Guard Returns to DutyThe Arms of Australia Inn Muse-

umrsquos gatehouse Marine guard has

been returned He went AWOL in Au-gust 2008 and was returned just be-fore this years William Cox Festival and Open Day

The guard was found in the back-yard of a vacated unit opposite OrsquoDonoghues Emu Plains He was then thrown over the school fence where he was found and placed in a shed at the back of the school for safe keeping The Nepean District Histori-cal Society was notified and he has now been returned to full time duty

Old Emu Plains Post Office DevelopmentPenrith City Council has a develop-

ment application for conservation and restoration works at the heritage listed Old Emu Plains Post Office (former Australian Arms Inn) The site has been owned by Council since 1983 and has been vacant since then The building has been vandalised numer-

ous times threatening the integrity and significance of the building

The proposed development seeks to undertake renovation works for future commercial usesThree mature trees deemed to be unsafe will be removed

Bowling them overGlenbrookrsquos Maryann Parcell be-

gan playing lawn bowls in Glenbrook in 1998 Last year she won the NSW Player of the Series award and she has just returned from being in the winning lsquoTeam of 4rsquo event at the NSW State Championships at Cloncurry

Maryann also came third in the State singles She now plays with St Johns Park club several times a week but still enjoys playing with the Glen-brook Bowling Club Maryann said ldquoItrsquos a great sport for any age and like a game of chess with a tough of exer-cise The bowling club in Glenbrook would love some new membersrdquo

Canrsquot Wait for SummerChildren at Emu Heights Public

School canrsquot wait for warm weather to arrive so they can pick the first crop from their new vegetable garden

The garden was built at the school through the combined talents and

generosity of the Lower Blue Moun-tains Rotary Club Nepean High Year 9 students and Fencing and Gates Commercial Pty Ltd

The children working in class teams will grow a range of foods in-cluding tomatoes carrots onions pumpkins strawberries lettuce and

herbs Theyrsquoll also learn about the importance of complimentary farming with flowering plants planted around vegetables to encourage pollination and natural pest control

For many children this will be their first experience growing their own vegetables a learning opportunity the school hopes will inspire many bud-ding farmers of the future

William Cox Open DayEvery year in July the society holds

an Open Day to celebrate the start of the building of the road over the Blue Mountains by William Cox

This day covers everything from big army displays to jumping castles for the kids

Taking the museum to the public

On Australia Day and other occasions where displays are exhibited the society takes history to the people with a number of items of interest housed in a marquee

Historical books are also on sale at the displays and during the year a number of book stalls are held in the shopping centres in Penrith

The inn as a back drop is a great place to hold that special function a wedding photo shoots parties meetings or just a general get together

A meeting room is also available with a kitchenette and there are toilets for the disabled

Hiring the inn

DisplaysThe Arms of Australia Inn museum

was set up by the Nepean District Historical Society in 1976 as a place

where people could come and see items and photos from the early days of the colony

The museum contains thousands of artefacts - including agricultural equipment - dating from the 1790s and all have been used or manufactured in the local area

Ghost Tours Tours are run on

Wednesday evenings or by appointment

They include the history of the area a perception test and a possible meeting with

the past travellers who have taken up permanent residence in the Inn

What goes on at the inn

HistoryThe Arms of Australia Inn Museum is

one of the oldest buildings in Penrith if not the oldest

This former inn was built in two

In 1840 John Mortimer bought the building and ran it as a wayside inn on the main road to Bathurst Orange and the gold diggings

The Cobb and Co coaches that plied the road day and night used to stop at the inn as did many bullock team drivers taking stock and provisions over the mountains

When the rail line came through in 1865 trade dropped off dramatically and the building was sold and used as a private home for the next hundred years

The land was then sold for subdivision and the building was vandalised

Rather than have it demolished the Nepean District Historical Society asked Penrith City Council to purchase the site which they did

The society took over the building in 1972 and restored it to its former glory

The inn now operates as a hands on museum and continues to collect and display artefacts many of which are in working order

Activities for schoolsIn order to make history a living

experience there is a range of hands on activities for school groups

Students are generally broken down in to small groups and each group is given a different activity to do for up to 15 minutes

Jessica Fox wins Olympic Gold

Leonay student Jessica Fox has won a gold medal in the Womenrsquos K1 at the recent Youth Olympic Games in Singapore and a bronze in the Ladies CI final at the Senior World Champion-ships in Slovenia

This has capped off a remark-able year for Jessica who also won two gold medals at the Junior World Championships in France last month At only 16 years of age Jessica is well on her way to achieving her goal of com-peting at the Olympics Congratulations

Nepean High Schoolrsquos Migrant Story

Nepean High Schoolrsquos year 9 ex-tension group has been involved in a program called ldquoMigrant Storyrdquo People who have migrated to Australia were interviewed by students on their own life and their travel to Australia

The students involved were Re-becca Waters Kristie Spooner and Stephanie White ldquoI absolutely loved the program and I found it eye open-ing to hear all of the problems and hassles that these people had to go through My partner was Johanna Van

Oostrum who migrated to Australia with five children and her husbandrdquo said Rebecca

ldquoThe migrant story project was an unbelievable experience for me I nev-er would have done this I interviewed Ramsis who was a migrant from Egypt He has a wife and two girls I think Ramsis is very happy to have come to Australiardquo said Kristie

ldquoMigrant Stories is a great pro-gram that helps young Australians understand what some people would go through to live in Australialdquo said Stephanie

The Migrant Story workshop was held at the Penrith Library over several weeks The students who participated in this program received a surprise visit when the author of Grief Girl Erin Vincent arrived to educate the stu-dents on interviewing techniques and share some of her interviewing stories

Nepean High Schoolrsquos English teacher Paige Murray said ldquoAs a teacher the migrant story project was a unique interesting fun and practi-cal project to be involved with It made me proud to see the students involved in meaningful communication with people from other backgrounds of varying experiences and ages It was also satisfying to see the shared sto-

Hear Ye Hear Ye Emu Plains Students Speak Their Minds

After a gruelling in-school competition four students from Emu Plains Public School were selected to represent their school in the prestigious Blue Mountains Public Speaking and Oral Reading Competition The competition was held between 14 local schools at Winmalee Public School

Two Stage 2 students S t e p h a n i e McElroy from Year 3 and Matt Cun-ningham from Year 4 read a passage from their fa-vourite books ldquoJust Disgust-ingrdquo and ldquoJust

Shockingrdquo by Andy Griffith Stage 3 students Lily Hubble Year 5 and Nick Delbridge Year 6 spoke about topics close to their hearts Lilyrsquos topic was ldquoMy Puppyrdquo and Nick spoke about the process of Year 6 students ldquochoosing a gift for the schoolrdquo

All their efforts were very well rewarded with Lily and Matt receiving a Highly Commended medal each and Stephanie and Nick receiving trophies and shields for win-ning their respective categories It is very rare for students from the same school to win more than one category

Everyone at the school is very proud of their efforts and achievements
