May 13, 2016 Bourns College of Engineering University of California, Riverside 900 University Avenue Riverside, CA 92521 Dear BCOE Awards Committee: I would like to preface this letter with a brief overview of Engineers Without Borders (EWB)-USA. EWB is a non-profit organization that originated in 2000 at the University of Colorado, Boulder. The founder of EWB, Dr. Bernard Amadei, created EWB to “connect a developing community that has a specific infrastructure need to engineers who can partner with the community to design a sustainable solution” (EWB-USA). EWB strives to help both domestic and international communities meet their basic human needs through cost-effective, sustainable projects. This academic year, the characteristics that make EWB at UCR unique were humility and diversity. EWB at UCR recognizes that we are privileged to live in the United States where higher education and healthier living conditions are more accessible than in third world countries. With this privilege comes a sense of duty that we utilize our knowledge and skills for the greater good. In Bourns College of Engineering, students are constantly taught that the best success comes from working with a multidisciplinary team. Our organization’s name, leaders, and activities show that we do not focus on a specific engineering major, but we encourage all people regardless of gender, religion, or background. This year we were pleased to secure our first International Project which has become the driving force for the organization’s success. The awards that are suitable for this academic year for EWB at UCR are Most Competitive, Most Improved, and Most Collaborative. Our goal for the 2015-2016 academic year was to collaborate and foster relationships within the BCOE community and firmly establish ourselves as a diverse and multidisciplinary organization at UCR. The chapter’s success can be attributed to the dedicated officers and members that have become part of the EWB family. This year we hosted more professional development events, socials, fundraisers and outreach events that have further embodied the organization compared to previous years. In the upcoming year, we hope to continue our projects and events and travel to Bohol, Philippines for our international project. I can truly say that I am proud of the events that were hosted by EWB at UCR this year, and I see great promise for the years to come. Sincerely, Julianne Rolf President 2015-2016 Engineers Without Borders

Club History Engineers Without Borders at UC Riverside was founded in 2008 by Breanna Bornemann.

Although there were successful events in the past, transferred records of events have not been maintained until the previous academic year under the presidency of Nolan Fan. Based on previous officer information, we know that several events occurred between 2010 and 2013. In 2010 and 2011, EWB at UCR partnered with its sister chapters, Cal Poly Pomona Student and Inland Empire Professional, to travel to San Lorenzo, Guatemala to design and construct a water tank and water distribution system. In 2011, EWB helped construct the first prototype of a thermal solar collector that won a $15,000 grant at the EPA P3 (People, Prosperity, and the Planet) Design Competition. EWB also worked with AIChE to design and construct a solar cooker and start the desalination project. At the 2011 BCOE Banquet, EWB received the Most Improved Organization award. In 2012, EWB partnered with American Society of Civil Engineers professional chapter to volunteer at the Riverside Arts Museum as well as attend the EWB West Coast Conference to socialize with student and professional chapters and attend workshops on EWB’s missions and plans. From 2014-2015, EWB at UCR built a stable infrastructure from its lack of transition from the 2011-2012 to the 2012-2013 board. Involvement with BCOE faculty and its academic advisor, Dr. Kawai Tam allowed for a wide variety of professional development events, which helped stabilize the chapter as a whole. Membership increased, and we were awarded the Best T-shirt Design at the 2014 BCOE Banquet.

Today, EWB at UCR has maintained this stable infrastructure and continued its growth as a multidisciplinary and prominent organization in BCOE and EWB-USA. This year, the focus of the organization was to develop our projects and collaborations with other organizations, while maintaining the same level of professional development, social, fundraiser, and outreach events that were displayed in the previous year. The Gazebo and Compost Toilet Project at the UCR community garden has received a large amount of students from EWB and Tau Beta Pi (TBP) that have volunteered to build and complete the projects. EWB collaborated with Material Research Society (MRS) to receive grants to build a solar cell. The Microbial Fuel Cell project was also reestablished as a EWB project and parts have been purchased to build our final prototype. Our main focus was our International Project in Bohol, Philippines. After a typhoon hit the island Bohol, new and sustainable methods became necessary to rebuild homes that were destroyed. EWB at UCR currently works with the Husk-to-Home design team to develop a particle board that would be used as sustainable building material. EWB and the design team have fundraised a total of over $30,000 through grant applications and competition events to go towards travel expenses and future research. Outreach events with GRID Alternatives, MESA, and Habitat for Humanity have continued to inspire our members to reach out and make a meaningful difference in the Riverside community. Last year EWB at UCR had the privilege to being invited to attend and speak at the Annual Symposium at UC Davis and had the honor of hosting the EWB First Annual Spring Beach Social with the southern California EWB chapters. EWB has always been a multidisciplinary organization and many steps were taken to foster relationships with engineering majors and disciplines. To help promote these relationships many socials and outreach events with AIChE, SWE, MRS, SHPE, ASME, BMES and TBP were created, such as BBQ socials and our first annual BCOE Trivia Night. We have hosted professional event with Shah Selbe, the former President of EWB-LA Professional and an employee at Boeing and National Geographic who received the Young Alumnus Award for his achievements. We have also opened our professional events to be co-hosted with BMES, TBP, MRS, and AIChE hosting Fisher & Paykel, LA Sanitation, EPA, SoCalGas, and the Second Annual Research Fair. We hope to continue our growth and partake in our first international travel by the next academic year.

