President’s Message…. As this school year comes to a close it is bittersweet, for this has been another record-breaking year for the band at South High. This year the band has grown in many different ways, from establishing an international presence, to drumming its way to number three in the state. We are very lucky to be a part of such a great group of outstanding student musicians and supportive parents. “Thank you” to all the parents who put in countless hours to support the band program at South. Without your participation, our program would be impossible. We’d especially like to thank all of those senior parents who have been participating throughout last four years -- chaperoning, making sandwiches, loading trucks, with a special acknowledgment to those senior parents who held committee or leadership positions: Jan Pribble, Paula Stukas, Rebecca Bond, Michelle Seifert, Sandra Gutierrez, Will Harada, Jonathan Hirakawa, Helen and Scott Woodring, Marie Buchanan, and I sincerely hope we didn’t leave anyone out! While we are sad to see our seniors leave, we are extremely proud of the great leadership they have demonstrated, as well as their musical talents during the last four years. As they move into adulthood, going in many different directions, we wish them all the best. They have left some big shoes for the underclassmen to fill. We are counting on seeing all the seniors at Homecoming and other band events next year! We are equally excited to welcome new band members joining us from Calle Mayor and Richardson, as well as private schools and even out of state. These new musicians will be a great part of our band. So a big “Welcome to the Spartan Band”! Our first fundraising event will be a Golf Tournament on August 15, 2007 at Los Verdes Country Club. See flier inside for more details. We need to spread the word and make this a success for all. Last year we raised $9,000 to offset our costs and we are determined to do the same this year. This event is great fun — even if you don’t golf. We hope to see you out there soaking up the sun with us. Let’s keep the sound of music echoing throughout the South Bay by joining summer rehearsals, beginning on June 26th at South High. A modified summer school schedule has been given to students, with rehearsal times Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday from 6-9 p.m. And don’t forget Band Camp is MANDATORY, beginning August 13th. JAZZ BAND CORNER

Written June 3, 2007

Jazz Band News…..

April was a busy month! The trip to England & Scotland brought many smiles & memories to your Band members. An experience they will not soon forget; Auditions went very well. We had a great turnout of new incoming Freshmen and current South students. Great to see so many musicians wanting to be a part of the band program; Two last minute invitations found the band playing at the Ken Miller Center for the TUSD’s High Schools Art Show and South’s 1st Fundraiser Night — Darfur in the Dark. Such is the life of a great band and director to say yes to those in need, thanks guys, you make South and the program proud!

May testing put a hold on performing. Thank you to all of the families who attended the Band Banquet. It was an emotional and heartfelt evening. CONGRATULATIONS to Chris Misagal, Miyuki Tanabe and Brandon Whipkey for being selected as this years VIRCO Manufacturing Scholarship Recipients. Thank you to all of our Seniors for their beautiful music and friendships they have given us through their stay at South.

The first weekend in June saw the A & B Bands and Combo A at the Santa Barbara Jazz Festival. After a long 14 hour Sat., both the A & B bands came in 5th, it was “B” bands’ 1st festival; and Combo A came in 2nd in each of their categories’. Outstanding Solo Performance certificates were given to Marc Zollinger — guitar. Mike Wilcox — piano & John German — trumpet; Sunday took the “A” band to the PV. Music & Craft Fair. The band was fantastic and thanks to Guitar Center for their invite!

As this season comes to a close, I would like to thank all of our Jazz volunteers and parents for always supporting your musicians, the band program and your flexibility with the Jazz Bands schedule. Our 2007 — 2008 season promises to be full of engagements, festivals, “Sweet” Jazz Night, trips and the BEST Jazz music in the South Bay! DON’T FORGET to always attend the

Booster Meetings for changing information and with our group, that is weekly….Thanks again, Janet

As always, if you have any questions on any of the above events, please contact, Janet Hubert your Jazz Band V.P./Mgr.

Musical Magic Under The Stars

In July 11, 1922, with the audience seated on simple wooden benches placed on the natural hillsides of Bolton Canyon, conductor Alfred Hertz and the Los Angeles Philharmonicinaugurated the first season of music under the stars at the Hollywood Bowl. While much has changed in the ensuing years, the tradition of presenting the world's greatest musicians and striving for musical excellence has remained a constant goal of this famed Los

Angeles cultural landmark.

One of the largest natural amphitheaters in the world, with a current seating capacity of just under 18,000, the Hollywood Bowl has been the summer home of the Los Angeles Philharmonic since its official opening in 1922, and, in 1991 gave its name to a resident ensemble that has filled a special niche in the musical life of Southern California, the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra.

