"Research is what I'm doing when I don't know what I'm doing.“- Wernher Von Braun

This April Edition of Rodic Newsletter “Employee

Times” comes as “Indian Summer”.

Why is Indian summer called Indian summer?

The most probable origin of the term, in my view, goes

back to the very early settlers in New England. Each year

they would welcome the arrival of a cold wintry weather

in late October when they could leave their stockades

unarmed. But then came a time when it would suddenly

turn warm again, and the Native Americans would decide

to have one more go at the settlers. "Indian summer,"

the settlers called it.

For most people in India this time of the year is

associated with fun as schools break for the holidays and

most offices are not fully active. Summer brings back

lots of outdoor social activities impossible in the freezing

cold winter. Most people visit picnics, beaches and parks

to relax and unwind themselves under clear skies. For

the party rockers, summer time is ‘open season’ so many

parties are held to take advantage of the fine weather,

with clear skies the summer hosts a very bright moon,

ideal for this purpose.

So in this “Summer Edition” let’s talk about Top Five

Holiday Destinations in India.

My collection of places to visit in India in summer gives

you the widest possible choice of places to pleasant and

sun soaked places across Indian subcontinent.

Be it the beachfront luxury at some of the finest south

Asian beaches or the spiritually & mentally uplifting

embrace of Himalayas; be it the yoga & meditation

center where the Beatles embarked on quest for Nirvana

& inspiration or the tea and spices laden Western Ghats.

1) Ladakh: Adventure, Romance & Buddhism

Fondly referred to as the "Little Tibet", This high

altitude cold desert in India is a once in a lifetime

experience.

The mighty Karakorum with its cotton-wool peaks bounds

Ladakh, a terrain characterized by vast barren valleys,

lofty mountain passes, beautiful lakes, and the last

undisturbed home of Tantric Buddhist population.

Ladakh’s arid terrain undergoes drastic weather changes

owing to its elevation.

Every summer motorcyclists from various part of India

and world gather in and around Delhi, Srinagar or Manali

to embark on adventurous trip to Ladakh by road. Manali

- Leh Highway is the favorite among the thrill seekers.

Well the entire landscape of Ladakh is a sight to

behold, the burnished mountainous terrain, sparse

vegetation, snow capped mountains, the emerald

Pangong Tso, Tso Moriri and Tso Kar and Hunder -

also referred to as the desert in the sky - along with

the magnificent monasteries in the sky are what

makes Ladakh so special.

2) Sikkim: Family, Adventure and Honeymoon

Destination.

Bound by the majestic Himalayas with the gushing

Teesta River crisscrossing the entire stretch of the

land, Sikkim in North East India is one of the best

tourist places in India to uncover.

Buddhist Monasteries, cascading waterfalls,

unexplored caves, gushing rapids, Himalayan

trekking trails, high altitude lakes and lush valleys to

be explored that makes Sikkim an ideal destination.

The picturesque valleys laden with over 200 species

of orchids and rhododendron forests and relatively

mild treks into pristine Himalayan ranges and the

stunning Kanchendzonga makes Sikkim alluring as a

popular honeymoon destination in India especially

during Summer.

One of the top places to visit in Sikkim also includes

Tsogmo Lake, a high altitude lake with towering

Himalayas in the backdrop.

The lake remains frozen during winters but one could

still visit it and enjoy hot sip of tea and momos on

the frozen lake. Yet another important lake to visit in

Sikkim is the Gurudongmar Lake.

Don’t miss out on visiting Gurudwara Nanak Lama

Sahib and nearby Buddhist shrine when you visit

Gurudongmar Lake considered one of the holiest site

in Sikkim.

3) Coorg (Kodagu): Honeymoon & Family Vacations

Coorg is one of the most affluent hill stations in

Karnataka offering unequaled luxurious holidays.

Fondly referred to as the 'Scotland of India' and

sometimes as 'Kashmir of the South' due to its

verdant beauty and salubrious weather conditions.

If you are traveling here in April-May, then driving

along the winding roads over hills offers spectacular

vista as you drive past spice and coffee plantations

recently bloomed into fragrant white blossoms.

