3,663,738 patients treated: a number that sums up EMERGENCYs rst 15 years o work.

But this number alone is not enough to dene our activity: it is also necessary to explain where

    - in teen dierent countries, all ravaged by war and poverty - and how we treated thesepeople, with passion and proessionalism, building and managing Hospitals, Surgical Centres

and Paediatric Centres, First Aid Posts, Rehabilitation Centres

Why we treated them, however, needs no explanations: simply, these people needed to be

treated. The meaning o our doctors and nurses work around the globe is all here: to treat

those who suer, without distinctions o ethnicity, ideology, gender, belies, religion.

In March 2009 we opened a new Paediatric Centre in the capital city o the Central Arican

Republic, Bangui: it has already given ree healthcare to 15,306 children.Weve worked long and hard toward the building o the Arican Network o Medical Excellence

(ANME). It is an ambitious project aimed at ostering cooperation between dierent countries

in the continent, toward the building o healthcare acilities o a very high standard ollowing

the model o the Salam Centre or Cardiac Surgery in Khartoum, Sudan: like the Salam Centre,

all these acilities will have a regional vocation. Paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology,

oncology, traumatology are only a ew o the medical elds covered by this project,

which is meaningul above and beyond its clinical importance.

We believe that being able to have representatives o dierent countries - sometimes in open

confict with one another - sitting at the same table, working on a common goal which is

the health o the populations, is a beautiul result, rom a cultural and social point o view.

New projects will begin in the rst ew months o 2010, like the Paediatric Centre in Nyala,

South Darur. And our engagement in Italy is growing, as well: building upon the positive

experience o the Clinic in Palermo, we are working to open other healthcare acilities

dedicated to the migrant population and to those in need.

As always, all o this is possible only through the support o thousands o volunteersand riends like you: dont hold it back.

In 1999, EMERGENCY transormed a ormer military

compound in the village o Anabah, Panshir Valley,

into a Surgical Centre for War Victims.

In order to meet the needs o the local population,

the Centre progressively expanded its activitiesto include emergency surgery and trauma care.

In 2003, Paediatric and Internal Medicine units

were opened within the same compound.

A Maternity Centre was opened in June 2003

to provide assistance to women and inants in an area

o the country that registers one o the worlds highest

mortality rates or both children and mothers.

To oer support to the women in the most remote

villages, eld consultations in obstetrics and neonatal

    care were established.

In the Spring o 2001, EMERGENCY opened a second

Surgical Centre for War Victims in Kabul.

In 2003, an Intensive Care Unit with 6 beds was added.

In September 2004, EMERGENCY opened a third

Surgical Centre for War Victims in Lashkar-gah,

the regional capital o Helmand Province, in the South

Italian writer Tiziano Terzani, is the only one to oer high

quality, ree o charge healthcare in a war ravaged area.

In all the Aghan regions polluted with landminesand lacking healthcare acilities, EMERGENCY has

established a network oFirst Aid Posts (FAPs)

and Health Centres, open 24/7, connected to its main

hospitals by an ambulance service to reer the most

    urgent cases.

Since 2001 EMERGENCY has been running a Prisons

Clinic Programme to ensure medical assistance

to the inmates o the largest prisons in the country.

In 2006, EMERGENCY activated a programme o eldscreening and treatment o Ophtalmic Diseases.

In 2009 only, 1,168 patients were attended at the Anabah

Centre and in the surrounding FAPs.

In 1998, EMERGENCY opened a Surgical Centre

in Battambang, in the North o the country,

to guarantee surgical assistance and rehabilitation

to war and landmines victims. The Centre is dedicated

to the Italian journalist Ilaria Alpi, killed in Somalia in 1994.

Through the years, the activities o the Centre have been

expanded to include plastic and reconstructive surgery

or the correction o congenital malormations

    and the eects o polio.

Since 2005, in agreement with the Ministry o Health,

the Centres activities have been extended to emergency

surgery and traumatology, thus making EMERGENCYs

hospital the main reerral centre or trauma care

in the entire province. In 2006, the new physiotherapy ward or the

rehabilitation o the hospitalised patients was

    inaugurated.

The international sta is involved in the proessional

training o the local personnel, including workshops

or physiotherapists, nurses and surgeons currently

in residence at Phnom Penh University.

In order to provide emergency assistance to landmine

victims, in 1999 EMEGENCY activated 4 First Aid Posts

in the densely-mined district o Samlot, and alongthe routes trodden by the reugees returning home

rom Thailand. A th FAP was opened in January 2000

in Tasanh, eaturing an in-patient ward or the treatment

o malaria, which is endemic in this area o the country.

In 2003, the operation o 4 o the FAPs was transerred

to the local authorities. In July 2009, the FAP o OTatiak,

in Samlot province, was also entrusted to the local

    government.

In 2007, EMERGENCY activated a programme

decided to entrust the management and running

o the two Surgical Centres and o the network o 22

First Aid Posts connected to them to the local Ministry

o Health. In nine years, the EMERGENCY Centres in Erbiland Sulaimaniya, and the FAP network, treated over

    330,000 people.

In 1998, EMERGENCY opened in Sulaimaniya

a Rehabilitation and Social Reintegration Centre

or amputees and other patients with motor disability.

The Centre eatures a rehabilitation ward,

and workshops or the production o prostheses

training and vocational workshops, and nancially

supports them in establishing small businesscooperatives to support their amilies.

Since 2008, EMERGENCY organises in Sulaimaniya
