Embassy of India Abu Dhabi in association with India Tourist Office Dubai conducted a India Tourism Road Show in Abu Dhabi on 8 th December 2015 for Emirati women. UAE has emerged as the second largest market for Indian leather industry growing at a cumulative growth rate of 55.68 per cent, while the industry has reached an all time high value of $6.5 billion in 2014-15. The Dubai Centre for Islamic Banking and Finance (DCIBF) of Hamdan Bin Mohammad Smart University (HBMSU) entered into an agreement with Zhishang Interculture Communication (Beijing) Co., Ltd. (ZSICC as listed in Shanghai stock exchange), to facilitate collaboration in matters relating to Islamic economy and banking and finance. In the presence of Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of UAE Armed Forces, and Xi Jinping, President of the People’s Republic of China, an agreement was signed to launch a $10 billion strategic co-investment fund, which will further strengthen the economic and political ties between the two nations. Dubai received bids for Jebel Ali sewagetreatment plant

The local/Belgian Bel Hasa Six Constructsubmitted a bid of AED1.319bn ($359m) forthe contract to build the second phase ofthe Jebel Ali sewage treatment plant. Theproject client, Dubai Municipality, receivedbids from five other groups. The otherbidders are: Al-Ghandi (local)/ConsolidatedContractors Company (CCC) (Athens-based)/WTE (Germany)/Wabag (India) –AED1.362bn, China State ConstructionEngineering Corporation (China) –AED1.366bn, China Petroleum (China) -AED1.459bn, Samsung Engineering (SouthKorea) – AED1.481bn, Kharafi National(Kuwait) – AED1.620bnThe municipality is planning to increase thecapacity of the existing Jebel Ali sewagetreatment plant (STP) by 375,000 cubicmetres a day (cm/d), bringing it to 675,000cm/d.

Local contractor wins Abu Dhabi hospitalcontract

The local Commodore Contracting Companywon a contract to build a 600-bed hospitalin Abu Dhabi. Burjeel Hospital, a part of VPSHealthcare Group, is awarded AED1bn($272m) contract. The eight-floor projecthas a delivery time of 30 months and whenfinished will have a built-up area of 100,000square metres. Burjeel is reported to haveembarked on a $1.5bn expansion in theUAE’s capital over the next three years andplans to open four hospitals, five specialitycentres and 10 medical centres.Construction of 400-bed Burjeel MedicalCity in Mohammed bin Zayed City will cost

AED1.4bn and it is expected to be ready inthe next two years.

Nakheel confirms sukuk profit payment

Nakheel confirmed that it has made a profitpayment of AED220m ($60m) on its tradecreditor sukuk. The Dubai-based propertydeveloper said that the instructions havebeen sent to Deutsche Bank, the registrarand paying agent for the Sukuk, to make theprofit payment to all sukuk holders on thedue date of 15 December 2015 against theSukuk issued amount of AED4.4bn. InOctober, Nakheel reported a net profit ofAED3.61bn ($984m) for the first ninemonths of 2015. The figure is an increase ofAED1bn, or 39 per cent, on the AED2.6bnprofit made during the same period lastyear. It is also almost equal to Nakheel’sAED3.68bn of profit for all of 2014.

Tabreed finalises Dhs192.5m loan facilityfor its district cooling plant

National Central Cooling Company(Tabreed), the leading UAE-based districtcooling utility infrastructure company,announced it has completed the signing ofan Dhs192.5 million long term limitedrecourse project finance facility withEmirates NBD for the district cooling plant itis developing for Dubai Parks and Resorts(DPR).

Al Fahim Group signs agreement withEtihad Airways

Al Fahim Group, one of the mostestablished family businesses in this region,announced the signing of a long-termagreement with Etihad Airways, to provideexclusive deals on airline tickets to

Solar spotlight on Abu Dhabi in race tobecome renewables powerhouse

Abu Dhabi will set the pace over the nexttwo years in the race to become theregion’s renewables powerhouse as areduction in electricity subsidies makessolar rooftop applications more viable inthe emirate. Companies that providefinance and install solar photovoltaic (PV)panels on building rooftops will increasinglyfocus efforts in Abu Dhabi in the next twoyears. Abu Dhabi already reduced itssubsidies at the start of the year after itraised electricity prices.

