Yet, here we are.

However it feels, this

can’t really be considered

new. If we grant our-

selves permission to re-

wind (to use an ‘80’s me-

dia term) 23 years we’ll

find this congregation in a

very precarious place. A

new building project was

just requested, and well under way. This is a taxing

feat for any congregation. Then, the unthinkable

happened. Amid the large mortgage taken out for

such a mammoth of a building project the current

pastor, Rev. John Douglas, was called away from

this body after ministering faith-

fully for seven years. Thus, Em-

manuel Lutheran was thrust into

an interim period to find a per-

manent pastor who would be

willing to serve a congregation

with a new massive debt to go

along with a new facility. The

pastor willing to undertake such

a task? Rev. Robert Stevens.

You see, friends, there really is nothing new under

the sun, and as King Solomon continues, what ap-

pears new “has been already in the ages before us.”

Granted, most of us here at Emmanuel today were

not here during that interim period 23 years ago.

Nonetheless, this is nothing new for Emmanuel Lu-

theran, it’s just new for us. The Holy Spirit faithful-

ly guided us during all of our former interim periods

and brought the most outstanding of ministers to this

congregation as a result. Nothing is new in the way

God sees us, or in His faithfulness to us in this time

of transition. We have a hope for a very bright fu-

ture. That’s the view from here,

Rev. Ben Umberger

Message from Pastor Ben

The View

“There is nothing new under the sun. Is there a thing

of which it is said, “See, this is new”? It has

been already in the ages before us (Ecclesiastes 1:9c-

10).”

Intrigue of the Past

After my paternal grandfather passed away it fell to

my family to clean out his very large garage (it was

basically a barn). There were all kinds of neat treas-

ures in it from a magical time that I never had the

privilege of living through—the 70’s. (You laughing

yet? Well, stay tuned, it gets better.) I remember

asking my father, “What was it

like to work with your dad back

here in the garage during the

‘70’s?” I can’t quite recall what

his answer was, but I remember

the answer was both dismissive

of such an absurd question while

also unimpressive in detail.

You see, I had this idea that the

1970’s were this mystical time

where life was simpler and more fulfilling than any-

thing I’d lived through from the mid 1980’s on. My

father’s answer to my question said it all: although it

may have been different, life was full of the very

same that it is filled with today. As King Solomon

says, “there is nothing new under the sun.”

Same Person, Different Clothing

We here at Emmanuel Lutheran are at the beginning

of what appears to be a new, daunting, and lengthy

process of calling another permanent pastor. It ap-

pears so overwhelming and drives so much fear in us

because we’ve had such a rock-solid pastor in Rev.

Stevens for decades. This has barely been a blip on

the radar of this body, much less a fearful reality.

Chemo Cap Ministry

At the June meeting there were

47 head coverings tagged and

ready for distribution at the

Tate Center. Betty Becket

again graciously volunteered

to deliver them.

\We will continue our project as along as we contin-

ue to get such touching “Thank You” notes from the

patients. (Copies of the two we just received last

month are at the end of this article.)

Plans for a Craft Fair in October were discussed. We

will need help so please volunteer as we can not do it

alone.

We will not be meeting in July and August so our

next meeting will be Thursday morning, Sept. 8th.

We all hope everyone has a safe and relaxing sum-

mer.

Women of the NALC

After the open-

ing prayers,

Lydia Kelly pre-

sented the De-

votional Pro-

gram for Fa-

ther’s day. It

was entitled

“My father’s Words” and it made us all remember

our own fathers. The devotions ended with the

Lord’s Prayer.

At the business portion of our meeting Clara Rambo

reported that the Father's Day Carnations were a

huge success and a Big Thank You goes out to all

who participated.

Ethel Lovelace reported that several more Anniver-

sary Cook Books were sold.

Saturday October 21 and 28 were selected by the la-

dies as the dates for the Craft Fall Festival & Fair.

Many Crafters and Volunteers are needed to make

this show a success and to show the Community that

we are still an active Church.

Pastor Ben stopped by our meeting and helped clari-

fy and answer our many questions.

Lydia Kelly once more provided our morning treat.

Thank you, they were all delicious.

Charlotte Tarman will soon be celebrating her birth-

day and we wish all the best for her.

On June 28th, after the early service, the ladies will

be meeting at Friendly’s for breakfast.

There will be no meetings during July and August.

Our next meeting is scheduled for September 11th.

Enjoy summer but keep attending church!

Please email anything you would like to

pes, community events).

Thank you!

Helping Hands Wishing Well

Emmanuel’s Women of the NALC

invite you to participate in saving

pennies for their Wishing Well lo-

cated in the Lobby. We ask that you

bring any extra pennies you may

save during the week. Our goal is to

collect “miles of pennies” which

turns out to be 83,321. Pennies are counted and we

keep you informed in Emmanuel News. All pennies

received are used whenever a special appeal comes

to our attention.

As of June 18, 2017 we are traveling toward our

14th mile with 5,681 pennies.

Thanks to you!

My Day on the Mission Field

The missionary that we have been supporting, Mat-

thew Madik Riak, has stepped down for personal

reasons. We are in the process of identifying a new

missionary to receive our support. In the meanwhile

please continue supporting this important ministry.

Enter names on the chart you wish to remember or

honor and then place your contribution ($2 per date

is suggested, but feel free to give more) in an enve-

lope with your name and envelope number on it, in-

dicating amount enclosed. Mark the envelope: “My

day on the Mission Field” and place it in the of-

fering plate.

The following are remembered or participated in our

program last month. Please help us to fill in the rest

of the days for the year. All the donations go direct-

ly to help our missionary.
