ELISE STONE Shiva – 19 December 2017 Rabbi Dr Andrew Goldstein Elise Stone (nee Harris) - Elisheva bat Beril Baruch Ha-levi What’s in a name? At the funeral I mentioned that the only thing that bugged my mother-in-law was to be called Elsie. But what prompted her parents to give her a slightly unusual name? Maybe it was popular in 1925, a film star? Maybe they liked Beethhoven’s Fur Elise… maybe sister Davene knows the reason. But it certainly was a distinctive name for a distinctive person. Elder daughter of Katie and Baron Barnet Harris, only when looking for Elise’s Hebrew name did a few things become clear. For her father’s Hebrew name was Beril Baruch… BB…and a Levi to boot. Not that I believe he was ever particularly religious, though very Jewish and, in time President of Southgate Progressive Synagogue. But Baron and Kit instilled in their three girls a deep spiritual feeling and Elise’s Hebrew name Elisheva seemed to predicate this…Elisheva, “My God is my oath”…and Elise…stayed true to that meaning all her life…in fact until her last sentient moments. As I said this afternoon…Sharon and I lighting Chanukkah candles for her and she mouthing the last words of the blessings and Maoz Tzur as we sung them to and with her. And only a really religious person would have arranged with Aaron some time ago to have sung at her funeral the 23 rd Psalm…old words and to the melody of Crimond… as well as a sonnet by Robert Nathan on winter, for she so loved poetry and literature and the sound of words and music. And how fitting she died at Chanukkah...the festival of light and rejoicing…and children…for her family gave her the greatest joy…her children and grandchildren and great-grandchildren…a whole host of them. Chanukkah basically a festival celebrated in the home, for Elise, though a regular shul- goer was happiest in her home, especially as the years went by. And as I said at the funeral, she would have been well satisfied to know that this Chanukkah there were family gatherings in Northwood and Birmingham…continuing the Kopkin/Harris/Stone tradition of close family relationships and care for one another. And well satisfied the distance covered to be at her funeral… Birmingham, Leeds and noch, Hong Kong, finding a flight at the very last moment.. And we, her family are, perhaps, fortunate that in future as we light the menorah, we can remember our sister and mother, our grandmother and yes great-grandmother with a smile on our face as we sing Maoz Tzur… Rock of Ages… God of our salvation….for she had God in her name… and in her life. Many of you here tonight, members of this congregation, only knew Elise in the last phase of her and her dear Harold’s life. In fact, two decades or more since moving down from Birmingham. I mentioned at the funeral her active life working for the community, devoted to the League of Jewish Women, and becoming Chairman of the Birmingham branch and on the national committee. Her work for Birmingham Liberal Synagogue on the Ladies Guild, as secretary to the rabbi…and in that role saw that Rabbi Rosenberg would predict at Sharon’s Bat Mitzvah that she would marry a rabbi… and Elise made sure it would come true and I am eternally grateful for this intervention in my and Sharon’s life. She and Harold so hospitable… and Rabbi Margaret Jacobi, in sending her apologies, reminded me of the welcome to their home they gave to students and refugees arriving in Birmingham.
