What is customization? Our trusty Merriam-Webster dictionary defines it as “to build, fit, or alter according to individual specifications.” I’m a big fan of customization because we all want to get the most out of our gear for peak performance. Out of all the equipment that I’ve used, I honestly think that the bike has the most

number of customization options in my arsenal. From size, color, and components, the possibilities are limitless. There’s one man who stands out in the crowd when it comes to bike customization, and his name is Ricky Ledesma. Rickyled, as we fondly call him, builds some of the components from scratch to suit his unique style. If the manufacturer doesn’t have it, he will build it. We’re picking his brain, and featuring his gear in this month’s cover story. We also feature Markus Storck of Germany. Storck is often referred to as “the crown prince of carbon fiber” because he is the master bike-builder of Storck Bikes, which has a wide array of superbikes. With mountain bike-riding surging in popularity, we also feature the different types of mountain bikes to give you a better understanding of which bike to choose if you’re in the market for one. Have fun on your journey. See you on the road!

For me, this year is marathon madness. I’m in training for my third marathon of 2015, the Osaka Marathon in October. It’s often advised that you shouldn’t run more than two marathons per year. But I believe that with proper training and

recovery backed by mileage in my legs from years of marathon running, you can actually break this rule…sometimes. (Disclaimer: Do NOT follow my lead!) If you’re neck deep in training, the articles in this issue are relevant and helpful in improving your performance. Coach Armand Mendoza provides a guide to compression gear in the market and discusses its benefits. Sports nutritionist Harvie de Baron uncovers the dirty truth about five terrible food and drink to stay away from and offers healthier alternatives. We demonstrate more efficient exercise options for your regular strength and conditioning routine. Good luck with training! Go kill it at the races!

DO YOUR OWN BIKE CHECKIT’S THE TRUSTY STEED THAT BRINGS YOU HOME SAFELY TO T2 OR ANY CYCLING

DESTINATION. KEEP “WALTERS” IN MIND THE NEXT TIME YOU CARE FOR YOUR BIKE. BY DENNIS GARRET LEE

Wash As with any other thing in the world, with constant use, or the lack of it, a thing such as a bike gathers dust or dirt. A proper wash maintains its function and looks. Take this time to closely inspect the bike for any unseen damage under the grime. Avoid using high-pressure washers and certain soaps or detergents that may damage some seals and wash away lubricants. Bike-specific liquid washes like Muc-off, Shimano bike wash and Pedros are available but the usual water, bucket and a sponge will do.

Adjust When it comes to power transfer, it’s the drivetrain that needs adjustment. This consist of your front and rear shifters and their corresponding derailleurs that enable smooth shifting of gears, avoid chain breakage and premature wear and tear on your chain rings and cogs. Cockpit adjustment like proper handle bar positioning and seat height adjustments will also help in rider comfort in long rides.

Lubricate All moving parts require the reduction or elimination of friction. This is true for crucial bike parts like bottom brackets, hubs, headsets, and suspension forks and shocks. These can be done by an experienced gearhead, but it’s best left to the bike shop professional if you are unsure of your abilities with the wrench. The most basic and easiest part to be lubed is the chain. Choose a weather-specific lube (wet or dry) and apply as needed.

Torque properly Carbon fiber parts and bike frames are popular nowadays. It is important that you follow the manufacturer’s torque recommendations in installing carbon fiber parts because you might end up over torqueing them and compromise its structural integrity. Take note though, alloy or aluminum based parts are not also immune from over torqueing.

Evolve Learn. The internet and print media are chockfull of information that would let you learn how to do basic repair and maintenance for your bike. Knowing the different parts of your bike and how to maintain it is essential in prolonging your bike’s lifespan and

it’ll save you time and money going to the bike shop for a simple twist of a bolt or screw.

Ride You read it right. You got the bike, ride it. Use the bike for what it was intended for. Acquire new bike skills like bunny hopping, track stands, cornering and other essential riding skills that will help you maximize usage of your bike. The more skilled you are, the safer it is for you and your bike.

