Why are we here? Why are we here? What am I meant to do? At some times they seem like unnecessary questions. We know what we have to do – go to work, look after the kids, and keep the house running. At other times events in our

lives might be a trigger for these questions – the birth of a child, or the children moving out, or the death of someone we care about. Then they are questions that we ask ourselves, and we’d really like to have better answers.

Service Times: Sundays @ 8.00am, 9.30am and 6.30pm. Plus activities for adults and young people right throughout the week

Over the last month we’ve been thinking as a church through God’s answers to Big Questions, and these were some of the big questions. I couldn’t do it justice to try and answer this one in just these few lines. But would it be fair to say that at least at some point in our lives, we know it’s a question that matters? Where will you find the answer? God in His Bible has given an answer that I’m persuaded by, and you may be too. If you’re interested in thinking it through more for yourself why not join us at church, or at our Christianity Explored – One Life, What’s it all About? six week course. It starts in May, and details are on our web site, or available over the phone. Roger Cunningham

Green Fingers At McCarthyMcCarthy Catholic College is one of only 4 schools in the Sydney basin that has taken

on the challenge to be part of the first annual ‘Seed2Tree’ program. The Seed2Tree program is supported and funded by HOTROCK, a ‘charity that provides financial and professional support to help schools integrate sustainability into their curriculum and whole-school management and systems’. The Seed2Tree initiative also includes support from the Hawkesbury-Nepean CMA, Camden Council, and the Alive! Project managed by the Hawkesbury Environment Network.

McCarthy has integrated the Seed2Tree program into the Year 7 Agriculture rotation within the Mandatory Technology Syllabus. This will require each student within the Year7 cohort to be charged with the responsibility of caring for the seedlings throughout the course of the year. It is hoped that this hands-on approach to environmental issues

within their local area will bring students greater awareness to environmental issues both here in Australia and globally.

Recently, Richard Swan & Phil Smith from HOTROCK visited McCarthy Catholic College. Students were taught how to propagate, plant and care for their 650 native seeds/seedlings. They were also taught how their involvement in the program will have a positive impact on CO2 in the atmosphere, habitat creation for native animals, salinity, biodiversity, climate change and the reduction of algal blooms in their local Nepean area.

Students are required to look after their seedlings in the schools purpose built shade house until late in Term 3. At this time, students will be transplanting these seedlings into the Camden area with the help of Rob Corby, Natural ResourceOfficeratCamdenCouncil.

For information about this program and other programs run by HOTROCK, please visit their website: www.thehotrock.org.au Alternatively, you can contact Phil Smith who is their Sydney Program Manager (0412338687).

Gardening ... When Size Matters

Most of us think of our garden as a sanctuary from the stresses of daily life, a place to relax and admire. Patches of ground are highly priced and space should be used wisely.

In the plant world there are now so many options available for even the smallest of gardens.

Walls are an ideal way to show off plants espaliered or colourful climbing plants. New varieties of dwarf citrus trees and fruit trees are perfect in large containers. The beauty of these edible favourites is they only grow half of the standard tree yet still produce full sized fruit.

Or if you’re looking for a hedge with an edge why not try the min-a-min dwarf murraya, a classic popular highly fragrant plant with glossy green foliage.

These plants and many more are available at Glenmore Garden Plus -757 Mulgoa Road, Mulgoa.

Why not take your mum there for Mother’s Day. See the ad on this page for the Mother’s Day special.

Are You Stressed?Do you suffer from eczema, dermatitis, panic attacks,

Stress is a major contributing factor and often the underlying cause of many illnesses. Stress can affect people of all ages.

EFT – Emotional Freedom Technique – a complementary therapy which helps you deal with many of todays issues, is becoming renowned world wide for its effectiveness. A combination of acupuncture (without the needles) and psychotherapy, it is a non-invasive, harmless therapy working with the acupressure points whereby gentle tapping on the points can have a very calming effect on the body by reducing cortisol (the stress hormone) levels.

PAWS AWHILE Adopt a Friend for Life!

Our Kitten Adoption Program enables us to find homes for stray and unwanted kittens.

Each kitten has a health check by Camille and Erin. They have had their first vaccination, been desexed, microchipped and have a product called Advocate applied, which controls fleas, intestinal worms and heartworm. We also worm them for tapeworms.

