FROM THE HEADMASTER

www.girton.vic.edu.au

I conducted a Headmaster’s Tour today for prospective parents and their children and as always, I felt entirely confident and very proud showing our guests around the school whilst it was in full

flight. The classrooms were humming with enterprise and the grounds and buildings looked immaculate. We are fortunate indeed to work and learn at such a fine school.

We welcomed this week to the Senior School, students from Gojo Senior High School in Nara, Japan. The students will attend classes and stay with host families as well as visit a number of tourist attractions in Bendigo, the region and in Melbourne. We have had a sister school relationship with Gojo Senior High since 1992, making the exchange program one of the longest running of its kind in Regional Victoria. I wish the students and their teachers an enjoyable and rewarding visit.

The recent Junior School Swimming Carnival was a great success and you can read more about it in this eLink edition. The highlight of the day for me was when the Preparatory students, or as I call them, the graduating class of 2029, filed into the pool area to hearty applause from the rest of the Junior School, giving our youngest students a moment of special importance simply for their place in the school.

Camp season will soon be upon us and I am pleased to say that the reconnaissance trip that some of our teachers undertook on the weekend to Falls Creek was a success, paving the way for another fantastic and safe Year 9 hike.

I wrote to all parents earlier this week with regard to our new online Learning Management System, ASTRA. Substantial research shows that it is important for parents to connect with children about their school work and ASTRA makes this very easy. We are still refining the system and uploading relevant information but hope that you will take the time to explore the type of information that is now available to you in this secure intranet environment. Any feedback on your experience of ASTRA can be sent to Mrs Heather Waterston on email [email protected].

Finally, I offer the best of luck to our Girton Racing Team who next week head to Singapore to compete in the Shell Eco Marathon – an endurance competition for fuel efficient vehicles, challenged to travel as far as they can on as little fuel as possible. No matter the end results, competing at the very highest level in the sport is an incredible experience for our students.

SThis year, ten Junior School students will be participating in the World’s Greatest Shave to raise money for leukaemia.

We will shave our hair off for a great cause. The reason we shave our heads is because the medicine for cancer makes you go bald. By shaving we will have a chance to imagine how some of those patients feel.

This event will be held on the 17th of March. All students have a World’s Greatest Shave account. The students have been raising money for the past month. Hairdressers from Jools for Jim will be in attendance to shave the hair and we will have a guest speaker.

The students that are participating are Akshan Agarwal, Darcy Bourke, Patrik Byrne, Henry Jobe, Leilani Babitu, Augustine Leung, Lincon Hocking, Matthew Saxon and Charlotte Lowther. If you would like to help support any of these students please go to:

SWIMMING CARNIVAL

The annual Junior School Swimming Carnival was held on Friday 24th February, 2017.

The students once again showed their pride in not only the school but their House. We have heard the continued singing of House songs in the yard by some of the very young students.

Congratulations to Jenkin House for winning the overall cup on the day and to Frew for winning the Spirit Cup. Thank you to the Friends of Junior School for putting on the sausage sizzle again. It was great to see so many parents getting involved to lend a hand and meet new faces.

UNSEEN AND UNHEARD: TECHS DO THEIR THING

Theatre Technicians are the silent heroes of the theatre world and at Girton Grammar School, about 25 students have taken on the scaling of gantries and programing of sound and light as a co-curriculum subject.

Theatre Tech students, as they are affectionately known, are the constant presence behind the scenes and without them the show could not go on. From assemblies and school productions to major events like Foundation Day and Speech Night, the sound, light, music and special effects are carried out by these techy whizz-kids.

Working outdoors at the Senior School Swimming and Athletics Carnivals is no obstacle and working within other venues like the Bendigo Stadium on Speech Night or the House Dinners, does not dissuade them.

In the Black Box theatre at the school, students put on safety gear and scale the gantries above the performance area to adjust lights.

“The gantry is 6.5 metres off the floor, so the safety gear is not just for dress ups!” Connor Hampton (11 Riley) said.

The Theatre Tech co-curricular is run on Tuesday afternoons from 3.40pm until 5.00pm. Many Girton graduates who have taken part in this practical co-curricular have gone on to have careers in the industry and often come back to help out at Girton events.

“I only joined theatre tech this year and am loving it. It is fantastic learning new things about all of the technology that supports a range of special events.

“I am studying VET Music and Theatre Tech compliments this subject well because we learn about music technology,” he said.

RIVER MONSTERS

Our very first night of the new Kayaking Co-curriculum was a huge success with over 15 students having a go on sit on top kayaks at Lake Weeroona on Tuesday 14th February.

Since then we have seen many of our paddlers advance to a TK1 and some to the most challenging type of craft, the K1. Our newest Lake Monsters are having a great time learning how to paddle and stay upright in their boats!

