THE HAPPY PRINCE (15)Director: Rupert Everett. Starring: Rupert Everett, Colin Firth, Emily Watson. Germany/Belgium/UK/Italy 2018. 105 mins.

Travelling back to the top hats and horse-drawn carriages of the late nineteenth century, Rupert Everett's The Happy Prince recounts the illustrious fall from grace of Oscar Wilde (played by Everett himself). A life of dizzying hedonism and (later shamed) love affairs at the height of fame hurtles towards a tragic end when Wilde is sentenced to two years’ hard labour for ‘gross indecency’ with men. Upon his release, he heads for France where, living a life of squalor, he must pit head against heart and choose between rival lovers: young Lord Alfred ‘Bosie’ Douglas (Colin Morgan) and level-headed Robbie Ross (Edwin Thomas). In a boozy blur of flashbacks and distant memories, it’s Wilde’s biting wit and humour that remain a constant right up until his last days in a dingy Parisian pit.
