It appears as if the entireRepublican Party has lostits mind. They are holding

up the business of the nationbecause they cannot get theirway. The remind me of littlechildren who want to takeaway their ball during a gamebecause they not set the rules. It is really silly.

People across the countryare hurting while this is taking

place and the Republicans in Congress do not seem to care. They will pay a heavy price during the next election. People aregoing to vote against them and they don't seem to care.

What is taking place in Washington is not aboutgovernment, it is about President Obama and the face that aman of color and his family is occupying the White House. Those who oppose him know it and the American peopleknow it too. It is a damn shame. I thought we had gotten passall of this.

Fortunately, the majority of the people in this countryunderstand what is taking place and they will not be fooled bya bunch of idiots who are lying to them. The Congressionalelections are right around the corner and the party with theElephant is going to pay a heavy price. They must understandthat government is not a circus!

A wise Decision

The recent decision toretain Dallassuperintendent Mike

Miles was a wise one, I believe.Yes, everything did not gosmoothly during the first partof his tenure, but he didpromise to "reset" hisrelationship with the schoolboard and perhaps he should begiven a chance.

The school board has the power to replace him if they sochoose, but I think the decision that was made was in the bestinterests of the children. Give them a chance to be educatedwithout disruptions taking place every time they look around.

The school board knew what they were getting when theyhired Mike Miles. He is a former military officer who isaccustomed to giving hard orders. Perhaps Mr. Miles did notknow what he was getting into when he took the job, but I amcertain that now he does.

After all, Mr. Miles and members of the school board are alladults and they can forgive one another for things that took placein the past. Even in a marriage sometimes things are said that onespouse did not intend to say, so they apologize and get on with it.That is what Mr. Miles and members of the school board need todo. They need to apologize and get on with it. That is best forthem and best for the children they are sworn to serve.

{ PRAYER CLOSET }

Do you live in an atmosphere of prayer? What ablessed privilege it is for God to give the believerthe wisdom to create an atmosphere of prayer.

The secret to that creativity is to be consistent and sincere, especially in prayer. Solomon, in the 3rd chapter ofEcclesiastics, list a lot of time that has its season; but hedidn’t include prayer as a time to start and cease. However,Jesus said to us, that men ought to always pray and notfaint. Consistent prayer will create a praying atmosphere.Acts 3:1 tells us that Peter and John went up together atthe hour of prayer. If we follow the event, we will seeclearly that consistent prayer brings about healing and

deliverance.

Willie Mae Kirk spoke at the library dedicationceremony for the newly renamed Willie Mae KirkBranch in 2012.

Willie Mae Kirk, a civil rights leaderand teacher who fought againstsegregation in Austin, died Saturday atage 92, her family said.

A teacher for 32 years, Kirkchampioned equal opportunities for herstudents in East Austin and helped leadprotests against segregation at Austinbusinesses, schools and Barton SpringsPool.

Kirk played an important role inAustin politics over the past five decades, beginning with efforts to repeal the poll tax and registerAfrican Americans to vote. Even late in life, she continuedto speak out about how minorities were treated in Austin, particularly in the wake of police shootings.

The youngest of her four children, Ron Kirk, waselected Dallas mayor, ran for U.S. Senate and was laterappointed the U.S. Trade Representative by PresidentBarack Obama.

Wilhelmina Delco, a former legislator and the firstAfrican-American elected official in Travis County, said Kirkunderstood that active engagement in politics was key to

ending discrimination.“That’s where we thought things had to change,” Delco

said. U.S. Rep. Lloyd Doggett, D-Austin, said Kirk helpedhim launch his political career withthe 1972 race for Texas Senate andcontinued offering advice throughlast year.

“Through the 40 years that Ihave been honored to know her, andbefore, her strength as a teacher anda leader for equal opportunity hasmade this a stronger and more justcommunity,” Doggett said in astatement. “And through theexample she set for her children, her

reach has extended around the world.”Last year, the city renamed an East Austin library in her

honor.“My first priority is my students, ” Kirk said at the time.

