Summary

1

February nonfarm job estimates were revised upward by 1,200 jobs from 1,413,000 to 1,414,200. Private

sector jobs were revised upward by 1,300 jobs from 1,155,600 to 1,156,900. Estimates are seasonally

adjusted.

Kansas gained 2,100 jobs over the month. Over the past 12 months, the number of nonfarm jobs increased

by 10,700 jobs. Estimates are seasonally adjusted.

The private sector gained 2,200 jobs over the month, or 0.2%. The largest gains were in Trade,

Transportation and Utilities (+1,100); Professional and Business Services (+1,000); and Financial Activities

(+700). Over the past 12 months, the private sector gained 9,400 jobs. Estimates are seasonally adjusted.

Average weekly hours worked in the private sector increased over the year from 33.7 hours to 33.9 hours in

March 2018. Average nominal hourly earnings increased by $0.58 to $23.76 (+2.5%). Average nominal

weekly earnings increased by $24.29 (+3.1%) over the past 12 months. Estimates are not seasonally adjusted.

In March the labor force decreased by 810, the pool of unemployed decreased by 408 and employment

decreased by 402. Estimates are seasonally adjusted.

The unemployment rate remained at 3.4% in March. Estimates are seasonally adjusted.

Over the past 12 months, initial claims decreased by 4,738 and continued claims decreased by 8,985 (these

numbers include all programs). The number of individuals receiving unemployment insurance benefits

decreased by 3,788 over the year. Average duration of benefit receipt increased by 0.3 weeks over the past

12 months. Estimates are not seasonally adjusted.

Private sector jobs, average weekly hours worked, and real hourly earnings all increased compared to last March. This is only the third month during the last year that all three measures of demand for labor have been positive.

• The labor force decreased by a net of 810 individuals to a total of 1,475,318 participants over the

month. Estimates are seasonally adjusted.

• Employment decreased by a net of 402 individuals to 1,425,233 over the month. Estimates are

seasonally adjusted.

• The pool of the unemployed decreased by a net of 408 individuals to 50,085 over the month. Estimates

are seasonally adjusted.

• The unemployment rate remained at 3.4% in March. Estimates are seasonally adjusted. The revised

unemployment rate for February remained at 3.4%.

• Over the last 12 months the unemployment rate decreased from 3.7% in March 2017 to 3.4% in March

2018. Estimates are seasonally adjusted.