Abu Dhabi’s Midfield Terminal on time toarrive by National Day 2017

Abu Dhabi Airports Company (Adac) istargeting a December 2017 opening datefor its new Midfield Terminal building, a keycomponent of the company’s expansion, astraffic is on track to double over the nextdecade. The new terminal is a prestigeproject for the Government-owned Adacand is a linchpin of Abu Dhabi’s broaderplans to increase tourist traffic as part ofthe Vision 2030 strategy to diversify theeconomy. The Midfield Terminal project,which began in September 2012, will be 70per cent complete by the end of this year,said the Adac chairman Ali Al Mansoori. Theterminal will have 28,000 square metres ofcommercial space – including eightexecutive lounges, an unusually highnumber that reflects the effort to positionthe terminal for an increasing share ofhigher-end passengers as the traffic growthrate tapers off.

Gulf Marine Services secures $620m six-year syndicated financing

Gulf Marine Services (GMS), a leadingprovider of advanced self-propelled self-elevating support vessels (SESVs) servingthe offshore oil, gas and renewable energysectors, announced that it has secured anew $620 million (Dh2.2 billion) financingfacility. The syndicated financing combinesIslamic and conventional facilities and willreplace GMS’ existing funding facilities withno changes to the previous borrowingcovenants. The facility has a term of sixyears and comprises a $375 million termfacility, a $175 million committed capexfacility and $70 million facility for generalworking capital purposes; a further $300million uncommitted facility has also beenagreed.

According to recent industry reports, UAE isthe third largest market for business aircraftin Middle East with 17% market share. TheMiddle East and Africa take a 7.9 per centshare of the global business jet shipmentsin 2014. According to 2014 General AviationStatistical Databook & 2015 IndustryOutlook issued by GAMA, an internationaltrade association representing more than85 of the world’s leading manufacturers ofgeneral aviation airplanes, total airplaneshipments increased to 2,454 airplanes,while billings rose to $24.5 billion in 2014.

UAE’s first iMall to open in Sharjah in 2016

The first specialised mall in electronicproducts and technological services inSharjah and the UAE, with investmentsamounting to Dhs180 million, will open towelcome participating stores soon. ‘iMall’,which is the first of its kind in the UAE andbeing developed by “Nice Home RealEstate” the local developer, is located inSharjah, and can be accessed easily andquickly from Sharjah and Dubai airports.

Drake & Scull awarded Dhs245 millioncontract

Drake & Scull Engineering (DSE), asubsidiary of Drake & Scull International(DSI), announced that it has been awardedDhs245 million contract to deliver MEPworks for a project in Abu Dhabi. Under theterms of the agreement, DSE will renderEngineering, Detailing, Procurement,Testing, Commissioning, and Handoverservices for the project’s MEP, FireProtection and Natural Gas Systems.

Abu Dhabi utility Adwea seeks solarproject partner

The Abu Dhabi Water and ElectricityAuthority (Adwea) announced a tender fora 350-megawatt solar photovoltaic (PV)project to be built in Sweihan, about 120kilometres east of Abu Dhabi. Although theemirate has 110MW of solar power, thiswould be the first such project carried outby Adwea. The selected developer wouldown up to 40 per cent of a special-purposevehicle, with Adwea taking the remainingequity, according to the tenderannouncement.

Umm Al Qaiwain Free Trade Zone growingfast

Umm Al Qaiwain Free Trade Zone’sdevelopment projects have beenprogressing at a fast pace and registers 850companies, according to Sheikh Khalid binRashid Al Mualla, Chairman of PortsCustoms and Free Zone Corporation.Infrastructure development for the Phase 2has begun and they are looking to rope infactories and manufacturers. Thegovernment has allocated an additionalland of approximately 4 square kilometers,which can be leased out to the customers.In addition, they are constructingwarehouses, offices and residentialbuildings to meet the demand.

DSI subsidiary secures Dhs121m EPCcontract

Drake & Scull Engineering (DSE), thesubsidiary of Drake & Scull International(DSI) announced that it has secured aDhs121 million EPC (Engineering,Procurement & Construction) contract todesign and install a chilled waterdistribution network for a prominent mixeduse development in Dubai. Under the termsof the agreement, DSE will design and build

an underground chilled water pipe networkin the mixed use development which willfeature pre-insulated pipes varying in sizesranging from 100mm to 1,200mm for anapproximate total length of 32km.

Dubai’s non-oil foreign trade hits Dhs966billion

Dubai has managed to contain the impactof the instability of the global economicenvironment, marked by a decline incommodity prices and currency rates, tomaintain a strong economic performance in2015. Despite the adverse impact of therecent downturn in oil and precious metalsprices - including gold, Dubai’s non-oilforeign trade reached Dhs966 billion duringthe first nine months of 2015. Imports hadthe biggest share of the overall trade with avalue of Dhs597 billion while exports andre-exports totalled Dhs100 billion andDhs269 billion respectively. From January toSeptember 2015, direct trade contributedDhs603 billion of Dubai’s total foreign tradevalue; while free zones contributed Dhs340billion and customs warehouses Dhs23billion.

