding Indiana Jones: Et la Temple du Peril or Space Mountain:Mission 2. They may be classic things like walking throughSleeping Beauty Castle at night while listening to “When YouWish Upon A Star,” or reliving old memories on Astro Orbitor.Whatever it is, remember it's your vacation – make time for thesespecial, little moments that mean something to you. Likewise, askyour traveling companions what's on their “must-see” list.

// How Long Do You Have at Disneyland?

We recommend at least two days at The Disneyland Resort; onefor each park. Ideally, three to four days during the slower seasonand four to ve days during the busier seasons should besecured. If you visit for four days or more, we recommend taking

a half-day break at your hotel's pool to rejuvenate; Disneyland,especially when crowded, can be taxing.

// What Time of Year Are You Going?

Read the above section “The Seasons – What to Expect” when

determining what time of year you should visit Disneyland inregards to weather, crowds, and attraction and entertainmentavailability. DisneylandParc Paris -

An Overview



Disneyland Parc Paris opened in 1992 under the name Euro Disneyland.Consisting of the singular Disneyland-style park and several hotels, the EuroDisneyland Resort was developed by Euro Disney SCA, a business union betweenthe French government and The Walt Disney Company. Disney’s rst and, so far,only venture into the European theme park market, this was the fourth resort built,and only the second to be built outside of The United States (the rst being TokyoDisneyland).

Once past The Disneyland Hotel and through the Main Entrance tunnels, guestsstep into the turn-of-the-century world of Main Street, U.S.A. Featuring acharming collection of restaurants and boutiques, guests can venture to other

parts of the park via The Disneyland Railroad – Main Street Station or travel to

Central Plaza aboard one of the Main Street Vehicles . Once in the center of thepark, adventures for explorations, storybook adventures, and space travel abound.

Frontierland takes guests into the mysterious world of Thunder Mesa , where

runaway mine trains sweep through Big Thunder Mountain and macabre legendshaunt Phantom Manor .

Nearby, Adventureland is lled with exotic and exciting journeys, from the

swashbuckling jollies of Pirates of the Caribbean to the daring explorations at

Indiana Jones & The Temple of Peril . In the center of the land, Adventure Isle

allows guests the ability to explore Skull Rock and the more

mischievous portions of Neverland in-depth. The crown jewel of

the park, Fantasyland , is lled with storybook adventures andenchanting journeys to the world of imagination. One of the most

popular attractions in the park is Casey Jr., La Petite Train du

Cirque , a brisk ride through Storybook Land. Nearby, “it’s asmall world” o " ers a harmonious and enchanting cruise aroundthe world.

Voyages into space can be found in the retro-futuristic

Discoveryland , home to such out-of-this-word adventures as

Space Mountain: Mission 2 and Star Tours .

Disneyland Paris was designed in a decidedly elegant andengrossing lush European style. The over-the-top design

culminated in the park’s majestic centerpiece, La Chateau de la

Bell au Bois Dormant . This park, overseen by former DisneyCEO Michael Eisner, spared hardly any expense during its initialdevelopment; Eisner and his team of Imagineers were aiming tobring Disney parks to a new level. While the design was no lessthan impressive, the park met with resistance from Europeansand the local French people, decrying the increased saturation of

American culture. This, combined with Paris’ rather unfavorableweather in the winter months, kept the crowds away. In anunprecedented event for Disney, the park was facing bankruptcyand losing money at an alarming rate.

A modest restructuring of Euro Disney SCA, and a largeinvestment by Saudi Arabian Prince Alwaleed, led to the park’srescue during the struggling early years. Many pointed to theover-building of unoccupied on-property Disney hotels as themajor drain of nances; Eisner, however, saw the problems as a

direct result of the ornate details of the park. As a result, Eisnerchanged the way his theme parks were built, hitting for much-more modest aims (Disney’s California Adventure in 2001, HongKong Disneyland in 2005), unless investment from anothercompany was involved (as was the case for Tokyo DisneySea).

