Winter Week

By

Noah Plumley and Adam Chilson

Have you ever participated in the most excit-

ing thing in the month of February? Winter Week

is where all of the various grade levels unite in

healthy competition and compete for bragging

rights. The classes of Addison High and Middle

School have contests,

challenges, and competi-

tions between each other

for prizes and to see who

will be on top. This year,

Winter Week, will be Feb-

ruary 25th through March

1st and it will take on a

new look and feel based on the planned events.

Winter Week traditionally ends with a dance.

Who will win bragging rights this year?

Super Bowl Kick Off at

Valley Elementary School

Valley students and staff celebrated Super

Bowl Sunday by wearing their favorite team jer-

sey and eating “yummy” cupcakes provided by

the Addison Youth Center. Cupcakes were

baked, decorated, and brought to the Valley El-

Addison Youth Center provided a football field

for the cupcakes to be arranged on and some

cupcakes were shaped into a football stadium.

“Thank you” to our Addison Youth Center for

providing us with awesome cupcakes and to the

Valley PTA for organizing our fun day!

Community Church of WoodhullSubmitted by Sharon Calkins

(2/17/13) Mark 1:9-13: How many of you have highs and lows in the same day or even very close together? Jesus’ high: When He was baptized by John in the Jordan River. As He came up out of the water He saw heaven being torn open, the Spirit descended on Him and He heard His Father say “You are my Son, whom I love, with you I am well pleased.” His low: immediately He was sent out into the wilderness for 40 days with wild animals and tempted by Satan, and angels attended Him. Jesus un-derstands us intimately. We all have wilderness times. We couldn’t handle 40 days in the wilderness, we’d be tempted to give up. Some things we need to survive the wilderness are (1) Compass for direction. We need to trust in the Lord with all of our heart and understand-ing. How much time do you spend in the Word of God? A compass does no good if we don’t know how to use it. We need the spiritual compass of God’s Word. (2) A book of matches for light, heat, and to prepare food. The Holy Spirit is a fl ame when we get cold spiritually. God is our Light, heat and warmth. (3) Shelter, tents on our backs. Jesus is a Rock in a weary land and shelter from in the time of storm. If in the wilderness of illnesses, relationships, and/fi nances, a compass, the Light of the world and God’s shelter is there. All you need to do is ask. Say to Him, “Lord I’ve lost my way and I am cold, please give me what I need to see me through.” He will hear your prayer and will answer. Our services are at 9:30 and we welcome you to worship with us Sunday.

How to Build a Better Dairy Cow Do you ever feel you need an English to genetics diction-ary when trying to read the latest sire directory? Cornell Cooperative Extension invites you to join us March 7, 2013 from 10:30am – 2:30pm at Club 57 in Hornell to demystify dairy genetics. Calvin Crosby, ABS Area Sales Manager will help you better understand dairy cow genetics. Calvin will share tips on how to get the most out of a sire proof because your herd’s genetic value is based on improving your cow’s profi tability each generation. There has been renewed interest in dairy crossbreeding as new advantages come to light; increased production (protein, fat and overall pounds) and improved fertility are potential advantages of implementing a crossbreeding program. Calvin Crosby will discuss the potential impact a crossbreeding program can have on your herd. Stacia True, Technician Supervisor, Select Sires will highlight recent advancements in reproduction manage-ment, including, sync protocols, electronic heat detection systems, and walk and chalk program. Genetic performance is important to the overall profi t-ability of a dairy regardless of size, management or en-vironment. Pre-registration is requested by Friday March 1st, contact CCE at 607-664-2300. Cost to attend is $15 per person. Lunch will be provided.

Addison’s Businesses, Institutions, and BuildingsAuto, Gas Stations, and Garage Industry in Addison 84 Front Street