Investments in solar power help achievezero energy buildings

UAE has the right regulatory environmentto foster solar energy investments, whichwill help achieve net zero energy buildingsto support the nation’s sustainabledevelopment goals, experts said at a FocusDay organised by the Emirates GreenBuilding Council (EmiratesGBC). Masdar Institute Research successfullyproved UAE Desert Sand Can Store SolarEnergy up to 1000 C

Masdar Institute researchers successfullydemonstrated that desert sand from theUAE could be used in concentrated solarpower (CSP) facilities to store thermalenergy up to 1000 C. The research projectcalled ‘Sandstock’ has been seeking todevelop a sustainable and low-cost gravity-fed solar receiver and storage system, usingsand particles as the heat collector, heattransfer and thermal energy storage media.Desert sand from the UAE can now beconsidered possible thermal energy storage(TES) material. Its thermal stability, specificheat capacity, and tendency to agglomeratehave been studied at high temperatures.

Gulf Marine Services builds new facility inPort Zayed

Gulf Marine Services (GMS) will build a newport facility to serve as home to thecompany’s jack-up barges at Port Zayed,Abu Dhabi’s oldest commercial port. At42,500 square feet, the facility will be twicethe size of the London-listed company’sMussaffah site. GMS sells jack-up barges,also known as self-propelled, self-elevatedsupport vessels (SESVs), to the oil and gasindustry. Its barges can perform some ofthe tasks of drilling rigs. It has a fleet of 13vessels and plans to add two by the end ofnext year.

Dewa sets record-low target for thirdphase of Mohammed bin Rashid AlMaktoum Solar Park

Dubai is aiming for tariffs of less than 5 UScents per kilowatt-hour for the third phaseof the Mohammed bin Rashid Al MaktoumSolar Park totalling 800 megawatts. Mr.Saeed Al Tayer, the managing director ofDubai Electricity and Water Authority(Dewa), said in Dubai that the utility’s target

for the upcoming tender should set lowerprices than ever before. This year, UAEmade headlines with what was at the timethe world’s cheapest solar energy. Aconsortium led by Saudi Arabia’s AcwaPower and TSK of Spain won an award forthe second phase of the solar park, totalling200MW, at 5.84 US cents per kilowatt-hour.

VP clears Dhs46.1b Dubai budget

Vice President and Prime Minister of UAEand Ruler of Dubai, His Highness SheikhMohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum hasapproved budget for the Emirate of Dubaifor the year 2016 which is 12 percent morethan previous year budget with no deficitand provides more than 3,000 jobopportunities. The budget will continue tostimulate economic growth and has totalexpenditure of Dhs46.1 billion, with anoperating surplus of Dh3.4 billion.

Adnic signs partnership with MBRF for SMEsupport

Abu Dhabi National Insurance Company(Adnic) announced the signing of apartnership with the Mohammed BinRashid Fund (MBRF) for SME Support (TheFund), an initiative of Dubai SME, theagency of the Department of EconomicDevelopment (DED) in Dubai mandated todevelop the small and medium enterprise(SME) sector, for providing insurance toentrepreneurs supported by the Fund.Adnic will provide comprehensive insuranceprotection to cover the small and medium-sized business owners receiving seed capitalfrom the Fund against a variety ofcontingencies, from loss or damage tocontents and business premises to death,disability, or illness that impairs their abilityto work. In addition to this, Adnic offers

Dubai-based Aster DM Healthcare eyesacquisitions to maintain fast growth

Aster DM Healthcare plans to maintainrevenue growth of up to 30 per cent as theDubai-based healthcare provider investsabout US$250 million in the next two tothree years in the Arabian Gulf region andlooks for acquisitions. The company’scurrent compound annual growth rate(Cagr) between 2013 and this year was 32per cent. Aster, which last week opened itsfirst facility in Bahrain, is building fivehospitals in the UAE and another one inQatar. Aster, which owns hospitals, clinicsand pharmacies, has six hospitals in theregion. It is also expanding an existinghospital in the Saudi capital of Riyadh afterraising its stake in the facility to 97 per centfrom 40 per cent in October.

Jafza to lure more Indian firms

Jebel Ali Free Zone (Jafza), the flagship freezone entity of Dubai and a renowned tradeand logistics hub for the wider Middle Eastregion spanning from West Asia, the CIS,Africa and Indian Subcontinent, hasconducted a highly successful 4-dayroadshow, which also included an exclusiveinvestor seminar, in Mumbai to attractmore Indian multinationals into the FreeZone. Jafza expects to attract a significantnumber of new Indian companies from theroadshow. During the 4-day roadshow Jafzaofficials had several meetings with Indianbusinesses. Jafza is currently home to over800 leading Indian companies who areserving all key markets in the region fromtheir regional base in the Free Zone. Thenumber of Indian companies in the FreeZone in 2014 posted a growth of 10 percent.