Right after the investment and restructuring, Euro Disneyland wasrebranded as Disneyland Paris, an e " ort to make the worldwide

public more aware of the park’s location and to distance itselffrom the negative publicity of the past. The e " ort seems to haveworked, and new attractions were quickly added to help increaseoverall capacity of the park; several walk-through attractions werea part of these additions, including larger attractions down theroad. Now, Disneyland Paris is the most visited tourist destinationin France, and one of the most popular in Europe.

Chapter 3

Main Street,U.S.A. - AnOverview



Main Street, U.S.A. is a turn-of-the-century American main street with Midwestair. Designed as a more ornate version of the original Disneyland’s Main Street,the concept was based on Walt Disney’s boyhood hometown of Marceline,Missouri. Serving as the grand entrance to Disneyland Parc, Main Street is lledwith unique shops and restaurants that ank either side of the street. After passing

through the Main Entrance turnstiles, guests are rst greeted by the Victorian Main

Street Station of The Disneyland Railroad . It is here that guests can take around-trip tour of the park, or stop in Frontierland, Fantasyland or Discoveryland.

At this point, Main Street is divided into three distinct sectors. The rst, Town

Square , lies directly in front of Main Street Station, and is where you can nd City

Hall and other park services. After the main drag of shops and restaurants,

Central Plaza stands as the main hub of the park, directly in front of La Chateaude la Belle au Bois Dormant. From Central Plaza, guests can easily access

Adventureland, Frontierland, Fantasyland and Discoveryland.

A fun option for getting from Town Square to Central Plaza is aboard the MainStreet Vehicles , which include the Horse-Drawn Streetcar and Fire Engine .

Another option is passing through one of the two visually rich arcades on either

side of Main Street (a handy option in the event of inclement weather). Liberty

Arcade , on the west side, features a tableaux depicting the grand dedication of

Take a grand-circle tour of Disneyland Paris or stop in Frontierland, Fantasyland orDiscoveryland.

// When to Visit

Besides being a classic attraction, The Disneyland Railroad is a great method forgetting around the park. This comes in especially handy when tired small childrenare in tow or during parade times (when crossing the parade route to get to theother side of the park can be a hassle). Both Main Street and Fantasyland Stations

are traditionally the busiest, especially just after parade times. If you aren’t usingthe railroad for transportation and just want to enjoy a tour of the park, hop on atFrontierland Depot or Discoveryland Station for a shorter wait.

// Family Info

Kids love riding trains; this one is no di " erent. It may prove to be a challengethough to keep them from wanting to get o " at every stop to go and check out

what they can see from the train! Older guests who have fond memories of otherDisney theme parks will also appreciate the adventure.

narrow walkways. Wheelchair and ECV users must request around-trip as the devices cannot be stored onboard.

// Elijah’s Review

An integral piece of the ever-active environment of a true turn-of-

the-century main street, these vehicles add not only atmosphereto the main entrance of the park but also transportation forguests. There are four options available for transportation: theHorse-Drawn Streetcar, Fire Engine, Omnibus and HorselessCarriage. On busier days all four of these vehicles operate, whileslower days only two of these vehicles operate (usually theHorse-Drawn Streetcar and Fire Engine).

Unless previous arrangements have been made with the driver,these vehicles operate as one-way only transportation betweenthe south side of Main Street (Town Square) and the north side(Central Plaza); this is in front of Main Street Station and LaChateau de la Belle au Bois Dormant, respectively. While all ofthese vehicles are fun to ride, usually the Horse-Drawn Streetcarsand Omnibus are the most enjoyable, as the other two are littlemore than fanciful cars.

// Variations

The Main Street Vehicles may also be found at the originalDisneyland Park, The Magic Kingdom in Orlando, and at HongKong Disneyland. Tokyo Disneyland features the single-stopOmnibus attraction in the Central Plaza portion of World Plaza. A

similar attraction, Big City Vehicles, may also be found in the American Waterfront district of Tokyo DisneySea.

