The bid comes on the heels of the program’s first-ever regular season and conference tournament titles. Elon defeated UNCW 82-48 back on March 1 at home to claim the regular season title before going on to beat James Madison, 78-60, on March 11 in the CAA Tournament Final in Harrisonburg, Va., to win the CAA’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. This is the first NCAA Tournament appearance for Elon basketball, men or women. THE SERIES: Elon and West Virginia have met four times to date with the Mountaineers winning all four matchups, all in Morgantown, W. Va., dating back to 2010. The Phoenix and Mountaineers last met a season ago on Dec. 28, 2015, with West Virginia taking a 67-57 win. The 10-point loss is the closest margin of defeat for the Phoenix against the Mountaineers, with the other three losses ranging from 33 to 48 points. ABOUT WEST VIRGINIA: The Mountaineers ran through the Big 12 Tournament as the No. 6 seed and defeated No. 19 Oklahoma, No. 12 Texas and No. 2 Baylor en route to the program’s first Big 12 championship. Standing at 23-10 on the season with a regular season conference mark of 8-10, the Mountaineers have won four in a row dating back to Feb. 27 in the regular season finale against Kansas. West Virginia is led by Tynice Martin’s 18.6 points per game and is shooting 41 percent from the floor. Lanay Montgomery is averaging 10.7 points per game on 68 percent shooting (149-for-219) from the floor. She also leads the team with 8.9 rebounds per contest. Off the court, West Virginia head coach Mike Carey’s daughter, Chelby Carey, is a second-year law student at Elon Law School. LOOKING BACK: Top-seeded Elon methodically pulled away from second- seeded James Madison last Saturday on the way to an 18-point, 78-60 victory over the Dukes in the CAA title game. JMU’s largest lead was two in the opening two minutes. After that, Elon took the lead back for good on the way to the title, leading by as many as 22 points midway through the fourth quarter. Lauren Brown led Elon with 17 points with Essence Baucom adding 16 and Shay Burnett and Malaya Johnson each chipping in 14. Burnett finished with a double-double by adding 10 rebounds to go with six assists. The win marked Elon’s first over JMU since it transitioned to the CAA. MILLENNIUM SCORERS: With three players - Lauren Brown, Shay Burnett and Jenifer Rhodes - reaching the 1,000-career point mark this season, it marks the first time in program history a trio of teammates have reached the milestone in the same season. Before this year, two players reaching 1,000 points in the same season had been done twice by Venessa Corbett and Lou Williamson in 1979-80 and Elizabeth Ward and Laura Case in 1992-93. PREVIOUS MEETINGS

SMALL WORLD: Head coach Charlotte Smith is no stranger to a member of the ESPN2 broadcast team. In 2006, Smith played for the Indiana Fever of the WNBA with Friday’s color commentator, Tamika Catchings. POLL WATCHING: Elon earned four votes in the USA TODAY Coaches poll Tuesday. It also checked in at No. 21 in the NCAA RPI entering the tournament. Elon ranked No. 2 in the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major poll last week heading into the CAA Tournament and received one first-place vote. The Phoenix was No. 5 in the final release of the espnW Mid-Major poll on March 1. 20-GAME WINNERS: With 27 victories this season, it marks just the second time Elon has reached the 20-win mark as a Division I program and is the first time Elon has earned the accomplishment in regular-season play. Last time Elon reached 20 wins in 2010-11, the Phoenix finished 20-13 and recorded its 20th win in the 32nd game of the season in the WBI against USC Upstate. THE STREAK: Elon’s nine-game winning streak from Dec. 17 against ETSU to Jan. 15 against Drexel was the most the team has won in a row as a Division I program. The last time Elon had won that many in a row came during a 12-game winning streak in 1981-82 under coach Mary Jackson. Elon’s only losses in the last 25 games have come against James Madison on Jan. 20 and Feb. 12 by six and seven points, respectively. Only UConn (25-0), Drake (24-1) and Belmont (24-1) have better records over the course of the last 25 games. Elon is tied at 23-2 with Maryland and Baylor. ON THE ROAD: Elon has been stellar away from Alumni Gym this season. Through the CAA tournament, the Phoenix is 16-4 away from home, including neutral games, with an 11-4 record in true road games. Prior to the loss at JMU on Feb. 12, Elon had won each of its previous nine road games. The nine-game road winning streak marked the longest streak for the program as a Division I team. The previous long was five games from Jan. 8 to Jan. 29 in 2010-11, the final season of the Karen Barefoot era.MAKING IT LOOK EASY: With 16 wins in conference play this season, the mark surpassed the 2012-13 season when Elon won 14 Southern Conference games. That number stood as the most wins in a conference season for the Phoenix until this year’s 16-2 championship mark. WINNING BIG: Elon’s six biggest CAA wins to date all came this season. To close the regular season on March 1, the Phoenix beat UNCW 82-48 (+34) for the largest CAA win to date. Prior to that, Elon defeated Charleston on Jan. 13 and Towson on Feb. 3 by 28 points each and beat Hofstra in the CAA quarterfinals and William & Mary in the CAA semifinals by the same margin. In those games, Elon topped Charleston 84-56, beat Towson 83-55, downed Hofstra 78-50 and topped W&M 88-60. Back on Jan. 8, Elon also beat Delaware 69-42 (+27). Before this season, Elon’s biggest CAA wins were both 22-point margins last season over Towson and UNCW.RACKING UP THE AWARDS: Elon claimed four CAA Player of the Week nods and three CAA Rookie of the Week honors throughout the season. Shay Burnett was twice named Player of the Week on Dec. 26 and Feb. 6 after scoring her 1,000th-career points. Lauren Brown took the honor Jan. 16 after scoring her

