Elon University Viewbook 2012
Citation preview
An Elon education will challenge the
way you see the world and help you
become an advocate for global change.
You will shape the course of your
studies and learn through immersive
experiences. That’s what we mean in
our mission statement when we say
Elon is “an academic community that
transforms mind, body and spirit.”
Elon’s curriculum is grounded in the
liberal arts and sciences, and emphasizes
experiential learning through the
university’s signature program, The Elon
Experiences. Each of the five experiences
connects your education to the real world
by putting your knowledge into practice.
Study Abroad Research Service Internships Leadership
Elon supports learning wherever it
occurs. Whether it’s by developing
challenging programs, or pledging
financial support for you to fully
engage in The Elon Experiences,
Elon provides opportunities for
you to become a lifelong learner.

ALIE GIRVIN Major: Science Education with a Biology Concentration
Meet Alie. She’s a teacher by day and a NCAA conference-
winning track and fi eld athlete by evening (and weekend). A
super hero? No, she says, her schedule is just great practice for
life as a full-time educator.
Alie was recruited to Elon for her athletic talent, but says it
was the School of Education that sealed the deal.
“Teaching is in my blood; there are so many teachers in my
family,” she says. “I knew it was what I wanted to do; but to be
honest, in the beginning, the thought of standing in front of a
class was terrifying.”
Not anymore.
As a student teacher, Alie taught biology to a wide range of
learners. She even spent a month teaching AP Environmental
Science. She credits her mentors in the School of Education
with helping her make the leap from an intimidated student to
a confi dent educator.
A course in classroom management taught Alie the importance
of fl exible planning to meet the needs of students who learn in
diff erent ways.
“The same approach doesn’t work with every student. Once I
was in the classroom, I was continually accessing my technique
and thinking of new ways to bring the content to students,” she
says. “I didn’t want to bore my faster learners or leave my
slower learners behind.”
Alie says she expected to love working with students but was
pleased to fi nd she had a built-in support network of Elon
professors and other teachers in her school.
“It wasn’t always easy. High schoolers want to talk,” she says.
“But that was another good lesson for me. There will be tough
days, and that’s just part of it.”

In 2011 Elon will break ground for a new multi-faith center. The center will be a place for prayer, meditation and refl ection in the heart of campus, respecting the diff ering customs of students' religious and spiritual traditions.
TOORIALEY FAZLY AND MASON SKLUT | Be er Together: A Multi-Faith Community
Toorialey and Mason fi nd common ground
in the details of daily life. The two men
come from faith backgrounds that can
seem diametrically opposed. And that,
they both say, is exactly the problem.
“I feel like whenever you hear about Jews
and Muslims in the media, they’re presented
as enemies, but that’s not the case,” Mason
says. “We really grew up as neighbors.”
Toorialey and Mason both have a strong
interest in religion, which led them to the
Be er Together community. They soon
found simply living together was the
perfect impetus to faith conversations.
Toorialey asked Mason about his Hebrew
class, and as Mason began to speak a few
words Toorialey realized he could understand
some of the language. So they kept going.
Linguistic similarities helped Toorialey
decipher about 50 percent of the conversation.
On another day, Toorialey was enjoying a
traditional Afghan dish and off ered to share
with Mason. As they ate, Toorialey told Mason
about the meaning of the ingredients, which
represented the story of Ishmael, a common
fi gure in the Hebrew Bible and the Quran.
Outside of their room, Mason and
Toorialey enjoy weekly gatherings with
other students. They talk about religious
stereotypes, share knowledge about faith
holidays and learn again and again
that the key to tolerance is education.
“There are thousands of similarities
among all of us. We’re be er off if we
just focus on those,” Toorialey says.

The Elon approach to aff ordabilityFor decades, our fi rst fi nancial aid policy has
been to keep the cost reasonable – o en as
much as $10,000 below other private colleges
and universities our applicants consider.
That in itself makes a big diff erence in how
much you will invest. And this cost diff erence
catches the a ention of the national
rankings. Our goal is to help you understand
all the fi nancial resources that make an Elon
education aff ordable for you.
Scholarships based on your talentsMany fi nancial aid awards are given solely
on the basis of the talents and achievements
you have demonstrated during high school.
Whether you are a top student, a talented
performer or a star athlete, there may be a
merit-based scholarship or grant for you!
Presidential Scholarships
Top student – top recognition: that’s the
philosophy of the Presidential Scholarship
award. You have made academics a
priority, and we want to recognize your
commitment and hard work by investing in
your potential to be a top student at Elon.
Presidential Scholarships are awarded to
the top 15 percent of the incoming freshman
class and are based solely on the high school
transcript and SAT/ACT scores. You don’t
even have to apply. We do the work for
you and award $4,500 per year, renewable
annually for a total of four years based on
acceptable academic performance.
Elon Engagement Scholarships
Every freshman applicant will be a
candidate for this $3,500 scholarship,
which is renewable annually. In addition,
each recipient will be awarded a one-time
$2,000 grant to be used for an approved
Elon Experience or project you design.
That’s scholarship and program support
totaling $16,000 over four years. Selection is
based on your high school academic record,
standardized test scores, and very important
— your application essay. You have a choice
of essay topics, so choose the one that
shows us why you'd be an ideal recipient.
This scholarship may not be combined with
the Presidential Scholarship. Learn full
details at www.elon.edu/engagement.
Fellows Scholarships
Distinguish yourself by becoming one of
the Elon University Fellows. These premier
academic and leadership programs are based
on your interests and talent and require an
application. Fellows Programs include Honors,
Elon College (for the arts and sciences),
Communications, Business, Teaching,
Leadership and International. Read all about
the Fellows Programs in this viewbook or
online at www.elon.edu/fellows. Fellows
scholarships range from $3,500 to $12,000 per
year in addition to a $1,000 Elon Experience
grant or special travel opportunities. Fellows
scholarships may also be combined with
Presidential or Elon Engagement scholarships
to boost your total even higher! The Fellows
application is available online and is due Jan. 10.
Engineering Scholarships
You’re set: engineering is your major and
Elon’s dual-degree program off ers you
the best of a liberal arts education and
an engineering education. Learn full
details at www.elon.edu/admissions/
engineering. Two $7,000 scholarships
are awarded annually and are renewable
for a total of three years. An online
application is required, as well as le ers
of recommendation and an interview.
The application is due Jan. 10. The
engineering scholarship may be combined
with a Presidential or Elon Engagement
scholarship.