Trade between UAE and India reachesDhs216.7 billion in 2014-15

India is UAE’s largest trading partner andbilateral trade between the two countrieshas been growing at a rapid pace. In 2014-15 total trade between the two nationstotalled $59 billion (Dhs216.7 billion) andthe authorities of both countries aretargeting a growth of 60 per cent over thenext five years.

Elecrama 2016 is in a position to open doorsto further grow business between the twonations. The show has attracted over 40leading exporters of leather products from

India. The event was held in associationwith the Indian missions in UAE and IndiaTrade & Exhibition Centre (ITEC), Sharjah.

Trade deals worth Dhs3.7b signed at SIAL

The sixth annual SIAL Middle Eastexhibition, the fastest growing event for theregion’s food, drink and hospitality sectors,was conducted at the Abu Dhabi NationalExhibition Centre (Adnec) from 7-9December 2015 with confirmed tradeagreements worth in excess of Dhs3.7billion. The organisers said that over 21,500trade visitors attended the event, with atotal of 30 international pavilions at theshow.From India, FICCI participated the SIAL witharound 60 Indian companies under “IndiaPavilion”.

Hamriyah Free Zone Authority (HFZA)delegation participated in World of Industry(WIN) exhibition that took place at PragatiMaidan in New Delhi. Theseries of workshops and discussionsorganised by DED’s Business Protectionsection highlighted DED’s mechanisms onbusiness protection, as well as informedtraders in Dubai and abroad about thesection’s duties and how to file businesscomplaints.

The Dubai Centre for Islamic Banking andFinance (DCIBF) of Hamdan Bin MohammadSmart University (HBMSU) entered into anagreement with Zhishang IntercultureCommunication (Beijing) Co., Ltd. (ZSICC aslisted in Shanghai stock exchange), tofacilitate collaboration in matters relating toIslamic economy and banking and finance.The signing of the Memorandum ofUnderstanding (MoU) held at the HBMSUcampus. The agreement complements theobjectives of the official visit of the state to

China early this month that includeddiscussions on trade, economic, social andcultural exchange opportunities betweenthe two countries.

LuLu makes headway into retail in Egypt

LuLu Group plans to invest about US$300million over the next two years to set up 10hypermarkets in Egypt as it eyes expansionin North Africa’s biggest economy. LuLu,which opened its first hypermarket in Egyptin 2010, considers the country to be “astrong economy with high marketpotential”, the Abu Dhabi-based companysaid. Owned by the Indian businessman MAYusuffali, who was ranked first on theForbes magazine list of the richest 100Indians in the Arab world last year, the LuLuchain is expanding rapidly across theArabian Gulf, Asia and now Egypt. LuLuannounced plans to open 15 hypermarketsin Indonesia over the next two years as theAbu Dhabi-based retailer rolls out a $300mexpansion in the South East Asian country.The group’s overall investment over thecoming five years in Indonesia will reach$500m.

ADNEC partners with US-based DCI topromote Abu Dhabi business tourism

Abu Dhabi National Exhibitions Company,ADNEC, announced its partnership withDevelopment Counsellors International,DCI, a firm specialising in economicdevelopment and tourism marketing, basedin New York City, to promote ADNEC’svenues and facilities in the US and Canada.The partnership is aligned with ADNEC’songoing efforts to enhance Abu Dhabi’sreputation as a major hub for businesstourism. It will allow ADNEC to attract moreinternational associations and event

Egypt seeks to drum up Gulf investments

Egyptian Prime Minister Sherif Ismail metSaudi officials and investors on Dec. 13,2015 in a bid to drum up more investmentas Egypt seeks to revive an economysuffering from a foreign currency shortage.Egypt attracted $12 billion in pledges fromGulf countries, where President AbdelFattah al-Sisi urged foreign investors to helpEgypt recover from the turmoil unleashedafter the 2011 uprising overthrew HosniMubarak. About $6 billion was deposited inEgypt's central bank to help replenish itsdwindling foreign currency reserves. Therest was to come as investments, many ofwhich are still being negotiated.

