KeepanOPENMIND-someguestsmaynotbeonyour“hotlist”totalkto,butifyouspotaprofessionalwhoisstandingalone,sayhelloandletthemknowhowmuchyouappreciatetheirvisit.Youmightbesurprisedatnot-so-obviousconnectionsthetwoofcanmake.Manyofour“green”guestshaveworkedinmultiplerolesandsettings,andmostofthemwillknowsomeonewhosharesyourinterests,ifyouonlysharewhatthoseinterestsare!
9. Don’tspendallofyourtimetalkingtooneperson.Stretchyourcomfortzoneandaimtomeet3-5people.Keepconversationsbrief-apolitethankyou(orawaveandsmileiftheyaretalkingwithothers)isagoodwaytoexit.
10:Beforeleavingaconversation,it’scustomarytoaskaguestforabusinesscard.Thisstepisveryimportant,becauseitallowsyoutoreachoutaftertheevent-perhapstorequestaone-on-oneconversationinaless-crowdedsettingataslower pace. TIP: It’sgoodetiquettetosenda‘thankyou’afterthisevent,highlightingsomethingmemorableaboutyourconversation.Building relationships is NOT a “one and done” - they take follow up and initiative to work.

Sumayya Allen (13C)isacertifiedpermaculturedesigner,anurbanagriculturalist,andeducatorworkingtodesign,implementandsupportregenerativeagro-ecosystemsinmetro-Atlanta.HavingcompletedherB.S.inEnvironmentalSciencefromEmoryin2013,SumayyacurrentlyservesasCoordinatorforEmory’s Educational Gardens Project,activelyengagingstudentsintheprocessofgrowinghealthysoil,foodandcommunity.ShealsoworksasaPermacultureDesignerwithSustenanceDesignLLC,wheresheappliesecologicalprinciplesintheconsciousdesignoflandscapesonvariousscales–fromresidential,tofarms,toschools,tocityparks.SumayyahasworkedwithvariousproductionfarmsandnonprofitsinAtlanta,includingTrulyLivingWellCenterforNaturalUrbanAgriculture,GlobalGrowersNetwork,GaiaGardensandTheWyldeCenter.

Tina ArnoldisExecutiveDirectorofSustainable Lakewood,anonprofitworkingtorestorethequalityoflifefortheresidentslivinginNPU-Y(acollectionof11neighborhoodsinSoutheastAtlanta).Bytrade,TinaisalsoaprofessionalInteriorDesignerandGreenHomeRestorationSpecialist.“ItwasbecauseofmyneighborsthatIbecameastewardoftheenvironment,”Tinasays,“anditisformyneighborsthatIusemyskillsasafacilitator,ProjectManagementProfessional(PMP),andartisttohelprestoretheareatoavibrantandthrivingneighborhoodwherepeopleareabletoliveinharmonywiththeenvironment.”TinaisaLEED-GAandEarthCraftRenovationSpecialist–specialtiesthatallowhertohelphomeownersandbusinessownerstomakebetterdecisionsaboutsavingenergywhileusingnon-toxicmaterials,reusingexistingfurnishings,andfindingplacestosafelyrecycleusedbuildingmaterials.HelpingresidentstoincorporaterecyclingpracticesintoeverypartoftheirlivesisTina’schallengeandhergoal.
Jenni Asman is Georgia State University’sfirst sustainability coordinator.Originally fromGreenville, SC, JennidiscoveredherpassionforsustainabilityatFurmanUniversity,whereshehelpedcreatethesustainabilityprogram,campusmasterplan,andclimateactionplan.LatershebecameProgramDirectorattheConservationVotersofSouthCarolina,asubsetoftheNationalLeagueofConservationVoters,wheresheledthestate’sGreenSchoolsCaucus,consistingof45senatorsandhousemembersadvocatingformoreenergyefficientschools.Shealsohelpedprocureover$300kinenergysavingsforschoolsthroughgrantwritingandrebates.Jenni’spassionisbehaviormodificationandchangewhenitcomestotheenvironment,andshehasbeenpublishedintwomajorresearchjournals(Sustainability:JournalofRecordandInternationalJournalofSustainabilityinHigherEducation)forherworkincreatingacultureofconservationonuniversitycampuses.