“Kids need to have a place where they can get any of theknowledge they need.”

Raised in Manor, Kirk attended college in Austin atwhat is now Huston-Tillotson University, where she met herfuture husband, Lee Kirk. He became the first African-American postal clerk in Austin and died in 1982.

{ NATIONAL REVIEW }Protecting our sacred heritage

Each day approximately 1.5million Americans engagein a battle with their own

bodies due to Lupus. Oftentimes this internal conflict isunknown to their families andfriends. Even though the diseasecan strike men and women of allages, 90 percent of its victims arefemale. What is even morealarming is that it affectsminority women two to threetimes as much as white women.

A recent survey revealed that nearly three-fourths of all Americans between the ages of18 and 34 have never heard of this disease, and ironically those who fall in that agebracket are at the highest risk. We must buildawareness about this chronic condition andsimultaneously work to increase funding forresearch to improve the diagnosis of thisdisease that disproportionally affectsminorities and women in the prime of theirlives.

The disease is Lupus-- an unpredictable andmisunderstood disease in which the immunesystem is out of balance, causing damage toany organ system in the body. Lupus canaffect any or all organs in the body includingthe skin, lungs, heart, joints, kidneys, andbrain. Common symptoms include jointpain, skin rashes, overwhelming fatigue andfevers that last for days or weeks.

Currently, there is no procedure thatdetermines whether or not a patient haslupus, and the disease often imitates otherillnesses making it challenging to diagnose. On average, it takes a person with lupusthree to four years and three doctors toreceive an accurate diagnosis. Researchers

have yet to discover thecause of Lupus and whileit does appear in certainfamilies, no gene or genegroup has been proven tocause this debilitatingdisease.

Treatment for lupus canbe very expensivebecause of its multi-faceted nature. Annually, lupus costs our nationabout $31.4 billion. The

annual cost for treatment for an individualwith lupus is an estimated $20,000. The costto treat an individual with lupus nephritis, kidney inflammation caused by lupus, couldbe as high as $62,000 per year.

Ultimately, extensive research is needed tobetter understand this disease and to discovereffective treatments. But without sufficientfunding, research into the cause of lupus andthe discovery of new treatments will bedelayed. Currently, there is only one FDAapproved drug to treat Lupus, but due to thevastness of the disease one drug cannot treatevery case. I am astutely aware of our currenteconomic conditions, but we cannot affordto make drastic cuts to funding for agencieslike the National Institutes of Health thatconduct valuable research leading to curesfor diseases like Lupus.

I have recently joined the CongressionalLupus Caucus, established so that membersof Congress can help increase awareness ofLupus and advance vital research. It is myhope that my colleagues and I can worktogether to find solutions to help facilitatescientific efforts to find a cure for thisdebilitating disease.

luPus: the silent War

The African American – Church hasbeen the nucleus of the communityfor ever in history. History records it

was either, the Colored Methodist First andThird Sunday and the Colored BaptistSecond and Fourth Sundays and combinedon the Fifth Sunday. So therefore, There Is ANeed To Protect Our Sacred Heritage.

It is disturbing to me that when I look atthe Texas Historic Commissions and theNational Trust Historic Preservation List ofDesignated Properties our Sacred History isnot listed there. It is now time that we moveforward and that we make the necessary stepsto get our Churches Designated andProtected from Demolition and UpcomingDevelopment.

The African American HistoricPreservation League was created in 2003 justto aid in the protection and the designationof our Rich Cultural Sacred Heritage. In1998 the Dallas County Historical ChurchAnd Cemetery Association was formedprotecting all Churches and all Cemeteries ofevery race – creed – color, but in doing so Ifound a desperate need to focus my attentionon my African American Sacred Heritage. SoI Prayed about it and Found the AfricanAmerican Historic Preservation League justto give you a little history of the

organization. I don’t turn anyone away, butmy new focus is on my own Sacred Heritage.Your continual support is appreciated.

