One of the greatest desires that parents have is the desire that their children would continue to practice the Catholic faith. However, as many parents know, the desire sometimes does not correspond with the concrete reality. The research suggests much of the same. For every one Catholic that joins the Church six leave and 80% of those who leave, leave before they are 23.
There is a crisis in our Church; young people are leaving in droves. So as we reflect on the mystery of Pentecost, we are re-minded of why Jesus ascended into heaven. Jesus ascended into heaven so that we could receive the gift of the Holy Spirit and be his witnesses to the entire world--and some of us do not need to go far from our homes to find someone to witness to.
The gift of the Holy Spirit was given to the apostles (and to us!) to share the message of the Gospel. The word ‘Gospel’ in greek means ‘good message, good news’. In our experience, when we ask our children to come to mass, sometimes it is any-thing but good news to them! So how do we ‘preach’ the Gospel to them? How do we ‘share’ the Good News?
Did you know that online gaming is becoming one of the biggest sectors in the entertainment industry? There are around 1 billion active gamers worldwide and in 2017, $1.1 billion of prize money was distributed through 4166 tournaments! Why do so many young people turn to video games? Escape, laziness, child-ishness are some answers but I would propose four deeper rea-sons: the search for community, identity, mission and beauty.
I invite you to reflect as a Church community on how we can fulfill these desires which are written on the hearts of our young people because all of these things can be found in the Church and can be a source of Good News to our youth.