HISTORY MADE: Charlotte Smith earned her 100th career win on Jan. 15 against Drexel and now owns a record of 114-76. She has led Elon to back-to-back WNIT appearances before guiding the Phoenix to this year’s Big Dance. With the postseason appearance, it marks the fourth time in six seasons Elon has played postseason basketball. Her teams have won at least 18 games in now four of the last five seasons. MILESTONES ACHIEVED: Senior guard Lauren Brown became the 21st player in program history to surpass the 1,000-career point mark with a three-pointer at the start of the second half in the win at William & Mary on Jan. 22. In doing so, she became the first Phoenix to hit the number since Kelsey Harris did in February 2014. Shay Burnett joined Brown on Feb. 5 as the 22nd player in program history to accomplish the feat when she hit a three-pointer early in the second half at UNCW, becoming just the eighth player to reach the milestone before her senior year. Jenifer Rhodes made it a trio of players this season to join the 1,000-point club when she hit a second-quarter layup on Feb. 12 at James Madison. It’s the first time Elon has had three players reach the milestone in the same season in program history. PRESEASON PREDICTIONS: The Phoenix was selected to finish second in the 2016-17 CAA Women’s Basketball Predicted Order of Finish. It marked Elon’s highest selection in the preseason poll since joining the league. The event is scheduled to be held July 22-30, 2017. ELON IN ITALIA: In August, the Elon women’s basketball team spent 11 days in Italy for an overseas learning and playing experience. As part of the Elon Commitment to diversity and global engagement for its students, the team traveled cities in Italy like Milan, Lake Como, San Marino, Pesaro, Florence, Pisa and Rome during the trip. Aside for gaining international playing experience, the team also completed the course ‘Globalization of Contemporary Sport’ that studied the effects of globalization on sport and explored Italy’s diverse geography, history, society and culture.HOME COURT ADVANTAGE: Alumni Gym has proven to be tough place to play for opponents under head coach Charlotte Smith. The maroon and gold is 63-20 in Alumni Gym in six seasons under Coach Smith. The Phoenix went 11-3 at home during the 2015-16 season after a 10-5 record during the 2014-15 season. Elon has not lost more than five games at home in a season under Smith and has won at least 10 each of her six seasons to date.ELON IN OVERTIME: Elon is 17-11 all-time in overtime games and 1-3 when the overtime goes past one period. The Phoenix played three overtime games during the 2015-16 season, two of which went to double overtime. This season, Elon has not played more than 40 minutes a game.WHERE IS ELON?: Founded in 1889, Elon University is a 620 acre-campus located in Elon, N.C., adjacent to Burlington, a city of about 50,000. All home games will be broadcast for free through Phoenix All-Access. Radio broadcasts for the foreseeable future can also only be heard on Phoenix All-Access and will return to WSOE 89.3 FM upon completion of studio updates. PLAY4KAY, EVERYDAY: Besides its annual Play4Kay game, the Elon women’s basketball team has a special connection to the Play4Kay initiative throughout the entire year. The late Kay Yow, the hall of fame coach and catalyst for Play4Kay, was the first head coach of the women’s basketball program, as well as the Elon volleyball program, and served in that role for four years. Elon’s Play4Kay game was Feb. 16 when it defeated Hofstra 72-61 behind a career-high 27 points from Lauren Brown.STANDING IN THE HALL OF FAME: On May 15, 2015, Elon head coach and former University of North Carolina standout Charlotte Smith was inducted as one of 10 new members of the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame.DANCING QUEEN: Not only does head coach Charlotte Smith know a lot about basketball, but she also knows how to dance. 2016-17 Elon Women’s Basketball Alphabetical Roster

