Humour helps us to stay healthy. Laughter helps our body to fight disease and illness. Humour is like exercise for our mind and our feelings.

You can use laughter and humour to help someone else feel a little bit better.

You can cheer someone up when they have a problem, or they are feeling sad or worried, by being funny in a nice gentle way. Stop doing it if they do not like it.

Humour should not be used to pretend that you do not feel sad or worried.

Even though laughter can help you feel better when you have a problem, you still need to try to solve the problem, or deal with the unhappy feeling. Laughter does not make problems go away. It just help you to cope with them a little better.

Humour should not be used to hurt someone’s feelings.

It is unkind to laugh at someone else’s problems or bad luck, or make fun of the way another person look, thinks, speaks or acts. CONGRATULATIONS to Miss Patty 2018 Smith Medallist The 2018 Smith Medal is awarded to the best player in the Women's Touch Football Premier League division, based on a 3-2-1 count decided by selectors in each round of competition. The Smith Medal is named in honour of legend and hall of famer Karen Smith, introduced in 2002. It’s a best and fairest for a whole season, similar to the Brownlow AFL medal and the Dally M NRL award. A really big deal! We are so proud of Miss Patty, what a wonderful role model for our students! Miss Patty is a home-grown Western Suburbs Magpie having also represented both New South Wales and Australia. She also had success this year with the Women’s West Tigers inaugural NRL Touch Premiership team. “It has been such a massive year for me and I am so humbled to have received an award like this… I never in a million years thought I would ever receive such a distinguished honour….I was lucky enough to represent the West Tigers in the inaugural NRL Touch Football Premiership and I am so excited to see what next year will bring given the game’s expansion,” Miss Patty said. Next big competition? The World Cup in Kuala Lumpur 2019. Let’s cross our fingers Miss Patty is selected to represent Australia!

Primary Proms Concert 2018 Kakadu Concert 20.9.18 Thirty Stage 2 students shared their passion for music with 450 students from 16 schools, singing in the stunning 2018 Primary Proms Kakadu Concert at the Sydney Town Hall. Our students demonstrated their commitment by learning the 11 song repertoire, attending weekly lunch rehearsals and preliminary rehearsal days throughout the year. It was well worth it because we were lucky enough to be representing SSPS right on centre stage! Thank you for the amazing support from our parents and families and hats off to our amazing performers. Miss Y Lee & Miss T Ta Stage 2 Choir Teachers.

Dear Parents,

Strathfield Council has been a supporter of Children’s Week for many years. In honour of this, Strathfield Council would like to join our school community in celebrating Children’s Week 2018.

The theme for Children’s Week is ‘Children’s views and opinions are respected. They have the right to express those views freely in all matters affecting the child and the right to be heard’.

This year Strathfield Council will be running a competition for children aged 10-12 years old. Children taking part in the competition will need to write a two minute speech on the environment choosing from two options below:

1. What can we do to help? 2. Plastics – Why are they a problem?

Children are to submit their speech to Strathfield Council by email to the following address: [email protected] where a panel will judge the best speech from each school.

The winner will be given a prize and asked to present their speech at a school assembly. A council member will be present to hear this speech and congratulate them on the day.

Directions In Music Band Expo The Band Expo will be open to all Year 3 and Year 2 students in Week 4 from 2pm in the Hall. Students will be provided with all the information needed to join the band next year!

Stage 3 Opera House and The Rocks Tour

Last week Stage 3 embarked on an exciting adventure to tour the Sydney Opera House and The Rocks. Students enjoyed a behind the scenes tour of the different theatres in the Opera House, learning about the construction, and many different types of entertainment offered within its sails. Some students were even lucky enough to see the Sydney Symphony Orchestra practising for an upcoming concert. We learnt about life in the Rocks after the first fleet arrived, and observed and discussed some of the changes that have occurred to the shoreline and the Sydney Tank Stream. Despite the gloomy weather, students had a fantastic day and should be commended on their impeccable behaviour and conduct, with some tour guides even saying “This school has been such a pleasure to tour with, please pass on our many thanks back at school”. Well done Stage 3! Stage 3 Teachers and Supporting Staff

Kiss and Ride zones are for your child’s safety, your convenience and to minimise congestion and confusion

RULES• Kiss and Ride zones and ‘No Parking’ zones

operate under the same conditions – may stop to drop off or pick up children for a maximum of 2 minutes.

• Driver must remain in or within 3 metres of vehicle.

• Zone applies only during hours of operation.

REMEMBER• DO NOT LEAVE YOUR VEHICLE: to assist with traffic flow,

drivers should remain in the car whilst children get in and out. Children should travel with bags in the car (not in the boot).

• BE TIMELY: if your child does not get in or out of the vehicle within 2 minutes, you must leave and re-enter the No Parking zone.

• STAY IN SEQUENCE: don’t cut in the queue. Drop off or pick-up your child close to the top of the zone, allowing vehicles following you to enter the zone in an orderly manner.

• CHILD SAFETY: please ensure children get in or out of the vehicle on the kerb side. The back seat is the safest seat for children to travel in, regardless of the make of vehicle. Ensure children have their restraints securely fastened before driving off.

• NO U-TURNS: Do not make u-turns in busy school zones. They are dangerous and put children at risk. Fines and demerit points apply.

Kiss and Ride Zones need cooperation to ensure the safety of all children. Please drive carefully around school zones.
