WELCOMEfrom Team Carnival
How time fl ies. That’s
another year gone and
it’s carnival time again.
Our big news for 2016 is that we’ve expanded.
Partly because of building work at Elthorne Park High School, the carnival will be held not just in the main park but also in the rear extension.
The main stages, beer and food will be at the back. The fairground, children’s attractions, dog show, acoustic tent and all the stalls will remain in the main section.
That means more room for even more fun, so don’t forget to check out both areas.
On the sporting front, carnival is delighted to welcome Brentford Football Club and Ealing Trailfi nders Rugby Club for their inaugural year. They will be running the sports zone where there will be football and rugby (obviously!) and also Ultimate Frisbee, basketball and Dodgeball.
We’re always trying to make carnival as inclusive as possible,
so this year ECT (everyone will have seen their green buses around Ealing) is teaming up with Ealing Centre for Independent Living (ECIL) to ensure people with mobility issues can come to carnival, secure in the knowledge they will be dropped off in a safe place and they will have a ride home (see page 23 for details).
In other news, the more eagle-eyed surfers out there will have already noticed our brand spanking new website, courtesy of Darren Moore of Now Communications in Brentford. So go have a look and hopefully it will inspire you to get involved because as ever, Hanwell Carnival would love to hear from people willing to help out, whether it is on the day or in the run-up.
Finally, keep your collective fi ngers crossed for a rain-free day on Saturday 18 June!

PARADELast year our parade was a huge success – more than 400 people took part, representing schools, charities, sports clubs and faith groups.
There were lorries, bicycles, mobility scooters and a vintage double decker bus, oh, and Ealing North MP Steve Pound dressed up as a High Court judge!
As per tradition the parade sets off from Hanwell Community Centre in Westcott Crescent and makes its way down to Elthorne Park.
Our theme this year is Fairytale of Hanwell. Under the brilliant direction of Andrea Jones, both the carnival team and other groups have been busy creating “Cinder Wella”, the Little Mermaid, the Pied Piper and “Hanwell and Gretal” ..
There is plenty of music this year Bulljam – are on a lorry, there is Soca from Wuk Up Academy – and more!

Food and drink
A day out at carnival wouldn’t be
complete without something to
eat and drink. This year the main
food stands are in the back fi eld.
Wood fi red pizza, Oriental, Spanish,
Caribbean and Mexican as well as
good old burgers and a hog roast. If
you need a drink to wash it all down,
the beer tent– with draught beer-
and our Pimms tent are nearby.
Any profi ts from these will be ploughed back into next year’s event.
In the front section of the park you’ll fi nd a smaller drinks tent
selling cans.
Three charities - League of Friends Ealing Hospital, United Anglo Caribbean Society and The Sunshine Foundation - will also be selling food in the front section.
Our thanks to The Forester Pub,
The Best and Rheian Davies at
DH Law for all their help.

Well there’s one sound engineer carnival could not do without. He sorts out the sound on the music, community and acoustic stages.
His name’s Keith Loosely and he owns Knight Sound and Light in the heart of Hanwell on the Uxbridge Road. He hires out equipment to DJs but back in the 1970s he was a DJ himself. As Keith Kristian, he built up such a reputation he worked with some of the big names of the day from Radio One.Having left school at 15 with no qualifi cations and not much idea of what he wanted to do, he got a job as a TV aerial fi tter and started “building things” such as audio and video kits in his
spare time. His opened his fi rst shop in Boston Road in 1983.Carnival would be a much more muted aff air without him. Simon Bishop, a top soundman at the BBC, mixes the sound on the music stage. He says: “Keith gets up early and makes sure that all the plans and logistics work. If Keith says it will
happen, then it will happen.”Back in his DJ days Keith Kristian got £50 per disco. Might not sound like much but back then, the average weekly wage was £32, a Big Mac cost 40p and a pint of lager 20p. Not sure how much white suits cost though….

Ace Motif is only 22 but he’s already been performing music for 11 years. Currently studying English Literature at university, he’s not only a talented singer, songwriter and rapper but also lists acting and modeling among his accomplishments. He says he wants to channel his passion for the arts and use it to challenge – even smash - the stereotypes people have about young black men. He’s also good at freestyling – making up songs off the top of his head or even using words or phrases shouted out by the audience.