Name of Activity: AIChE Regional Conference Date of Activity: 4/16/16 Purpose of Activity: To introduce Chemical Engineers to EWB History of Activity: New Number of Participants: 39 Students: 36 Male: N/A Female: N/A Club members: 3 Professional members: 1 Teachers: N/A Parents: N/A Cost of Activity: $0 Description of the activity: EWB members from UCR as well as a few from Cal Poly Pomona attended the AICHE Western Regional Conference held at UCR this year to describe what EWB was and how it could add some value to their lives. Alan, the professional member who set this up, was both an AICHE and EWB professional member, and wanted others to join EWB because he believed it added to their professional development. We spoke on our projects and then had a workshop after where we broke into groups of 5 and discussed the idea of going to a 3rd world country where water would have to be provided from a river 5-10 km away, and the challenges that may arise. Evaluation of the activity: It went well despite have very little information on what we would be doing. Alan (the professional member we were working with that asked us to join him at the AICHE conference) did seem to have an idea on what he was doing as he had done this before and so he helped lead us. Students filled out a questionnaire after and a majority found the panel very informative.

Maybe we can set up early and try to figure out setting up everything early instead of delaying the event next time.

Academic Development Activities During the academic year, EWB at UCR has hosted Study Jams with the BCOE-LC committee to help foster collaboration between students that have a strong desire to understand materials in preparation for their finals. Students were also involved in the research and development of our domestic projects on campus and with our international project. Many general meetings consisted of committee breakout sessions which allowed students to meet and research information on designing the projects or funding for the projects.

Assessment of Goals Goals:

1. Goal 1: Increase professional development events for members.

g) Very successful as we gave the members variety in events.

h) Relationships forms with others organizations as we hosted joint events with several clubs for the second year in a row.

i) We would like to collaborate will more clubs next year to provide more events off campus and a wider variety of opportunities for our members.

2. Goal 2: Provide more opportunities for club development.

d) Successful as we fundraised a large amount of money for our projects through our food

fundraisers. e) We would like to have more large scale fundraisers to be able to raise more money for

our international project to be able to travel to the Philippines. f) Successful in that we had great events to get to know our members. g) There is room for great improvement to keep members for the entire year through the

entire year.

3. Grow as a chapter by participating in conferences.

c) Extremely successful as we were able to participate in two conferences. d) We would have liked to get more members at these conferences, which is where

fundraising is needed. e) We also thought about having a professional development event about networking at

conferences to teach our members before they go to these conferences.

Conclusion The events that were created by EWB at UCR during the 2015-2016 academic year have been

extremely successful. These goals include increasing professional development events for members, providing more opportunities for club development and growing as a chapter by participating in conferences. Overall, the 2015-2016 officers performed their tasks adequately, and the quality of their work can be seen in the EWB events that were held during the academic year. Our membership has increased dramatically since previous years. EWB-USA focuses on International Projects and fosters creative leaders within their organization. The professionalism and growth of our chapter has continued since the 2014-2015 academic year due to the hard work and efforts of the officers from the last two years. EWB at UCR is unique compared to other EWB chapters because it emphasizes not only our projects, but our outreach events and professional development events. In our efforts to grow stronger relationships with other EWB Chapters and the BCOE Community, we have done our best to reach out to these groups for both guidance and partnerships.

This year we had 43 events, with a focus on professional and club development events. Our

active members attended at least one social, fundraiser, outreach, or project event and attended an adequate amount of general club meetings. This has improved since the previous year.

Organization collaboration was the biggest success for the 2015-2016 academic year. We

successfully hosted the second BCOE Annual Trivia night, which comprised of 24 students making 5 competitive teams. We hope to continue this event to foster collaboration with the BCOE community. Our organization also hosted several professional development and social events with other BCOE and UCR organizations. It was an honor and a privilege to work with other organizations and collaborate with SWE, IEEE, NSBE, AIChE and the SHPE.

Another success was the continuation Gazebo project at the UCR Community Garden. Another

major success for our organization this year was our first International Project in Bohol, Philippines winning the EPA P3 award. With our design team we were able to raise over $30,000 for the projects future research and international travel. We have also coordinated with the CEO of the International Deaf Education Association (IDEA) to establish a location where we will be able to provide our services. In the upcoming year, we hope to take the first international trip to assist students of IDEA to build homes with our rice husk particle board.

This year we were able to host an event at the AIChE Regional Conference and encourage

Chemical Engineers to join to their local EWB chapters on campus. We received great feedback from the workshop attendees, hearing that the event was very helpful. The EWB West Coast Conference was a great networking conference and the AIChE Conference gave us the chance the reconnect with those members.

EWB is a non-profit organization that opens up excellent opportunities for BCOE students to

work with communities in both international and domestic settings. Our overarching objective was to foster an atmosphere that encourages more of the BCOE community to go beyond the borders of academia and Riverside activities. Thank you for setting aside time to read this comprehensive report of EWB at UCR in 2015-2016. We hope you will strongly consider EWB at UCR for an award at the BCOE Banquet.
