EMC Storage Integrator for SAP NetWeaver LVM Overview

Executive summary

EMC® Storage Integrator (ESI) for SAP NetWeaver Landscape Virtualization Manager (LVM) is an adapter for SAP NetWeaver LVM. ESI for SAP NetWeaver LVM has two main components: an ESI adapter and a web service called the EMC High Level Storage (HLS) Library Administration Console (EHAC). EHAC provides a deployment utility and a single point of management for storage administrators to:

◆ Manage vCenter servers

◆ Assign storage systems and their pools to users

◆ Provide a gateway for the ESI adapter for SAP LVM to access storage systems

With EHAC, administrators can manage storage space assigned to individual users by controlling read/write access to the storage pools for each storage system. The adapter supports physical and virtual machines with support for EMC VNX® and EMC Symmetrix® VMAX®, VCE Vblock converged storage using either VMAX or VNX storage, and a VMware hypervisor that uses virtual machine disks (VMDK) and raw device mapping (RDM).

The ESI for SAP NetWeaver LVM Adapter provides storage management capabilities within SAP NetWeaver LVM and enables SAP administrators to manage cloning and snapshots of an SAP system that is managed by NetWeaver LVM and is running on EMC storage.

Product overviewThe ESI adapter is distributed as a Java Enterprise Archive (EAR) file that complies with SAP NetWeaver LVM specifications. The adapter, which is shown in Figure 1, runs in the SAP NetWeaver Java server with the LVM add-on installed. The ESI for SAP NetWeaver LVM Adapter integrates with EMC file and block storage systems.

You can use EHAC to manage one or more EMC file or block storage systems. In SAP NetWeaver LVM, the adapter uses the same Java Application Server to query the storage systems, so storage can be provisioned as part of system cloning.

Prerequisites

Notes: • For information on how to install EMC Solutions Enabler, refer to

https://support.emc.com/products/2071_Solutions-Enabler/Documentation/

• SMI-S Provider 4.6.1.6, which is installed on the EHAC server, uses an ECOM account. This WBEM infrastructure is used for both proxy and embedded environments across all EMC hardware and software platforms to ensure consistent implementation and experience across EMC products. For information about how to install EMC SMI-S Provider, refer to https://support.emc.com/products/5587_SMI-S-Provider.

2. Complete the following prerequisites for the SAP NetWeaver LVM management system:Install and configure the SAP NetWeaver Java Server with the releases described in Table 1.

• Install and configure the SAP NeWeaver LVM 2.0 add-on to run on the SAP NetWeaver Java server 7.3x.

• Complete the configuration steps for the SAP NetWeaver LVM 2.0 Setup before you configure the infrastructure and the storage managers.

• Store the SAP file systems (/sapmnt, /usr/sap/SID, and /usr/sap/trans) and the SAP Database file systems (/oracle/SID, oracle/SID/sapdata1, for example) in separate datastores from the operating system of the source and target virtual machines.

• To facilitate SAP, EMC, and VMware support, list which SAP virtual machines are used and which SAP file systems are stored in which datastores.

Note: As a best practice, to facilitate and speed up any troubleshooting, document in high level detail the SAP, VMware, and EMC environments for each virtual machine. Include the masking views being used, physical storage device IDs, datastores names, virtual machine settings, SCSI controller number, and ports used by each hard disk. Include also the guest OS device IDs, VGs, LVs, and file systems being used for each datastore.

• For SAP managed environments based on VMAX storage systems, add a minimum of one GateKeeper configured as phyiscal RDMs to each virtual machine to be involved in SAP NetWeaver LVM storage-based operations like Instance prepare/unprepare, relocation, system rename, system copy and system refresh processes.

• When working with SAP LVM 2.0 and ESI 2.1, only the SAP and SAP database filesystems (/sapmnt, /usr/sap/SID, /oracle/SID/sapdata, for example) are cloned using ESI cloning technologies. Both the source and target virtual machine must have their operating systems installed in advance in their own hard disks in separate datastores to avoid delaying the cloning process.