Stephanie Stuckey Benfield is Executive Director of GreenLaw, a public interest law firm dedicated to “giving Georgia’senvironmentitsdayincourt”byprovidingfreelegalrepresentationtoenvironmentalandcommunitygroupsincleanair,water,landuse,andenvironmentaljusticecases.Aftergraduatingfromlawschoolin1992,StephanieservedasapublicdefenderandthenwentintoprivatepracticebeforebeingelectedtotheGeorgiaGeneralAssemblyin1999.SheservedasaStateRepresentativefromtheDecaturareafor14years,duringwhichtimeshewasamemberoftheJudiciaryandNaturalResourcescommittees.In2011,theAtlantaBarAssociationrecognizedStephanieastheOutstandingLawyerinPublicService.SheservesonboardsfortheGreenChamberoftheSouth,EarthShareofGeorgia,andtheOlmstedLinearParksAssociationandisa2013graduateoftheInstituteforGeorgiaEnvironmentalLeadership.StephanieholdsaB.A.inFrenchandalawdegree,cumlaude,fromtheUniversityofGeorgia.
Sara Berney (10C)beganworkinJanuary2014asthefirst-everExecutiveDirectorofWholesome Wave Georgia.Sheispassionateabout increasing access to and affordability of nutritious foods and looks forward to building and strengthening local foodcommunitiesacrossGeorgia.From2013-2014,SaraworkedasaPublicHealthConsultantforDeloitteConsultingLLP,supportingclientsat theCDCandpublichealthnonprofits, includingtheFlourFortification Initiative.Priortothat,SaraservedasaPeaceCorpsVolunteerinPeruwhereshetrainedcommunityhealthpromotersandyouthhealtheducatorsinnutritioneducationandimplementedschoolgardenprogramsinfiveprimaryschools.SaragraduatedfromEmoryUniversityMagnaCumLaudewithaB.A.inAfricanStudiesandSociologyin2010.Asastudent,shewasawardedmultiplegrantstoworkasaHealthEducatorandconductpublichealthresearchinUganda.SarahasbeenaregularvolunteerintheAtlantafoodcommunitysincemovingtoAtlantain2006and is eager to pour her energy and passion into her new role at Wholesome Wave Georgia.
Dr. Michael Black is the Faculty Associate inGeorgia State University’s Sustainability Office where he teaches courses in SustainabilityandNeuroscience.Inthisrole,hehaswrittensuccessfulgrants,helpeddevelopabikeplanandnewsustainabilitycurricula for GSU campus, hosted a Sustainability Forum seminar series, and co-led a Faculty Sustainability in the Curriculumworkshop.GSUawardedMichaelaSparksAwardandthestudentnewspapernamedhimFacultyoftheYearforhissustainabilityeffortsoncampus.HecurrentlyservesasthefacultyadvisorforAtlantaHerpetologyClub,TreeCampusatGSU,andSustainableEnergyTribe(SET),thelargeststudentenvironmentalgrouponGSUcampus.SETwasrecentlyabletopassastudentsustainabilityfeeatGSUwiththehelpofDr.Black,otherenvironmentalorganizationsoncampus,andtheGSUstudentgovernment.Healsoservesas thefoundingboardmemberforOneMoreGeneration,dedicatedtoprotectingendangeredspecies.MichaelholdsadegreeinEcologyfromCornellUniversityandanM.S.andPHDinBiologyfromGSU.
Beth BondisthecuratorofgreenandsustainablebusinessnewsandthedrivingforcebehindSoutheast Green,atrustedonlineresourceforgreenandsustainabilitybusinessnews.AsaSoutherner,shewastiredofhearingabouteverything“green”happeningoutside her native regionwhich iswhat drove her to create thewebsite. Beth spent her formative years inMobile, AlabamaandlatergraduatedwithaB.A.inPoliticalSciencefromFloridaStateUniversitybeforeservinginBouza,NigerasaPeaceCorpsVolunteer.SheisactiveinherneighborhoodandservesonCommunityCouncilforDistrict3,DeKalbCounty.WhennotworkingtobetterhercommunitysheparticipatesinherchurchwheresheservesasCo-ChairfortheCreationCarecommittee.
Allie Brown isRenewableEnergyAssociatewith theSouthern Alliance for Clean Energy (SACE), promoting cleanenergy inAtlanta. She focuses on wind energy throughout the region through research, engagement with diverse stakeholders, policyadvocacy,andimplementationoflocalwindactivities.BeforejoiningSACE,sheservedontheexecutiveboardoftheSierraStudentCoalition:UGABeyondCoal,andwasastudentfellowforGeorgiaYouthforEnvironmentalSolutions.Alliewasalsoengagedincampussustainabilityresearchandin2012,receivedagrantfromUGA’sOfficeofSustainabilitytodesignandoverseestudent-basedresearchtorecommendactionsforreducingenergyconsumptionandincreasingrenewableenergyoncampusby2020.AlliereceivedaB.A.inAnthropologywithaminorinEcologyfromtheUniversityofGeorgiainMay2013.
