Dear Homeowners, It is April 2017. As the saying goes, April showers will bring May flowers and hopefully some warmer weather. Maintenance activity around the community will continue. In this newsletter we cover the April maintenance events: The HOA Board has designated the 6 issues below as being the highest maintenance priorities:

Fountains: The landscape architect has completed the updated drawings of the replacement of the 3 fountains. The next step will be for CAMCO to create a Request for Proposal (RFP) to be sent out for bid.

Drainage: On Thursday, March 30th

work began on recommendation from Roux (drainage engineer) on the Area1 drainage modification plan in the former flood zone area. Also, in helping to resolve the drainage issue in our community, as a first step, we are looking into correcting irrigation over watering. This effort is expected to start in late April when the sprinkler system is brought online.

Homeowner Work Orders: CAMCO is working through the open requests but as mentioned previously, if it is an emergency or safety issue, Camco will move forward. Anything else would require HOA Treasurer’s approval.

Landscaping: AMC began spring cleanup the week of March 27th

. Please continue taking inventory of any damage to your property that was caused by snow removal and report any damage to CAMCO.

Clubhouse Interior: The HOA Board of Directors will be using Diane Bianchini of Dream Windows and Interiors. The contract is just about completed and the first phase of the project will be the design and creation of a storyboard. More updates to come as we move forward with this project.

Reserve Study: The HOA Board of Directors will be using Reserve Advisors. They have been onsite to review the community and we expect the initial draft of their reserve study by end of April.

The following items are being prioritized as to when work can begin:

Homeowner Walkway Repair: Michael Marinacci has spoken with Drew (CAMCO) about making this project a priority and about working with Mel Rubenstein to determine which product will be used for this repair.

Expansion Joint Repairs: : Michael Marinacci has spoken with Drew (CAMCO) about making this project a priority also, and about working with Mel Rubenstein on aligning this project with walkway repairs.

Gym: The HOA Board will continue to look at options for upgrading the Clubhouse gym equipment. This initiative will be aligned with the Clubhouse interior design decision.

Install New Concrete Between Paver & Belgian Block in Front of Clubhouse: Drew (Camco) will be acquiring bids for this project for HOA Board of Directors review.

Power Wash Units & Sidewalks: Michael Marinacci has asked Drew (CAMCO) to start acquiring bids for HOA Board of Directors review. Expectation of start date will be late May after the pollen starts to let up.

Mail Box Brick Repairs (14): Drew (CAMCO) will be acquiring bids for this project for HOA Board of Directors review.

Sincerely, Your EAS HOA Board of Directors

LIFESTYLE CORNER by Kathy Simos

This 75-Year Harvard Study Found the One

Secret to Leading a Fulfilling Life Here's some wisdom gleaned from one of the longest longitudinal studies ever conducted.

Prioritizing what's important is challenging in today's world. The split focus required to maintain a career and a home, not to mention a Facebook feed, can feel overwhelming. Enter the science of what to prioritize, when. For over 75 years, Harvard's Grant and Glueck study has tracked the physical and emotional well-being of two populations: 456 poor men growing up in Boston from 1939 to 2014 (the Grant Study), and 268 male graduates from Harvard's classes of 1939-1944 (the Glueck study). Due to the length of the research period, this has required multiple generations of researchers. Since before WWII, they've diligently analyzed blood samples, conducted brain scans (once they became available), and pored over self-reported surveys, as well as actual interactions with these men, to compile the findings. The conclusion? According to Robert Waldinger, director of the Harvard Study of Adult Development, one thing surpasses all the rest in terms of importance: "The clearest message that we get from this 75-year study is this: Good relationships keep us happier and healthier. Period." Not how much is in your 401(k). Not how many conferences you spoke at--or keynoted. Not how many blog posts you wrote or how many followers you had or how many tech companies you worked for or how much power you wielded there or how much you vested at each. No, the biggest predictor of your happiness and fulfillment overall in life is, basically, love. Specifically, the study demonstrates that having someone to rely on helps your nervous system relax, helps your brain stay healthier for longer, and reduces both emotional as well as physical pain.

