Summertime Planning for Juniors: Summer is the time to do some serious college planning. Here is your to-do list: 1. Narrow down your college choices to 3-6. Tour a few schools this summer. Visit educationquest.org and search Navi-

ance (http://connection.naviance.com/elkhorn) for information about colleges that interest you.

2. Get involved in extracurricular activities and community service. 3. Update your Activities Resume on educationquest.org. Include extracurricular activities, honors, awards and jobs. 4. Identify teachers, coaches and counselors who will write letters of recommendation for you if needed; you may need them for admission and scholarship applications. 5. Find a summer job to help pay for college expenses. Ask employers if they offer education assistance programs. 6. Consider taking the June 9 or July 14 ACT (next chance is Sept. 8). Practice tests available in the counseling center.

Achieve Scholarship Criteria Students taking at least 4 AP classes during high school will be eligible for the Achieve Scholarship through the Foundation. Applications will be due in February of senior year. Look for updated criteria on the Foundation web-site.

Summer School: Students in need of credit recovery will be contacted re-garding summer school. A student must get approval from the counseling center before taking a class in order for the credit to be accepted.

All students (grades 9-11) interested in National Honor Society (NHS):

We often answer questions about what it takes to gain acceptance into NHS. This information is being shared to help families organize and prepare for the application components. All juniors and seniors with a 3.5 cumulative GPA are invited to apply. We will send letters to eligible applicants. Once eligible, we will hold a meeting with candidates and there is an application to complete (to see the application, visit www.elkhornweb.org-ESHS-Activites-NHS). The application includes documenting activities, awards, and service hours. Service hours must be verified with a signature of the person in charge of the event. We encourage students to collect signatures as they complete their service hours rather than trying to col-lect them later. You can either print the NHS applica-tion and collect signatures there or collect signatures on loose paper and submit these with your applica-tion. It’s also a good idea to track activities and awards as you go. Students can do this on the NHS application or can create an activities resume at www.educationquest.org.

Looking to play sports in college? Juniors interested in playing at a Division I or II college sport need to register with the NCAA Clearinghouse at www.eligibilitycenter.org. ACT scores need to be sent directly from ACT. Once registered, request a transcript from the counseling center. Many juniors request transcripts prior to leaving school for the summer. Students interested in NAIA schools must register at www.playnaia.org and request a transcript.

AP Testing: AP tests will be administered on the following dates for students who registered in March. Tests are about four hours. Students are excused from classes during the test administration but are responsible for make-up work. AP Chemistry May 7 8AM AP US Gov May 10 8AM AP Eng Lang May 16 8AM AP Psychology May 7 12 PM AP US Hist May 11 8AM AP World May 17 8 AM AP Spanish May 8 8AM AP Bio May 14 8AM AP Stats May 17 12 PM AP Lit May 9 8AM AP Calc AB/BC May 15 8AM

Senior Exit Information: Seniors completed an online questionnaire asking about future plans, final tran-script destination and scholarship information for publication in late April. Also, final transcripts must be sent to the student’s college. Email or leave a voice mail for Mrs. Krusemark ([email protected]) if you change your college over the summer.

Apps Parents Should Know—Apps that Encourage Outdoor Activity

With the end of the school year in sight, parents are beginning to think about new and exciting ways to keep students busy, without losing them to the constant temptation of mindless technology use. The following apps allow individu-als to utilize their tech instruments, while also being recommended by Common Sense Media (www.commonsensemedia.org) for encouraging outdoor activities.

Plum’s Photo Hunt: this free app, sponsored by PBS, is a great way to engage elementary-aged children and their parents in outdoor activity. Users are given a list of objects and observations that can be found in nature of which to take photos. Finding things like signs of animal life, tiny things in nature, and patterns found in na-ture gives children a sense of adventure while learning new exploratory skills and improving their observation skills.

Geocaching: Geocaching is a great family activity that inspires outdoor activity in conjunction with family time. The app gives users a list of GPS locations where others have stashed hidden treasures, and provides hints and directions on locating it. While geocaching is a great family activity, it is suggested that users always have adult supervision and is not recommended for individual use by children.

For more ideas on apps that encourage kids to get up, get out, and explore, check out https://bit.ly/1RrdBs9. Elkhorn Public Schools Policy 507.13—Internet Safety Policy was written in compliance with the Children’s Internet Protection Act. Tech Savvy Parent tips are intended to inform and educate parents of technology that may be available to their students. Tips may feature apps that are educational as well as those that may be a cause for concern to parents.

ART : Elkhorn South’s art to hang in the Governor’s Residence

Two of Elkhorn South’s art students—Cassie Moore and Creighton Scott--have been selected to exhibit their artwork at the 3rd annual “My Life in Nebraska” Exhibit at the Governor’s Residence this summer. Only eighteen pieces were selected from all of Nebraska’s art students for this exhibit. Those eighteen works were selected on originality, technical skill, and expression. To have two of those artworks coming from Elkhorn South is a quite an accomplishment for our students! Their work will proudly hang in the Governor’s Residence from June 16 to September 10, 2018.

Senior Notes As the school year winds down for the Senior Class of 2018, Sodexo would like to congratulate all of you and wish you the best. All Seniors must have their accounts cleared and signed off May 16, 2018 in order to receive their cap/gown. You can bring your sheets to a cashier in the cafeteria or the Food Service Office after your lunch. If your account is negative it must be paid off before being signed out. If you have remaining money in your account and have a sibling in the district, you may transfer the money into their account by having a parent call the Food Service Department at 402-289-0443 after May 17th. Money will not transfer automatically. If an automatic payment is set up for any graduating senior, it will need to be deleted/removed online (https://www.schoolpaymentportal.com) before transferring money or requesting a refund to prevent future deposits being made to the account. A refund can be requested by calling the Food Service Department after May 19th. Lunch accounts will not be allowed to go negative at any point during the last week of school, starting May 14th, 2018. Congratulations and Best Wishes.