16.00 ET TU BRUCE
Et Tu Brucé bring their West-Coast-meets-west-London blend of pop and rock to our music stage just in time for the release of their self-titled second album which is out in July. Vocalist Jamie White says: “We’re very pleased with it and right now, we want to get out there and play in front of as many people as possible.”
Playing live is what has won the band a formidable reputation as a uniquely compelling live act since forming in 2010. “Our approach has always been to make music we like and music we’re proud of,” says Jamie. And they love carnival, “It’s something I remember going to as a kid and always wanted to play at,” says drummer Craig Bruce. “The Carnival shows the real community spirit
of Hanwell, and makes you proud to be a Hanwellian!”

west London with, as they say, a trunk full of songs and a sound that’s all their own. ECIL & ECTEaling Centre for Independent Living
and Ealing Community TransportECT’s green buses are a familiar
sight around Ealing. The charity
does invaluable work providing
accessible transport for people
with mobility diffi culties
or with a lack of access to
transport to live independent
lives and participate in their
communities.
ECT (also known as Ealing Community Transport) is part of ECT Charity, an award-winning provider of local community
transport across the UK and the leading charity of its kind.
The organisation was founded back in ‘79 and now operates in Cheshire, Cornwall and Dorset but the headquarters remain in Greenford.
Working collaboratively with local partners, ECT provides minibuses for community and voluntary sector use, as well as door-to-door transport for individuals unable to use mainstream public transport.
ECT is also known for delivering the Accessible Shuttle service at the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games - the largest operation of its kind ever attempted. This success was repeated at the inaugural Invictus Games 2014 in London, as well as the 2015 Rugby World Cup.
Anna Whitty, ECT’s chief executive said: “I live in Hanwell and am a big fan of my local carnival. We are delighted to be supporting this great event and are grateful to our staff who have volunteered.
Hanwell Carnival @hanwellcarnival 23
“We want to provide an opportunity for those people with mobility issues who want to go to the carnival but have no access to transport. We can guarantee a safe place for people to be dropped off and they know they won’t have any worries about getting home.”
ECIL represents and supports disabled people and carers, of all types and of any age, who live and work in the borough of Ealing.
Providing advice, information and advocacy, and organising social events, courses and activities are among the charity’s activities.
It also manages the Ealing Carers’ Centre and Ealing ShopMobility.
ECIL has been participating in carnival for a number of years, taking part in the procession and running a stall. This year it is working with ECT to ensure more people can get to carnival.
ECIL chairman Wendy Starkie said: “There have been so many cuts, people are struggling to get out. They cannot aff ord taxis, so many are just getting out once a week.
“We know people who have wanted to go to carnival but have been unable to, so ECT are really helping out.
For details: email [email protected] or call 020 8840 8717.
Carnival always tries to be as accessible and inclusive as possible – there will be some disabled parking available in the car park of St Thomas the Apostle Church, next to Elthorne Park. There will also be accessible toilets on site.
On the community stage, there will be two displays from PACE - a west London charitable trust promoting the inclusion of young disabled people in sports and leisure activities. They will be demonstrating Boccia, a precision ball sport, and volleyball.

One of carnival’s most popular
attractions is back again, with
its petting zoo, pony rides and
crocodiles.
The petting farm is provided by Appreciating Animals - a mobile zoo that takes all sorts of animals to schools, residential homes and public events. You’ll have the chance to get up close and personal with loads of cute and cuddly creatures.
There’s always a queue for our pony rides where children often experience sitting in a saddle for the fi rst time. This year there will be more ponies – so hopefully you won’t have to wait as long.
The UK’s only crocodile zoo – Crocodiles of the World in Oxfordshire – is rapidly becoming a carnival tradition.
The shows will be timed and in each one you’ll fi rst see a large crocodile and learn all about them – plus ask any questions you might have – and then you’ll get to see and even hold some smaller ones. Buy your tickets at the Animal Zone, go and have a look around some of the other attractions then come back for your show.

WHAT CARNIVAL MEANSTO CHARITIES
The carnival is London’s oldest, fi rst taking place in 1898, and it was established to raise money for the Cottage Hospital, now Ealing Hospital.
Charity is still the carnival’s reason for being, and many stalls will be occupied by groups highlighting their cause and hoping to raise some money.
As charities are so important to the carnival, their stalls are subsidised which means they only pay half the cost. Charities also take part in the procession.
Abid Hussain is a carnival stalwart. He runs a sweet stand as a business but every year he donates the profi ts from a few events he attends – of which carnival is one - to the Imran Khan Cancer Appeal (IKCA).
The charity, whose founding chairman is cricket legend turned politician Imran Khan, helps run the only cancer hospital in Pakistan which provides free cancer treatment to patients who cannot aff ord it.

“Hanwell carnival is a busy event for us and I really do enjoy trading there,” said Mr Hussain.
“I bring my mum along who lives local. She walks around buying plants for her garden from other charity stalls and I raise money for my chosen charity.
“The money I take covers my costs for the stand for the day and profi ts are used for IKCA. I send IKCA a cheque at the end of every summer. It is my way of helping a good charity.”
St Mary’s Church, Hanwell’s oldest church, will be getting messy for the fourth time in a row.
Volunteers from the congregation will be returning with their Messy Church, a form of church
for children and adults which involves creativity, celebration and hospitality. It takes place once a month in the church hall on Greenford Avenue.
At carnival it will be off ering, in conjunction with other Hanwell churches, free refreshments, free children’s arts and crafts, free face painting and a free magician.
“The Messy Church ethos is all about doing church diff erently, informally and simply,” said Anna Woodhams.
“The carnival provides a fantastic day out for families in a relaxed and informal atmosphere and so we fi t in very well.

