Creating Bright Futures eNews 12 October 2018 NAPLAN 2018 - Celebrate our School Success!! Time was taken during the School Development Day Monday 8 October 2018 to delve deeply into our 2018 NAPLAN results. As outlined in a previous Newsletter, our staff use NAPLAN to identify positive trends that are indicated by results of Year Three and Five NAPLAN tests over time. We also match areas of strength and potential challenges with those indicated in Progressive Achievement Tests (administered across Literacy and Numeracy in years 1–6), On-Entry Assessments (administered at Pre-primary level) and valid teacher assessments (administered following a learning sequence to identify student achievement and progress). We are very proud to share the following graphs with you. These results are the result of the cumulative, ongoing, dedicated, committed efforts of all staff in our school – and the focus, concentration and targeted practise of all our students. Our school has demonstrated incredible progress and achievement gains – thank you for supporting our school in the many ways that you have, as it is clear the Tuart Hill school community works well together to achieve the best for our students. The quadrant graphs indicate the students’ progress and achievement compared to like schools. Achievement is the average NAPLAN result for a cohort of students. Progress is the difference between the average NAPLAN score for students tested at the school is in two test cycles (stable cohort). Because there is no progress result for Year 3 students, the graphs can only represent the achievement and progress from Year 3 to 5. This fantastic result is evidence that whole school approaches are being implemented and are effective. The School Board will be looking very closely at our data sets at their next meeting Wednesday 24 October 2018, 5.30 pm in the Staff Room, to ensure that current and planned strategic directions are resulting in appropriate student progress and achievement for every student at Tuart Hill Primary School. NAPLAN 2018 - Celebrate our School Success!!

Year 3 data indicates a significant increase in student performance compared to 2017 results. Year 5 data also shows an increase in results compared to last year. A downward trend line has been evident over the last few years, however this year, the trend line in Year 3 results has moved to an upward direction and the Year 5 trend line is levelling off. Hooray!

2018 Year 3 & Year 5 data indicates a significant increase in student performance compared to 2017 results. Year 3 student performance should be highlighted as exceptional, moving from -0.4 in 2017 to 1.2 in 2018. Yippee!

Year 3 data indicates students are performing at the same level compared to 2017 results. The Year 5 data shows a significant increase in student performance compared to 2017 moving from -1.3 (Red) to 0.3 (Yellow). Year 3 & Year 5 student performance is within the expected range.

While we are comparable to other schools, this continues to be not good enough for us as our aim is that our results demonstrate an upward trend. We have implemented Talk for Writing across the whole school – I wrote about this evidence-based improvement approach in a previous eNews.

2018 was our first year of Talk for Writing, and we see that our mean results improved – we look forward to even greater successes next year and the year after. Thank you, staff and students, for your active engagement with and obvious enjoyment of Talk for Writing and your efforts that we know are resulting in more imaginative, descriptive and well-structured writing pieces.

Our school achieved our Business Plan targets in Spelling and Punctuation and Grammar, again, something that makes us feel very proud.

Should you wish to have a more in depth conversation around NAPLAN, our whole school improvement processes or the other ways our school gathers meaningful data on student progress and achievement, please be invited to make an appointment with me [email protected] . Thank you.

Constable Care Safety School Excursion

Few people realise that not only does WA have the highest per capita state road toll in Australia, tragically our children make up a disproportionate number of these deaths when compared to other states and territories. The Constable Care Safety School is working to address our children's safety on the road through a unique early-intervention education approach.

Today our students from Rooms 4 and 5 enjoyed the Constable Care Safety Schools Excursion. They learnt heaps about vital

pedestrian, bike and public transport travel safety, having a go and …. even finding themselves at the ‘courthouse’ when they broke a rule!!

Safe 4 Kids Protective Behaviours

48 of our staff engaged with excellent classroom-based professional learning on Protective Behaviours. Holly Anne Martin, Director of Safe4Kids, and the staff from our network schools – West Balcatta, Balcatta, Osborne Park and Takari Primary Schools first thing last Monday as part of our School Development Day.

Our Schools Network has commissioned Ms Martin to model age-appropriate Protective Behaviours lessons to teachers and classes in each of our schools, as well as to conduct a Parent Information Evening. Parents may learn more about the Safe 4 Kids program by visiting https://safe4kids.com.au.