Located as it is in the Western Ghats, Coorg also

offers trekking opportunities which vary from easy to

moderate, but it’s advisable to take help of local

people ,as they are well versed with the area,Other

activity to let you indulge is golf with 3 golf courses

which are located in Polibetta, Mercara and Coorg

Golf Link in Bittangala

Coorg is best visited throughout the year. Maximum

temperature seldom go beyond 30 degrees even

during peak summer season.

"Research is what I'm doing when I don't know what I'm doing.“- Wernher Von Braun

4) Andaman Islands: Romance & Adventure

Andaman group of Island consists of 52 islands out of

which 36 are inhabited. Apart from the relaxed

tropical ambiance, amazing diversity of corals and

marine life what draws the people to Andaman is

existence of the remnants of Stone Age culture and

the colonial inheritance.

Not long ago before India got independence, the

freedom fighters were kept here in isolation in the

Cellular Jail, now a museum and the place was

notoriously referred to as “Kaala Pani” literally

meaning black waters.

Today this deep green tropical paradise is frequented

by people from around the globe for this archipelago’s

rich and diverse wildlife, snorkeling and scuba diving

opportunities and other water sports.

Another not to miss activity in the Andamans is visit to

Havelock and Corporate Office to Radha Nagar Beach,

one of the rare unspoiled and best beaches in India.

Also voted “the best beach in Asia” by Time magazine

Havelock Island is where the action is. Most of the

snorkeling, diving, Kayaking and scuba diving

opportunities are available only in Havelock Island.

5) Tawang, Arunachal Pradesh: Adventure &

Spirituality

One of the least populated towns in Arunachal

Pradesh, Tawang is one of the most sought –after

destinations in summer in India ideally visited in May

and June before the arrival of Monsoon or after late

September and in October.

Tawang’s popularity as a summer retreat is its

positioning at the altitude of about 10,000 feet above

sea level which accounts for its pleasant weather. This

region is quite famous for the imposing 14th century

Tawang Monastery. It was built at the will of 5th Dalai

Lama ‘Merag Lama Lodre Gyamtso’ and belongs to

Mahayana sect of Buddhism

Another major attraction of Tawang is the Tipi Orchid

Sanctuary which houses thousands of varieties of

orchids. Sela Top Pass, which remains covered with

snow throughout the year, is the major route to get to

Tawang.

Attraction of Tawang: Hot water springs - Pankang

Teng Tso Lake - Sangeshar Lake - Sela Pass - Tawang

Galden Namgyal Lhatse

The most celebrated festival of Tawang is ‘The Losar’,

the famous Tibetan Buddhist festival, which took

place in the months of February/March.

Tawang is a restricted area. Foreign nationals need

inner line permits to visit this hill station and permits

are available from major cities such as Delhi,

Guwahati and Kolkata.

Best time to visit Tawang is from April till October. Be

prepared for incessant rains if you are traveling here

after the arrival of monsoon in India

Technology is transforming the world at a faster pace than ever before. As times have passed, people across

the world have witnessed their life being influenced by technology in all dimensions. Already, people wear

computers on their faces, robots scurry through factories and battlefields and driverless cars dot the highway

that cuts through Silicon Valley.

Some of the business leaders like Peter Thiel, PayPal cofounder;Sebastian Thrun, Google X Founder; Susan

Wojcicki , Head of YouTube; EV Williams, cofounder of Twitter and Blogger; Reid Hoffman, cofounder of

Linkedin have commented on the far-off technology that will be a commonplace in a decade, the role of

technology in reducing income inequality, the business operations that technology will replace, the technology

that will seem antiquated in a decade and the next issue to undergo a sea change in social acceptance.

Reid Hoffman, cofounder of LinkedIn talks about the unique drug that’s printed for you and your condition

based on your individual gene sequencing, one would see people start a new business that create jobs and solve

real problems, computer mouse will be replaced, technology will unbundle banking for loans, payments, asset

management etc.

Sebastian Thrun, Google X Founder visualises about a chip under your fingernail that unlocks all your devices,

technology would replace airline pilots. Marc Andreessen, inventor of Internet browser sees a wave change in

philanthropic contributions that will unfold over the next 10-20 years from Silicon Valley

Susan Wojcicki, Head of Youtube raises an important issue of gender equality in leadership. As women form

only 25% of technology industry, their influence in society might reduce further with the growth of technology.

