Here’s the surest way to build a Savings Account . . . make it “planned savings.” Save every dollar you can spare from your weekly earnings and do it every week. The sure way ia to saive a small amount regularly. I t’s fa r better than merely to hope to save larger amounts “someday.” Just multiply one dollar by 385 and see how it grows and grows. And at the Equity your dollar* grow faster w ith our top per annum dividend, paid four times a year.

instead of dw m e n whleh t« m sbtnp New Jersey the laughing stock of the country, the state could ba moving swiftly toward stabilizing an unwieldy, inequitable tax structure for the benefit of all.

The big defect in Governor Hughes’ tax program U the fact that it was designed to do nothing more than to put another patch on an already patched up tag program. It waa not reforming the program from the top or the bottor*.

If the tax program were definitely eliminating one of th* numerous bad taxes *uf- fered by New Jersey it would have received greater suppoH-

Ttie most onerous taa in Naw J****y 4* that imposed by the freeholders. There is no reason whv the cost of the county gov-1 ernment should not be absorbed by the state, leaving the municipality free to pay fo r its own government, including the schools. ,

In the la tte r days of the tax campaign Hughes tried to point out that the new income tax would provide certain relief for the municipalities. But that would be merely fo r or.e year. There was no guarantee relief would be extended.

The big need in New Jersey U for tax reform from top to bottom.

New York is having a spate of trouble with the New York Stock Exchange. The Stock Exckange threatens to move. Prom ptly 40 communities, ranging all the way to Arkansa*, snapping and barking like puppies for a bone, urge the Stpck Exchange to run away from New York and settle with them.

The sovereign S tate of New Jersey occupies ita daya leering covetously upon South Bergen meadowUnd that fqr hundreds of years has belonged to the municipalities in which it is located. Now the State of New Jersey cUims the land and ruthlessly is setting about steaHng i t in broad daylight. Not on any moral ground*, mind vou, but on some legalistic rhenani- gan* th a t greedv law yers have concocted.

Teterboro has been a tax haven for many years. Some of our top industrial firms have hidden awav there, reaping such benefits as there are fo r their stockholders. Now surrounding municipalities, scrapping like puppies for bits of Teterboro’* wealth, are trying to seiie parts of it. The equities are not involved—m erely the pame of getting as much as possible while the getting is good.

In Ridgefield Public Service Gas & Electric Co. has built a h u g e plant. Tbe tay«*s pour in to Ridgefield's pockcts. Municipalities surrounding Ridgefield are barking and

snapping and trying to get their snout* into the tax pot. Not becau*e of the equitie* of the situation—but because they see an opportunity to get a bit of what seems to be a good thing.

W hat k ind 'of government is this?W hat kind of example* are being sat for

the young? How does th is avid, animal-like hunt for

the small print in the contract set with the sense of m orality we try to instil in children?

If public officials are willing to bit*, scratch and kick what are private businessmen doing?

There is reason to be thoroughly ashamed of our public officiaU. To hover over a stricken city such as New York Uke vultures, waiting for an opportunity to leap in and tear a t the carcass is a revolting picture. _____

To try to use legalistic reasoning to de- fraud municipalities of w hat has rightfullv been theirs for centuries is a stigm a that no state can ever erase.

To seek to tear away at the tax treasury of a community without regard to the equities of the situation is b raien burglary.

It all boils down to one question: if you can't trust government what can one tru st?

Please, Freeholders!E ither our Board of Freeholders take

leave of their sense upon assuming office— o r they think the taxpayers have.

Not long ago the Republicans were in charge of the store in Hackensack. And they prated endlessly about the fact the county ra te was being held steady.

The municipalities shrieked with angufsh every tim e they w ere slabbed by tbe new dem ands of the freeholders. Irt South Bergen th is year the couty tax bite increase is w ell over $200,000.Y et, Freeholder D irector D. Bennett Mazur, a Dem ocrat, said : “W e have decided that th e tax burden is already sufficient, and have adm ittedly tailored this budget to hold the tax ra te line.”

And, piously adds the public relations m an fo r the county, “ It is expected that when th e tax ra te is finally determined

sometime in May it will show a slight decrease.”

W hat kind of nonsense is this? The tax ra te is determined by budget over

ratables. If the Bergen County Tax Board inflates the ratables the tax ra te is going to stand or come down. T hat is w hat has happened in the p a s t ' under Republicans. I t is hanpening under Democrats. The tax ra te will remain static, even drop. But the bite on the taxpayer is bigger every year, as it is this year.

In Long Island A sheriff gained fame because he ran for office on the pledge he would abolish his useless office if elected

tn New Jersey the freeholders became ureless appendages of the government vears ago. What politician wants to become fam ous by seeking office to abolish the office?

They Who BuildA Lyndhurst builder named Nicholas

p«mi»ini died recently a t the age of 76. Not too m any years ago Nick was busily putting up homes in the South Bergen area.

Nick Dam ieni never became a t'evelon- m ent builder. P a r t of the profit he received from building w as in the joy of accomplish-

ck was a custom builder. He cher- , craft. A job worth doing for him

i w orth .doing well.nent standards Nick never be

came a rich man so far as esta te taxes go. But he died a happy man, one who had the sense of having made something good, something tha t would last through the ages.

A member of his family summed it up in a little note to The Leader, saying, “His motto was always quality first. In this he took great pride. His many friends knew him by that outstanding characteristic.”

To leave behind a family so proud is a chievement of high order in itself.

More and m ore m achines aippliances, gadgets, autom obiles, ga rag e doors to be opened by a push button which you can activate while sitting in the car, and all kinds of instrum ents a re reaching t h c m arket with increasing volo- city. All thc*e things a re designed to m ake our lives easier, which no doubt they do, as long as they work. The easy life begins to become Ufteasy if there is a Break down, because it becomes more and m ore difficult lo find an experienced mechanic to restore our m achines to work.

The need for m echanics becam e desperate last year with the virtual explosion of Ihe demand for color TV sets. Most people have no idea of the set.

Someanics who tried to repair tiieivl1 own color set, found this out The very least it takes to rep a ir a color set is a variety of instrum ents. A g o o d eq)pr generator costs about $250. In addition several o ther instm-l m eats a re needed, which together cost a t least $1,000 - Ju s t as im portant as having these Instrum ents is to know how to use thfem, which in turn requires a g reat deal of experience.

We had a call from onecustom er who w anted her set repaired. Since the set was not purchased from us, we could not repair it, because we only service w hat we soli. She told us that the set was bought from a downtown st re with "facto ry" service! S h e had 9 “service” men in 2 months, and the trouble wa still the sam e. These men were not servicem en a t allthey w ere tube pullers. Thi-is the expression used in the trade for an inexperienced mechanic.

It is well enough known tha' it lakes years for a mechanic to gain the experience need ed to repair today 's complicated electronic aonaratus Our technicians have 12 years of IWs precious experie-'ie- servicing color TV sets. Most “ factory” service organizations which of course have nothing t< do with the factories, a r , “ green” and ihe customers ar guinea pigs. This is an unfortit nate fact.

Help perpetuate the freedom those early immigrants found in America. Buy U.S. Savings Bonds from your bank, or on the Payroll Savings Plan where you work.