This ornate, immensely detailed walkway is not without astoryline, either. Banners and bulletins throughout the walkwayherald the grand opening of New York’s Statue of Liberty – a gift

to The United States of America from the French. This isculminated in a short show in the center of the street, known asLiberty Tableau. Through this exhibit, guests can feel as if theywere present for the grand statue’s unveiling. This small area isoften missed; you may even have to ask a nearby cast memberfor the location of it. Beyond this, the town of Thunder Mesa beckons guests with tales of hauntedhouses, runaway mine trains, and genuine steamboat adventures. Dominating an

island in the middle of the Rivers of the Far West is the fast- paced adventures of

Big Thunder Mountain , a runaway mine train adventure. Encircling the island, the

Molly Brown and Mark Twain steam paddlewheelers both depart from Thunder

Melanie Ravenswood was once a charming and beautiful younglady who captured the hearts of the local miners in the town. Oneman in particular caught her eye, and she became engaged. Theyoung couple made plans to marry and leave Thunder Mesa; thisact would leave Melanie’s father all alone. It was no secret amongthe townspeople that her father was extremely jealous and lledwith hate for the miner. Speculation about the extent of this hategrew after the groom failed to show up on the wedding day, neverto be heard from again. It is believed that the miner’s spirit hauntsPhantom Manor and that Melanie herself can be seen wanderingthe halls of the large house in her wedding dress, eternally waitingfor a day that will never arrive.

Inside, guests are invited to explore the rooms of Phantom Manorfor themselves. After entering an unnerving room where the wallsactually stretch, guests board “Doom Buggies”, special vehiclesdesigned for a tour of the estate. Along the way guests visit theatrium, inner hallways, Melanie’s dressing room, and the atticbefore visiting the Thunder Mesa cemetery out back.

Phantom Manor is a new take on the classic Haunted Mansionattraction, popularized at the original Disneyland in the late1960’s. The original storyline of Haunted Mansion was a bitmacabre – a tale about a jealous husband who murdered hisancé when he wrongly thought she was cheating, followed by asuicide in the attic by hanging. This was played down a bit for the

song, “Grim Grinning Ghosts”, as well as various sight gags. Thisfun approach to an otherwise gruesome tale was continued inHaunted Mansion incarnations in Florida and Tokyo. For the Parisproject, the Imagineers developed a new, albeit slightly similarstoryline. They also removed many of the more humorous gagsand elevated the dark nature of the backstory, enveloping guestsinto a decidedly more macabre world. The “Grim GrinningGhosts” theme song is still featured (briey), but tailored withmore grisly scenes and a redone score recorded by the LondonSymphony Orchestra. The overall e " ect is a powerful and trulyengaging attraction, more focused on storylines and truesuspense without being watered down.

While a thrilling and visually stunning attraction, the o # cial backstory of the ride is one of those storylines that doesn't translatetoo well to the average guest experiencing the attraction with noknowledge of its history. According to Disney legend, the oldmining town of Thunder Mesa was founded at the base of theore-rich Big Thunder Mountain. The volume of valuable ore inside

was so much that a special mining train was set up to easily haulthe gold from deep inside the mountain. Unknown to the miners,however, Big Thunder was a sacred Native American site; thecontinual mining angered the Native American spirits to the pointthat they caused a large earthquake to strike the mining camp of

Just as one of the main boulders gives way, the traindrops through a break in the mountain and then around the nalpond and through a partially-exposed excavation site beforetraveling back into a tunnel to return to Thunder Mesa.

One of the more scenic attractions in Disneyland Paris that reallyadds to the charm and thematic integrity of Frontierland, ThunderMesa Riverboat Landing is the landing dock for two large vessels:the Mark Twain and the Molly Brown. Both of these large ships

o" er the same basic ride experience of traveling the Rivers of theFar West around Wilderness Island (the isolated home of BigThunder Mountain). Along the way, guests get unparalleled views(and photographic opportunities) of Big Thunder, as well asPhantom Manor and the adjacent geysers. Special scenes,including a smuggler’s cabin, can also be found along the Rivers,and are only otherwise viewable by taking a ride aboard the RiverRogue Keel Boats.

The two large ships are each elaborate, three-level paddle-wheelers, recalling the days when steamships roamed up anddown the Mississippi River. While the boats do ow on a guidetrack (to keep them from errantly crashing on shore and to keepthe non-track Keel Boats safe), they are otherwise real steamships. The Mark Twain is the more popular of the two, being anexact replica of the famous Mark Twain Steam Boat at the originalDisneyland; it sports a rear-mounted paddle-wheeler. The MollyBrown has a side-mounted paddle-wheeler, making her the onlyship designed as such for a Disney theme park.