Shop Visit Most of us aren’t mechanically inclined, but a visit to your favorite shop for a thorough check up and some serious washing to be done by their personnel gives you a sense of owning a new bike. Visiting the shop at least once or twice a month for maintenance is a good practice. While you’re at the shop, observe and ask questions, most bike mechanics are friendly and helpful. Wheel alignments, fork servicing, and bearing overhaul for full-suspension bikes are some of the required services if you ride often.

DENNIS GARRET LEEDennis Garret Lee is an avid mountainbiker that has dabbled in the sport six years ago. He is also a runner, joining marathons and ultramarathon events. He participated in downhill and enduro mountain bike races plus one triathlon event abroad two years

ago, but his love for digging trails and riding the mountains of his home province Benguet has kept him on the ”dirty” side of bike riding. He has also played a part in acting as a stunt double for local actor Dennis Trillio for his up and coming movie Padyak Love.

You may have heard the term “Paleo Diet.” Going Paleo means returning to Paleolithic ways or “caveman” ways of eating which involves food that hasn’t been farmed, thus no grains and no processed foods. For a country that relies on grains as a staple, it’s a challenge to go full-Paleo. Check out this sample menu and see if you’d like to give it a shot.

BREAKFAST Tuna Omelette Beef tapa and steamed veggies Caulirice with Chicken BBQ Coconut flour pancakes

LUNCH Caulirice mixed with minced chicken Baked Salom and Veggies Caulirice with Chicken Tangigue steak and veggies

DINNER Rib eye steak and veggies Steak salad Smoked Salmon Salad Caulirice with seared tuna

SNACK Sweet potato fries Coconut milk smoothie Hardboiled eggs or mashed sweet potato

Raw mixed nuts (macadamia, walnut, cashew, etc)

✖ Canned Luncheon Meat

Did you know that canned luncheon meat contains up to four days worth of salt for an average man? And it isn’t even the good kind of salt (like sea salt or Himalayan salt which have good trace vitamins and minerals). Apart from excessive sodium, canned luncheon meats contain nitrates as preservatives. Nitrates are known carcinogens. And can you really identify what kind of meat and what meat part you’re eating when you stuff a forkful of it into your mouth?✔ Homemade Marinated Meat Make a meat viand from scratch where you control the ingredients. A hearty chicken barbecue or a tasty beef tapa recipe can be found on the Internet. Although it takes a little more work, it’s worth the time to make sure your only body doesn’t suffer from excessive amounts of salt and nitrates.

✖ Bottled Iced Tea & 3-in-1 Coffee

These have excessive amounts of sugar. In fact, one brand being sold at a popular coffee shop chain contains high fructose corn syrup, a sweetener derived from genetically modified organism (GMO) corn that is cheap to produce. Plus, most have artificial flavoring added. The overall healthfulness of the tea is overpowered by the bad ingredients.

✔ Green & White Tea These have antioxidants that fight free radicals in the body. If you want the full benefit, you are better off steeping a tea bag and adding a bit of pure honey to taste plus a squeeze of any acid fruit (lemon, orange, etc). Add some ice and you’re good to go.

✖ Frozen Yogurt & Yogurt Drinks

If you think about it, the natural taste of yogurt is sour due to the fermentation process. So, why does frozen yogurt taste quite sweet? Frozen yogurt usually has at least three types of sugars in it when made. ✔ Unsweetened Plain Yogurt Read the label and get the plain yogurt without sugar. If you want to sweeten it, reach for pure honey or unprocessed sugar like muscovado or coco sugar. Or add a sweet ripe fruit, like mangoes, puree these and add to the unsweetened yogurt.

✖ MSG Liquid Seasoning

The liquid seasoning you grew up with as a child has a lot of chemical additives that do more harm than good . Monosodium glutamate (MSG) is known to cause lightheadedness and is a migraine trigger for most people. In European countries, the chemical additives such as food coloring and flavoring (the “E-[number]” ingredients) even have warnings on

the label about causing hyperactivity and ADHD.✔ Bragg’s Liquid Aminos (available at most supermarkets) or Coco Aminos (seasoning made from coconut) are better alternatives. Bragg’s Liquid Aminos and Coco Aminos don’t contain neuro-disruptive chemicals and MSG.

