Emmanuel Lutheran Church Annual Meeting Sunday, January 14, 2018
following 10:30 a.m. worship. Meeting to be held during potluck dinner
(meatballs & potatoes will be provided)
Please pray for our churches and attend your church’s annual meeting. The future of our churches depends on its members and all the talents and skills you can offer to spiritually assist our leaders. Pray that the church’s staff and leadership would put God’s desires before their own, trying to do God’s will for their life and ministry. Pray that the leaders of the church’s ministries “might trust the power of God rather than human wisdom.” (1 Cor. 2:5) Pray that the Lord would make peace between each person in the church, breaking down any wall of hostility used to separate them. (Ephesians 2:15). Pray that God, “who gives us patience and encouragement, will help us live in complete harmony with each
other.” (Romans 15:5).
If you have an announcement, please send information to: [email protected] If you know of an engagement, wedding, birth, or baptism, we would love to include the information, along with a picture in an upcoming issue.
Hatlie Jean Paczkowski, daughter of Alexandra & Shawn Paczkowski, was baptized at Galchutt
Lutheran on December 17, 2017. Welcome to our church family, Hatlie!
Christmas Eve candlelight service at Emmanuel (below). Thank you to Mardee Besette and Austin Heyen for providing special music!
Galchutt Sunday School kids, with the help of their moms, made homemade ornaments to hand out to everyone at church during their Christmas program on December 10.
SAVE THE DATE!! June 19-21 at Galchutt Lutheran.
Harmony is defined as “an agreement in feeling or opinion, a pleasing combination of elements in a whole” or “two or more musical notes at the same time in a way that is pleasant or desired.” Either way, it means working together, accomplishing something as a team. Imagine the band trying to play “Go Tell it on the Mountain” but the brass decides to break out in “Jingle Bells.” Or picture the basketball team trying to make a last minute play when one player goes rogue, deciding to do their own thing. In both instances, working together and being on the same page is a must. Our church community is no different. Romans 12:10 says, “Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves… Live in harmony with one another.” If we can do this, we are truly achieving what God intends. Can we live in harmony, work in harmony? Of course we can! We can work together for one common goal. At Galchutt Lutheran our mission statement is, “Galchutt Lutheran Church strives to share the love and grace of Jesus Christ with all people by reaching out to our neighbors and living life together.” Emmanuel’s mission statement is similar, “Emmanuel Lutheran Church of Abercrombie, North Dakota, strives to be a Christ-centered family of faithful believers, led by the Spirit, serving all people in love and gratitude.” We, as congregations, work together to realize this mission. Galchutt and Emmanuel Lutheran Churches have worked together for many, many years. Even while we are two separate buildings with separate activities, separate services, and separate members, we still work together. With a pastor we have a leader that makes working together easier but in this time of transition it is more important than ever we work together in harmony in order to move forward and carry out God’s word. LWR notes for January A special thank you to all who shopped and purchased quilts and wall hangings at the December sale during the Emmanuel Meatball Dinner and fundraiser. Following the event, we made quilt donations to the Fargo Moorhead YWCA and Churches United for the Homeless from the quilts that did not sell. The 2017 total donations in the local area were more than 20 quilts to help warm those in need. At this time we are in particular need of used blankets for batting/filler in our quilts. We have gratefully received fabric donations from individuals in the community that support our sewing and quilting. We are in the process of developing a new plan to complete School Kits and Personal Care Kits in 2018 that will spread out the item collection throughout the year. Watch the next ECHO for further information that will take advantage of sales to gather the needed items. Please consider donating time to the work of LWR as you are able at home or during the quilting sessions at Emmanuel Lutheran. Ellen Rittenhouse
“I appeal to you, brothers and sisters, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another in what you say and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly united in mind and thought.” (1 Corinthians 1:10).