When both ships are operating (usually only on the busiest ofdays), one ship departs every 7 minutes for a 15-minute round-

The backstory tellsguests that these are the vehicles of choice for smugglers up anddown the busy rivers. Ever the enterprising individuals, the rougesof the river have decided to begin o " ering tours to out-of-town

Pirates of the Caribbean is a classic Disneyland attraction, havingmade its way to all of the Disneyland-style parks worldwide withthe exception of Hong Kong Disneyland. Each version is a bit

town, lled with drunken pirates and sword-dueling lads arguingover a girl. Eventually, all of the ammunition in the town blows up,and guests wind up in Davy Jones’ locker before exiting theattraction.

Aboard the actual attraction, guests board brightly-colored boatsfor a cruise around the world just outside of an elaborate façade.This façade features various world landmarks on top, as well as amassive central clock which presents a parade of children from

rainforest and mermaid scene.

This was also the rst version of “it’s a small world” to feature aNorth American Room, celebrating The United States of Americaand Canada, and a Middle Eastern Room. The former includes ascene with cowboys and Native Americans and an exit tunnelstyled after The Hollywood Bowl in California. The North

American Room was also debuted in the Hong Kong Disneyland

version (as was

the Middle Eastern Room), while the North American Room onlywas added to the Anaheim version. The whole experience isconcluded by the Grand Finale Room where children from allaround the world are gathered and dressed in white, singing thesignature song in unison. This harmonious end to the ride wasinspired by “Once In Royal David’s City,” a Christmas hymn that

described a vision of children from all around the world dressed inwhite in Jerusalem.

I have always loved and perhaps identied (a bit too much) withthe fun-loving nature of the Pinocchio character; to that end, thisslow-moving dark ride adventure does not disappoint. After ridingthrough Gepetto's workshop, Pinocchio quickly follows Stromboliwho promises to take him and the other boys to Pleasure Island.But as you know, something goes terribly wrong and the night of

Unfortunately,Disney made the decision to hold o " and build this attraction afew years after opening, as a way to draw people to the park foran eventual second visit (a common practice). While thiselaborate version was still planned, the downside of this decisionplayed out as the then-named Euro Disneyland experiencednancial di # culty and losses unprecedented for a Disney themepark. While a thrill ride was still needed in Tomorrowland,

construction began – though on a much curtailed level.



Space Mountain, an iconic Disneyland attraction featured at allve theme parks, was completely re-imagined for its Parisinstallation, departing from the traditional white-spire dome.Whereas all versions of this attraction feature an intense, high-speed roller coaster ride through a simulated space environment,the design and complete aesthetic of Paris’ Space Mountain is anornate Victorian/steam-punk design modeled after the writings ofJules Verne.

While Space Mountain was not built until three years afterDisneyland Paris opening, it was always planned for the park. Theoriginal concept for the attraction featured a large design (nearlytwice as large as the existing), with the attraction’s dome beinghome to a multitude of attractions. Discovery Mountain, as itwould have been called, was to contain Space Mountain, a walk-through Nautilus, two dining venues, a drop thrill ride based onJules Verne’s “Journey to the Center of the Earth”, and a

The existing Disneyland Railroad stop for Discoveryland remainedin its current location while the Nautilus was built (outside thedome) as a quickly-added walk- through attraction in 1993.Space Mountain would open in the same style as previousincarnations. However, it is not to say that several innovationswere not taken with this attraction. Many “Space Mountain rsts”were innovated here, including a LIM-launch (through a cannon,no less) rather than the traditional chain-lift system. Threeinversions were introduced into the attraction, making it thesecond Disney coaster to feature them. Many rst time visitors are confused by the “Mission 2” name ofthis attraction. This is due to a recent renovation that changedsome overall show scenes, though the actual track layout and the

The memorable landmark lm, “Captain E.O.”, from Disneyland’spast originally debuted in 1986 at The Magic Eye Theatre, a newpurpose built enclosed 3 D theater at the base of Space