Part III: 1934-presentSubmitted by: Larry Mundy

The G. L. F., in 1934, leased the Sprague Mill building behind the Short’s gas station from B. F. Short. Kenneth Armstrong was appointed as manager. That year G. L. F. sold 2,413 tons of feed, fertilizer, seed, and other farmer needed supplies. In 1937, the business sold 4,338 tons, had a profit of $3,015.01, and served 285 patrons. The limited space of Sprague’s Mill, its inconvenience of being behind a gas station, and the long distance from Front Street started a search for a different location. This time the location with more space and a new modern building was planned. That location was not far away. In 1939, ground was broken at 94 Front Street, next door, for that facility. In January of 1942, the Grange League Federation (G. L. F.) had a new home. B. F. Short remained in business during this time period (1930-1942) selling coal, gas, oil, motor oil, and doing car lubrication.. In 1938, he sold Amoco gas in three pumps. The two outside pumps had Amoco regular; and the center pump had high-test. The Short’s, in the early 1940’s, leased 84 Front Street, through, at least 1966. From possibly 1942 to 1945, Cunningham and Herrington leased the station. In 1946 until 1958, Rulef and Richard Hovey leased the facility, selling Esso gasoline. In 1958, a Mr. Card and his wife took over the business until 1966 selling Citgo Gasoline. Some time in the early. 1970’s (1971-74), the property was sold to Harold DeRue. Its last use was a fruit and produce stand. The Gas station/fruit stand was razed sometime in the late 1970’s. Harold DeRue, in 1983, sold the property to Lyman and Mary Crane for their Car-Quest auto parts business. Combining the old and adding new, the Crane’s did extensive remodeling and renovation, saving the two story Sprague’s Mill structure, while giving the business a modern look. Daughter Teresa Crane Moore and husband Raymond worked in the Addison store until 1997 when the business expanded to a second store in the Ames Plaza in Painted Post, New York. Teresa managed the Addison store and Raymond managed the Painted Post store. The Addison Car-Quest Store close in 2009 to concentrate more on the Painted Post store. By 2010, Thompson Memorials, cemetery stone dealers, rented the store from the Crane’s, and still do as of 2013. Also, in 2012, Carey Crooker opened her photography business in part of the building.

Faces of the Civil War The Civil War killed perhaps five per cent of the male population of the United States. It marked the nation, and scarred the men who bore the battle. Five Steuben County veterans described their experiences as published books… either memoirs, or collections of letters. On March 1, Steuben County Historical Society will introduce these five soldiers, briefly tell their stories, and offer a look at the human face of the Civil War. The soldiers’ experience was deep. Henry Lyon of Pulteney was killed at Antietam, one of 23,000 casualties on what is still the American military’s bloodiest day. Richard Phillips of Prattsburgh lost the use of his right arm at Gettysburg. In the years following Chancellorsville, Russell Tuttle of Almond described what we now recognize as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Also included are John Macintosh Kelly, who got the crops in before leaving his wife in Fremont to join up, and Robert Beck of Hammondsport, who had already traveled as far as Germany and Australia when he enlisted for 90 days and helped save Missouri for the Union. The March 1 Steuben County Historical Society Winter Lecture, 4 PM at Bath Fire Hall, is free and open to the public. The soldiers’ stories will be presented by Jim Corbett and Bob Yott, both Civil War re-enactors; historian Kirk House; and Society members Helen Brink and Martha Treichler, who respectively edited the books of Kelly and Beck for publication.

Dear Editor The last three weeks I have written letters about dangerous myths people believe are true. Those myths cover sin’s reality by pretending that sin is okay. The problem is that covering up sin does not take care of it. After all, we are all sinners (Romans 3:10-13, 23) and we all deserve to be punished by a holy God. God loves us and has no interest in punishing us, so he made a way for us to escape punishment. He sent his son Jesus (John 3:16) to die for our sins (I Peter 2:24) that by his blood our sins would be washed away (Ephesians 1:7; I John 1:7; Revelation 1:5). The Bible is very clear about this topic. Read these verses and watch for the word saved (I used the King James, but other reliable translations may choose to use a different word to express the same thought.) John 3:17, 5:34, 10:9; Acts 2:47, 4:12, 11:14, 16:30-31; Romans 5:8- 9, 10:9, 13; I Corinthians 1:18, I Corinthians 15:1-4; Ephesians 2:8-9; I Thessalonians 2:16; Thessalonians 2:10; I Timothy 2:4; 2 Timothy 1:9; Titus 3:5; Revelation 21:24. Our society is trying to teach us that sin isn’t wrong and false religion tries to teach us hell is a myth, but the Bible clearly states we need to be saved! All you need to do is repent of sin, believe Jesus died as your only remedy for sin, and ask him to save you and he will!

