Emory H. Markle Intermediate School
Hello Parents and / or Guardians,
I hope all of you are enjoying the cooler and more fall-like weather as we move into October. I am pleased to
share our school year has gotten off to an excellent start! Overall, our students are working very hard and have
acclimated well to the new school year. We have a great group of young early adolescent students at EHMIS!
There are some exciting things happening with our renovation and I wanted to share a few updates on the pro-
ject. Our project began in August and there have already been some significant changes made at EHMIS. This is
the second major renovation to EHMIS as the original building was built in 1971. A renovation and addition was
completed in 1992. The current renovation is anticipated to be a two year project that will be finished in the
summer of 2021. There are a total of nine phases to the project. Listed below is a summary of the first three
phases and some highlights of the transformations you will begin to see in the immediate future at EHMIS:
Phase One: Administration and Counseling Office will be relocated to the area where the library was pre-
viously located. This area will include a more secure vestibule area for check-in. There will be three confer-
ence rooms in addition to an updated nurse’s suite. We anticipate this phase being completed in late De-
cember/January. A new library will be constructed upstairs in the front of the building.
Phase Two: Both upstairs and downstairs’ classrooms (14 total) adjacent to the district parking lot will be
renovated as part of this phase. In addition, district administration offices will be renovated during this
phase of the project.
Phase Three: The majority of phase three will entail renovating the current auditorium at EHMIS. All new
electrical and sounds systems will be updated in addition to new carpeting and ceilings. We anticipate this
phase beginning in February and being completed by June.
Below you will find an architectural rendering of what the front of the building will look like upon completion.
Construction contractors, architects, and our administration team are working together with staff to minimize
disruption during the project. It is important to remain flexible during this time, and to remember construction
is a temporary phase that will result in a beautifully modernized school for EHMIS students!

NEWS FROM OUR LIBRARY
We’ve moved! And we’ve taken all the books with us!! The multi-media center packed up and moved to a new location this summer. Yes, we’ve downsized our space but no
books were left behind. We’ve managed to find a new home for approximately 8,000 vol-umes. We’ve also had lots of visitors to our new digs and everyone knows our new ad-dress. While some activities are temporarily on hold until our new home is built, the kids are still coming in to check out our new and not so new books. The Makerspace items are
still being used even though we really don’t have a designated space for making and the library is once again full during Spark walk as kids use the time to read, finish homework, and challenge each other in games of chess and checkers. We’re looking forward to the
completion of our permanent home but everyone is settling into our temporary space in the back hallway just fine! They say home is where the heart is and our home will always be where our favorite authors and stories live.