UAE-China ties further strengthened

In the presence of Sheikh Mohamed BinZayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of AbuDhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander ofUAE Armed Forces, and Xi Jinping, Presidentof the People’s Republic of China, anagreement was signed to launch a $10billion strategic co-investment fund, whichwill further strengthen the economic andpolitical ties between the two nations. “Theformation of this investment fund is areflection of the growing partnershipbetween UAE and People’s Republic ofChina,” said Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed.

Masdar and China Vanke signed MoU

Masdar, Abu Dhabi’s renewable energycompany, and China Vanke Co. Ltd. (Vanke),

the Masdar Institute, BGI and ChinaMerchants New Energy Group Limited(CMNE) signed a Memorandum ofUnderstanding (MOU) for collaboration onpotential projects in both the UAE andChina. With historically strong ties and arelationship of trust and respect, UAE andChina are solidifying these bonds byexploring new partnership opportunitiesacross various industry sectors. Through theMOU, the companies are seeking to identifyareas of mutual interest and the scope ofpotential mutual activities, laying afoundation for future collaborationbetween the signatories.

Mubadala Petroleum and CNPC signed co-operation agreement

Mubadala Petroleum and China NationalPetroleum Corporation (CNPC) signed anagreement to foster greater co-operationbetween the two companies in the oil andgas exploration and production sector. Theagreement identifies potential areas forcollaboration in the upstream oil and gassector outside of the United Arab Emiratesand, more specifically, new and existingprojects including onshore conventionalprojects, offshore projects and LNGprojects.

UAE set for rising level of China investment

An increasing number of Chinesecompanies are expected to invest in theUAE’s property and manufacturing sectorsas the government encourages companiesto look overseas for growth. Chinesecompanies are investing more abroad,allowing the country to achieve a balancebetween inward and outward directinvestment for the first time last year as the

UAE ratifies WTO's Trade FacilitationAgreement

UAE has ratified the Trade FacilitationAgreement, concluded by the World TradeOrganisation members at the BaliMinisterial Conference in 2013, and willaccordingly notify the WTO. In UAE'sstatement at the WTO's 10th MinisterialConference in Nairobi, Kenya, Sultan binSaeed Al Mansouri, Minister of Economy,said the UAE, as a member of the WTO andthe international community has a strongbelief in, and attaches great importance tothe multi-lateral trade system, establishedon clear principles. UAE, he noted, iscommitted to contributing constructivelyand substantially to the success of thesystem and the conditions of multilateraltrade and the Doha Development Agenda.

Turkish Airline increases flights to Dubai

Turkish Airlines announced its maiden flightfrom its second airport in Istanbul, theSabiha Gokcen International Airport, toDubai commenced from December 25,2015. Turkish Airlines currently flies 14weekly flights to Dubai from its hub atIstanbul Ataturk Airport. The inclusion ofseven additional flights per week from andto Sabiha Gokcen, which is on the Asian sideof Istanbul, will increase its capacity onroutes to Dubai by nearly 50 per cent.

Foreigners buy Dhs756.3m shares on DFM

Foreign investors purchased Dhs 756.3million worth of shares on Dubai FinancialMarket (DFM) from 20th to 23rd December,2015 and sold Dhs740.4 million in the same

period, Dubai Financial Market said. Netforeign investment on the market reachedDhs16 million, as aggregate buy.

Swedish firm GHP Speciality Care to runAjman hospitals

A Swedish healthcare company has beenchosen by the Government to operate twohospitals in the Northern Emirates. GHPSpeciality Care, which runs the RashidCentre for Diabetes and Research in Ajman,said it had secured an initial five-year dealafter “an extensive procurement process”to run public healthcare facilities in theemirate, which when fully operationalwould provide care to more than 200,000patients a year.

UAE, Algeria to boost economic relations

Mr. Sultan Bin Saeed Al Mansouri, UAE’sMinister for Economy, met with SalehAttiya, Ambassador of Algeria to the UAE,to discuss ways of boosting economic andtrade cooperation between the twocountries. Al Mansouri reiterated the UAE’skeenness to develop bilateral relations withAlgeria for the benefit of the two countriesand their peoples. He also commended theimportant role that the UAE-Algeria JointCommittee plays in advancing relations andexploring opportunities for cooperation invital sectors.

ADFD extends loan of Dhs77m forMetolong Dam

The Abu Dhabi Fund for Development,ADFD, extended Dhs77 million ($21 million)in concessionary loans towards theconstruction of the Metolong Dam in theKingdom of Lesotho, a land-locked nationsurrounded by South Africa. Construction of

the dam, which provides 71,000 cubicmetres of drinking water daily, was recentlycompleted by the government of Lesotho.ADFD’s loan was used to financeconstruction work of the concrete dam andits outbuildings, as well as for pumping andpurifying plants and distribution pipelines.