Congratulations to Baelea Collins (9A) and James Humphry (10M) for being selected to be our Kayaking Co-Curriculum Leaders for 2017.

Withdrawal of Students Parents are reminded of Point 4 of the Business Regulations regarding withdrawal of students.4. WITHDRAWAL OF STUDENTS To withdraw a student from the School, at least one complete term’s notice, including the preceding vacation, must be given in writing to the Headmaster. If the required minimum notice of one complete term’s notice, including the preceding vacation period (in writing to the Headmaster), as described in the following examples, is not given for withdrawal from the School, a Tuition Withdrawal Fee equal to one tuition fee instalment will apply. There is no Prompt Payment Discount for a Tuition With-drawal Fee. For example: (a) Students leaving at the end of the school year (except Year 12 students) or during the following vacation or during First Term the following year will need to have provided notice in writing to the Headmaster no later than 5 p.m. on the last school day of Third Term (in September).(b) Students departing at the end of second Term or during Third Term will need to have provided notice in writing to the Head-master by the last school day of the First Term. Please also note that once the signed enrolment Form is received, and the first instalment of the Capital Fee is paid, the student is deemed to be enrolled in the School. Hence the notice of withdrawal period as described in Clause 4 is required to be given if a parent subsequently decides not to proceed.

If parents wish their student child’s future enrolment to be viable, the Application Fee of $110 must be paid. If an Application Form and Fee are received, parents will be contacted, in order of receipt, and invited to arrange an Enrolment Interview. This will normally start to occur approximately twelve to eighteen months prior to the year of entry. An offer for a place in the School will follow if vacancies exist.

• Prep students are immersed in the nurturing Girton culture from the beginning of their education.

• Girton’s Prep teachers are highly experienced and have undertaken specialist training and personal development programmes focused on early learning.

• Social skills and emotional intelligence are developed through programmes exclusive to Girton Grammar School, such as the RULER method.

• Prep Students enjoy classes taken by specialist teachers in Drama, PE, Art, Music, Japanese and French. Students at other institutions often don’t receive exposure to specialist learning such as this until they reach secondary school.

• Prep at Girton is a joyful, enriching experience for the children and their families alike with extensive communication between teachers and parents.

SOLD GIRTONIANS PERFORM FOR THEIR ART

www.girton.vic.edu.au

Two recent Girton graduates have moved to Melbourne to cut their teeth in the Performing Arts industry. One has joined the prestigious National Institute for Dramatic Arts (NIDA) and the other has been selected to be a part of the Victorian College of the Arts (VCA) Foundation program.

Hannah Holmes is known to many at Girton as “Belle” from last year’s Senior School production of Beauty and The Beast or as the “Killer Queen” from the Speech Night Spectacular. But few

would know that the acting ice breaker for her was in kindergarten when she sang Away in a Manger.

“By Grade 4, Drama was by far my favourite subject,” Hannah said.

“Although I am more nervous about singing than acting, any anxiety I experience has generally been overshadowed by the excitement I feel when I perform,” she said.

Hannah has performed in Girton Grammar productions ranging from

being in the chorus in Oklahoma and the Cheshire Cat in The Wizard of Oz to “Little Red” in Into the Woods and Annabella Schmidt in The 39 Steps. She has also performed with the Victorian Opera and Nexus. In Year 11, she received an A+ for her Unit 3/4 Drama subject.

Hannah said that the compulsory productions at Girton are a great avenue for creative outlet.

“Rehearsing and performing together forms tight knit communities which transfer across other areas of the school and strengthen the school community in general.

“It’s such a great way to meet friends. If you are afraid at all, take the leap – it will be one of the most fulfilling experiences you can have. Drama and singing made my whole school journey much more enjoyable,” she said.

Hannah is officially on a Gap year but was selected to participate in NIDA’s Screen Actors Studio at The Guild in Melbourne, which takes place every Saturday.

“I auditioned for the Bachelor of Acting with NIDA and although I was not admitted into the course, I have made it into their Screen Actors Studio.

“This is the first time that NIDA has run any courses in Melbourne so I’m really excited to be a part of it.

“I auditioned for both the Actors and the Screen Actors Studio courses and was offered a place in both but they run at the same time so I had to make a choice.

“I’ve not done screen acting before and was curious about it, so in the end, it was not a difficult decision,” Hannah said.

The NIDA Screen Actors Studio runs for a full year from 11.00am until 5.00pm every Saturday. There are 16 students in the class and so far students have worked on focus exercises, general acting exercises, physical and vocal warm ups. Hannah has moved to Melbourne to immerse herself in her course and in all that the city has to offer for amateur actors. She has recently moved in with her sister, who was Girton School Captain in 2013 and currently studying Biomedicine at University.

“I plan on auditioning for roles through Melbourne University and other theatre companies in Melbourne.