In Jesus,Reverend Adrian Essigmann

“Rock Group” Thomas Grell, son of D’Ann and Kevin Grell, formerly of Ad-dison and grandson of Suzanne Slocum of Addison has formed a band out in Hickory, N.C. The three piece band is called “Leaving Venus” simply because they are “out of this world” when it comes to their music. They are a very tight, power rock trio push-ing the limits of their music to a higher level. Michael Miller, lead guitarist says of the bands music “we want to do our songs we have written, not just cover tunes that were once popular. “Leaving Venus” has musical influences from Clapton, the Beatles, Cream, and the Black Keys. Grell, bass guitarist for the group says “you can’t really hide anything when you are a three-piece group.” “Even though we like to improvise our music has to be tight or every-one will notice any mistakes we might make.” The group has released two EPs up to this point in their musical career: “30 k ft” in Oc-tober of 2011 and “Sick of It All” in February 2012. Their long awaited self-titled album, “Leaving Venus” debuts February 23. Fea-turing original material, Leaving Venus fans have thrown their support behind the band by helping raise money for the project. For more information, go to www.leav-ingvenus.com. Palmesano Announces Launch Of New Facebook Page & Website LinksAssemblyman Phil Palmesano (R,C,I-Corning) today announced the launch of his new Facebook page, “Assemblyman Phil Palmesano,” and the addi-

tion of two new helpful links to his Assembly website, “Kids’ Page” and “About the Assembly and Capitol.” “One of my top priorities as an assemblyman is to make sure I’m doing everything I can to represent the needs of my constituents and provide benefi-cial resources to them,” said Palmesano. “I hope this new Facebook page will be an effective way to keep constituents up-to-date on what’s happening in state government and the 132nd Assembly District, and also be a forum for people to discuss what is important to them in state government.” Of the new links, the “Kids’ Page” offers a variety of useful tools to learn about state government, specifically tailored for kids from kindergarten to sixth grade, and for teenagers in seventh to twelfth grades. The page offers word searches and coloring books for younger kids, but also has an array of op-tions for older kids and teenagers that offer great history lessons about the Assembly and some of its most prominent members. The “About the Assembly and Capitol” page offers virtual tours of the Capitol for those who haven’t visited Albany and resources on the ongoing Capitol renovations. The page also offers information on how to visit the Capitol and get around the capital district. “I hope the new website links will be useful for those interested in learning about the Assembly and Capitol and that kids can take advantage of the new ‘Kids’ Page’ to learn about state government and how it works,” said Palmesano. 7. HOW TO CHOOSE A CHIRPRACTORBY: DR. MEINSENCHIROPRACTOR

APPLIED PHYSIOLOGIST When your low back hurts, ask the chiropractor if he/she can determine if you need lumbar flexion motion or lumbar extension motion to correct your problem! If your chiropractor is able to do this then ask which motion you are deficient in? The deficient and weaker motion is the one that you should be taught and the one practiced at home. Even so, I strongly recommend to generally avoid the chiropractor that thrusts down into your low back while you are lying face down on the adjusting table. Chiropractic isn’t rocket science and I’ve determined this method of treatment to be harmful. In most cases, performing lumbar flexion is the key to having a stronger, healthy low back; and in-variably, it is lumbar flexion activities that should be the principle rehab activity to cause improvement. Let’s begin with last week’s example of the dog that arches his low back excessively, in a sunken manner, upon rising from a nap. The opposite mo-tion from this, which is most often seen depicted by a “Holloween” cat, is when the cat arches its back up in the manner of a doorway arch. This is lumbar flexion. It is when the low back is made to flatten and slightly arch like that of the cat. This activity can be accomplished by lying on your back and then focus on flattening the low back by contracting your stomach muscles to push the lumbar spine into the floor. Another person can assists you by placing their hand in the “small” or most arched site of your low back so then they can detect if you are indeed flattening your lumbars. It takes practice. For some it is very difficult, but it is an activity all should learn. Continued.

Jasper-Troupsburg High School Welcomes Exchange Students

For the past two years, Jasper-Troupsburg High School has participated in two very prestigious for-eign exchange p r o g r a m s , the Youth Ex-change and Study (YES) a n d F u t u r e Leaders EX-change (FLEX) through Aca-demic Year in America. To date, 13 stu-d e n t s f r o m the countries: Russia, Oman, Israel, Indone-sia, Pakistan, Egyp t , Ky r -gyzstan, Bah-rain, Lebanon, Turkey, and Ukraine, have experienced the culture of an American High School in rural United States. One current student is Seema (Pakistan). Seen here, she is visiting the Steuben ARC, to learn about programs for the disabled in the USA. Seema, and other foreign exchange students, learned fi rsthand about silk screening, embroidery, and packaging programs that employ many adults at the ARC. Seema hopes to bring home the lessons she has learned while in the USA to reach out to persons with disabilities in Pakistan. While attending Jasper-Troupsburg High School, Seema has participated in Varsity Cross Country, Chorus, Band, and FFA. She has also won a place at the “Better Understanding for a Better World” confer-ence in Baltimore, MD in April. Seema has a special place in her heart for persons with disabilities. If you have a community service opportunity that involves these special individuals, please contact Terri Rogers at (607) 525-6125.