2016-17 Elon Women’s Basketball Numerical Roster

Former University of North Carolina women’s basketball standout Charlotte Smith was named the Phoenix head women’s basketball coach by Elon University Director of Athletics Dave Blank on Wednesday, June 22, 2011. An assistant coach at UNC from 2002-2011, Smith is the sixth head coach in Elon women’s hoops history. Over five seasons, Smith has coached the Phoenix to a 87-70 overall record. In 2015-16, Smith led the Phoenix to an 18-13 season, including an 11-7 mark in the Colonial Athletic Association, and its second straight trip to the Postseason WNIT. The postseason appearance marked the fourth in the program’s DI history and the third time in four years the Phoenix has played in a post-season tournament. The season was highlighted by the program’s first ever win over Atlantic Coast Conference opponent North Carolina State after a 69-66 final in Raleigh, N.C. Both Shay Burnett and Lauren Brown were honored as CAA Player of the Week throughout the course of the year, while Nikki McDonald earned CAA Rookie of the Week honors. Burnett became the first Phoenix player to earn a spot on the All-CAA First Team, while Brown and Autumn Carter earned CAA All-Academic Team honors. In its inaugural season in the CAA in 2014-15, Smith led the Phoenix to a 19-13 overall record and an 11-7 conference record. The team tied for third during the regular season and earned the No. 4 seed in the CAA Championship where the team fell just four points shy of advancing to the championship final. It marked the third straight trip to the conference tournament semifinals for the Phoenix. Elon’s outstanding regular season allowed the team to earn the school’s first ever bid to play in the WNIT. During the season, Elon saw the freshman tandem of Burnett and Malaya Johnson earn CAA Rookie of the Week honors four and two times, respectively. Both Burnett and Johnson were later named to the CAA All-Rookie Team. Senior Sam Coffer earned the program’s first CAA Player of the Week honor and was also named to the Academic All-District First Team for the second straight year. Off the court, Coffer, Zora Stephenson and Brown were selected to the CAA All-Academic Team. In 2013-14, Elon went 10-8 in Southern Conference play during the 2013-14 season and advanced to the tournament semifinals for the second straight year. Smith saw three players earn all-conference accolades at the end of the regular season. Jenifer Rhodes was named the Freshman of the Year and earned a spot on both the coaches and media all-freshmen teams along with Brown. Kelsey Harris was named to the coaches’ all-conference team and the media’s all-conference second team, while also earning a spot on the SoCon all-tournament team. During the year, all three freshmen – Rhodes, Brown and Lenaira Ruffin – earned rookie of the week accolades with Rhodes receiving the honor three times. In the classroom, Harris, Sam Coffer, Jessica Farmer and Zora Stephenson were all named to the SoCon winter all-academic team. In 2012-13, Elon posted a 19-14 record, including its best ever Southern Conference mark of 14-6. The maroon and gold earned a program-best three seed in the SoCon Tournament and advanced to the tournament semifinals. Smith took the Phoenix to its second postseason appearance of the Division I era in the 2013 Women’s Basketball Invitational (WBI) as the team advanced

to the tournament quarterfinals. During the season, Elon held a 13-game home winning streak, dating from Dec. 15, 2012 – March 23, 2013. The team also went on a six-game winning streak during January, finishing the month with a 6-1 record. Smith coached the Phoenix to a win over all 10-league teams, including conference champion Chattanooga, handing UTC its only conference loss of the season. Smith coached Ali Ford and Kelsey Evans to three-combined SoCon Player of the Week awards and all-conference honors, picking up first team honors from the coaches, while Ford was named to the media first team and Evans to the media second team. During the conference tournament, Evans earned second team honors. Elon also saw success off the court as all five starters (Evans, Ford, Coffer, Harris and Stephenson) were named to the 2012-13 Winter All-SoCon Academic team. The Phoenix was the only program in the conference to have all its starters earn all-academic honors. Smith led the Phoenix to a 16-14 mark in her first season (2011-12), the most victories by a first-year head coach in program history. Elon had a total of three all-conference selections in Smith’s first season, as Ford and Evans picked up first and second team honors, respectively. Coffer was also named to the league’s all-freshman team. As an assistant coach at UNC for nine seasons before arriving at Elon, Smith helped the Tar Heels to a 257-54 record, including a 100-30 mark in the Atlantic Coast Conference. UNC won four ACC titles during Smith’s tenure, making seven appearances in the top-25 national rankings. The Tar Heels made the NCAA Tournament all nine seasons during Smith’s tenure, making two trips to the Final Four as well as six Sweet 16 and four Elite Eight appearances. From 2005-2008, North Carolina earned a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament. The most decorated player in North Carolina history, Smith was a four-year letterwinner for the Tar Heels from 1992-95 and is one of only two UNC women’s basketball players to have had her jersey retired. The 6-foot forward who wore No. 23 was named National Player of the Year by ESPN in 1995 following a career in which she scored 2,094 points (fifth all-time at UNC) and grabbed 1,200 rebounds (second all-time at UNC). Smith is perhaps best known for her performance in the 1994 NCAA Championship game, when her buzzer-beating three-pointer gave UNC the national crown with a 60-59 win over Louisiana Tech. She also had a championship-record 23 rebounds in the game and was named the Final Four’s Most Outstanding Player. The ACC Rookie of the Year in 1992, Smith earned All-ACC and ACC Tournament MVP honors in her junior and senior seasons as the Tar Heels claimed back-to-back conference crowns. As a senior, she was named All-America by Kodak, the Associated Press and the U.S. Basketball Writers Association. In 2002, she was named to the ACC’s 50th Anniversary team as one of the top players in conference history. She also was honored as the 10th-best female athlete in the history of the league. Early in her senior season, she became just the second collegiate women’s player to dunk in a game when she did so against North Carolina A & T on Dec. 4, 1994. Following her collegiate career, Smith played professional basketball in Italy, where she was MVP of the Italian All-Star Game for the 1995-96 season. She also spent the 1999-2000 season there.
