We hope that you find the courses interesting and benficial to your growth at VSU. We

have an abundance of offerings including certificate programs. These courses are open

to all VSU faculty, staff, and student employees, and we will also offer customized classes,

departmental retreats, and meeting facilitation upon request.

General InformationCampus Training ProgramsThe programs listed in this catalog are open to all VSU employees, some courses are also available for PDC Regional Partners. Classes are filled on a first come, first served basis. If a class is full, please call Employee Development at 229.259.5105 to be put on a waiting list. Waiting lists registrants are notified of vacancies and placed into the classes as cancellations are received. If you register for a class, but are unable to attend, please cancel within 24 hours of the class. Classes are subject to cancellation if registration is low. Employees should verify with their supervisors that they can attend a class during work hours.

Class AttendanceIn order to receive credit for a class, participants must attend 90% of the scheduled class time. Students may miss scheduled class activities only in the event of illness, emergencies, or business-related reasons. The course instructor or facilitator should be notified of planned abscences or tardiness. For excused abscences during multi-day courses contact the instructor to discuss options available to receive full credit.

Training Library MaterialsCan’t get away to attend class? We have another option. The Employee and Organizational Development Office has training materials available free of charge to employees for checkout from the Training Library, We have audio, video, and textbook resources on a variety of topics. The list of titles is included at the end of this catalog. Call us at 229.259.5105 for additional information.

Cutomized ProgramsWe provide customized training for departments upon request. Our office will work closely with the requesting department to identify the training needs, develop the course materials, deliver the course, and assess the effectiveness of the program. Training TranscriptsOfficial records of attendance are maintained for training sessions offered or coordinated by our office. Employees or their supervisors needing a transcript for promotion or transfer purposes, or for discussion during the performance evaluation process, may request one by calling 229.259.5105. Please allow 5 working days to process the request.

New Employee OrientationWe provide orientation for full-time benefited staff and administrative employees the last Thursday of every month in the Universit Center Rose Room. Veteram employees are always welcome to attend and find out about the latest changes on campus.

Safe Space1 Day / 1.5 HoursUnlike more visible under-represented groups, lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) persons cannot be readily identified. Likewise, there is no easy method of finding persons supportive of LGBT people. The Safe Space Program strives to provide a way for supportive persons within the campus community to prominently identify themselves. The program, which is broken into four parts, enhances Valdosta State University’s student mission to provide a diverse student population with an inspired education, a safe learning environment, a nurturing community, and a wealth of experience that assists students in molding their futures in a creative, conscious, and caring fashion while preparing them to be lifelong learners who will meet the needs of a changing global society.

Goal of the Safe Space Program:

• The goal of this program is to provide a more appreciative and nurturing environment for LGBT people at Valdosta State University by establishing an identifiable network of people who can provide support, information, and act as allies to LGBT individuals within the campus community.

• This Part I class will focus on language, history and basic knowledge. By completing Part I, you and your department achieves Safe Space designation. One you have completed Part I, you are eligible to continue Part 2-4, if so desired.

Defensive Driving2 Days / 6 Hours

The “AAA Driver Improvement Course” is designed to help you fine-tune your safe-driving skills. Fortunately, there are guidelines to help you assess conditions more accurately, predict actions of other drivers and make decisions with a more realistic concept of consequences. You’ll learn how to manage risks by controlling visibility, time and space. This program is taught by certified instructors and is six hours in length. You will receive a certificate from AAA once you have attended the course and passed the written test. The program is free to all VSU employees and $10 for relatives. Customized classes are available for departments. Upon completion you may be eligible for a 10% discount on your personal automobile insurance. Check with your agent.

Today’s Housing Departments are instead working to develop Residential Curriculums where the focus is on developing timelines of what it means to be a first-year student (and beyond). This session will provide an overview for the efforts being made here at VSU as we are in the beginning stages of developing our Residential Curriculum. Appreciative Advising is a student-centered approach utilizing positive, open-ended questions to assist students in optimizing their educational experiences. It is likewise crucial for academic advisors to assist their students in seeing that they are not in school to obtain a degree as much as they are here to learn and develop the knowledge, skills, and abilities that will help them in their future careers. Instead of asking their students, “What do you want to major in?” advisors should be asking, “What are you interested in or what do you want to learn about?” Or if a student has declared a major, an advisor should ask, “What is it about this field that interests you and what would you like to learn more about?” This session will help advisors to better serve their students by providing advisors with various communication techniques, counseling theories, as well as career resources that ultimately will allow their students to make the necessary connections between their educational experiences and their personal/career aspirations.

Working With At-Risk& Probationary Students 1 Day / 2 HoursThe transition from high school or the workforce to college is not an easy one for many students. Students come from a multitude of various backgrounds and therefore the skill sets and needs of each student are equally diverse. It is vital to understand that not all students begin college with the same level of knowledge and experiences and this greatly determines their academic success. It is the job of the academic advisor to be able to assess the needs of their students as well as assist them in meeting those needs in whatever way they can. This session will help advisors to determine the role and responsibilities of advisors to students on probation and will equip them with the knowledge, tools, and resources to ensure the achievement of greater academic and personal success among their advisees. Learning Objectives:

• Clearly define the different terms and levels of academic probation and institutional policies regarding academic probation and suspension.

• Identify the numerous risk factors or indicators that can lead to academic probation.

• Utilize multiple tools and advising techniques purposed to assess the academic, emotional, and social needs of students on academic probation.

• Connect students to various campus resources to assist in academic or personal matters.

• Develop programming to work with students on probation, at-risk, or being reinstated on an individual as well as group level.