Woodhull Free Movie Night On Saturday, February 23rd at 6:30 p.m. we will be showing “Facing the Giants” at the Community Church of Woodhull (next to the fire department). Never give up, never backdown and never lose faith is the message of this great family movie. After six consecutive losing seasons, high school coach Grant Taylor believes things can’t get worse. He’s wrong. With fear and failure defeating him in football and in life, the downtrodden coach and husband turns to God in desperation. Trusting that God can some how do the impossible, Coach Taylor and his Christian Eagles soon discover how faith plays out on the field... and off.Come and join us for a family movie night, free snacks and prizes. Sponsored by the Community Church of Woodhull.

Four Factors To Consider When Contemplating An Online DegreeAs a new year begins, we often evaluate our lives- where we are and where we’d like to be. It’s no surprise that many Americans are making education a priority as they set their personal goals for 2012. “The unemployment rate for people who have never gone to college is more than double what it is for those who have gone to college,” says Dr. Mary Hawkins, president of Bellevue University. “And

Defensive Driving Course The six-hour National Safety Council “Defensive Driving Course” will be given on Monday, February 25th and Tuesday, February 26th, 2013 from 6:15 p.m. - 9:30 p.m. at the Jasper-Troupsburg High School, Main Street, Jasper. A fee is charged and payable at the course. The instructor for the course is Richard E. Swan. The defensive drivning course offers all drivers, and those not yet driving a new approach to learning accident prevention skills and safe driver tips. The course also automatically deducts 4 points from your driving record, and allows all principal operators of vehicles to save 10% on their liability, and collision auto insurance premiums for 3 years. Pre-registration is required and space is limited, so sign-up today. For additional course information and to pre-register, please call The Manley Agency in Jasper at (607)792-3800.

during the next 10 years, nearly eight in 10 new jobs will require workforce training or a higher education. These statistics make it clear that completing some form of higher education is the best tool to meet the challenges of a 21st century economy.”If you’re considering going back to school, chances are you’ve wondered about online learning. Is it legit? Will I get the same quality education I would in a classroom? Will my degree be as respected as much as it would if I attended in person? The answer is, surprisingly, the same as with a traditional, in-class situation-there are varying levels of online de_grees and you must do your research to fi nd the best one for you. Here are four factors you should consider if you’re contemplating getting your degree online: 1. Just as with an in-class program, you want to make sure the institution you attend is regionally accredited. This designation is an indicator that the institution voluntarily reports on the quality of its programs and submits to assessment to ensure quality offerings.2. Determine whether or not you must be online at a particular time each week; if you can enter the virtual classroom when it is most convenient for you. Based on your lifestyle, decide which of these formats will best set you up for success. Maybe you have a hectic, unpredictable schedule and you need to do the work when you can fi t it in. Or perhaps you are the kind of person who benefi ts most from a set time each week to attend class.3. Online learning is still relatively young in higher education. Some institutions, like Bellevue University, have been offering online degree programs since the mid-’90s. It is important to make sure the school you choose has had time to optimize its online offerings. 4. Ask if the entire degree program is offered online or if it is just one component of the larger program. Some universities re_quire both online and in-class participation within the same program. If you are interested in this type of blended program, make sure you ask how much content is delivered online and how much is delivered in class so that you can plan how you are going to fi t the components into your life.Lastly, please know that when you reach your goal, your degree will not indicate whether you studied online or in class. You don’t need to worry about perceptions from those who still doubt online learning. What’s most important is determining if earning your degree can get you to where you want to go and if online learning is the best way to fi t getting a degree into your already busy life.

Recently, a friend of mine told me about his meeting with a financial adviser, and how for the first time he truly understood what he was being told. He felt he could trust and accept the advice because the financial adviser explained simply and at his level of understanding. Our relationship with God should also be simple and easy to understand. We may not fully understand everything about our faith or why certain things happen to us in this world, but that’s okay. We simply have to realize that God cares about us and that His ways are not always our ways. God’s unending love and support for us is always there. In return, He asks us to love, trust, and accept him as our Lord and Savior.