We have 4 lovely kittens ready for adoption now. They have been raised here from a young age at the veterinary hospital and are very dog friendly. If you can tolerate Pony, you can tolerate any dog!

The 4 kittens are from the same litter and are 10 weeks of age. Katie is a tortoiseshell female. Kevin is a white and ginger male. Kobie is a ginger male. Kyle is a ginger and white male. They all have playful personalities and are so much fun to watch when they play together.

When you adopt a kitten you are making a long term decision. Cats can live up to 20 years if provided with a loving caring home. Kittens have certain requirements including providing a balanced and nutritious diet which you will need to change to an adult formula after the age of 6 to 9 months.

Your kitten needs a yearly vaccination to protect it against diseases. Routine flea and worm medication must be also given.

If you are interested in adopting one of our kittens, feel free to pop in for a visit. New Nursing Staff

We are growing! We employed 2 new veterinary nurses in November 2012, and have just employed another qualified nurse.

Liz is joining our team with 5 years of veterinary nursing experience. Liz is a qualified veterinary nurse and pet stylist. Her qualification is Pro Groomer Level 1 and 2, and she was trained by a master groomer.

Liz has many pets, including: Syber the Siberian husky, who is very boisterous; Tiffany the Australian bulldog, who is a tank; Sefton the Beagalier, who just started puppy preschool here; Satchmo the smoodle, who is a typical neurotic poodle; and Abbey the cat, who is just a normal cat. Liz is an avid horse rider, who competes at the National level in dressage.

Jobs And Skills Expo Coming To Penrith People looking for work in Penrith will soon get a chance to meet

local employers and training organisations all in the one place when the Federal Government’s Jobs and Skills Expo comes to town on 23 April 2013.

Federal Member for Lindsay, David Bradbury, today announced that Penrith will host one of the eleven Jobs and Skills Expos this year, which forms part of the Government’s nationwide strategy to help local people get into jobs and secure training opportunities.

“This is great news for local residents who are looking for work, as well as local businesses who need local workers to keep their businesses growing,” Mr Bradbury said.

“The expo will provide jobseekers with an opportunity to meet local employers and training and employment services providers from our region.

“Last year Penrith hosted an expo which connected over 4,200 people with employment and skills training.”

The Jobs and Skills Expo will have a jobs board with jobs on offer and a skills board displaying local training opportunities available in the area.

“Labor stands for jobs and I’m proud that this Government has created more than 800,000 jobs since 2007,” Mr Bradbury said. “The Jobs and Skills Expo is another practical way that our Government can assist local residents to up skill and get back into work.”

Exhibiting is free and those interested in exhibiting or advertising a job vacancy at any of the Australian Government Jobs and Skills Expos should call 13 11 58 or visit www.humanservices.gov.au/expos.

Employers can also contact their Local Employment Coordinator at any time to find out about assistance the Australian Government can provide. Contact details for Local Employment Coordinators can be found at http://deewr.gov.au/list-local-employment-coordinators.

Last month, I gave you an outline of a parenting tool called “emotion coaching”.

This month, I thought I would give you an example of how I do emotion coaching. I don’t follow the outline exactly. I go with what is happening at the time. The most important part is that you acknowledge your child’s feelings, stay with her whilst she is upset, and support her to move on when she is ready.

Scene: My youngest son accidently washed a Christmas beetle down the sink. He loves all creatures, and has a compassionate heart. I heard a wail from the bathroom, and him screaming that he had killed the beetle.

Me: You are so sad about the Christmas beetle getting washed down the sink (noticing the emotion).

He headed towards me and leapt into my arms for a hug. He continued to cry and lament the death of the Christmas

beetle. This boy has big emotions.Me: You are so, so sad. You are worried that it has died. You

wish it hadn’t happened. You are crying. (Reflecting what he was saying and observing what he was doing.)

I continued to hold him, and reflect his sadness. Me: Where do you feel your sadness?Boy: In my heart, and in my eyes because I can’t stop crying

(locating the emotion in the body).Me: I would feel sad too because I like creatures too

(empathising). When he had calmed down, and he was over his upset, I asked

him what he knew about Christmas beetles (exploring). We had a discussion about Christmas beetles. How they change from lawn grubs into beetles. How our dogs dig up the grubs and eat them (yuk!).

