Girls Incorporated® at the YWCA West Central Michigan
Girls are empowered to be strong, smart, and bold with programs designed to build self-esteem and confidence, help set boundaries, and develop healthy relationships with adults — all key elements to building healthy young women. Using
the nationally regarded Girls Inc.® curriculum, topics include self-defense and violence prevention, dating violence and adolescent pregnancy prevention, increasing skills to resist pressure to use harmful drugs, and leadership development. Girls Inc.® at the YWCA West Central Michigan is part of the curriculum in local classrooms (including Grand Rapids, Kentwood, and Wyoming Public Schools, Ada Christian Schools and National Heritage Academy), hosts free after-school programs and summer camps, and works with the Kent County Juvenile Detention Center.
● To begin prevention early. Expanded classes to now include girls as young as 6..
● To reach many. 785 girls learned about being “strong, smart, and bold” in classrooms, after-school sessions, and summer programs.
● To keep girls safe. Leveraged the risk-reduction characteristics of Girls Inc. curricula to better serve girls with intellectual/developmental disabilities, a particularly vulnerable group.
● To teach girls they matter. 89% of girls who completed a Girls Inc.® service identified themselves as “of value”.
“Girls Inc.® has inspired me to have confidence in myself.”Mary, Girls Inc.® participant, age 17
