Willett Travel, a Frosch Travel Company, may be the oldest business in Studio City, but with professionals like Tama Holve in action, the firm still has its finger on the pulse of the diverse travel needs

of local leisure travelers and professionals. Holve has been in action as a sales consultant since 1978, and purchased the agency with a partner in 1987.

Based on the goal of always doing what was in the best interest of their clients, Willett Travel grew from a staff of 9 to 65 since its founding in 1943, helping WWII veterans get transportation home after their service. It ultimately became the largest woman-owned company in the San Fernando Valley.

“I initially enjoyed the other jobs I held, but eventually tired of them,” recalls Holve. “However, when I entered the bustling travel industry, I found ‘boring’ and ‘travel’ were simply impossible words to meld! The world is constantly changing, and above all, my work is like solving a puzzle. It’s difficult at times, but with the client’s appreciation fueling the process…the feeling of accomplishment is incredibly rewarding.”Holve affirms that she prefers a long term relationship with a client rather than a one-off project. To accomplish this, she is honest with the client in advising him on when to spend less money, when to invest more money, and planning the best itinerary for the specific locale being visited. A trip, under her watchful eye, should be about the value received, not the money spent. Even in an era where it’s assumed that the internet is displacing travel agencies, she insists there is no substitute for a travel agent who adds personalized input to the trip planning process.“If you’re so inclined, research travel possibilities online to see what’s of interest to you, noting pricing and inclusions,” she suggests. “However, before you purchase, seek out a professional travel consultant for advice. You really have nothing to lose and a world of possible gains. The fact is that the people who travel the most are still using our services, and travel agencies still issue 70 percent of airline tickets!” “Another way of putting it is that (online businesses) will sell you anything, and whomever is on the other end won’t care if it really fits you or not, or if the fabric isn’t the quality it appears to be online. In other words, we won’t sell you just anything,” she continues. We want your trip to be the right fit, and have you as a client for life.”Holve suggests compiling your bucket list of places in the world they wish to see, and plan trips to places furthest and toughest on your body first. “One never knows how our bodies may change. Longer plane flights and rougher roads may get more difficult to endure with time. Our bodies may grow less tolerant of lumpy beds. For these reasons, you shouldn’t put off things for too long,” she says, adding, “Some of my favorite trips are backpacking in the High Sierras and sleeping on the ground, but I also treasure gorgeous hotels in great cities. There’s a time and place for everything.”Holve also argues it is never too early to get children to cultivate their own passion for travel.

“My favorite childhood memories include annual driving trips to Catlin, Illinois, summer camping and one train trip to San Francisco. We’ve travelled with our children, and continue the family tradition with our grandchildren. This helps them became more understanding of others, and more resilient in challenging situations because they had these experiences out of their comfort zone. I’ve often said that they’ll remember those trips more than they would a new chair in the living room.”Holve, who has been married to husband and fellow Valley native Greg (who practices dentistry in Valley Village) for 46 years, definitely passed their love of travel to their adult children Taylor, in Santa Barbara, and Vanessa, who lives in San Diego.

Holve encourages families to disconnect from the norm and explore life outside of their usual surroundings. “Unplug from the world online and introduce your children to experiences that challenge them physically, intellectually and socially,” she advises. “Think about what you did with your parents when you traveled with them as a child.” Here are tips to ensure the road ahead is a smooth one:• The little ones might need “time outs,” or a blanket on the floor of a

restaurant to fall asleep early.• If older children whine, remind them they are making memories, and tell

them about your own experiences traveling with your parents.• Don’t plan sightseeing family vacations with younger children at the same

pace you’d go without them. • Go for a comfortable combination of what’s familiar and what’s new when

traveling with children. Look into renting beautiful condo on the beach, having familiar breakfast food in the fridge, and an easy convenient place for them to nap while you read overlooking the ocean.

• To keep your finances in check, consider all-inclusive resorts, cruises, trains, or tours to avoid unexpected expenses. A week-long vacation to an exotic tropical island can cost less than Disneyland!

• Pack little surprises (such as games, puzzles, treats and toys) as rewards on a plane flight…one per hour for behaving well! For more information on how to plan the perfect summertime family or couples’ getaway, contact Tama Holve or her team at [email protected] or 800-994-5538.

While many families see their home as their castle, 30-year residents Janet and Jeff Loeb see the bigger picture: Studio City, as a greater community, is their home. It’s a

home that, among other things, nurtures its residents with excellent schools, green space, and urban amenities. It’s a mix of different elements that don’t exist in that combination in many other places. They also believe that for the foundation of that home to remain strong, responsible stewards are needed to safeguard what makes the community special.

“When we were thinking about our lives here, and the word ‘diversity’ came up, Jeff initially thought about the people who make up Studio City,” says Janet. “I saw diversity relating to the many environments, from its great restaurants and mix of city amenities, its proximity to downtown, West Hollywood, and Beverly Hills, its hiking trails and parks and recreation areas, and its neighborhoods ranging from urban to rural. And let’s not forget our gateway to the L.A. River with its huge potential. It’s a place where you can find anything you want or need.”