In spite of wars, depression on a national scale, financial stress, and internal dissension, the Bowl's summer music festivals have gone on, becoming as much a part of a Southern California summer as beaches and barbecues, the Dodgers and Disneyland. Thanks to the area's magnificent climate, only a handful of concerts during the Bowl's history have had to be postponed due to rain. The Bowl grounds themselves -- one of Los Angeles County's most renowned parks -- are open year-round for visitors to enjoy free of charge.

For the latest information about acoustics and architecture, read the Bowl Shell Project page.

Legendary Performers

Of course, it is the incomparable performances that have truly made the Hollywood Bowl's history unique. Legendary artists have appeared at the Bowl throughout the years: Sinatra ... Pavarotti ... Streisand ... Stravinsky ... Heifetz. So have F.D.R., The Beatles, Mickey Rooney, and Edward G. Robinson, as well as such renowned "teams" as Fonteyn and Nureyev, Nelson Eddy and Jeanette MacDonald, Simon and Garfunkel, and Abbott and Costello. Baryshnikov has danced there, as has

Fred Astaire. Garth Brooks, Nat "King" Cole, Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Elton John, Al Jolson, and Judy Garland have headlined star-studded shows at the Bowl, but the all-time attendance record of 26,410 paid admissions was set on August 7, 1936, for a performance by the diminutive French opera star, Lily Pons.

World-Renowned Musicians

As the site of a classical music festival, the Bowl has provided a showcase for the world's greatest musicians. Bernstein, Walter, Monteux, Koussevitzky, Stokowski, Karajan, Klemperer(pictured at right), and Leinsdorf, as well as Mehta,Giulini, Rattle, and Salonen are just a few of the renowned conductors who have led the Los Angeles Philharmonic in summertime concerts over the past seven decades. Itzhak Perlman, Gregor Piatigorsky, Artur Rubinstein, Alfred Brendel, Vladimir Horowitz, Jessye Norman, Plácido Domingo, Beverly Sills, Isaac Stern -- and other distinguished vocal and instrumental soloists too numerous to mention -- have graced the stage for Philharmonic concerts. But never during its long and illustrious history has the Bowl's programming been limited solely to symphonic events; fully staged operas were a regular part of the season in the early years, and the famed Bolshoi Ballet appeared during the 1950s.

Did You Know?

• In 1941 Vladimir Horowtiz made his Bowl debut, performing also for the first time in an outdoor concert.

• In the 1949 Chuck Jones' classic cartoon, Long-Haired Hare, Bugs Bunny appears in a white wig and tuxedo as Leopold Stokowski, takes the Bowl podium, conducts with elaborate hand movements, and holds out a note so long that tenor "Giovanni Jones" causes the shell to crack and come crashing down altogether.

• The fountain statues which grace the Highland entrance of the Hollywood Bowl were designed by Oscar-statuette sculptor, George Stanley in 1938. The three figures are the Muses of Music, Drama, and Dance.

• The Bowl podium has been visited by a wide variety of conductors and personalities during its rich history, the likes of which span the gamut from Leonard Bernstein to Big Bird, from Danny Kaye to John Williams, Henry Mancini to Bobby McFerrin.

• Numerous outdoor plays and pageants were performed at the Hollywood Bowl during its early years. A 1926 production of Julius Caesar, made use of the entire canyon, with troops encamped on the hillside behind, along with temples, bridges and aqueducts designed by Lloyd Wright, oldest son of Frank Lloyd Wright.

• From 1953 until replaced by additional boxes in 1972, a reflecting pool and fountain in front of the Bowl stage entertained audiences during intermission with a colorful display of rainbow hues.

• In 1952, at the backing of Dorothy Buffum Chandler, picnics in the boxes and bench areas went from being "not allowed", to encouraged -- even including contests for decorated picnic baskets.

• The Hollywood Bowl has served movie society across the decades as the place to be seen. Among the listed boxholders for the 1928 season were: C. Chaplin (#117), Mr. and Mrs. Cecil B. De Mille (#641), William De Mille (#736), Sid Grauman (#136), Alexander Korda (#113), Robert Z. Leonard (#143), Adolphe Menjoy (#528), Conrad Nagel (#734), and Fay Wray (#861).

• In the film, Olly Olly Oxen Free (1978), Katharine Hepburn, having refused a stunt double, lands a hot-air balloon herself in front of the Hollywood Bowl stage during a performance of the 1812 Overture.