Harmony.... During Advent we learned about community discord during Biblical times, as well as current times. John the Baptist clearly stated that he was not the Messiah and that he came to prepare the way for the one whose sandals he was not worthy to untie. In this community of believers we can also prepare the way by sharing our lives with those in our congregations and the larger community as we did during “Beer and Hymns,” the summer hymn sings, and community work projects. And as we ready ourselves for the coming of a new pastor it will be important to pray for the Spirit to guide us to call and accept the leadership to come. As a member of the call committee, I believe it is important to listen for and seek harmony among our community of believers. Won’t you join me in praying for courage and the Spirit’s guidance to proclaim mercy, justice, and harmony of His kingdom as we seek a new pastor?
Ellen Rittenhouse

38 YEARS AND 30 MILES OF QUILTS By Gary Fields (LWR Pub.)
Gladys Hansen has been the quilting coordinator at Faith Lutheran Church in Valders, Wisconsin, since 1979. Thirty-eight years and 23,865 quilts later, she and her group of nine other quilters are still creating hundreds of the covers annually, all for Lutheran World Relief to deliver to our brothers and sisters in need around the world. Laid end to end, their handiwork would span 30 miles! The group is 10 women strong and they meet on Thursdays from January through November. Her oldest quilter turned 90 earlier this year. Gladys is 87. “We’re an ecumenical group,” she said, explaining they include one Presbyterian, one Roman Catholic and one nonchurch member, along with seven members of Faith. In 2017, the rail car loaded with their shipment pulled out October 24 carrying 515 quilts! Gladys says she expects they will be just as productive, if not more so, in 2018 because they already have a stack of unfinished quilts ready to be completed. “We hold them for next year,” she said. “We have quite a pile waiting there.” While the production team is an enthusiastic group of only 10 women, the supply chain is a wide-ranging, community-wide venture with many people from the congregation and throughout the area donating materials. People tend to be generous when they find out the purpose of the quilts. Gladys believes another simple thing helps: she sends thank you notes to everyone who donates materials, signed by the whole group. “That’s one of the smartest things I did, writing thank you notes. People like being thanked.” And the work is truly a ministry. “We are providing comfort to people we’ve never seen and people we’re never going to see but we know they are God’s creations and he wants those people to have a warm quilt too,” Gladys said. “We don’t need to know them. God created them. That’s enough. We don’t care where they live. If a quilt is going to make them more comfortable, that’s why we do it.”

Happy New Year! This is a great time for new beginnings-a time for fresh starts and renewed energy. It’s a time for forgiving ourselves for what we did not do last year and for what we wish we had done differently and a time to forgive others for what has been done to us. It is only in letting go of past hurts that we can live in harmony with one another. The book of Romans addresses this in Chapters 12 and 14 telling us to live in harmony. God desires that we help one another, lifting each other up. We should strive to live in peace with gentleness and meekness. Harmony in music is a beautiful blending of notes that are pleasing to our ears. It fills us with joy and so it is with our relationships when we blend our gifts and talents to become a better congregation. We are all going through changes in our individual churches. Pray that the Spirit leads the right pastors to our doors so that we can open our hearts and minds to what God might want us to experience. Have a blessed new year. Marsha Hendrickson
During storms, emperor penguins huddle for warmth,
taking turns at the center and on the perimeter of the group. While incubating eggs, up to 6,000 male penguins have been observed clustering for shelter against the harsh Antarctic winter. Partially grown chicks gather in protective “cre ches” (French for “cribs”); often surrounded by a colony of adults, these groupings ward off predators and cold. In stormy times, humans also need supportive groups; we can’t survive alone. A church family allows us to take turns giving and receiving care. Amid social upheaval, injustice, illness, natural disaster and any loss or crisis, God invites us to gather for protection and warmth. In the church community, we support and strengthen one another and are empowered to go out again into the less-sheltered world.
United in diversity Although early Christians had much in common, they also dwelt in diversity. Each of their leaders emphasized certain parts of the gospel and favored certain worship styles. They all believed in the resurrected Jesus, and they all celebrated the Lord's Supper and baptism. But Christians in Corinth had a unique approach, as did those in Ephesus, Philippi, Galatia, Rome and so on. It might be boring if we all believed and practiced completely alike. Variations don’t need to be an impediment to Christian unity. As pastor Charles Best said, “If we’re going to be in heaven together, we might as well get along now.”
