Terms and Conditions Minimum AgeThe minimum age for registration on all courses is 18. Right to make necessary alterationsWhile every effort is made to ensure that courses, accommodation, tours and activities run as advertised, the English Language Teaching Centre reserves the right to make any necessary alterations or cancellations.

The English Language Teaching Centre reserves the right to transfer to another course anyone who has registered for a course of an unsuitable level or type. CancellationYou must request cancellation of a course or accommodation booking in writing.

If you cancel more than 30 days before the course or accommodation booking begins, we will return the money you have paid, minus £100 cancellation fee per course/term.

If you cancel less than 30 days before the course or accommodation booking begins, we will not return your deposits.

If you cancel after a course or accommodation booking has started, we will not refund any payments you have made for that booking. InsurancePlease note that the University of Edinburgh cannot accept liability for loss, damage or injury during English Language Teaching Centre courses.

We strongly advise you to take out a fully comprehensive policy with a reliable insurance company. You should do this at the same time as you register. The policy should include cancellation cover for the tuition fees, travel costs and medical cover.

HolidaysFees take into account University and half-term holidays.

AccommodationThere is limited availability in private household accommodation in July and August.

We regret that the accommodation reserved for our courses is not appropriate for families with children and we are not able to make such reservations on your behalf.

Depending on availability, we may be able to provide accommodation for an accompanying spouse/partner.

The charge for the second person will be the normal rate plus 25%. A deposit of £200 is required to make a booking for the second person.

Many students travel or return home in the vacations. Therefore we do not book accommodation for these holiday periods.

Registration and Payment

How to Register Book early to ensure your place on a course.

If you require accommodation, you must book this at the same time as you register for your course.

1. Complete the registration form on our website.

2. Arrange to pay £300 course deposit and £200 accommodation deposit for each course/term. See ‘How to Pay’.

3. E-mail the registration form to [email protected]. If you prefer to pay the deposits by bank transfer, you must send the bank transfer receipt with the form.

4. When we receive your application form and deposit, we will acknowledge receipt by email.

5. We will then check your application’s suitability for your chosen course(s) and the availability of a place.

6. We will check availability of accommodation if you require this.

7. If we have a suitable place on the course and in accommodation, we will send you a confirmation by email.

8. If we do not have a suitable place, we will notify you and make arrangements to return the deposit.

9. Full fees must be received no later than four weeks before the course starts in order to complete your registration. Late registrations must be accompanied by full payment.

10. You must make any request for change of course or dates in writing.

The University of Edinburgh was founded

in 1583. Today it is one of the largest and

most cosmopolitan universities in the United

Kingdom. Twenty six thousand students

attend the University from a variety of

backgrounds and from 120 different countries.

The English Language Teaching Centre We are one of the largest university centres

for English language teaching and intensive

language teacher training courses in the

United Kingdom. We have over 30 years’

experience in teaching English as a

foreign language.

Our teaching staff are university graduates and

hold a professional teaching qualification in

English language teaching which is recognised

by the British Council. The majority of teaching

staff have postgraduate qualifications in

English language or linguistics.

Our senior teaching staff contribute to

university masters programmes, supervise

higher degree students and provide English

language support to the local business

community.

During the popular summer months, we

recruit qualified academic staff on a temporary

basis. Many of these teachers teach overseas

during the winter months and have current

and practical experience of English language

teaching.

Courses Courses are designed and developed by

academic staff who are closely involved in

course direction and classroom teaching,

ensuring a high quality learning experience.

Many of their materials have been published

in text books for students. Please visit our

We are a member of English UK and are

accredited by the British Council for the

materials, magazines and newspapers

•Three computer laboratories for English

language study with e-learning materials

and Internet access and a quiet study

area with reference materials

•Wi-Fi in our main centres

•Access to books and articles on language

teaching for use on teachers’ courses

Visiting academics also have access to all

University of Edinburgh libraries.

Class sizeMaximum class size is 15 students unless

otherwise stated.

A Typical First Day The following activities are usually timetabled

on the first day of a course:

•Introduction to the course

•Short language test **

•Tour of the city

•Welcome from a member of our senior

academic staff

•Introduction to the social and cultural

programme

** This short test will check that the student’s

language level suits the course chosen. If it

does not, we will try to find an alternative.

Social and cultural programme Studying at the English Language Teaching

Centre gives you a great opportunity to get to

know and enjoy Edinburgh and Scotland and

meet other international students. To help you

with this, we have developed a lively social and

cultural programme including:

• Half-day tours to places of interest in and

around Edinburgh

• Full-day tours to places further away

• Talks on Scottish history and culture

• Evening events, e.g. Scottish country

dancing lessons, film nights

Sport Facilities Students have access to University of Edinburgh

sport facilities including the Centre for Sport

and Exercise, which is a five-minute walk from

our main centres. Please ask for a letter of

introduction from the Registrar once you arrive.

A student entrance fee applies.

Student Welfare and Support Our fully qualified Accommodation and Student

Welfare Officer is available to help with any

welfare concerns.

If you have specific requirements to enable you

to study at the University of Edinburgh, please

University Flats - summer Standard Flats

These 4-5 person flats offer single bedroom

accommodation on a fully self-catering

basis. Students receive fresh bed linen at

the start of their stay and are responsible for

keeping the flat clean. Flats are serviced at

the end of each course.

Serviced Flats

These 4-5 person flats offer both single and

twin bedroom accommodation with shared

bathroom facilities. Bed linen is changed

regularly and the flats are cleaned weekly.

A very limited number of serviced flats have

the option of en-suite facilities.

Breakfast is included in the price and self-

catering facilities are available in each flat.

Students in the en-suite flats may be able to

obtain lunch and dinner at an additional cost.

University residences

University Flat - year-round Kincaid’s Court From September to June we can offer

single rooms in a 12-person University flat

at Kincaid’s Court, a short walk from our

main centres. Students share bathroom and

kitchen facilities. The communal areas in the

flat are cleaned weekly and students receive

fresh bed linen at the start of their stay.

This accommodation is offered on a fully

self-catering basis and is available only to

students who are studying with us for a

full term.

We require an additional key deposit of

£150 for this flat which will be returned at

the end of the stay provided that we do

not have to pay for breakages, cleaning

or repairs to fabric, fittings or equipment.

Private Households Accommodation in private households is

available all year round; however demand

is high for this type of accommodation from

July to September.

We use only hosts who enjoy sharing their

home with paying guests and who will make

our students welcome. Households are

carefully selected to suit individual needs

and are inspected regularly by our staff.

Our hosts can be families with children,

young professionals or retired people.

Accommodation is normally booked for

the period of the course registration. If

you intend to stay in Edinburgh for a

long time and want to arrange your own

accommodation, we can make an initial

three-week booking in a private household

to give you time to do this.

Points to note:

• Maximum of two students per household

•No two students of the same mother

tongue in the household (unless

otherwise requested)

General Accommodation Information In most cases, accommodation is provided

from the Sunday afternoon before the

course begins until the Saturday morning

after the course ends; it is not usually

possible to stay on in University or private

household accommodation after the last

Saturday of your course.

You should aim to arrive at your

accommodation between 14.00 and

22.00 hours.

On four week pre-sessional courses starting

in mid August, accommodation is provided

only until 09.00 hours on the Friday morning

of the fourth week.

Our Accommodation Officer is available

during your stay to assist with any problems

or queries you may have about your

accommodation.
