AlertUR Test Set for February 13 The spring semester test of AlertUR will be on Thursday, Feb. 13 at 6 p.m. AlertUR is the emergency notification system for the University, including the Medical Center. In the event of an emergency, alerts are sent by voice, text, and email message. The purpose of the test is to activate the AlertUR system and check that you can be reached immediately. Before the Feb. 13 test, students and employees should review their contact information at https://alert.rochester.edu ; sign in with your NetID and password to verify the fastest method for reaching you. Warner School Dean Search Update The Warner Dean Search Committee has posted the complete position description for the next dean of the Warner School of Education on the Warner Dean Search Website . The position description was created with input from several stakeholder meetings with Warner faculty, staff, and students. The Warner Dean Search Committee is working with representatives from WittKieffer, an executive search firm that specializes in serving the not-for-profit sector, to identify candidates this spring, with the goal of having the next dean appointed and in office by the start of the next academic year in the fall. Jim Ver Steeg Named Assistant Vice President in Office of Equity and Inclusion Mercedes Ramirez Fernández, the Richard Feldman Vice President for Equity and Inclusion and the University’s chief diversity officer, has announced that Jim Ver Steeg ’15W (MS) has been appointed as the assistant vice president for public relations and engagement in the Office of Equity and Inclusion, effective February 1. Ver Steeg, who was previously the director of leadership communications in University Communications, will be responsible for the office’s official communications, and will play a key role in community relations initiatives. Ver Steeg is a PhD candidate at the Warner School, where he previously received a master's in higher education. His research centers around online leadership and advocacy training for LGBTQ college students. River Campus Libraries Data Grant Deadline is February 1 Grants are available for independent studies and unique data needs to current students from Arts, Sciences & Engineering, the Warner School of Education, and the Simon Business School. For spring 2020 semester grants, applications must be submitted to the River Campus Libraries Data Grant Review Board for evaluation by February 1. Students are encouraged to submit their applications as soon as they identify their dataset needs. Applications for the fall semester can be submitted as early as August 15. Cook, who studied in the doctoral program in educational leadership, is the former superintendent of Catholic Schools for the Diocese of Rochester. He will be the third president in Aquinas’s 118-year history. Read more. Harvey Named AVP of Student Engagement at Nazareth College Nazareth College recently welcomed Warner alumna Kim Harvey ‘16W (EdD) as its new assistant vice president of student engagement. Harvey, who studied in our higher education doctorate program, has 16 years experience in higher education in the areas of student success, enrollment management, and residential life, and her work with bystander intervention programs and transfer student initiatives has been recognized at both the regional and national level. Meuwissen Joins Journal Editorial Board Kevin Meuwissen, associate professor, has been introduced as one of four new editorial board members of Theory & Research in Social Education (TRSE), the official journal of the College and University Faculty Assembly of the National Council for the Social Studies. As a member of the board, he will participate in conversations with other scholars about TRSE's directions and consequentiality for researchers and educators; work to bring new ideas and scholars (both readers and authors) to TRSE; maintain the kind of formative feedback and growth orientation that the editor and associate editors currently foster within the journal; and collaborate with other scholars to advocate for and strengthen the position of TRSE. Marsh Publishes Article Valerie Marsh, assistant professor and assistant director for the Center for Urban Education Success at Warner, published the article "Understanding Chronic Absenteeism: What Research Tells Us about Poor Attendance at School" in American Educator, winter 2019-20. The article details how an engaging school culture has led to an improvement in school attendance at East High School. Read the article. Finnigan Participates in Advisory Board Meeting and Technical Working Group, Chairs Research Panel Kara Finnigan, professor, recently participated in a Research Advisory Board meeting for Research on Education Access and Choice (REACH) in January in New Orleans, La. REACH is an Institute of Education Sciences (IES)-funded research center on school choice involving scholars from across the country. The meeting focused on the preliminary quantitative and qualitative research results in five areas: planning and oversight, information, transportation, teacher policy, and enrollment. Additionally, Finnigan participated in the Technical Working Group, which is an advisory group, for the Regional Educational Laboratory Northeast and Islands (REL NEI). REL NEI is one of 10 IES-funded Regional Educational Laboratories that works with districts and states in its region to provide technical assistance, conduct applied research, and connect policymakers with research. The meeting was in Cambridge, Mass. in January, and focused on improving research utilization by educational leaders and policymakers in several key areas, including: teacher retention, socio-emotional learning, professional development, and school and district improvement. Lastly, Finnigan provided national service for a fourth year by serving on the Louisiana Board of Regents’ Research Competitiveness Subprogram (RCS) Panel, serving as chair of the RCS Social Sciences Research Panel. RCS funds projects that strengthen the fundamental research base and competitiveness of Louisiana’s public and private universities. The subprogram is a stimulus opportunity available to researchers who are currently not competitive for federal support but show strong potential for achieving national research competitiveness in an area funded by the federal government within a limited span of time. Hursh Edits Journal Special Issue David Hursh, professor, edited the special issue of the journal Policy Futures in Education, vol. 18, issue1. The issue was themed "The End of Neoliberalism." Read the journal, including Hursh's introduction. Choppin, Callard, and Carson Co-Publish Two Articles and a Book Chapter Jeffrey Choppin, professor and chair of teaching and curriculum; Cindy Callard, professor and executive director of the Center for Professional Development and Education Reform; and Cynthia Carson, academic program coordinator, published two recent articles and a book chapter. The publications were completed as part of the SyncOn project, a National Science Foundation-funded project that provides teachers in rural school districts access to innovative online professional learning experiences in mathematics, and studies the online activities to better understand the limitations and benefits. "Transitioning Face-To-Face Mathematics Professional Development to Synchronous Online Implementation: Design Considerations and Challenges" was published in the Journal of Mathematical Education Leadership, vol. 20, issue 2. "Bridging the Distance: One-On-One Video Coaching Supports Rural Teachers" was published in The Learning Professional, vol. 40, no. 6. Read more. Magee Helps Publish New Leadership Education & Development CAS Standards Brian Magee ‘19W (EdD), adjunct professor, served on a team of scholars, practitioners, and experts in leadership studies to help re-write and publish the revised set of standards for Leadership Education & Development for the Council for the Advancement of Standards in Higher Education (CAS). These standards have evolved substantially as leadership education is an important and evolving functional area in higher education. Lynch Co-Publishes Journal Article Martin Lynch, associate professor, published the article "The Associations Between Tolerance for Ambiguity and Internal and External Motivation in the Scholarly Activities of Doctoral Students" in Education and Self Development, no. 14, issue 4. Additionally, Finnigan participated in the Technical Working Group, which is anadvisory group, for the Regional Educational Laboratory Northeast and Islands (RELNEI). REL NEI is one of 10 IES-funded Regional Educational Laboratories that workswith districts and states in its region to provide technical assistance, conduct appliedresearch, and connect policymakers with research. The meeting was in Cambridge,Mass. in January, and focused on improving research utilization by educational leadersand policymakers in several key areas, including: teacher retention, socio-emotionallearning, professional development, and school and district improvement.

