How Do Endowments Work?

Every year loyal alumni and friends of Ohio State establish endowments that fulfill their wish to make a difference in the university’s future. The principal is preserved in perpetuity, and 4.25 percent of the average market value per share during the past seven years is spent annually. Funds total approximately $2.1 billion in market value and consist of more than 4,000 individually endowed funds.

Who Manages the Endowment?

The Office of Investments, under the guidance of the Investment Advisory Group of the Board of Trustees, is responsible for managing the endowment. The university strives to earn the highest possible return from interest, dividends, realized gains and market value increases while maintaining an appropriate level of risk. To do this, the services of external investment managers are utilized. Both the Office of Investments and the Investment Advisory Group of the Board of Trustees closely monitor the performance of the endowment portfolio with re-allocation occurring as needed.

The overriding philosophy guiding all decisions relating to management of the endowment is to

preserve the principal’s real purchasing power and provide financial support for the long-term use and benefit of the university as designated by donors. An additional goal is to produce an acceptable return as it relates to current market conditions, balancing reasonable growth with risk.

How Is a Fund Established?

Newly named funds are established by the Board of Trustees upon receipt of a gift of $25,000 or more for an unrestricted endowed fund and $50,000 for a restricted endowed fund. Gifts are held in a pending endowment fund until the principle balance reaches the minimum funding level. Interest earned during this time becomes available for use or reinvestment once the university’s Board of Trustees approves the fund.

Endowment descriptions are approved by the donor, the university department that is proposed to administer the fund and the Board of Trustees.

The endowment operates similar to a mutual fund. Each named fund owns a number of shares in the University Endowment Fund based on the value of gifts to that fund. Representing

The Ohio State University requires substantial, consistent and permanent funding and, by receiving such funds, the university can

continue to provide strong academic programs and innovative technology. Endowment funds embody such a need.

An important objective that guides the investment of the University Endowment Fund is to preserve and maintain

the real purchasing power of the fund’s principal.

Gifts are invested in perpetuity, and distribution from the invested contributions is used to fund important programs and activities. A portion of the distribution may be reinvested in the fund at the request of the donor or department to further enhance the fund’s buying power over time. All endowed fund gifts at Ohio State are pooled together with other long-term university assets to form the Long-Term Investment Pool. Within this pool are well diversified U.S. and international investments that include:

• Equities

• Fixed Income

• Real Estate Natural Resources

• Private Equity

• Absolute Return/Hedge Funds

Endowment?What is the Endowments at The Ohio State University

Endowments may support teaching and research, departmental or interdisciplinary programs, student experiences outside the classroom and facilities, such as libraries, laboratories and classrooms. They also may serve to honor or memorialize someone loved and respected. The endowment description identifies how funds shall be used and ensures donors’ wishes and the university’s needs are both met.

In addition to providing support for students, faculty and programs at Ohio State, the endowment also supports University Advancement, which is responsible for the cultivation and stewardship of all private giving to the university.

Page 4: Endowment Guide - Home | College of Veterinary …...fund. Each named fund owns a number of shares in the University Endowment Fund based on the value of gifts to that fund. Representing

a uniform portion of the fund, the number of shares owned is used to calculate the distribution to each named fund.

The following allocations support University Advancement activities without affecting the endowment or individual fund’s principal:

• A one-time assessment equal to the first six months of distribution on newly approved endowed funds;

• An annual fee of approximately 0.75 percent of the endowment portfolio based on a seven-year rolling average of its market value;

• Investment of a portion of unrestricted gifts in an endowed fund.

The Office of Financial Services assesses an annual fee of approximately 0.25 percent of the endowment portfolio based on a seven-year rolling average of its market value for the management of the endowment.

Named Fund Administration

The endowment description, authorized by the university’s Board of Trustees when the fund is established, states each named fund’s purpose. Each fund is administered by the college or university department designated by the donor(s) and the Board of Trustees. It is the college dean’s or the department chair’s responsibility to make expenditures from the fund under directions set forth in the endowment description.

If distributions are not used in a given fiscal year, the college or department may carry the balance forward into the next fiscal year for purposes specified in the endowment description; or the unused distribution may be reinvested to principal, thereby securing additional shares. To obtain additional shares, some endowment descriptions automatically require unused distribution or a portion of annual distribution to be returned to principal.

Endowment Allocation Model

In June 2009, the Ohio State Board of Trustees approved a new, more flexible asset allocation for the university’s endowment. The new policy was designed to allow for more flexibility and better risk and liquidity management, as well as to provide a greater degree of opportunism in the day-to-day management of the fund. The new asset categories consist of market exposure (all of the university’s global equity managers, regardless of the countries in which they invest); risk reducers (fixed income and lower volatility hedge funds); return enhancers (private equities, distressed debt, venture capital and credit opportunity funds); and inflation hedges (real estate, energy, timber, agriculture, commodities and infrastructure).