There is a need to protect our SacredHeritage. There are three things that we do inorder to bring this needed action intofruition . 1. We must first create a list ofthose known Historical Churches, 2.Secondly, we must document and gather thehistorical data of proof, 3, Thirdly and finally, we must start the designation proceduresthrough the State of Texas. Through thisprocess we can create a directory which willfurther the awareness and bring furtherrecognition to our Sacred Heritage.

I need your support in my designationand preservation procedures and in thecreation of the First African AmericanHistoric Church Directory. If you have anyinformation, or need more information, orcan be support please call me at (214) 565-9026 Ext. 335 and make plans now to attendthe Annual African American HistoricChurch Conference – Saturday,October26,2013 at the African AmericanMuseum in Historic Fair Park.

Joshua 23:10-11"One man of youshall chase athousand. ForJehovah your Godis He who fights foryou, as He haspromised you. Andtake good heed toyourselves that youlove Jehovah your

God"

God can use you if you will let Him.Helen Keller said, “"I am only one,but still I am one. I cannot do

everything, but still I can do something; andbecause I cannot do everything, I will notrefuse to do something that I can do."Amen!

Often we are overwhelmed by a senseof personal insignificance. Often a personfeels like an expendable commodity. We feela sense of complete uselessness believing "Iam just one--and what can just one do?"Understand God can use you if you will letHim. Helen Keller said, “"I am only one,but still I am one. I cannot do everything, but still I can do something; and because Icannot do everything, I will not refuse to dosomething that I can do." ThroughoutScripture, we find example after example ofthe power of one.

One little Boy was instrumental infeeding 5000 John 6:9-13 says, "There is alad here who has five barley loaves and twosmall fish, but what are they among somany?" Then Jesus said, "Make the peoplesit down." Now there was much grass in theplace. So the men sat down, in numberabout five thousand. And Jesus took theloaves, and when He had given thanks Hedistributed them to the disciples, and thedisciples to those sitting down; and likewise

of the fish, as much as they wanted. Sowhen they were filled, He said to Hisdisciples, "Gather up the fragments thatremain, so that nothing is lost." Thereforethey gathered them up, and filled twelvebaskets with the fragments of the five barleyloaves which were left over by those whohad eaten. Amen!

God uses what you have to fill a need, which you never could have filled. God useswhere you are to take you where you nevercould have gone. God uses what you can doto accomplish what you never could havedone. God uses who you are to let youbecome who you never could have been."

It is not based on one’s ability but one’savailability. God uses those who makethemselves available to Him. He will useyou, if you make yourself available to him. That is the key. Are you making yourselfavailable to him?

Isaiah 6:8 says, “Also I heard the voiceof the Lord, saying: ’Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?’ Then I said, ’Heream I! Send me." Make yourself available toGod to do anything He asks of you, seekingnot the gifts, but the Giver. Amen!

One little Girl was instrumental inhealing a world military leader. 2nd Kings5:1-3 says, “Now Naaman, commander ofthe army of the king of Syria, was a greatand honorable man in the eyes of hismaster, because by him the Lord had givenvictory to Syria. He was also a mighty manof valor, but a leper. And the Syrians hadgone out on raids, and had brought backcaptive a young girl from the land of Israel.She waited on Naaman’s wife. { COVER STORY }

The City of Lancaster has made history with theannouncement of appointing the firstAfrican American Chief of Police,

Cheryl Wilson in the state of Texas. Yes,there are other women in the positionof Chief of Police, Houston and theUniversity of Texas in Arlington,UTA. Chief Elizabeth HerrmannWatson was appointed February 7,1990 as Houston’s Chief of Policeand Kim Lemaux was recentlyappointed as Chief of Police to UTAbut Chief Wilson is the first andonly African American female Chiefof Police in this state.

The city of Lancaster is in for atreat. Chief Wilson will serve and leadthe protection of one of the largestblack majority city in thestate. As of the last censusreports Lancaster has a 69%black population. Whentalking with Chief Wilson itdoes not take long to know

that she is a lady on a mission. A mission to showthose that look up to her and the

community that she is serving that shewill be leading with respect andfairness.

