Labor’s always a problem. How many times have you been in a conversation with a farmer or

other business owner and have them say “It’s hard to get good help.” Usually they also add “Seems like nobody wants to really work!” I can imagine Jesus having the same conversation about staffing His kingdom. “The harvest is abundant but laborers are few!” He says. Unfortunately for many years this scripture was used only to preach about the vocations of religious life or priesthood. The scope and the urgency really are much larger! The vocation of each and every Christian is to bring in the harvest of the kingdom of God. And while we do it as married or single, religious sister or brother or monk or nun, the call is nevertheless universal: bring the Good News to the world. Or more simply put—to bring people to Christ. And like the disciples we get restless and weary when our invitations are not eagerly snapped up and so we either move on or quit altogether. (I did my part!) In these summer days let’s renew our commitment to the harvest. The weather’s not always favorable, the yield’s not always what we had planned, but the results are out of this world. Let’s re-commit to being good help, working for the kingdom of God!

THE POWER OF DAILY MASS BY BERT GHEZZI

REFLECTIONS OF DAILY ATTENDEES

“I go primarily because I want to worship Jesus in the way he established as the summit of our faith. Liturgical worship in the Mass is the primary way that I can respond to God with thanksgiving and gratitude for his immeasurable, magnanimous gift of redemption and reconciliation” ~ Mike M.

2019 Baptismal Classes Pastorate baptismal classes will be held on the following dates— w Wednesday, July 31, St. Joseph Elkader 6:30 p.m. w Wednesday, November 20,

St. Mark Conference Room 6:30 p.m. Parents, if you are expecting a child, please plan to attend a baptismal class prior to your child's baptism.

We are pleased to welcome Deb Schloss and Kari Irwin to our Emmaus

Pastorate staff. Deb will serve as half-time pastoral associate in a similar capacity as Sister Carla by visiting the sick and homebound for both St. Mary and Sacred Heart parishes. She will also be the chairperson of the St. Mary Liturgy Committee. Kari will be the new part-time secretary.

Summer Fest Success! Our outreach event last weekend, “SUMMER FEST” in Arlington, was a great day! Approximately 170 people came for

worship and a great lunch served by the NCYC students from the Pastorate. Faith, Food, Fun, and Fellowship were all served up generously! We had great greeters, beautiful flowers and environment, hard workers for set up, and an impeccable cleanup crew. A special impromptu treat was when the music group “invited” the NCYC students to join them up front for the final hymn “Here I Am Lord!” American Idol had nothing on these folks, and they were good sports through it all. HUGE SHOUT OUT to all who helped organize this great event—even the mayor of Arlington was excited about future prospects. This is a definite example of what it means to “BE CHURCH.” Thank you and God bless all who helped and came for worship.

The Emmaus Pastorate Moms Group Join us for Park Day—July 10

at the Edgewood City Park (corner of Union & Franklin Streets).

9:00-10:30 a.m.

New Soles for Young Souls will once again be collecting money to provide at-risk Ed-Co students with new tennis shoes for the upcoming school year. Ed-Co guidance counselors select families to receive gift certificates at registration. Last year, 31 students started the school year with a new pair of tennis shoes from Thompson’s Shoes in Manchester because of the generosity of parishioners of St. Patrick and St. Mark. Money can be placed in the collection basket or in the display in the back of the church until August 4.

Be Sure to Include Regular Weekly Worship in your summer schedule. Our ability to work and to play are all part of the great gifts of God. Plan ahead when travelling to locate a church (www.masstimes.org.).

Be sure to fulfill your liturgical ministry roles at your home parish or find a sub.

Christ never takes a vacation from us, our praise should do the same!

SUMMER STAFFING… Thanks for understanding that staff will be in and out for family and vacation during this time of year, as well as carpet-cleaning and some general maintenance. You might call ahead to the office if you are stopping by for church business, just to make sure. All the bases will still be covered.

SUMMER HOSPITALITY… Please be on the lookout for guests visiting these days. Be sure to seek them out and introduce yourself and get to know them a bit. Evangelization starts with just those little efforts.

YOU might be the only church that someone attends…

Engaged? Are You Starting to Plan Your Wedding? Terr ific! The Church is excited to assist you in preparing for your lifelong commitment! Some quick points to be aware of:

• Marriage preparation usually begins at least six months prior to a desired wedding date.

• No dates are scheduled until the couple meets with the pastor and fills out the necessary documents for marriage.

• If one or both have been in a previous marriage regardless of denomination or marriage by a justice of the peace, a Decree of Nullity (Annulment) will need to be obtained.

The best thing to do is contact the Church as soon as you are engaged so that we can help you right from the start!

Initially, in its early stages, prayer is about focus and concentration on the sacred, on conversations with God, on trying to leave aside, for a time, the things of this world to enter into the realm of the sacred. But

that’s the early stage of prayer. Eventually, as prayer deepens and matures, in the words of John of the Cross, the important things begin to happen under the surface and sitting in chapel with God is not unlike sitting down with someone you sit down with regularly. If you visit someone on a daily basis, you won’t each day have deep, intense conversations; mostly you will talk about everyday things, family concerns, the weather, sports, politics, the latest TV programs, food, and so on—and you’ll find yourself looking at your watch occasionally. It’s the same with our relationship to God. If you pray regularly, daily, you don’t have to agonize about concentrating and keeping the conversation focused on deep, spiritual things. You only have to be there, at ease with a friend. The deep things are happening under the surface.

Father Ronald Rohlheiser, OMI
