October 2018

The costs that allowed the LOTTS Mission Group to gather this important informa on have been covered by an ELCA Share Grant that the LOTTS Mission Group submi ed in spring and a gracious anonymous gi for the remaining balance. Thanks be to God!

Our Stewardship Mission Group has been busy planning our 50 year celebra on (Mission 100), and our Fall Stewardship Campaign, which will begin on Sunday, October 7. Pastor’s sermon that day will focus on the meaning of good stewardship for all that God has given us. 2018 is the 50th anniversary of our Church building and the combined Lutheran Ministries in Moscow. Our celebra on is therefore, named MISSION 100 – celebra ng fi y years, and more importantly, an cipa ng our next 50 years of ministry and mission. MISSION 100 kicked off Saturday, September 8, with a wonderful fun‐filled day of fellowship and celebra on outside Emmanuel Church. The event was a great success and we trust faithfully that the upcoming events to celebrate our congrega on will be equally joyful.

Our sincere thanks to Deb Dumroese, Elaina Perry, and Anne Peterson for taking the lead organizing Mission 100 along with our Stewardship Mission Group and to all who have or do volunteer me, food or assistance with celebra ons. Our stewardship campaign will move through October culmina ng in Miracle Sunday, Reforma on day, on October 28. This will be an exci ng, joyous celebra on of God’s gi s to each of us and how those gi s have been used over 50 years of ministry, and especially how they will be used well into the future. The worship will reflect on Emmanuel’s presence in the building for the past 50 years, there will be a potluck and long me congrega on members will share memories about Emmanuel’s early days. Make sure to mark your calendars for October 28!

from this great book by Dave Daubert. Dr. William O. Avery, from Lutheran Theological Seminary, Ge ysburg, states "With two‐thirds of Protestant congrega ons in need of renewal in mission, Dave Daubert supplies a way for achieving such revival. Wri en in an engaging conversa onal style, his book offers a realis c and prac cal process that can be used in almost any church. Step‐by‐step procedures, centered in a pa ern of Bible study, prayer, and conversa on, present a path to iden fy and apply a faithful vision and core values for the rejuvena on of churches." Join with Pastor Dave on Sundays at 8:30 AM in the Fellowship Hall as he con nues this study focusing on the first four chapters of this great book.

The Mission Endowment Committee is responsible for all Mission Endowment leadership and management activities. Its major objectives are to encourage, accept, acknowledge, invest, and make distributions from the Mission Endowment at the direction and approval of the Council and congregation.

The Committee works with other standing committees, Council, and the congregation to identify, screen, and recommend mission work and projects that may receive funding as directed by the congregation.

On All Saints’ Sunday, the Emmanuel Congregation:

joins together for a Potluck Celebration during Fellowship Hour;

votes on which Mission groups will be awarded financial support, and;

honors a specific person, or persons, who are outstanding in their contributions to Emmanuel’s mission and ministries.

Nomination Forms are due in the church office by Sunday, October 14.

Voting for who gets how much will be on

All Saints’ Sunday, November 4, 2018!

Pastor’s Discretionary Fund

The Pastor’s Discretionary Fund is used by the Pastor to assist individuals and families that are in need. Most often it is used to assist people who stop by the church office and request assistance for basic needs. Community organizations may also refer to Pastor, persons who need assistance. Pastor investigates each case by checking in with the Sheriff’s Office and or Latah County Social Services both of which share a common data base that can spot repeating requests and persons to keep an eye on. These requests to the Pastor’s Discretionary fund may be:

They are homeless and need a place to stay for a night or two. The fund can provide temporary hotel housing for up to 3 nights while other arrangements are being made. Pastor will assist these people in connecting with local resources. Most people may receive housing assistance up to 2 times per year, however circumstances and situations may direct more assistance…especially when there are children involved.

They may need assistance with utilities that are about to be denied. Pastor calls the utility provider and helps to set up a payment plan that incudes an initial payment from the Discretionary Fund.

They are traveling through town and need gasoline or vehicle repairs so they can continue to their destination. Their personal resources are depleted. Pastor assists them in purchasing fuel or finding a mechanic who can repair their vehicle for a reasonable rate.

People need to see a doctor or need medicine. Pastor uses the Moscow Clinic to provide these services. They may need a prescription filled and this is done through Rosauers Pharmacy.

People may need food. They are connected with our local food bank and/or food is given from our ELC kitchen surplus or is purchased by Pastor.

Preschool families sometimes need assistance with, rent, utilities, food, medicine, clothing or tuition.

ELC has the gracious ministry of “loaves and fishes,” assisting people with their most basic needs. This is a very “hands on” ministry through our Pastor.

The Pastor’s Discretionary Fund is in need of your financial support.

Could your support for the Pastor’s Discretionary Fund be above and beyond your usual gracious giving? If you are able to, please give a separate offering ear marked for the Pastor’s Discretionary Fund.

(Our Church Treasurer and our Pastor administrate the Pastor’s Discretionary Fund.)

A Quick Note from

CindyMarie!

Hi Wonderful Emmanuel Friends!

I thought I would fit in a quick note… this month’s newsle er filled up FAST! Lots of great opportuni es happening here!

Just a few things:

Annual Reports are due by Monday, November 5;

Pledge cards will be coming your way the 2nd week of October. If you do not receive one in the mail, that probably means I don’t have your current address. Please contact me if you don’t receive one in the mail by October 11 and we’ll get you taken care of!

With the change of a ernoon preschool hours, my current office hours have changed. I am usually in the office Monday, Wednesday, & Thursday, 7 AM ‐ 3 PM, and Tuesday, 7 AM ‐ 1 PM. (Unless otherwise noted.)

In an effort to use all my awarded vaca on me this year (if I don’t use it, I loose it) it might appear to some that it seems I’m never in the office. This was a funny year because along with regular annual vaca on me, I had a large amount of compensatory hours earned that also needed to be used within the year or I would loose that as well. Be assured, that even though I may not be si ng at my desk at church, I am always available by cell phone to answer your ques ons. Feel free to call or text me at 509.366.0548. If I don’t answer immediately, I will get back with you as soon as I’m able.

Lastly, the staff put together a new Welcome Card! You’ll find it in your Sunday bulle n. This was modeled a er one Pastor Daugs found while visi ng another congrega on this year. Please check it out. If used, this will be a great communica on tool.

Thanks for your me, and for serving with me!

CindyMarie Polley, Church Administrator

Some Ways to Support Our Preschool:

Would you like to be a volunteer reader? We are looking for volunteers who would like to spend about 30‐45 minutes weekly with the kids. Please call Nikki at 208.882.1463 or email at [email protected] for further informa on or to sign up.

When scholarships funds are available, the board typically approves 40% of tui on costs. A student a ending 3 days a week has a tui on charge of $750 per semester, so their scholarship would be $300 per semester, or a total of $600 per year. If you would like to donate to the scholarship fund at any me, these families are very apprecia ve of the support, and many could not a end preschool without this addi onal financial support.

Do you have an old car taking up space in your driveway? We are accep ng dona ons of your used car, pickup, or ATV to raise funds for our preschool kids. Any vehicle you donate, you can donate all or part of its sale. Please contact Steve Fountain, Craig Greenwalt, Pastor Daugs, or the Church Office for more informa on. Thank you for the dona ons we have already received! It has helped pay for our playground, storage shed, and upda ng the quiet room.