It will not be surprisingto see Chief Wilson out in thecommunity getting to knowthe people and allowingthem to know her. When asked whatkind of approach she will use inmanaging she is proud to say shewill have a “Hands On” approach;one that is predictable when itcomes to customer service andcommunity service. A leader byexample with check and balances setin place to make sure there are

predictable expectations for boththose she is managing and thecommunity she is in place toserve.

To know Chief Wilsonis to know that she is no

nonsense at work and at home. She is the oldest of 7 who has raiseda 26 year old daughter and raisingan 18 year old son. She is confidentand competent in all that she setsout to do. Mediocrity is not a termshe accepts from herself and notfrom others. When talking with her and getting

to know her she shared that “when others are sleeping I amnot. When others are eating I probably am not.” In a maledominated job she is one that others will need to look up to.One that will get the job done while standing firm and tall.

After receiving her Bachelor of Science in CriminalJustice and her Masters of Arts in Professional Developmentfrom Dallas Baptist University she went on to attend theFBI National Academy and FBI Executive FellowshipProgram. Chief Wilson served 13 years in the US ArmyNational Guard before working with the Dallas CountySheriff where she was promoted to the ranks of AssistantChief Deputy.

The city of Lancaster will confirm Chief Cheryl Wilsonofficially at the October 28th City Council meeting.

{ THAT’S LEGAL }

Dallas Judge Lena Levario has got to go. Rememberthe judge who told a county employee she wantedto serve District Attorney Craig Watkins up

on a silver platter? That’s her – Lena Levario.Remember her name; because, it’s a shame that thisDemocratic judge lost her way so badly that it took aRepublican judge to clear Mr. Watkins’ name.

Let’s back up. First Judge Levario demanded toknow why the Dallas County District Attorney’s officeindicted a rich white man for mortgage fraud. What’sinteresting is DA Watkins has never had to explain anyof the thousands of indictments he seeks each year, butJudge Levario made an unprecedented move when shesubpoenaed Mr. Watkins to the stand like a criminaland ordered him to explain his actions. Watkins’prosecutors presented Levario with evidence ofmortgage fraud to try to quash the matter, but Levarioacted in what can be interpreted as a vengeful way andtold DA Watkins he’d better answer the questions.Watkins told the judge he had a work productprivilege and refused to answer questions. JudgeLevario might as well have called him “boy”, but boy didshe do the unthinkable – holding the District Attorney, thetop lawyer in the county, in contempt of court where hefaced jail time.

So, DA Craig Watkins, the man known for freeing the

innocent, found himself in need of exoneration for a crimehe did not commit. Now, let’s fast forward to Republican

Judge Robert Brothertonof Wichita Falls, Texaswho ironically saved theday. During a motion todismiss the contemptcharge, Judge Brothertonmight as well have ruledthat Judge Levario hadlost her mind! JudgeBrotherton said the factsand the law showed:

1. No hearing ever shouldhave been held byLevario as to why DAWatkins indicted AlHill III – a wealthymember of the Huntfamily

2. The subpoena Levarioissued for DA Watkins tocome testify was improper

3. DA Watkins did not waive his privilege by taking thewitness stand

4. DA Watkins’ refusal to answer questions was notcontemptuous

5. DA Watkins was found Not Guilty

This was just plain embarrassing for Judge Lena Levarioand begs the question…WHY? Why would DemocraticJudge Levario hold an improper hearing and hold DAWatkins in contempt of court? She looked as if she waseither ignorant of the law or blatantly biased. It appears JillReese, a former county employee who testified under oaththat Levario said ‘Mr. Watkins would see the walls of a jailcell’ was telling the truth that this was a judge with a grudge. We thank Mrs. Reese for pulling Judge Lena Levario’s hoodoff, so we could see her true colors. That’s why we need toshow ours and get out the black vote. Vote NO to Levarioand YES to her opponent, Tammy Kemp, who is a longstanding member of Concord Missionary Baptist Church.