This wasn’t a teaching moment, it was a shared moment - I know what interests him. His dad piped up and said that Christmas must be coming again because it was a Christmas beetle, and that made the boy laugh.

Part of being a positive parent is helping to organise your child’s feelings. It is not telling her to “get over it, and on with it”. It’s not dismissing how she feels. It’s not distracting her with a toy to try to cheer her up. It is being with your child through all of the bigness and discomfort of it all. You don’t want your child to be so upset or angry, and you are tempted to try and move her through it quickly so you can get on with being calmer and happier. However, the more you acknowledge your child’s feelings and “be with” her, the more emotionally attuned she will become. In time, she will learn how to organise her own feelings because she has had it modelled for her.

I don’t live in Disneyland. I know this is not possible all of the time. There are days when I have a screaming boy when I’m trying to get out the door to get to work. I do some acknowledging of feelings but I tell him that I don’t have time to organise his feelings the way he is used to. Because he is “heard” most of the time, he can tolerate the times when it’s not possible.Next month: How to do emotion coaching with an angry child.Narelle Smith

Preheat oven to 200°C. Place oil, cumin, garlic, pumpkin, fennel and onions in a large bowl. Season with salt and pepper, and toss to combine.2. Transfer pumpkin to a large roasting pan and roast, turning occasionally, for 15 minutes. Add fennel and onions, and roast, turning occasionally, for a further 25 minutes or until all vegetables are tender. Remove pan from oven and cool for 10 minutes.3. Meanwhile, to make dressing, whisk all ingredients in a bowl, then season.4. Place vegetables, goat’s cheese, tomatoes, rocket and dressing in a large bowl, season, then toss to combine.5. Divide salad among shallow bowls, scatter with pine nuts then serve and enjoy!

Cranberry Apple PieIngredients • Serves 8 Pie1 refrigerated pie pastry2 cups apples, peeled, cored, and quartered2 cups fresh cranberries (thawed if frozen)2/3 cup sugar1 tablespoon lemon juice1 1/2 tablespoons flourCrumb Topping1/2 cup flour1/2 cup sugar1/4 teaspoon cinnamon4 tablespoons cold butter, cut into 1/4-inch piecesMethod1. Preheat oven to 200ºC. Line a 23 cm standard (not deep-dish) pie pan with the pastry, fluting the edge.2. Thinly slice the apples crosswise and combine them in a large bowl with the cranberries. Add the sugar, lemon juice, and flour, mixing well. Transfer the filling to the pie shell, smoothing the top of the fruit. Bake for 30 minutes.3. Meanwhile, in a large bowl, mix the flour, sugar, and cinnamon for the topping. Add the butter, rubbing it into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.4. After 30 minutes, remove the pie from the oven and reduce the temperature to 190ºC. Spread the topping over the pie and bake it for another 25 to 30 minutes, until the top is golden and the fruit thickens and bubbles around the edges. 5. Allow the pie to cool before serving.

Little Red Attracts Big CrowdsFamilies flocked to Mamre House in the January school holidays to

witness the ridiculous antics of Little Red Riding Hood, her brother Blue, Granny and of course Wolfgang the Wolf. This wacky version of the children’s classic tale was written by Glenmore Park resident Gabrielle DeCelis.

With witty rhymes, silly songs and twisted humour LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD entertained children and adults alike in the beautiful gardens of Mamre House.

One patron said “the wit and pace of the script was simply brilliant and a joy to watch” and, “Little Red Riding Hood certainly eclipsed the character and quirk you would find in any big smoke production”.

Audience members certainly enjoyed the fact that this original, locally produced show entertained on many different levels; the kids loved the crazy slapstick and the grown-ups appreciated the topical and sometimes satirical humour.

If you missed the January season of Little Red Riding Hood at Mamre House don’t despair. You can catch all the zany fun at the Norman Lindsay Gallery in Faulconbridge during the April school holidays!

This is a wonderful opportunity for children to experience live, interactive theatre in the lovely gardens of the Norman Lindsay Gallery. Families are encouraged to bring a picnic lunch to “wolf” down after the show.