Janet says one of the biggest luxuries afforded to the family was the variety of schools available in the area that suited each of their kids’ individual academic needs and interests. Their four children (Josh, 27; Charlie, 25; Robbie, 21; and Joanna, or Joey,14) all attended Carpenter School which became an anchor for them in the community.

“I served on the Governing Board and as president of Parents For Carpenter. I felt like I was a partner in their education. After Carpenter, the kids went to different schools: Oakwood, Walter Reed, Harvard Westlake, and Buckley. Each school offered an exceptional experience and we are thrilled with how our kids have turned out -- so far at least!”

The couple has been involved with the neighborhood association in Fryman Canyon since they moved to the area. Janet now serves as Co-President and has used the position to encourage her neighbors and the community at large to remember what drew them to Studio City in the first place…and prevent it from getting lost in the name of progress.

“Studio City was a hidden gem when we first moved here,” she continues. “Many people didn’t really know what it was all about. Over the years, hidden gems cease to be hidden. As more people move here, we worry about maintaining the character of the area

and particularly the open space that is precious to so many in a city like Los Angeles. Living adjacent to the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy, we are concerned about threats to wildlife and environmental degradation, fire, and vandalism. Hiking trails are overused and under-patrolled. If there were a fire, the area could go up in flames rapidly, and the only way out of this canyon is often flooded with hikers and their cars.”

Janet details that worsening traffic conditions are also caused by parking restrictions, and apps like Waze, which bring unwanted traffic to quiet neighborhoods, threaten pedestrian safety, and exacerbate environmental damage. While she and other members of the community work with the Councilman’s office, she notes that change often doesn’t keep up with the worsening conditions.

“There’s a lot we can do to protect our community,” Jeff advises. “Get to know your neighbors. Get involved in your local homeowners’ association and participate in community activities. Be aware, and be respectful.” Janet adds, “It is important to work locally, but equally important to see the big picture and stay on top of our city officials to make sure they also see the big picture. We can’t forget that what happens in one place impacts another. It can seem overwhelming, but if we don’t preserve what we have, we won’t get another chance.”

Jeff, a native Angeleno, and Janet met in the mid-80’s. They married in her hometown of Franklin, Michigan, and when they discovered Studio City, she fell in love with the open spaces and deciduous trees which reminded her Franklin. While the University of Michigan and Wharton Graduate School launched her career as an investment banker, Janet spent her time consulting and volunteering during her children’s school years. She is currently involved in a project that explores the intersection of Medicine and Arts, creating exhibitions

that share stories of artists with life-altering conditions, and how the Arts have impacted their experiences.

After his years as a civil litigator and an L.A. County Deputy District Attorney, Jeff joined the venerable law firm of Loeb & Loeb LLP in 1985, where he is a partner in its nationally renowned Trusts & Estates department. He serves on the Professional Advisory Council of the Motion Picture & Television Fund and is active in the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America. While Jeff is an avid golfer and Janet is a devoted patron of the arts, they are equally passionate about travel -- especially when the experience adds meaning to their pursuits back home.

“We recently visited the Great Barrier Reef, where we saw first hand the degradation of that amazing ‘Wonder of the World,’ as the coral reef is slowly dying,” Janet says. “We asked why, and were told it was because the water is warming and too many people visit it daily. Why don’t they better control this? Corporate interests and money. We were impressed with eco-tourism in the

visitors is strictly limited. You have to be completely washed off when traveling between islands so as not

The contrasts between these two destinations bring Janet back to the importance of protecting her home. “I think we need to be somewhere in the middle with Fryman Canyon. There are very few cities in the world that can claim acres of mountains and wildlife in the midst of an urban environment. We are lucky to have all this natural beauty at our doorsteps, and we may need to sacrifice a bit to preserve it.”

This simple science experiment is a fun way to get your children learning about how things work.

HOW DOES IT WORK?Energy is created by the balloon forcing the air out. This then creates a motion called thrust that pushes the balloon forward. In a real rocket, thrust is created by the force of burning rocket fuel as it blasts from the rocket’s engine – as the engines blast down, the rocket goes up.

WHAT YOU NEED• Balloon• Long piece of string (about

three yards)• Drinking straw• Masking tape• Clothes pin (optional)

HOW TO MAKE YOUR ROCKET • First, thread the string through the straw.

• Next, either hook your piece of string across a large archway using the two hooks, or rig it up between two chairs. It works best if one end of the string is higher than the other.

• Blow up the balloon but don’t tie it off, just hold it pinched shut. Even better use a clothespin

• Without letting the balloon deflate, tape it to the straw on the string.

• Slide the straw and balloon up to the high end of the string.

• Let go and watch your balloon rocket shoot to the end of the string.