Kemp is OK in our book for judge. She has been a partof DA Watkins’ administration for six years and oversees theFamily Violence and Child Abuse unit. She worked underboth John Vance and Bill Hill. Tammy Kemp put awayNaim Muhammad for drowning his two young sons. Kempis the lady who worked out a deal with Dez Bryant when heand his mama had drama. Well, we are done with the dramawith Judge Levario who tried to put DA Watkins in jail.Let’s put her in a time out – for Good!

The U.S. Federal government furloughed nearly800,000 non-essential employees starting October 1for the first time in almost 17 years. No work, no

pay. The shutdown came due to Congress’ inability to act ona budget or continuing resolution that would fund thegovernment for the 2014 fiscal year. A continuingresolution allows congress to fund government agencies if aformal appropriations bill has not been signed into law bythe end of the Congressional fiscal year. That year’s end was September 30.

The House led by Republican Speaker John Boehnerrefuses to pass a budget that does not defund or delayimplementation of the Patient Protection and AffordableCare Act, better known as Obamacare. The majority ofDemocrats do not support this position. The Democraticcontrolled Senate led by Majority Leader Harry Reid passeda bill that would have kept the government running untilNovember 15 but stripped the measure that would havedelayed or defunded the healthcare provision. And since thetwo chambers could not agree on a spending bill bymidnight September 30, non-essential departments closeddown. President Obama had vowed to veto any legislationthat would change Obamacare in its current form. But inreality the budget drama and the eventual governmentshutdown, had absolutely no impact of the funding orimplementation of Obamacare. The open enrollment of the uninsured obtaining healthcare

insurance began on October 1as scheduled.

The military willcontinue operations underlegislation signed by PresidentObama last week. Essentialgovernment employees thatwill not be affected by theshutdown include air trafficcontrollers, the Social SecurityAdministration, U. S. VeteransAffairs and the United Postal

Service. Some non-essential agencies that will be shutdownor operating on a shoe string budge will be National Parks, the Center for Disease Control Prevention, Department ofCommerce, Department of Defense, Heath and HumanServices, Energy, Homeland Security, HUD, IRS, EPA andmany more. President Obama estimates that the Federalgovernment shutdown will cost the already fragile U.S.economy 1Billion dollars a week.

Speaking of Obamacare, on its official rollout day ofOctober 1 millions of people searched the Internet to getmore information on this mandated law. But still manymore remain uninformed about it. Be reminded thatObamacare is the law of the land. Every man, woman andchild who not currently covered through their employer,VA, Medicare, Medicaid, self-insured or who has not soughtan exemption must obtain health insurance or be penalized.

The 2014 penalty is 95$ per adult and $47.50 per childor 1% of your annual salary.

The fee will increase every year. The open enrolment date in the Marketplace began onOctober 1 and will continue through March 31, 2014. Ifyou enroll by December 15, 2013, your coverage will beganon January 1, 2014. If you do not enroll by March 31,2014, you will not be able to do so until the next enrollmentperiod during calendar year unless they have what is referredto as “a qualifying life event”. If you do not have healthinsurance as mandated by law, you will still be responsiblefor 100% of your healthcare medical bills.

The Marketplace offers insurance plans in fourcategories: Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum. Each planrequires a monthly premium and may require you to payout-of-pocket for services for the services you receive. Thelevel of care you choose will determine your premium costand your out-of-pocket expenses. But what you pay shouldnot determine the quality of healthcare you receive.

Remember Obamacare is a requirement, not an option. And while Washington spirals in gridlock, voters mustconsider if the representative they elect in those positions areoperating in their best interest or their own.To quote Albert Einstein, “the definition of insanity is doingsomething over and over again and expecting a differentresult.” Lets change Washington from the inside out.Barbara Mallory Caraway served six years in the Texas House ofRepresentatives and eight years as a member of the Dallas City Council.

{ RON WASHINGTON SHOULD BE REWARDED}

When the Cowboyssigned Deion Sanders, Ithink they sealed their

fate forever. They won their fifthSuper Bowl but they or owner JerryJones let a cancer into the lockerroom that’s still there.