This fan favorite opens with a brief narration, introducing gueststo the spaceship’s “rag-tag crew led by the infamous CaptainE.O.” (Michael Jackson). While we see the small ship whizzingthrough the cosmos, we meet the crew, including Hooter,Fuzzball, Major Domo, and Minor Domo. We are then introduced

to the man himself. Problems on the mission quickly becomeevident as the ship approaches their target planet, a world oftwisted metal and rotting structures. Hooter can’t nd the landing



purpose-built enclosed 3-D theater at the base of SpaceMountain (replacing the former outdoor Space Stage). The 18-minute presentation was one of the most popular shows atDisneyland for nearly a decade, achieving worldwide recognitionunmatched by previous theme park productions. However, like alllm-based attractions, the popularity wasn’t long. With dwindlingattendance numbers, the attraction closed in April 1997 inpreparation for the land’s massive 1998 overhaul. The show wasreplaced with “Honey, I Shrunk the Audience”, another 3-D lmthat never enjoyed the popularity of “E.O.”

Upon Michael Jackson’s death on June 25, 2009, resurgence inall things Michael went through the roof – interest in the classicDisneyland lm was no exception. After months of rumors, TheWalt Disney Company conrmed that “Captain E.O.” would returnto Disneyland for a limited engagement, beginning February 2010.This was followed by the re-opening of the attraction in three

g gbeacon, and Captain E.O.’s commander (Dick Shawn) appears ona holograph screen, warning E.O. not to mess up yet anothermission.

After an intense crash landing, the crew exits the spaceship and

carefully navigates their way through the dark world, where theyare ultimately captured by the Supreme Leader’s henchmen.Brought to a large industrial court, the Supreme Leader (AnjelicaHouston) descends from a web of cords and tubes, declaring herpunishment of torture upon the intruders. E.O. informs the leaderthat he is there to bring her a gift. After resistance, he is allowedto perform for her his gift of music to help her unlock her innerbeauty.

Major Domo and Minor Domo quickly transform into instruments,and E.O. begins dancing and is about to sing when things goawry; as Hooter tries to x the instruments, the henchmen

surround the crew. Hooter comes through just in time, and E.O. isable to use the power of music to send back her guards. Dancingin Michael Jackson’s signature threatening style, E.O. launchesinto the exclusive song “We Are Here to Save the World”, usinghis music-induced powers to blast away and transform her evilhenchmen into angelic guardians as he goes. At the conclusion ofthe song (and ght), E.O. ies into the air and uses his powers totransform the Supreme Leader into a beautiful queen.

Subsequently, the entire planet is transformed from dark anddesolate to pastoral and picturesque. Captain E.O. and his crewbid farewell to the queen and her companions while performing

Disney Studios Park celebrates the glamour of show business, the creation ofmovies and the behind-the-scenes excitement of animation. The rst area

encountered when entering the park is the Front Lot , home to the park’s central

plaza, Place des Freres Lumieres .

After exiting Disney Studio 1 , guests encounter Production Courtyard on theirwest and Toon Studio on their east. The Production Courtyard is home to two of

the park’s most popular attractions, the Studio Tram Tour: Behind the Magic and

The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror. Toon Studio celebrates the behind-the-scenes magic and memorable characters of both Disney and Disney-Pixar

animated feature lms with such adventures as the Art of Disney Animation and

This is one of those attractions, like everything else in Toy StoryPlayland, that holds no secret adventures: the entire thing, in all ofits simplicity, is viewable even before you queue up. Cute and

charming enough, the thematic end of it is where the Disneyexperience ends. The idea here is that Andy has constructed aHot Wheels half-pipe to use when he plays with his toy cars.

Luckily enough, you get to ride in one of the toy cars.

The ride itself comes to just under 45 seconds; the RC Racerattraction vehicle is rather large – and while the track looks highenough and fun enough from the queue – the range of motion isreally only thrilling to the youngest in your party. This is a greatattraction to visit if you’re on your third day at the Resort andyou’ve done everything else.

Of the three Toy Story Playland o " erings, this is by far the leastinspiring, but the moderate theming provides a brief bit of visualinterest. This is your basic Himalayan-style spinner ride, sloweddown a bit for Disney tastes. For the unfamiliar, a Himalayan is thecircular, up-and-down platform-based spinning ride found atevery parking lot carnival from Los Angeles to Prague.