Also, companies have realised the importance of innovation and are competing through intensive R& D that has

enabled them to deliver high-tech niche future products. Consumer product manufacturers have research wings

that actively engage with practicing as well as student designers to spot emerging trends and preferences to

conjure up plausible visions of the future. Here is a look at some of the interesting gadgets for future that will

change our life for ever :

Transparent TV

The transparent TV designed by Michael Friebe is a

marvellous piece of technology that combines

conventional LCD and the latest TOLED display

technology. This allows to create non-transparent /

solid moving pictures with rich color reproduction and

full contrast range from solid black to pristine white.

Document Extractor – Combi Monitor

Saving space on the desk has always been a problem

for some and to solve this issue Byeong Min Choe has

come up with a marvellous idea of combining a

printer and a monitor.

Unique Electric Bike

Yuji Fujimura's award winning electric bike concept

folds flat in an extremely compact space.

Ichef+oven

The iChef Oven has an innovative and powerful

computer behind its technology. With few simple

steps, one can just sit back and wait for the tasty

meal to be ready.

WAT Lamp

The WAT lamp has the interesting ability to generate

light if you fuel it with water. Yeah, it sounds

outrageously futuristic, but the system is actually not

that strange. The water combines with a

hydroelectric battery to generate an electrochemical reaction that lights it

"Don't let it end like this. Tell them I said something." - last words of Pancho Villa

My Dear Son,

I am writing this letter today on the occasion of your 12th Birthday, with some advisory tips to you but I want

you to open this letter on your 24th Birthday. I may or may not be alive at that time but you will be matured

enough to analyze the contents of my letter, which is relevant to all irrespective of age.

Today, I managed to spare some time, to celebrate your 12th Birthday with you & your Mom, as I have

previously missed some of your Birthdays, due to my busy & hectic schedule, in this materialistic life, for which

I feel sorry. There are a number of reasons for giving vent to my experiences & feelings through this letter, but

mainly just to forewarn & prepare you, as to what you are going to face in your life, in order to make you a

successful human being, conscious of the facts & realities of life.

On your 24th Birthday, you will be at the threshold of start of your career, either in job or in search of it. You

have to understand that our life is full of unpredictable uncertainties of ups & downs, joys & sorrows, failures &

successes, fortunes & misfortunes, wellbeing & un-wellness, gains & losses, life & death, etc., but life has to go

on.

In this world, you will observe lot of extremes between the Rich & the Poor, when the gap between them is

increasing day by day. In the mad race of materialistic development, we have lost our moral / human values &

responsibilities towards our family, our fellow beings, society & nation as well. Our lust for wealth & power is

increasing, as the more we have the more we want. This life is too short to live but we remain ignorant of our

death and waste our life only in materialistic affairs, without really enjoying it and when we want to enjoy it,

we have no time left because the Angel of death is already knocking at our doors. While planning for future, we

spoil our present and then in future we repent while thinking of the past. We lose our health to gain wealth

and then we lose wealth to gain health.

Rich struggle & sweat to digest their food even if taken one time only but the poor struggle & sweat to get one

time bread. Rich don’t get sound sleep in their five star bed rooms but poor are snoring in sound sleep on

footpaths open to sky. Rich spend hours in their cozy bathrooms to clear their bowels but poor get relieved in

seconds after open defecation. Rich dispose their wastes but poor make their livelihood after searching through

their waste. The rich increase the heights of their residential sky scrapers but poor live in underground drains &

open pipes. The rich waste potable water in their swimming pools at top floors but poor don’t have free access

even to a drop to drink. Rich fight to get spare time from their jobs but poor fight to work for extra hours. Poor

spend life with their family but rich hardly see their family members together. Poor carry their old ailing

parents on their back , walking bare feet from one hospital to other but rich through drivers of their

limousines, drop their parents to die in old age homes, under supervision of poor care takers. Rich don’t

follow their religion but poor get exploited on religion. It is up to you that what type of life you want to have

here in this world and hereinafter, but you will have to follow only the right path after due thought, weighing

all the pros & cons.

I am giving you some advisory tips to remember, analyze and follow up in rest of your life, because, as your

father it is my duty and privilege to guide you and forewarn you to be prepared to face the realities.

Follow the career of your choice and put in best of your efforts to ensure fulfilling the commitments made.

Honor your words but don’t expect others to honor yours.

Follow the right path for your career progression & monetary gains. Shortcuts & illegal methods may be

attractive & fast but they don’t last. Slow & steady wins the race.

