THE CHAPLAIN CORNERRev. Karen Kagiyama, O. Wayne Rollins Director of Pastoral Care

I recently saw the movie A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood about Mr. Fred Rogers, who created and starred in the children’s television series Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood which ran from 1968–2001. The movie tells the story of a journalist whose assignment to interview Mr. Rogers for Esquire invited him into the healing process of learning that feelings are “mentionable and man-ageable.” The movie reminded me of one of the highlights of my childhood. It also reminded me, in this holiday season, that our feelings can often be deeply rooted in our childhood experiences, both the positive and the negative. Mr. Rogers recognized that if children had a way to talk about their feelings and to be reassured that their feelings were valid, then they could learn to manage

them in healthy ways. He did this through imaginative storytelling and play and by telling all of us who were watching that we were unique and special just because we are who we are. It’s a beautiful message of love and acceptance that can help anyone.

As we care for residents and their families, we may encounter deep feelings in them and in ourselves. Caregiving is stressful work, even when it is a job we truly love. The holidays don’t always bring out the best in us. Sometimes things come to a crisis point, tempers flare, and we may feel overwhelmed. Please know that our feelings are “men-tionable.” We can talk about them with each other, with our chaplains, and if needed with a counselor. If they are “mentionable,” Mr. Rogers said, they are “manageable.” Being able to share about our feelings helps us deal with them in a healthy way and heal or move on to something new. Listening is an act of love, and no one did it better than Mr. Rogers. When we listen to each other, we express true caring and compassion. Don’t be afraid to ask for help and to offer help. May this be a season of listening, caring, sharing feelings, and managing all that we are re-sponsible for with compassion and love. Mr. Rogers would be happy for all of us!

AHET Hosts the Starlight Ball!

The SS AHET sailed the night away on December 6th in Atlanta. The crew included Judi Martin, Christine Truitt, Tia Copeland,

Tony Ward, Tocee Harmon, Nancy Long, Corlette Bailey and Angela Gattison. Tia Copeland served the signature cocktail–Oceanic Water. The fearless Captain, Gladys Clay-Butts hosted the event in her lovely red gown. It was a night the residents will not soon forget. Many said they were icing their knees on Monday!

SURPRISE SANTA VISIT!Santa recently made a visit to the WESLEY WOODS Corporate Office. First he stopped down-stairs to visit Emory employees and then he made a second stop upstairs. He reported that all the WESLEY WOODS employees had been “Good” and no one was on the other list!