While working at KLIF, Iattended every training camp andevery practice, and I have yet to seeDeion Sanders practice at training

camp. He would ride around on what he called a $30,000golf cart sometimes he would even have his kids ridingwith him. I think Deion thought he was too good topractice in front of Joe Q Public free. The Cowboys wascoming off 2 back to back Super bowl wins.

Prior to that season, Jimmie Johnson had a no nonsense policy. Everybody practiced, “you can’t make theclub in the tub.” Some of the Cowboys top players I’msure didn’t like the fact that Deion coming in and didn’thave to face that 110 degree temp in pads, so they startedriding around in practice, thus the beginning of the tubclub. And it seems like it grows every year. Emmitt wouldride around all camp then Larry Allen etc.

As a result the Cowboy never got in the condition

that championship teams got in. The Philadelphia Eaglecame into a blistering hot Texas Stadium, and put a goodole fashion whipping on the Cowboys, and made biggerfun at the Cowboys by saying they drank pickle juice toget ready for the heat. The Eagle practice in Pennsylvaniathe Cowboys in Wichita Falls, and they tell you it waspickle juice.

There’s a big group of guys in the league that believesif you play hard for Jerry Jones he will pay. That’s a goodthing. Jerry should make some changes to that, that readsif you don’t play hard Jerry will cut you. Jerry gets arelationship with these guys and there’s no limit to thethings they can get away with. Just like Emmitt andMichael and the rest of the Boyz thought if Deion canride cart all practice I can too. Well today’s team feels thatif Matt Harrison Can ride the Injured reserve list for2years, Jay Ratliff can go 2 years and not play there is nourgency on this team. If they can do without players for 2years it’s not imperative that I go all out to make a tackleor catch a pass. Matt Harrison hasn’t played not one downof regular season football and he’s been on roster 2 years.

General George Patton got a soldier out of thehospital and made him fight, what do you think he woulddo to Jay Ratliff, Miles Austin, these guys realize on payday it’s professional football, but on Sunday they think it’sBe careful out there fellows.’I said last year if the Cowboyscut Felix Jones and Miles Austin that would scare theteam into some type urgency. It’ll work this year cutAustin, Harrison and Ratliff.

The NFL has really turnedinto a pass happy league inthe pass few years. The

running game has really taken aback seat to the passing game. Inthis years NFL the running backhas to be able to run the ball, blockfor the quarterback, and he must beable to catch the ball out of thebackfield. But the key to this yearsNFL is the passing attack. This years NFL season is all aboutthe QB and man these player arenot disappointing anybody. Here is my list of the top 5quarterbacks in the NFL 2013-14

Peyton Manning Denver: Manning has been playing flawless so far this season. Inthe first four games Manning has passed for 16touchdowns and zero interceptions on 156 attempts.Manning is also completing 75 percents of his attempts.According to Pro Football Focus, Manning’s widereceivers, tight ends and running backs have dropped 14of his passes. Manning has 16 Touchdowns passes, zerointerception, and 1,470 yards and a 138.0 passer rating.

Drew Brees-New Orleans:

While Manning is receiving a lot of attention Drew Breesis still doing his thing. All Brees has done s throw for1.4343 yards with 10 touchdowns and four interceptions, while completing 67 percent of his passes. Brees put on aclinic on Monday Night against the Dolphins completing30- of- 39 for 413 yards, 4 touchdowns and nointerceptions.

Tom Brady -New England: Tom terrific is at it again. Brady worked through somemajor kinks in early September, but he has hit his stride.Brady has over 1,000 yards with 7 Touchdowns and 2interceptions.

Russell Wilson Seattle: Russell Wilson hasn't shredded the teams he has faced sofar this season, but his leadership is far beyond his years. On Sunday down 20-3 at halftime, Wilson led a supercomeback that included a 14-play, 75- yard touchdowndrive that brought his team within one score in the fourthquarter. The Seahawks defense played super in the secondhalf against the Texans, but Wilson's decision- makingand elusiveness outside the pocket was huge in the victory.