Performing Arts
Talk about national a ention! Elon’s
programs in the performing arts bring
New York agents directly to our stage.
Scholarships are awarded by the individual
departments based on an application and
an audition. Award amounts vary. Please
note: your freshman application does not
serve as your application for a performing
arts scholarship. So, if this is your forte,
contact the Department of Performing Arts
for complete information or www.elon.edu/
auditions.
Athletics
Elon is Division I, Southern Conference and
scholarships are awarded in all sports by
the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics
in compliance with all offi cial NCAA and
university rules and regulations. Awards are
performance-based and amounts vary.
ROTC
The U.S. Army and Air Force off er three- and
four-year scholarships based on merit, not
fi nancial need. In addition, Elon provides all
ROTC scholarship recipients free room and
board during the time the ROTC scholarship
pays tuition. For more information, contact
your high school guidance counselor or local
recruiter directly.
At Elon, we help you get to the bo om lineCollege is the investment for a lifetime, and
at Elon more than 70 percent of our students
receive assistance with that investment in
the form of fi nancial aid. That’s good news
for the bo om line, which is really the only
important factor in the cost of college. So,
what’s your bo om line for the cost of an
Elon education? You must consider all the
factors. Here are some of the options:
Exceptional need-based scholarship programs
The Watson and Odyssey Programs
Students with signifi cant documented
fi nancial need are eligible for scholarships
in the Watson and Odyssey Programs, two
mentoring and support programs designed
to help students be successful at Elon. The
Watson and Odyssey Application is required
and due Feb. 10. Paper copies are available
or you may apply online at www.elon.edu/
watson_odyssey.
The Leon and Lorraine Watson Program
for North Carolina Students
Fourteen scholarships are awarded each
year in the Watson Program – eight Watson
scholarships and six Elon Commitment
scholarships. Selected students who have
academic promise and documented high
fi nancial need receive scholarships of
$21,000 annually and in combination with
other aid, should have funding to meet up to
the full cost of tuition, fees, room and board.
All students also receive a one-time $4,000
Elon Experiences grant to fund an approved
experience.
The Odyssey Program
The Odyssey Program is home to a number
of endowed scholarships for students with
high fi nancial need. Each scholarship has
unique guidelines. A complete list of these
scholarships and award amounts is available
at www.elon.edu/watson_odyssey. The
Watson and Odyssey Programs Application
is required and must be submi ed by Feb.
10. Students will be considered for all of the
Odyssey Program scholarships for which
they are eligible; however, students may
only be awarded one scholarship.
Do not wait to be admi ed before
submi ing the Watson and Odyssey
Programs Application. Complete the
required fi nancial aid forms (FAFSA, CSS
Profi le and the Elon Aid Application) as
soon a er Jan. 1 as possible, but make
sure you have submi ed the Watson and
Odyssey Programs Application by Feb. 10
even if your fi nancial aid forms have not
been submi ed. Complete information
about all required fi nancial aid forms is
listed on the next page under To apply for
fi nancial aid.
Additional need-based assistanceFor students who qualify for need-based
assistance, Elon off ers a full range of federal,
state and institutional grants, loans and
scholarships. The amount of federal aid you
are qualifi ed to receive will be determined
from the Free Application for Federal
Student Aid (FAFSA). Institutional fi nancial
aid eligibility is based upon additional
information collected on the CSS PROFILE.
We recommend starting early so that your
aid fi le is complete by mid-March. That way
you will receive notifi cation of your aid
eligibility well before May 1.
Non-need-based loansThere are fi nancial resources for students
and families who do not qualify for need-
based assistance. Elon participates in several
of these loan programs. Check with the
Offi ce of Financial Planning to get the most
up-to-date information or look online at
www.elon.edu/fi naid.
Payment PlanYou don’t have to pay for college in two
large payments – fi rst semester and second.
Elon off ers a 10-month payment plan in
cooperation with Academic Management
Services. Charges for the academic year may
be met in monthly payments beginning in
June.