“I will audition again with NIDA at the end of this year for their Bachelor degree and I also have the option to audition for Federation University, Western Australia Academy of Performing Arts and VCA to do a Bachelor of Music Theatre or Acting.

“For now though, I am really keen to get everything that I can out of the NIDA Screen Actors Studio.

“My goal ultimately is to write a piece of theatre or film that is shown to a significant audience and to financially support myself in the Performing Arts industry,” Hanna said.

Grace Phillips, as well as being the 2016 School Captain, is a peer and friend

of Hannah’s and has this year been selected for the Foundation Program for Contemporary Music at the Victorian College of Arts (VCA).

“It’s a Music Theatre course,” Grace explains.

“There are only 20 people selected for the Bachelor of Music Theatre at the VCA each year. In 2016 there were around 800 national and international applicants.

“Fourteen applicants from the final call-back for the Bachelor Course are chosen to take part in the Foundation course and this year, I am so lucky to be one of those people.

“It simulates the Bachelor of Music Theatre, except less intense than the 5 day week tuition for the Bachelor Course. The Foundation course is over 3 days a week,” Grace explains.

“I’m really excited because it means I get tuition from VCA teachers who teach in the Bachelor degree and I will be working closely with the first and second year students as well as watching performance classes.

“I will have access to all of the VCA facilities and, all of this is not only fantastic in its own right, but it will hopefully put me in a really good position to make the Bachelor course next year,” she said.

Grace will commence the VCA Foundation program in March and will have 15 contact hours per week. There

are 14 students in her class and she is moving to Melbourne to live at St Mary’s College at Melbourne University. She is both excited and proud to be a student of Melbourne University.

“Melbourne is such a vibrant city, and offers a wealth of opportunities for all of the performing arts. I’m so excited to immerse myself in what Melbourne has to offer.

“I’m so looking forward to getting exposure to the industry and I’ll get involved in the Choirs and productions that St Mary’s College puts on each year,” Grace said.

Grace recently started in a Melbourne based band, “Them High Spirits” which is a Soul / Rhythm Blues band with 8 members, including her older brother, and three other Old Girtonians.

“The band is currently finalising its repertoire of original songs and we hope to gig at pubs and clubs around Melbourne.

“I will also be auditioning for as much amateur theatre as I can.

Grace’s experience on the stage is as varied as it is deep. Starting in Year 2 in the chorus of The King and I through to Cinderella in Year 10 in Into the Woods; Pamela Edwards in Year 11 in The 39 Steps; and Mrs Potts last year in Beauty and The Beast. Grace also performed in the world premiere of Ned a New Musical at the Ulumburra Theatre in Bendigo and was also

Musician of the Year in Year 11 and Year 12. She received an A Grade for her VCE Theatre Studies exam and a perfect score for her external Music Examination for Music Investigations in Year 12. Many will recall her as Scaramouche in last year’s Speech Night Spectacular.

Grace said that she used to be terrified of getting on stage.

“I’ve always loved music and singing and as soon as I did the Junior School idol and performed ‘Love Story’ by Taylor Swift I was hooked!

“At first, I was terrified but it was thrilling and I wanted that feeling again so I’ve never looked back. “

“Getting on stage is a great way to express both yourself as an artist and as the character scripted.

“I’m not overly worried about what an audience might think because I know they are there to encourage success, not to see you fail.

“I think it’s about trusting yourself to do exactly what you need to do, and what you know you can do. And of course, it’s about good preparation,” Grace said.

Both girls are looking for an agent to make sure they get maximum exposure and opportunity to audition in Melbourne and in the meantime, they are both also seeking part time jobs.

Our best wishes to these two go-getting Old Girtonians!

EDUCATIONAL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL SERVICES 2017

Our School’s Pastoral Care system includes my specialised services which include consultancy, counselling and educational assessments for students of all ages in both the Junior and Senior School.

The consultancy services involve regular meetings with the Pastoral Care team throughout the School. Staff present student issues for discussion and support plans are made collaboratively.

Counselling Services may be initiated by parents or staff. This generally involves matters which are complex, and possibly requiring Mental Health Care Plans from General Practitioners. Such issues may include stress management, separation, anxiety, depression and grief.

Educational Psychology assessment work may also be initiated by parents, but may also occur following teacher concerns being expressed to their Head of House, LRC staff or following consultation with myself. Early identification of Specific Learning Difficulties can do much to address student skill levels and to assist them achieving their potential.

Should you require further information or support for any aspect of your child’s social or emotional development, learning or behavioural difficulties, please email me directly on [email protected] or on 0419108460.

Interviews can be made by contacting Mrs. Lorraine Ellis (Monday, Thursday, Friday) on 4408 5937., Ms. Michelle Gilkes (Tuesday) on 4408 5909 or Mrs. Rebecca Doherty (Wednesday) on 4408 5951 .