These are the QB's that are playing the best football so farthis season. Let's just keep in mind it's only the firstquarter of the season.

Thanks for Reading!!May God Bless You and Help Us Change the World!!Mark A Toliver II

For the first time in four years, theRangers won’t be taking part inthe American League playoffs.

But don’t blame Rangers’ managerRon Washington for that failure. As a matter of fact, this may well havebeen Wash’s best performance during

his seven-year tenure as the Rangers’ boss.Considering what he had to work with and what he

had to overcome this season, it was a remarkable feat thathis team won more than 90 games, and forced a one-game playoff with the Tampa Bay Rays for the last wildcard spot. Indeed.

If there is any blame to go around for this season, itshould start and end with general manager Jon Daniels. He did very little in the off-season despite losing threemain cogs – Josh Hamilton, Michael Young and MikeNapoli – from the offense. And he did nothing to fortifya pitching staff that had no ace to start the season.

“Considering what he had to work with before theseason even started, I thought this team would be thesecond or third best team…in their own division (theAmerican League West),’’ said Hall of Famer Joe Morgan.“They needed an ace, despite the fact that Yu Darvishwas around. And they also needed a thumper in themiddle of the lineup. They failed on both of thoseoccasions, but somehow had the same expectations goinginto the season.

“So, they never replaced any of the power that theylost. On top of that, they also lost the one big power batthey had in Nelson Cruz for the last 50 games. But theystill somehow managed to win more than 90 games toforce a one-game do-or-die situation against Tampa Bay.Needless to say, I think Ron did an outstanding job whenyou look at all of the factors.’’

The Rangers only got two starts from opening-daypitcher Matt Harrison. Colby Lewis, the projected No. 3man in the pitching rotation, never threw a single pitchfor the major league club. On top of that, the rest of thestaff was besieged with injuries, which forced Wash to goalong with three rookie pitchers in the rotation at times.“I never complain about what we don’t have,’’ Wash said.”I just have to go out there and make it happen with theguys that are ready to go. Injuries are a part of the game,so there is no use complaining about them.We didn’t let that become an excuse for what we couldn’tdo.”

“You just have to make due with what you got. Wejust kept on fighting and battling no matter what thesituation. As long as we took the right mental approachand the right attitude, we felt like we could keep thingsmoving in a positive direction.’’ That he did.

Even the moves that Daniels made at the tradedeadline to bring in veteran pitcher Matt Garza and rightfielder Alex Rios, proved to only be marginal at best.

graMBling state university Once again, there was no ‘wow’ move made.Despite that fact, the Rangers kept pluggingalong because their manager refused to letthem give up on the season that sometimesappeared to be a lost cause.

And now that it has concluded, Washshould be rewarded with a three-yearextension. It’s absolutely incredible thatWash is entering the last year of his contractwith the Rangers.

During the season, Wash became theall-time winningest manager in franchisehistory. And let us not forget that he hastaken them to two World Series. As a matterof fact, the Rangers had never even won aplayoff series before Wash’s arrival. And ineach of his first six seasons, they increasedtheir victory total from the previous season, which was the first time that had occurred inMLB since the mid-70s.

Meanwhile, just this week, other lesssuccessful managers such as Ron Gardenhireand Terry Collins have been awardedextensions. Despite three consecutive seasonsof 95 of more losses, Gardenhire was given a

two-year extension by Minnesota, andCollins got two more years from the NewYork Mets despite not having a winningseason there in three years. And on top ofthat, Wash is the second lowest-paidmanager in Major League Baseball(Houston’s Bo Porter is at the bottom).

Does this sound like a man who shouldbe begging to keep his job? No way…nohow!

”We battled and fought through theseason,’’ Wash said. “We went out there andscratched and clawed for everything we got.We just came up a little short in the end. I’mproud of the way this team played baseballthis season. I never gave up on them and Ithought we had a chance to the end.’’

Now it’s time for the Rangers to do theright thing and give Wash a new deal so thathe can continue to go about the task of oneday bringing a championship team toArlington.

