Good job FCCLA club members and Mrs. Leyva for making Christmas just a little merrier for some children and elderly of the 7 Mile District!

The Students from Rice Elementary School Grades Pre-K to 6th Grade spent the past few weeks hand crafting ornaments and other Christmas Items to be sold at the Annual Christmas Bazaar. Mr. Steven Rufe and Ms. Kellie Boykin are the sponsors of the Rice Elementary Student Council who spear headed this successful event.

Every year, the Rice Elementary Student Council highlights the creativity of the students through classroom projects for events like the Christmas Bazaar. The projects yielded Christmas ornaments, door hangers and other items made by the students.

Hi! My name is Rozanna Rustin. I work with Save the Children as a home visitor with the Early Steps to School Success Program. As an addition, I also work with the Raising a Reader Program where I do book exchange with preschoolers here in the school and in the homes. I really enjoy what I do.

Here are some goals we are aiming for with the families I service and the school district: 1) Children will enter the school with the skills necessary for school success; 2) Parents will have the knowledge and skills to support their child’s education; 3) Home and school connection will be strong; and 4) Early childhood knowledge and skill in the communities will significantly increase. I would encourage everyone to begin reading to your child at infancy as it is key to learning literacy.

I would encourage you and your families to come and visit during the day. For visiting hours or for more information regarding the program please call me at (928) 475-2315 extension 13056. If I am not available (due to home visits) please leave a message.

Every year, the Rice Elementary Student Council highlights the creativity of the students through classroom projects for events like the Christmas Bazaar. The projects yielded Christmas ornaments, door hangers and other items made by the students.

Many of these items were sold out by the public who came in to support their children by buying their handmade crafts. The community was also invited to set up tables to sell their homemade crafts to the crowds who attended the event.

Mrs. Swift’s students were on hand to sing Christmas Carols in Apache for the busy shoppers. San Carlos Unified School District #20 is proud of their students for making the Christmas Bazaar a great success!

Secondary Students from Mr. Klindt’s Agriculture class got a chance to complete courses in the S-130 Firefighting Training and S-190 Introduction to Wildland Fire Behavior.

These courses are required for anyone who wants to be certified as a wildland firefighter with the SWFF (Southwest Forestry Firefighter) Program with the San Carlos Apache Tribe. The courses were taught by Jeffrey Phillips , San Carlos Fire management Training Officer.

These classes have given the secondary students an edge in completing the final steps to become certified as a SWFF wildland firefighter. Congratulations to the secondary students for burning through the course requirements for a possible rewarding career in Forestry Firefighting! Thanks to Mr. Klindt for expanding the career opportunities for our secondary students!

On January 3, 2015 at Central High School, San Carlos Secondary students were introduced to the challenge for the First Robotics competition shown for the first time to all participating schools.

In order for the teams to compete, they must first build their robots to install motors and circuit boards to control the movements of the robot.

This year a new mentor has joined the secondary school mentors to help challenge the students with coming up with their own conceptual design of the robot itself. John Gatumor from Resolution Copper Company attended the robotics challenge with the students. John commented on the fact that he was glad to be able to mentor the students.

Thanks to Teacher/ Mentors Jeniffer Guevarra-Madrid and Renevie Magboo, they have been working diligently with the students. Congratulations to the secondary students for participating in the First Robotics Kick Off Competition!

Thanks to the (JOM) Johnson O’Malley Committee, the secondary schools students are now able to wear uniform issued PE Shirts for the PE classes at the Secondary School. The Carol M. White PE Grant Coordinator Christina Flores had the vision to help the school district to become a more uniformed and organized PE class with the school issued shirts. Ms. Flores worked in conjunction with the PE teachers, administration and the JOM Parent Committee to achieve this milestone for the Secondary School. This will be the first year

5WINTER 2014-2015 San Carlos Unified School District

Ms. Christina Flores, Coordinator of the Carole M. White PE Grant and PE teachers Tyler Naumen and Scott Hennings of the Rice Elementary School brought their cup stacking champ to compete with the Diabetes attendees during the Diabetes Conference on November 19, 2014. Elliott Whiterock came prepared to challenge anyone who wanted to beat his cup stacking time of 3.97 seconds.

