From the Retirees President

Dear UCSB Retirees,

We hope you had an enjoyable summer and took a nice trip somewhere. On Aug. 30th, 28 of our Retirees carpooled to Vandenberg Air Force Base for a personal tour on a bus. What an adventure to see things the public does not see. We had a very accom-modating tour guide who made our trip even more enjoyable.

The third Wednesday of months September through May, we meet at 9 a.m. at Cody’s Café, Turnpike and Hollister for a no-host breakfast and interesting presentation. Our speaker for Sept. 20th was Tom Kronen, who spoke about reverse mortgages. Thank you Claudia Alphin for arranging this interesting topic.

We have a new UCSB Health Care Facilitator, Rebecca Preza. She will be our speaker on Wednesday, Oct. 18th to give us the latest information on our Health Benefits. The room at Cody’s fills up fast; those who will be ordering breakfast will be seated at the tables, others may have to stand. For additional Open Enrollment workshops see page 2 of the newsletter.

Ms. Ellin Ostler has been invited to come speak on Nov 15th at Cody’s Café, to show us how to prepare a binder with our own medical information for family use in an emer-gency. You will want to hear more on this topic. RETIREES PRESIDENT Continued on page 7

Colleagues,

Another school year has begun, and our fall Kickoff social event will be held October 19th at 3:30PM in Mosher Alumni House. Our speakers, Professors Sarah Anderson, Max Moritz & Andrew Plantinga of the Bren School of Environmental Science give their presentation: “Playing With Fire,” and will talk some about recent local fires. As I write this the Whittier fire has not been declared OUT. See page 5 for event details.

As you know the Association has always supported undergrad research and in the past has awarded prizes for the UCSB Undergraduate Research Colloquium poster competition. In order to influence a greater number of undergrad researchers we will be supporting such research with mini grants to undergrads so they can begin the work at the beginning of the new academic year. We will continue to support the Emeriti Prize, this year to a student for an outstanding Slam presentation before judges. Future emails will name the time and place for these oral presentations, usually held in May. Your contributions to undergrad research is greatly appreciated. See page 6 to see more about the Slam competition.

Later in October, your Emeriti Association representative will attend the Council of University of California Emeriti Associations (CUCEA, http://cucea.ucsd.edu/) twice-annual conference hosted by UC San Francisco. This is an opportunity for exchange of ideas among all emeriti associations on every campus, and to insure that UC retired

CMS Reveals New Medicare Card Design Removing Social Security numbers strengthens fraud protec-

tions for about 58 million Americans

Today, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS)

gave the public its first look at the newly designed Medicare

card. The new Medicare card contains a unique, randomly-

assigned number that replaces the current Social Security-

based number.

CMS will begin mailing the new cards to people with Medicare benefits in April 2018 to meet the stat-

utory deadline for replacing all existing Medicare cards by April 2019. Handbooks are being mailed and

will arrive throughout September. The goal of the initiative to remove Social Security numbers from

Medicare cards is to help prevent fraud, combat identify theft, and safeguard taxpayer dollars.

People with Medicare will receive a new Medicare card in the mail, and will be instructed to safely and

securely destroy their current Medicare card and keep their new Medicare number confidential. Issu-

ance of the new number will not change benefits that people with Medicare receive.

For more information, please visit: www.cms.gov/newcard. To see full article: https://www.cms.gov/Newsroom/MediaReleaseDatabase/Press-releases/2017-Press-releases-items/2017-09-14.html

Research Initiative Seeks Innovation

Through Collaboration

Wildfires have been increas-ing in the western U.S. and elsewhere, a trend that is expected to continue with climate change. While fire plays a vital role in main-taining the health of many ecosystems, it can also be a destructive force that puts human communities at risk.

Fire-management challenges lie in addressing the threat to human well-being posed by fires, particu-larly at the wildland-urban interface; the uncertain-ties associated with various fire-related land-

management practices, such as thinning and controlled burns; and the complicating factor of climate change.

Changes to UCnet/At Your Service Online

UC HR Benefits Information Systems has made a few changes to the At Your Service (AYSO) Main Menu (https://atyourserviceonline.ucop.edu/ayso/) in response to feedback received at a recent retiree focus group discussing technology usage. The changes went into effect September 26th.

1. UCRP Benefit Income applications have been moved from “Retirement & Savings” to the “Income & Taxes” section, as shown in the screenshots below.

2. A link has been added under “Stay Connected”: “Retiree/Emeriti Associations and Centers” http://ucnet.universityofcalifornia.edu/retirees/associations.html

3. A link to the Social Security Administration has been added under the “Retirement & Savings” section.

UCSB EMERITI ASSOCIATION UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH AWARDS

This year the Emeriti Association allocated prize money to the undergraduate Slam competition, with the final judging held on May 16, 2017. The College of Letters & Science and the UCSB Emeriti board have created a special award, the “Emeriti Award.” This years award winner—Alexander Smolentsev—was awarded the $1,000 prize for his presentation “Curing Diabetic Retinopathy with the help of the Nile Rat Biopsychology.”

The Emeriti Association participation included judging the competition. Our appreciation goes to Emeritus Professor Robert Warner and Emerita Professor Merith Cosden for their work with the first round judging, and Emeritus Professor William Prothero who was on the final round judging panel. Thank you, too, to our Emeriti Association members for their donations; without their generosity it wouldn’t be possible for the Association to contribute to this competition.

Soluble & Insoluble Fiber: What Is The Difference? Dietary fiber, the indigestible part of plant ma-terial, is made up of two main types. Soluble fiber easily dissolves in water and is broken down into a gel-like substance in the part of the gut known as the colon. Insoluble fiber does not dissolve in water and is left intact as food moves through the gastrointestinal tract.