Maybe, Daniels can at least get thatright after all of his other failures this season.

There are two special events that tookplace in 1961 and both made history. On August 4, 1961, the first Black

President of the United States, Barack Obamawas born, and four months later on Dec 16,1961, Hamilton Park High School capturedthe title as “Class A Division Texas StateChampions”. In 1961, desegregation ofpublic schools in Texas had not takenplace and many Texas black highschool sports programs includingstate football championships, wereunder UIL connections managedunder the largest black college inTexas known at the time as PrairieView A&M College of Texas.

Richardson Independent SchoolDistrict’s only African Americanschool located in Dallas, HamiltonPark, grades 1 thru 12 was completed in 1955and several of the faculty and staff weregraduates of Prairie View A&M Collegewhich was later re-named Prairie View A&MUniversity. A tight knit community of 750homes where faculty and teachers not onlytaught at Hamilton Park School, but lived inthe community as well.

The former students of Hamilton Parkunderstand what it means to bea” Bobcat”. Richard Bonnerwho played on the 1961championship team as an insidelinebacker for the HamiltonPark Bobcats and whose brother,Dr. Harold S. Bonner served asinterim president of Prairie ViewA&M University, during the90’s, recalls; “I was a sophomorein 1961, the previous year wemade it all the way to the StateChampionship in 1960 and lost, but we came back in “61 andtook the title.” Bonnerremembers traveling to Sweeny,Texas with his teammates and defeating theWildcats of Carver High School to win thestate championship.

The game trophy, known too many inHamilton Park as the “Golden Football” is inscripted with the words; Prairie View A&M,Class A, State Champions, 1961. Bonner isshown in a recent photograph with the gametrophy along side of the late Head Coach andformer Principal of Hamilton Park School,Mr. James O. Griffin.

For many, the history of Hamilton Parkdates back to civil rights and education ofAfrican Americans across the country. The neighborhood streets of Hamilton Park

are named after famous African Americanactors, and places and serves as a reminder ofthose that paved the way for many blacks fora better quality of life and education. Suchnames as Ebony, Bellafonte Drive,Campanella Drive, and Bunche are all part ofblack history. The neighborhood post office named after

the HP community leader andPrairie View graduate, the lateDr. Robert E. Price.

Hamilton Park’s historicconnection to black colleges isevident when entering the mainentrance of the neighborhoodand one of the first streets visibleis Oberlin Drive. In 1844,Oberlin College graduated itsfirst black student, George B.

Vashon, who became one of the foundingprofessors at Howard University [8] and thefirst black lawyer admitted to the Bar in NewYork State.

Former Dallas Cowboy and a 1981graduate of Grambling State University,Everson (Cubby) Walls, and Gwen BarrettJackson, a 1981 graduate of Prairie ViewA&M University, both are former students of

Hamilton Park School.Mrs. Jackson grew up onDandridge Drive, namedafter actress DorothyDandridge, but Jackson norWalls never got the chanceto attend high school atHamilton Park, and bothremember howdesegregation and busingforced the closure of theirneighborhood high schoolto what is known now asHamilton Park PacesettersMagnet, grades K thru 6.“In the beginning I felt

cheated, explained Jackson, I remember ingrade school during football season, eachhomecoming the high school band, floats, convertible cars, homecoming queens, allparticipated in the homecoming parade, marching through the streets of HamiltonPark with the entire neighborhood cheeringand watching.

Once I got to Prairie View, it was then Irealized, I don’t think I was cheated at all, theexperience was only delayed, it felt as thoughI picked up where I left off, only at a muchhigher level.” Jackson is the third youngest ofseven children, whose eldest brother was amember of the HP Bobcat Football team

from 1960-61. A member of the HamiltonPark School Wide Reunion Committee, Ms.Jackson served as the first Scholarship Chair ofthe School Wide Reunion.

The first scholarship of Hamilton Parkwas awarded to a student to attend Prairie ViewA&M University. As the years followed ascholarship was awarded for a student to attendGrambling State University and otheruniversities were soon added”.
