LITURGY CORNERMay is the time for May Crowning Celebrations, I found out some interesting information that Ithat I wanted to share with you. The coronationof religious images of Jesus, Mary and the saintshas been celebrated around the world since the17th century. In the 19th century a special rite waswritten for the crowning of Mary, with new rites
approved by Rome in 1981. In 1854, 157 yrs ago, the firstcouncil of bishops in Baltimore declared Mary as the patronsaint of the U.S. The custom of crowning Mary grew inpopularity in the U.S. and today almost every parish has somesort of May crowning. In 1913, Pope Pius X approved plansfor the building of the Basilica of the National Shrine of theImmaculate Conception in Washington D.C. He also made apersonal contribution of $400 to help fund this project. Thefirst stone was laid in 1920 and the first Mass was celebratedon Easter Sunday in 1924. The Basilica is the largest RomanCatholic Church in the U.S. and is the 10th largest church in theworld. There are over 70 chapels and oratories (places to prayother than a church) and the Basilica is open 365 days a year.(If you’ve never been there, you need to take the time to visitand bring your children. Our Diocesan Pilgrimage will beheld on 10/21. Watch the bulletin for more info aboutthis trip) There are 24 prominent/important feast days duringthe year that honor Mary, with at least 1 feast day devoted toMary in each month, and 3 are Holy Days of obligation. Have a blessed week! Lisa
FAITH AT HOMEToday’s Gospel is taken from the FarewellDiscourse of Jesus which the Fourth Gospelpresents at the conclusion of the Last Supper.Jesus’ powerful words assure us that we share
in the very life of God.. Adults: What simple steps can Itake to remind myself that God is always with me andthat I can always trust in God’s guidance and love? A Family Perspective: The mystery of the Trinity can bedifficult for us to grasp. Today's Gospel invites us toconsider how the three persons—Father, Son, and HolySpirit— work together so that God's salvation is madeknown to us. Jesus' mission is continued through theactivity of the Holy Spirit in the lives of his disciples. Wehave received this same Spirit through our Baptism. TheSpirit, living and working within us, reveals the mystery ofGod's love for us. Just as the first disciples were not leftorphaned, we are not orphaned; we remain in God'sembrace through the gift of the Holy Spirit. Gather yourfamily and invite each family member to say what he orshe knows about the Holy Spirit. Read aloud today'sGospel, John 14:15-21. What does Jesus say the Holy Spiritwill do for the disciples? Through the gift of the Holy Spirit,we come to share in the love of God made known to usin Jesus. Pray together, thanking God for this gift of theHoly Spirit. May you and your family continue to have awonderful and blessed Easter Season! Lisa