Follow one profession to perfection and excellence without making changes. A rolling stone gathers no mass.

You are in an era of specialization and in this competitive world; it is the survival of the fittest & the best.

Increase your professional knowledge, which has infinite limits. Knowledge you gain and the hard work you

put in is your power & is your weapons to fight & progress in your career. It is for you to decide, whether you

want to live in a small rented flat as a low salaried employee or in your own Cozy Villa, as a successful Boss.

A number of people in the past with meager education or knowledge have grown successful but that does

not mean you can also be successful without gaining requisite knowledge or higher education. Knowledge is

your real potential & power.

No dream is impossible to achieve. What is needed is your commitment towards it, with honest dedicated

efforts. There is no substitute for hard work.

My responsibility as your financial supporter ends today as you are now 24 years old and I also do not want

you to monetarily support your parents but request you to visit us occasionally and spend some time with us

along with your family. It will be a treasure of comfort for us..

Make it a point to spend sufficient time with your own family, even if it may cost you some monetary loss.

These moments you spend with your family, are your life time treasures of pleasures, memories & achievements,

which cannot be purchased or compensated later on.

Do good to all but don’t expect all to be good and nice to you, as nobody has the mandate to treat you well,

except your own parents. Be grateful to those who are good to you. Those who seem to be good & nice with

you are not necessarily your friends but can be foes also, so analyze their motives. Win the hearts of your

foes by your good deeds and being kind to them as to forgive is divine.

Uphold the moral & human values. Always try to help the needy & poor, not necessarily monetarily (if you

don’t have finances) but through your tongue, hands, pen or other means of support. Do the good & forget

it.

Follow your religion & its teachings faithfully in their right perspectives, without criticizing other religions.

No religion teaches us hatred for others but they guide us towards complete & ultimate submission before

our Creator, humanity , moral values , brotherhood, charity, help & support for needy & poor , good deeds

and the like . Have tolerance towards other religions & don’t get swayed by the wrong teachings &

interpretations given by various religious preachers.

You may err number of times and will face their impact as well, but don’t get discouraged. To err is human

and to learn is success. Remember I stumbled & I saw. Perfection comes only after analyzing and learning

from your own mistakes & good decisions and those of others as well. This is valued & real experience.

This world is cruel also and you may be thrown out of your job any time, when you are not needed, as

nobody is indispensable or you may lose what you have or whom you love. These are temporary phases, take

it easy and pull on without losing heart. It will make you stand up again.

You could have love affair/s with your girlfriend/s during your college days and they might have left you. It

is a part of life and don’t be sentimental. Love is transitional feeling, which fade with time. Select a life

partner of your choice based on her virtues & values and not on her beauty & valuables. All that glitters is

not gold.

I am sure you will follow my advisory and you will not take me otherwise but only as your guide and mentor.

Autumn breeze journeys through

Longing for your presence near

The smell of rose spill abound

Come home thee beloved dear.

The oyster gave their sparkling souls

Tender rose its heavenly smoke

Let us sew the garland brothers

The Scattered pearls of life joining together.

Some are buds and some flowers

The beauty of nature has its own author

Flower vase can never limit

The lord’s wish in one corner.

If believe togetherness is gain

Tear apart the hatred’s chain

Rope in the solitary soul

Realize thou the supreme goal.

The blue sky houses no more clouds

The touch of moisture nowhere found

Sunlight cast a golden hue

My rhythm my life I long for you.

Spill the color spill the hue

The canvas of life with all your view

The checkered flag of black and white

With colors of hope anew and anew.

In the playhouse of thou Almighty

Life’s stream hums by

Respect this delicate balance

Else all will fade by.

Lord in your vastness

How insignificant my identity

Thou show me the path

In realizing your divinity. H P Chakravarty, Sr. Bridge Design Engineer

THAT UNCONDITIONAL LOVE …….

Parents are all that we could look up to,

When we call for a miracle,

When we are broke, when we are happy.

They are like god, or even better, as

they are always around us.

Can be seen, touched and believed.

No matter what happens, no matter

whom and what we become later, they

remain the same.

They'll always hold us up safely, guide us

for good of our own and love us,

Without any complaints or demands,

Under their guidance the odds in life get

transformed into expressways of

immense happiness.

Even when they are far away from us

their blessings are always there with us.