Cup stacking is one of several games provided by the Carole M. White PE Grant. This game is a mentally challenging game that requires a student to work and concentrate while focusing on mind and hand coordination.

Elliott challenged quite a few challengers, all older than he was and came out of the conference as the reigning champion of cup stacking!

Congratulations Elliot for making the cup stacking appear to be so easy to the Diabetes attendees!

The AIA recognize student-athletes selected in the statewide Coaches Poll. Thanks to Coach Pietila for actively participating in the recognition of his players during the 2-14-2015 football season.

San Carlos Unified School District would like to congratulate the San Carlos Varsity Braves who played to the best of their ability during the football season.

This holiday Season the Food Services Department and San Carlos Unified School District had a Month of December Giveaways Drawing for Rice Elementary and Secondary School students. Students who participated in the school breakfast and lunch program were given tickets daily for a chance to win bicycles or Electric guitars provided by the Food Services Department.

Mr. Martin’ Leyva, Food Services Director and Ms. Catherine Steele were on hand to deliver the prizes to the lucky students who participated in the school breakfast and lunch program.

Congratulations winners and thank you for participating in the Food Services Department and School District Giveaway Drawing!

It was all about Diabetes Prevention. The Diabetes Prevention Conference was held at the Rice Elementary School Gym and the Burdette Hall on Wednesday, November 19th. At the conference, Mrs. Leyva’s culinary club’s food demonstration was all about eating healthy and cooking delicious meals high in protein and low in saturated fats. Diabetes can be prevented and the SCSS students were excited to bring their talents and skills in the kitchen to the conference. They wanted to show everyone that eating healthy can be nutritious and easy to make for the entire family.

The students handed out recipes of the two dishes they prepared for the attendees. Beef with green beans and Chicken fajitas were two simple yet delicious dishes the students whipped up in their one hour presentation. During the cooking demonstration, the students introduced themselves and explained why they chose to be a member of the culinary arts club beginning with Anthony Thorne, President of the FCCLA for 2014-2015. Anthony spoke to the attendees and explained how learning how to follow directions and staying on task in the kitchen helped him with skills to become a better leader. It also taught him how to cook safely and to follow the safety procedures in the kitchen before turning on any of the appliances. Thanks to the Culinary Club for providing healthy alternatives to the Diabetes Conference and their attendees.

7WINTER 2014-2015 San Carlos Unified School District

On November 6th, this past Thursday, Mr. Klindt, the Agriculture Science teacher and the San Carlos Secondary School students went down to the valley for a field trip to the Arizona Career Construction Days. This annual two day event was held at the Arizona Reserve in Phoenix.

This event was an opportunity for the students to see firsthand what skills were needed for a career in Construction. Every student was given a construction site certified helmet and safety goggles to protect their head and eyes during the day’s events. They also received water, Gatorade, snacks and a t-shirt for attending the event and to keep them hydrated during their day in the sun.

Mr. Dave Nelson from the Federal Highways Administration had the students sit together to receive the rules and regulations for attending the event from Sgt. Olivas from the Arizona Reserves, a military reservation location.

The students were encouraged to ask questions to those working at the booths. Some of the questions they were encouraged to ask were, “How much will I make for this craft?” and “Will you train me to learn how to become certified in this craft?”

Even the National Guard was asked to be considered as a career. The students got to meet with prospective Construction employers and even had a chance working with tools and other machinery.

These students were presented with an opportunity to recognize the skills needed for those positions taught at SCTI. It was an exciting event and our students enjoyed the opportunity to see what was available to them in the Construction trades field. Another great educational opportunity for the San Carlos Braves Students!

Students who attended the event and made the most of their day are listed below.
