Garret Quist is consistently demonstrating the division’s core values of Truth, Excellence and Teamwork. He always comes to work with a positive attitude and a willingness to help others solve problems. He is self-motivated and actively seeks out ways to improve both the material condition and efficiency of the plant. Here are a few examples that “scratch the surface” of his character, and represent the level of effort and stewardship that he takes with every task that is assigned to him. Truth – Garret is determined to uncover and understand the cause-and-effect of all plant performance. When asked to calculate the efficiency of the Steam Turbine Generators, he filtered thousands of data points from the CEP iHistorian, replicated large portions of thermodynamic steam tables in an excel spreadsheet, and wrote a program that would calculate and graph the most accurate efficiency curve possible from the collected meter data. Although Garret would consider this a very small accomplishment, it demonstrates the level of effort he puts into producing the best results that he can, day after day. Excellence – Garret is always thinking of ways to save the University money. This quarter he designed and acted as the program manager for the installation of a renewal project that would both reduce the amount of water used by the Central Energy Plant and improve plant reliability. This system (STG2 Closed Cooling Loop) is now in place and is expected to save the university over $20,000 per year. He is currently designing a similar system for the Heat Recovery Steam Generators (HRSG) that will result in a savings of over $60,000 per year in water and sewer usage! Teamwork – Over the years Garret has developed a strong relationship with many of our stakeholders, shops and numerous contractors. With each of these interactions he carries himself like a true professional and a model representative of Cornell University. These personal relationships have directly supported the IPP’s mission and have contributed to the department’s success. Garrett was nominated by Josh LaPenna Congratulations Garret!