• The SAP source and target systems instances must already be installed or configured according to the SAP Adaptive Enable concept, with independent virtual IPs, virtual hostnames, and file systems.

• Install the latest SAP Host Agent patch level on the SAP systems to be cloned by SAP NetWeaver LVM 2.0 with ESI 2.1.

The following procedures configure the VMDK so that it can respond to a SCSI inquiry and then verify that utility and library files are installed on the SAP host.

◆ The procedure uses the following file example:

vmfs/volumes/5200af41-812305ce-8c2c-60735c68a5da/SAPSource/SAPSource_2.vmdk 1

◆ The unique ID associated with the virtual disk is shown as a line in this configuration file:

ddb.uuid = "60 00 C2 91 f0 3d 87 83-33 72 4a 1a 7b ea 0a 66"

◆ By default, the VMware ESXi server will not respond to a SCSI inquiry from the guest OS to read the VPD that is associated with the virtual disk. We need VPD information associated with virtual disk and that should be readable from the guest OS using SCSI inquiry.

◆ To make VMDK respond to SCSI inquiry to read VPD page, the vmware guest OS must be configured to have a "disk.enableUUID = "TRUE" entry in the guest OS .vmx configuration file.

Configure the VMDK so that it can respond to a SCSI inquiry

To configure the VMDK:

1. Log in to the VMware ESXi server, or log in to vCenter, which manages the SAP host.

2. Select the host, and then select Edit virtual machine settings.

Installing and configuring virtual hosts

Verify that utility and library package files are installed on the SAP host

To verify that SG utility and library package files are installed:

1. Log in to the SAP host.

2. Run the following command: rpm -qa | grep sg3*

The SG utility and library package files are installed on the host if sg3_utils and sg3_utils-libs are displayed.

3. If sg3_utils and sg3_utils-libs are not installed, locate the rpm in the ISO of the Linux installer or download the binaries and install them on the host.

Note: You can run the rpm -qa > Lists command to find all rpm packages that are installed on the host.

Configure the virtual host

How to run the script

1. Copy the Configure_VirtualHost.sh script to the source virtual machine and to the target virtual machine of the SAP instance.

The script can be downloaded from https://support.emc.com/products/28468_ESI-for-SAP-LVM

2. Grant execute permission to the script:

chmod 755 Configure_VirtualHost.sh

3. Run the following script:

./Configure_VirtualHost.sh

4. Accept all of the default values:

• Enter ESXi IP address on which Virtual machine resides.

• Enable SSH on the ESXi server on which the virtual machine resides.

• ESXi Username which has the administrative permission and password.

Functionalities of the script

The script can be used for the following three functionalities:

◆ Adding an ESXi entry to the Solutions Enabler (SE) database.

◆ Deleting the ESXi entry that was previously added to the SE database.

◆ Listing all of the ESXi details in the SE database.

Add an ESXi entry to the SE database

Solution Enabler (SE) needs details about the ESXi host to get the underlying storage array information. The ConfigureVirtualHost.sh script helps SE to get this information by updating the ESXi IP address, username , and password in the SE database. The script runs the following commands:

Enabling the disk UUID in a VMware virtual environment 27

Page 28: EMC Storage Integrator for SAP NetWeaver LVM: EHAC Administrator … · 2020-03-12 · 12 EMC Storage Integrator for SAP NetWeaver LVM: EMC High Level Storage Administration Console

Installing and configuring virtual hosts

Command : symcfg auth add -vmware -host <IP_Address> -username <UserName> -password <Password> -vmport 5988 -namespace vmware/esxv2

1. To enable secure communication between ESX server and Solution Enabler , SE needs ESX server certificates for HTTPS communication:

• The ESXi certificate is available on the ESXi server at /etc/vmware/ssl.

• The ESXi certificate file name is rui.crt.