Therefore, sets are limitedand no real “movie making magic” is examined here like it is atthe Studio Tour in California’s Universal Studios Hollywood.Nevertheless, the Studio Tram Tour: Behind the Magic is a “mustsee” attraction here, and it does provide some interesting sightsalong the way.

The rst of these features is Catastrophe Canyon – a massivecanyon set where anything that can go wrong, in fact, does. Afteran oil tanker catches re, the ames quickly spread throughoutthe canyon. Just in time, however, a massive dam breaks,sending water pulsating through the canyon and towards yourtram. Following this, the tram travels to the opposite end of the



backlot area to take riders through a massive recreation of theburned-down London set from the lm Reign of Fire. After

passing a few props and displays, the tram ride concludes with asneak peek at another park attraction, the Moteurs ... Action!Stunt Show Spectacular.

Zone television series hosted by Rod Serling; guests familiar withthe series will have a great time in line spotting these references.

After the lobby, guests are ushered into the hotel’s library insmaller groups (much like The Haunted Mansion foyer), where alibrary window shows that a massive lightning storm has kickedup outside. The black and white television in the corner suddenlyturns on, showing a Twilight Zone episode hosted by Rod Serling;the only di " erence is that instead of introducing the scenes tocome, Rod introduces your real-life adventure that is about tobegin. Since the hotel’s main guest elevator has been out ofcommission since 1939, you are directed to the service elevator.

After walking through the eerie broiler room and strapping into

narrow metal chairs in the service elevator, your adventure intoThe Twilight Zone begins.

As the doors close, the elevators push back from the mainloading area and into a star eld accompanied by an ominouswarning from Rod Serling before being whisked up into the shaftto the rst of two scenes. The e " ects here are great and rathermystifying – to the point that you don’t want to spoil the fun byreading them here. What happens next, however, is no secret. Aterrifying 13-story, faster- than-gravity plunge into the dark,followed by a series of shorter and longer drops – some of whichinclude the walls of the elevator opening to reveal the entireDisneyland Paris Resort laid down in front of you – thirteen storiesbelow!

The attraction itself is one of the more elaborately-themed in Walt

Florida, leaving both versions of the attraction to have a uniqueo" ering of their own.

Paris’ Twilight Zone Tower of Terror is the second-generationversion of this attraction, and an identical copy of the versionfound at Disney California Adventure in Anaheim. One of the most thoroughly entertaining and informative attractions at Walt DisneyStudios, this show seats guests in a large outdoor arena in front of a small Frenchtown set. Guests soon learn that a movie is about to be lmed in the arena (a faux

movie, of course) that will feature a large amount of speciale" ects-laden car chases and stunts. Over the course of the next35 minutes, guests will see a “hero car” (red) being pursued bythe “villain car” (black) through a series of obstacles.

Along the way, guests learn how the stunts are performed and areshown a wide range of di " erent prop cars, including a car cut inhalf (for explosion scenes) and a reverse interior (for reversescenes). Motorcycles and jet skies are also small parts of theshow (there is a minor canal between the audience and the stuntshow performance area), even though they are not featured asheavily as the cars.

This sensational walk-through demonstration show is based on the 1998Touchstone Pictures lm, Armageddon. The plot of the movie, if you’re unfamiliar,is that a group of unsuspecting rag-tag oil workers get chosen by NASA for a

special mission – they must drill a hole in a meteor that is headedstraight for earth and detonate the nuclear bomb inside of it; ifthey don’t do this, of course, all of humanity is doomed. One ofthe key scenes in the lm takes place about half-way through thestory aboard the Mir International Space Station. This is also thesetting of the special e " ects demonstration at this attraction. Atthe conclusion of a brief safety video and a set-up of the speciale" ects you will be experiencing, guests are loaded onto a replicaMir Space Station platform.

After being sealed in, the fun begins. After the space station isstruck by a meteor, a re erupts, completely surrounding guests.The space station’s re safety mechanism begins but fails,followed by wall being ripped out of the space station into outerspace. As suction is pulling everything out of the space station,more explosions occur. Luckily, since you are in a movie settingand not the actual space station the danger goes away when the