SPORTS ZONE
SPORTS ZONE Brentford FC are
making their fi rst appearance
at carnival this year and we are
delighted to have them onside.
The club’s Community Sports Trust will be taking over two courts at the back of Elthorne Park. On the astroturf pitch,
it’ll be running football-based activities throughout the day. On the second pitch, there will be a mixture of sports including Ultimate Frisbee, Basketball and Dodgeball.
Activities are suitable for children aged 5-18, and the
Hanwell Carnival @hanwellcarnival 45
coaches will organise players into their respective age groups for the games. There is no limit on numbers and there’s no cost. An application form must be completed before taking part in any of the activities, but this is done on the day itself. Greg Hardman, schools and coaches manager at the Trust, said: “We are thrilled to be part of this year’s
Hanwell Carnival. “Events that are as deep rooted as the Hanwell Carnival are so important to the local community. As a Sports Trust, we have a community responsibility to support events like this where we can actively promote sport and healthy lifestyle.
Thanks to Everyone Active for
the use of the courts.

Sports ZoneTrailfi nders
It’s a year of fi rsts in the sports
zone, with Ealing Trailfi nders
Rugby Club putting its weight
behind carnival. The club will be
tackling another of the courts
and all ages are welcome to
come and play rugby with
their experienced coaches and
professional players. There’s
no limit on numbers and again,
there’s no cost. Natalie Winton,
marketing and communications
manager at the club, said:
“Hanwell Carnival is one of
Ealing’s biggest celebrations of
what is good about our area.
“We are delighted to be a part of what appears to be quite a line-up and like us run by an army of willing volunteers. “Many Hanwellians have supported our club on our
rise through the leagues, notably when we won the 2015 National 1 to take us to our current position in the Championship, so it is a great way to come and hang out in their manor with some prizes on off er.”

Community ChampionsRoyalty 2016
Hanwell Carnival has chosen
its three VIPs to lead the
2016 procession.
The new Queen is Lovely Vaid, princess is Holly Fitzgerald-Munro and Alex Chudek was crowned the prince.
The judges – Mayor of Ealing Councillor Harbhajan Kaur Dheer and consort Councillor Ranjit Dheer, Councillor Joanna Camadoo and former carnival queen Jo Evans - had a tough job deciding between the applicants at the selection event in Hanwell Community Centre on Sunday 24 April.
The mayor said it was a very diffi cult decision and paid tribute to the organisers of Hanwell Carnival.
Ms Camadoo said: “There was a great range of candidates, all very enthusiastic.”
Prince Alex, who attends Oaklands Primary School in Hanwell, said: “I’m looking forward to the parade and people waving at you”.
The eight-year-old is a real community champion and loves Hanwell for its “nice people”.
Holly, eight, who lives in West Ealing and is a pupil at St Mark’s Primary in Hanwell, is “looking forward to seeing all the people smiling”.
She goes to carnival every year and is a big fan of the dog show.
The new queen is no stranger to Hanwell Carnival – beautician and mother-of-two Lovely Vaid has been part of our royal family before.
Mrs Vaid, 31, from Greenford, said: “I like to help the community. I really enjoyed the day and wanted to be involved in carnival again.”

BEATING THE BOUNDSThis year’s Beating the Bounds
took place on Bank Holiday
Monday (May 2nd) and it was a
rather chilly day. Nonetheless
55 people and several dogs
set off on the historic three-
hour walk around Hanwell’s
ancient boundaries – to
ensure they were all intact and
undamaged by insurgents
from neighbouring parishes.
The eight-mile/12 km walk takes in many of Hanwell’s best known features - the Grand Union Canal, Bunny Park, Wharncliff e Viaduct and some
lesser known ones including a back garden (!), all of which have boundary stones attesting to their age and historic function.
For Fiona Biggins and David Bishopp, who moved to Hanwell in 2015, it was the perfect way to spend the day and get to know the area. “We went to the Hootie this year and last, and we wanted to get a feel of another aspect to the community,” said Fiona.
Before the walk they were attentively reading the booklet all participants receive in return for a donation, which goes towards carnival (£200 was raised in total).
“We’re really hoping to get to see some of the history
of the area,” said David.

We’d like to thank - Elaine Hill for organising the walk, the Clarke family, Conor O’Sullivan and Haslemere Avenue Allotments for allowing access to four of the stones, the William Hobbayne Community Gardens for providing the willow branches that everyone used to beat the boundary stones. And thanks to carnival’s Mike Gahan for leading the walk and singing (at the same time!).