25 – 28 April, 2013 Thursday 1pm only, Friday - Sunday 10.30am & 1pmTickets: $12 - Group of 6 only $60 – Kids under 2 years free.Bookings: 4751 1067Norman Lindsay Gallery, 14 Norman Lindsay Crescent, Faulconbridge

NOISEan exhibition of new music30 March – 23 June 2013 Free entry open daily 9-5pmExhibition Launch Sunday 7 April from 4pm

NOISE is a combined discipline exhibition which pushes the definition of ‘soundscape as art’ to include new musical compositions of any variety.

A select group of internationally renowned musicians have been invited into the Penrith Regional Gallery & The Lewers Bequest Collection to create an original composition or improvisation inspired by their chosen artwork. NOISE will showcase nine new compositions by Australian and international musicians from a wide range of genres – from opera to IDM, folk to neo-classical and industrial.

Featuring new work by Jim White (Dirty Three) & George Xylouris - Tom Ellard (Severed Heads; Jack Ladder - Io Echo - Eddie Muliaumaseali’I; Kirin J. Callinan & Daniel Stricker (Midnight Juggernauts); Castratii - Tim McPhee and Matthew Doyle.

The prestigious PRG&TLB Collection consists of contemporary and Indigenous artworks as well as examples of Modernism, Abstract Expressionism, Hard Edge Abstraction and Minimalism from the 1930s to 1970s, including work by Ralph Balson, Henry Salkauskas, Yvonne Audette and Peter Upward.

NOISE invites audiences to experience music in an intense and uncommon way: shifting the act of listening from its realm of concert halls, pubs, clubs, radio and digital devices and into a space normally associated with focused ‘viewing’.

THIS SPORTING LIFE

Swim Star to All Schools State TitlesNoah Cariolato from St Finbar’s, Glenbrook has had a sensational

swim season. He smashed 5 records at the Catholic Schools Zone Titles, earning the senior swimmer of the meet award. He then followed up just 3 days later at the Diocesan Trials with wins and places in all 7 events he competed in, again earning the swimmer of the meet title.

At the end of March, he swam at the Mackillop trials, winning the senior boys 200m Individual Medley in a blistering time of 2:42:77. He placed 2nd in the 100m freestyle, 2nd in the 50m freestyle and another 2nd in the 50m breaststroke, earning him a ticket to the All Schools State Titles in those events, in early April.

Six swim stars from Our Lady of the Way in Emu Plains also competed at the Mackillop trials. Justin Cooper, Hannah Ristevski, Keisha Chilmaid, Tully Brown, Laura Patterson, Alyssa Procter all swam personal bests on the day. Teacher Anne-Maree McKeon said she was delighted with each of their performances, and they were wonderful ambassadors for their school.

Three residents from the district will be represented in the Men’s team this year, including assistant coach Adam Peterson (Emu Plains), point guard Ben Wagenfeller (Glenbrook) and forward Emlyn Dodd (Glenbrook).

The Penrith Men’s team lost three senior players from 2012 but their replacements have already made their mark, with the Panthers convincingly winning each of their three pre-season games against the Hawkesbury Jets State League teams and the NSW Under 18 Men’s team.

Dodd has been a regular member of Penrith’s senior men’s team for a couple of years, whilst Wagenfeller is graduating from the Penrith Youth League team and promises to be a star of the future.

Rare Pieces Of NSW Fire Fighting History Awarded Heritage Listing

Five rare items from Penrith’s Museum of Fire – some dating backto the late19thcentury– receivedofficialStateHeritagelisting today, Heritage Minister Robyn Parker said.

Ms Parker made the announcement of the gazettal of the superbly restored links to NSW’s fire fighting history during a visit today to the Museum of Fire with the Member for Penrith Stuart Ayres.

Ms Parker said the listing offered recognition and protection for the items, pieces which played a significant role in the development of fire fighting techniques and technologies in NSW from the middle of the 19th century to the late 20th century.

“These tangible pieces of history, including a fire engine, ladders, canteen, switchboard and fleet of vehicles, offer a remarkable insight into the way in which NSW adapted to the new demands and challenges brought about by the growing and developing city of Sydney,” Ms Parker said. The State Heritage listed items are:• 1869ShandMason7-inchManualFireEngine• 1898ShandMasonCurricleLadders• 1942Ford21WMobileCanteen• EdwardSmithHeadquartersSwitchboard• FireandRescueHeritageFleet.Mr Ayres said the Penrith communitywelcomed the official