2. Copy the virtual machine certificate to the following location:

/var/symapi/config/viclient_cert.pem

3. Run the discover command for SE to connect to the ESXi server and get details of the underlying storage array:

symcfg discover -all ( VNX & VMAX)

Useful commands

You can run the following commands to do the following:

◆ To check which ESXi server is currently configured:

symcfg auth list -vmware

◆ To remove the entry of the ESXi server where the virtual machine is no longer running:

symcfg auth delete -host <IP Address> -user -namspace vmware/esxv2 -vmware

◆ To add a new ESXi server entry where the virtual machine is now running:

symcfg auth add -vmware -host <IP_Address> -username <UserName> -password <Password> -vmport 5988 -namespace vmware/esxv2

Notes: ◆ The Configure_VirtualHost.sh script must be run on every SAP virtual machine to be

used with EMC ESI 2.1.

◆ This script adds an entry for the ESXi server where it is currently running in the symcfg database of the virtual machine. If the virtual machine is moved by vMotion or restarted by vSphere HA to another ESXi server, the entry must be removed and a new one added with the new ESXi server where the VM is running now.

Managing User Accounts

Securing user dataEHAC safeguards sensitive information by requiring WBEM server passwords and control station passwords for Network Attached Storage (NAS) arrays. However, to further reduce the risk of attacks, do the following:

◆ Close your browser when the administration console is not in use to prevent access by unauthorized users.

◆ Lock the server if you leave it unattended. Secure the EHAC server in the same way as any other server with sensitive information.

◆ Set up a strong password when you log in to EHAC for the first time. This password must be used each time you log in to EHAC.

Troubleshooting

Manually cleaning up VMAX storage after a failed clone, copy, or machine refresh

Use the following procedure to manually clean-up VMAX storage after a clone, copy, or refresh operation fails in the post-process clone volumes step when you select Full Clones.

Figure 43 Failed system clone in SAP Landscape Virtualization Management

To manually clean-up VMAX storage:

1. Create the cleanup_clone.sh script as follows:

ecc-db-tgt:/usr/scripts # cat cleanup_clone.sh/opt/emc/SYMCLI/bin/symclone -f pair -sid 6351 query/opt/emc/SYMCLI/bin/symclone -f pair -sid 6351 terminate -nop

Unable to create an admin user.

Ensure that latest derby.jar file was used in the deployment utility. Download the latest file if an older one was used in the deployment utility.

After creating an offline cloned target system, the system becomes isolated from outgoing network connectivity. Without connectivity, HBAs cannot be updated with the current ESXi HBAs from the online target virtual machine.

Before performing a SAP NW LVM System Clone process, review the isolation configuration for the SAP source system to maintain all of the communication from the source and target virtual machines with the ESXi servers. Also review the SAP NetWeaver LVM host configuration of the SAP source and target systems involved in the cloning process, to guarantee the HBAs and network can be accessed without limitations. If a target SAP system is isolated by SAP NetWeaver LVM, then it cannot access the ESXi server and will not be able to retrieve the configured HBAs and will fail in the unprepare and prepare processes.

Issue 443878: The system destroy failed due to storage hanging locks.

Verify with the storage administration team that the locks are cleared and restart the system.

Troubleshooting

Using logs to monitor the systemESI uses logs to monitor the operation of the system. This enables system administrators and EMC support engineers to troubleshoot issues that users may encounter.

While configuring and deploying EHAC, you can also configure logging to monitor the operation of the system. Because no logs can be kept on the SAP NetWeaver LVM servers, both EHAC and the ESI NetWeaver LVM adapter store logs on the EHAC server using the same logging facility.

The following information is collected:

◆ Java Thread Dump Collector logs

◆ JBOSS and EHAC Web Service logs

◆ EMC SMI-S Provider logs

In case of error, review the logs in the log folder specified while configuring EHAC. If users encounter issues, the storage administrator can retrieve the logs from EHAC server to which the user may not have access.

Note: From the EHAC Configuration Utility, you can click Collect Logs to create a Zip file that contains logs that are generated by ESI. EMC support may request these logs to troubleshoot issues.“Configuring logging” on page 31 provides details.

Collect logs

To collect log files:

1. From the Administrator tab on the right side of the page, select Collect All Logs.

2. Open or save the ESI_LOGS.zip file.
