In the early 1980s, with the industry recovering from the 1970s oil crisis and
the commissioning of new nuclear plants, technology was pursued to cycle
large fossil units down to low loads. The technical limitation of large coal units
being restricted to 30-40 percent load without additional fuel for flame stability
was one of the necessary topics to be addressed.
The objective was maintaining combustion stability while minimizing
secondary fuel costs.
Traditional igniter technology has been to use fuel oil as the primary fuel for

the igniter. The use of fuel oil for start up and stability is costly and causes
detrimental impacts to the plant air quality control equipment. The particulate
soot from igniter fuel oil combustion causes energization issues in
electrostatic precipitators, blinding and fire hazards in fabric filters, and
possible contamination and operational issues in wet FGD systems.
The Plasma Ignition Technology eliminates the fuel oil cost and environmental
issues, and as compared to natural gas, uses a readily available fuel source
at the coal-fired plant.

ignition system, has installed and operating
experience in helping coal plants reduce
costs and provide operating flexibility.
What is Plasma?
The plasma formation occurs by controlled generation
of an electrical discharge (arc) between two electrodes.
The passage of the air through and around the electric
arc causes it to become partially ionized and very hot.
An average temperature of 3,000°C would be typical.
The hot air forms high velocity luminous jet from the
anode, which is termed as plasma. It has a similar
appearance to a gas flame.

The plasma is not a product of combustion but the
energized ionized air.
The position of both the anode and cathode are
controlled to optimum position for plasma quality and
extending electrode life.

Plasma igniter is mainly composed of anode, cathode,
ignition devices and other components. The rear of the
igniter is equipped with working medium gas, cooling water,
water-cooled cables and control circuit interface.