The data is also very clear that those who feel lonely are more likely to see their physical health decline earlier and die younger. "It's not just the number of friends you have, and it's not whether or not you're in a committed relationship," says Waldinger. "It's the quality of your close relationships that matters." What that means is this: It doesn't matter whether you have a huge group of friends and go out every weekend or if you're in a "perfect" romantic relationship (as if those exist). It's the quality of the relationships--how much vulnerability and depth exists within them; how safe you feel sharing with one another; the extent to which you can relax and be seen for who you truly are, and truly see another. According to George Vaillant, the Harvard psychiatrist who directed the study from 1972 to 2004, there are two foundational elements to this: "One is love. The other is finding a way of coping with life that does not push love away." Thus, if you've found love (in the form of a relationship, let's say) but you undergo a trauma like losing a job, losing a parent, or losing a child, and you don't deal with that trauma, you could end up "coping" in a way that pushes love away. This is a very good reminder to prioritize not only connection but your own capacity to process emotions and stress. If you're struggling, get a good therapist. Join a support group. Invest in a workshop. Get a grief counselor. Take personal growth seriously so you are available for connection. Because the data is clear that, in the end, you could have all the money you've ever wanted, a successful career, and be in good physical health, but without loving relationships, you won't be happy. The next time you're scrolling through Facebook instead of being present at the table with your significant other, or you're considering staying late at the office instead of getting together with your close friend, or you catch yourself working on a Saturday instead of going to the farmer's market with your sister, consider making a different choice. "Relationships are messy and they're complicated," acknowledges Waldinger. But he's adamant in his research-backed assessment: "The good life is built with good relationships." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8KkKuTCFvzI

OUTREACH COMMITTEE CORNER by Linda Merola

Many thanks to the Encore Community for your generous donations of food items which were delivered to a local food pantry. Food pantries usually receive generous donations during the holidays, but the need is even more acute over the winter. Ida Schouten; her grandson, Chris; Bill Krauss; Joe Lanci and Lou Merola--thank you for your assistance in delivering the food. As always, thank you to the Clubhouse staff for their help. We will be accepting empty, clean prescription pill bottles (labels removed) only until the end of April. During the past year we have collected 100's of bottles which are sent to developing countries so that patients do not have to carry medication in their hands. If anyone would like to introduce this project to an organization outside of Encore, please see Nancy Cappiello or Linda Merola for contact information. Many thanks to Nancy for taking the lead on this project. Our hotel-size toiletries collection is ongoing throughout the year. Items are usually brought to Maureen's Haven, an organization which assists the local homeless. At our April 19th meeting, at 7 pm, Committee members will be presenting detailed information on Ronald McDonald's Dinner Program, Totes for Tots, First Book Long Island, and possible donations of small luggage to Maureen's Haven. All are welcome!

TECHNOLOGY CORNER By Linda Merola

You may have noticed that I take pictures of Encore events. You may also wonder what happens to these photos. One place to find them is in the albums which are usually on the coffee table in the Clubhouse living room. Another place to view them is on Encore's web page (www.encoreatlanticshoreshoa.com) under the tab "Photo Gallery." Pictures from the current year are posted there. They are "thumbnail" prints; you have to click on the picture to enlarge it for the full view. You can then click on the right or left side of each picture to move forward or backward through the gallery. If the pictures do not load right away, click on a blank area and they should load. If you would like me to email you a copy of any photo, give me the event, date and description of the photo. ([email protected]). You can still view pictures from all years in the albums in the Clubhouse living room.

WHAT’S FOR DINNER? Tofu Parmesan

Someone gave me this recipe years ago, and to this day it remains one of my son’s favorite dishes. Ingredients: 16 oz. Extra firm tofu sliced in to 10-12 slices ¾ Cup pancake mix 1 ½ Cups water Grated parmesan cheese Bread Crumbs Tomato Sauce Cooking oil spray Combine the pancake mix and water. Dip the tofu slices into the pancake batter and then bread crumbs. Layer in a lightly oiled casserole dish using the tomato sauce and the grated cheese. Bake uncovered 20 minutes at 400 degrees or until lightly browned. Can be served with pasta and extra tomato sauce.

Springtime Peas This recipe is a favorite of mine for the holidays. It also makes a nice side dish for the Tofu Parmesan. Ingredients: 3-6 Iceberg or Romaine lettuce leaves 2 Cups peas or 1 10 oz. package of frozen peas 1/4 Cup sliced green onion 1 Teaspoon sugar Dash pepper ½ Teaspoon Salt Thyme 1 Tablespoon butter or margarine Moisten the lettuce leaves, leaving some drops of water to clinging. Line bottom of a 10 inch skillet with the moist lettuce leaves. Top with peas and onion. Sprinkle with sugar, salt, pepper, and thyme. Cover and cook over low heat 18-20 minutes or until peas are tender. Remove and discard lettuce. Drain peas well and dot with butter. Better Homes and Gardens Cook Book
