Dear CKA Supporter:

On October 20-21, 2017, the Council of Korean Americans (CKA) will convene our third annual National Summit & Gala at the Ronald Reagan Building in Washington, DC.

The CKA National Summit & Gala began in 2015 as an opportunity for Korean Americans to gather in our nation’s capital to reflect on key issues and celebrate our contributions to the U.S. It is a crucial opportunity to hear from elected ocials and connect with business and community leaders to plan and mobilize for action on matters that aect us all. In October, we will come together on behalf of all Korean Americans and assert our voice in action in our government, our society, and our communities.

The third annual CKA National Summit & Gala will include a briefing on Capitol Hill focused on topics of interest to our community as well as convenings with leading Korean Americans from government, business, academia, and entertainment. Past speakers and honorees include United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon; World Bank President Jim Yong Kim; Judge Lucy Koh, the first female Korean American federal judge; Founder and CEO of Forever 21 Don Chang; renowned chemist and philanthropist Dr. Myung Ki Hong; Nightline anchor Juju Chang; and tech entrepreneur and co-owner of the San Francisco 49ers Gideon Yu.

We invite you to become a sponsor and join us in Washington, DC for this important program. As a sponsor of the 2017 Summit & Gala, you will provide key support as we gather to ensure our voices are heard and we continue Empowering our Community to aect change.

Thank you,

ABOUTTHE COUNCIL OF

KOREAN AMERICANS

The Council of Korean Americans (CKA) was founded in 2011 to increase the civic engagement, visibility, and influence of the Korean American community and to advance Korean American leadership everywhere. Today, CKA is positioned to be the leading national, independent, non-partisan voice for the Korean American community. We are dedicated to providing national leadership on issues critical to our community and preparing the next generation of Korean Americans to lead the society they will inherit.

Our priorities are:

Voice & Advocacy

Advocacy is central to CKA’s reason for being because it is the tool that will ultimately drive change. Through eective advocacy, we can shape public policy that aect our families, communities, and our country. CKA educates our members and the broader community about the democratic process and the ways that we can voice our views on a wide range of issues, including immigration, race relations, and US relations with North Korea.

Leadership Development

More Korean Americans must take on leader-ship roles in our society and demonstrate the power and potential of our community in poli-tics, academia, science, journalism, media, the arts, and business. CKA’s flagship Public Service Internship (PSI) Program creates critical learn-ing and networking opportunities for college students. Our mentorship programs allow older and more experienced career professionals to impart knowledge to the next generation.

Expanding Our Reach

CKA began with sixteen members in 2011 and today includes more than 135 Korean Americans. In the coming years, CKA plans to broaden its membership while building coalitions to expand our impact outside of our ethnic community. At the same time we grow our membership base, we will also look for synergies with groups that share our values and goals and work in an inclusive manner. Our partners include the Ploughshares Fund, American Jewish Committee, and the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus (CAPAC).

As Korean Americans, we understand what it means to rise above challenges and deal with adversity. We have made great strides in a short period of time, but we have more work to do to be seen and heard in American society.

At CKA, we will continue to assert a strong, clear voice on issues that matter to all of us, partnering with leaders and organizations whenever possible so that our collective voice is heard in the mainstream and in the highest levels of our government.

Last year, over 500 people attended our annual Gala & Awards Dinner. The theme was Fulfilling the Promise of America. We heard from UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon about his vision for the Korean American community and the global society as well as the Ambassador-Desig-nate to the Philippines Sung Kim about his career in diplomacy. The 2016 honorees were: Co-Owner of San Francisco 49ers and Chairman & CEO of Bowers & Wilkins Gideon Yu (CKA Trailblazer Award), US District Judge for Northern District of California Judge Lucy Koh (CKA Public Servant Award), and Chief of Sta of the City of Boston Daniel Koh (CKA Young Leader Award).