Tuart Hill will welcome Holly-ann to our school on Friday 2 November 2018 – Holly-ann will teach one lesson from the Safe 4 Kids Protective Behaviours Program to joint classes on an agreed rotation, to demonstrate best teaching practice and share the program content.

Parents will understand that teaching our students to protect themselves involves identifying, naming and discussing feelings, early warning signs, a network of trusted people to talk with, personal and private places and body parts, saying ‘no’ and safe and unsafe secrets.

Holly-ann is presenting a free parent workshop on Tuesday 23 October 2018, 7pm – 9 pm, in the Balcatta Senior High School Library, to explain Protective Behaviours education and outline what parents might expect when their child’s school delivers appropriate sections of any Protective Behaviours program. This free workshop is only offered to our Schools Network parents, and I strongly urge you to attend.

Please contact Lee Tanner at Balcatta Senior High School on 9345 8200 if you have any queries, thank you, I look forward to seeing you at the Parent Workshop Tuesday 23 October 2018, 7pm – 9 pm, in the Balcatta Senior High School Library.

Jump Jam

Our school has recently purchased the Jump Jam resources as a result of a collaborative decision by the Health and Physical Education Committee.

As an extra bonus, our school has been allocated a FREE incursion NEXT FRIDAY 19 October afternoon 2.20 pm to the end of the day, in the School Hall. The incursion is designed for students Year 1 – Year 6. Our Interschool Athletes will be away at Interschool Track and Field, an unfortunate coincidence that could not be avoided.

This is an incursion that is directly linked to the WA Curriculum, and all students will be supervised by class teachers who ensure safe participation. Parents may learn more about Jump Jam from their website https://www.jumpjam.co.nz/ - here is a little uTube sampler (WOW!!) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=doOIrAmW3aY .

If there is some particular reason you require that your child/ren do NOT participate, please email me [email protected] directly prior to Friday 19 October 2018; thank you.

2018 Semester Two Summative Student Reports

Our school will be joining the majority of primary schools across the state who are emailing Student Summative Student reports to parents. Parents will receive a link to their child/rens Summative Report that will allow you to save an electronic copy of the Report to any device of your choice, making the 2018 Summative Report available on demand for you and your extended family.

To ensure you receive your child/rens Summative Reports at the same time as your friends and peers, please make sure that we have your current email address linked to your child/rens information on our school Student Information System. Email [email protected] with any critical changes that the School needs to know; thank you.

While my experience has been that many people adore having an electronic copy of their child/rens summative reports that they can download and print as many times as they wish, should you like me to provide a hard copy of your child/rens Summative Report please let me know via email when I send you the link, and I will ensure that the hard copy is passed to your child when the time comes.

Our school plans to distribute the 2018 Semester Two Summative Reports to parents by close of business Friday 7 December 2018. This allows parents and carers a weekend to read through the Report, and you have a week to ask your class teacher, the specialist teachers or me to clarify any grade or comment.

Our teachers hope that parents will welcome this initiative to distribute Summative Reports a little earlier to allow for interviews if required and celebrations of superb student achievement.

2019 Class Placement Requests

Our staff is currently considering 2019 class lists. Student placements are planned very carefully with a number of factors taken into consideration. These include:

Special needs Friendship groups Social skills Academic performance Educational comments and requests

Comments and requests from parents should be addressed to me, [email protected] and must be received in writing by Friday 26 October 2018. I will consider all requests in conjunction with school organisational needs as well as professional advice from staff.

Requests for specific teachers will not be considered.

Please note - the Principal’s decision is final.

Please also assist us in our planning by letting the School know as soon as possible if your child will not be returning to our school in 2019. Thank you.

Student Uniform and Dress Standards

With summer upon us (perhaps…) I remind parents that our students must have the school-approved sun-safe hat for all outdoor activities including Phys Ed/ Sport and recess and Lunch play.

It is timely to refresh our Uniform standards – the Tuart Hill Polo shirt - red or Faction colour - with appropriate black bottoms – shorts, skort, skirt/ pants. Leggings and bike shorts are not appropriate for school please.

I have really enjoyed returning named items to our students and am particularly impressed with the families that have used iron-on name tags – but laundry marker does the job, too. If you name it, we can return it .

Our Uniform Shop is open each Friday 8.30 – 9.00 am, Room 10. Please see our website https://www.tuarthillps.wa.edu.au/school-community/p-c/uniform-shop for online ordering.