Lastly, Finnigan provided national service for a fourth year by serving on the LouisianaBoard of Regents’ Research Competitiveness Subprogram (RCS) Panel, serving as chairof the RCS Social Sciences Research Panel. RCS funds projects that strengthen thefundamental research base and competitiveness of Louisiana’s public and privateuniversities. The subprogram is a stimulus opportunity available to researchers who arecurrently not competitive for federal support but show strong potential for achievingnational research competitiveness in an area funded by the federal government within alimited span of time.

Hursh Edits Journal Special IssueDavid Hursh, professor, edited the special issue of the journal Policy Futures inEducation, vol. 18, issue1. The issue was themed "The End of Neoliberalism." Read thejournal, including Hursh's introduction.

Choppin, Callard, and Carson Co-Publish Two Articles and a BookChapterJeffrey Choppin, professor and chair of teaching and curriculum; Cindy Callard,professor and executive director of the Center for Professional Development andEducation Reform; and Cynthia Carson, academic program coordinator, published tworecent articles and a book chapter. The publications were completed as part of theSyncOn project, a National Science Foundation-funded project that provides teachers inrural school districts access to innovative online professional learning experiences inmathematics, and studies the online activities to better understand the limitations andbenefits.

"Transitioning Face-To-Face Mathematics Professional Development to SynchronousOnline Implementation: Design Considerations and Challenges" was published in theJournal of Mathematical Education Leadership, vol. 20, issue 2.

"Bridging the Distance: One-On-One Video Coaching Supports Rural Teachers" waspublished in The Learning Professional, vol. 40, no. 6. Read more.

Magee Helps Publish New Leadership Education & DevelopmentCAS StandardsBrian Magee ‘19W (EdD), adjunct professor, served on a team of scholars,practitioners, and experts in leadership studies to help re-write and publish the revisedset of standards for Leadership Education & Development for the Council for theAdvancement of Standards in Higher Education (CAS). These standards have evolvedsubstantially as leadership education is an important and evolving functional area inhigher education.