✖ Canola oil Although canola oil is

cholesterol-free, the process to extract it uses hexanes and caustic soda. Oils that are processed and extracted with these are highly carcinogenic once ingested. The body is not built to process chemicals like hexane and caustic soda. Using chemicals to extract oils increase acidity in the body instead of promoting an alkaline environment. ✔ Culinary Coconut Oil Culinary coconut oil contains medium-chain triglyceride, which means it’s a fat that’s healthy for your heart. Culinary coconut oil also promotes an alkaline environment in your body because oil can be extracted well from coconut meat minus chemicals. Sans the chemicals, coconut oil is a perfect food that provides monolaurin, a natural substance that is also found in breastmilk. Look for culinary coconut oil that is made from pure coconut meat and not from copra (which is what most common grocery brands are derived from). You can find culinary coconut oil on downtoearth.ph.

COMPRESS FOR SUCCESSA QUICK GUIDE TO COMPRESSION GARMENTS FOR ATHLETIC RECOVERYBY ARMANDO MENDOZA JR. PTRP

ndurance sports coaches are always on the lookout for new technology in terms of gadgets, gear, and

garments that can help athletes recover faster and perform better. Among these are compression garments. These clothes that come in the form of tops, pants, and calf sleeves have flooded the sports scene, thanks to heavy marketing by big athletic brands.

The ClaimsCompression garments like sleeves and stockings have been used medically to treat disorders involving the veins and for reduction of muscular or post-operative swelling. But when it comes to relying on these clothes to speed up post-workout/competition recovery for the athlete, the jury is still out.

Here are some interesting claims of compression that hold promise in further research:→enhancing blood flow to the arms and legs→reducing blood lactate concentration during intense exercise/sports activities→enhancing warmup by increasing skin temperature→increasing vertical jump height→improving jump power→reduced muscle oscillation (muscle “jiggling”) upon ground contact→reducing muscle soreness in the days following strenuous exercise→increasing kinesthetic awareness during intense exercise or athletic movement→increasing the torque around the joint (movement force) hence improving performance and reducing risk of injury.

Get The Right OneCompression garment manufacturers face the tough challenge of creating a piece of clothing that will fit and mold to different body types despite their extensive size ranges from extra-small to triple extra-large. These brands consider limb length, muscle bulk, and girth measurements of a particular body to provide ample compression in a very specific region, whether it’s a calf, thigh, or arm. Try out several brands. Some big name brands like 2XU (PWX fabric) and Zensah (Seamless contruction & anti chafing)  invest in research to improve the supportive qualities of the garment. Take time to move around the store and get a good feel of the garment on your body and note the areas you feel it gives support to.

Some brands provide size charts but you’ll find the one that best fits if you try up to three different sizes and see which one works best for you. Improved athletic performance may not be evident instantly, but here are some criteria by which you can judge that piece of compression garment you’re about to buy:→It supports your working muscles based on the sport that you do: for instance, calf sleeves or socks for running and compressive shorts for cycling.→It provides compression on the muscles but not too much that it becomes uncomfortable and impedes blood flow, causing muscle weakness.→It has moisture-wicking properties and will not cause chafing. →It has graduated compression which is designed to have more compression on the extremities than on the top or trunk. This improves the return of bloodflow to the heart thus preventing overpooling of blood in the extremities which can cause swelling.

Special Considerations Be aware that some compression garments like shirts and pants may provide additional qualities like thermal increasing capability needed for cold weather training. Obviously, these types are not optimal in Philippine or tropical racing conditions. For increased effectivity, wear compressive garments after training, along with icing, ample rest, and elevating your limbs, to help speed up recovery.

Armed with PWX Power fabric and graduation compression, 2XU’s Unisex Compression Arm Sleeves will be your indomitable armor against upper limb swelling and stiffness. The said features are engineered to increase blood circulation, hence reducing pooling, and provide supreme support for the muscles and tendons in the forearm, elbow, and bicep. Its high quality garment offers topnotch moisture management, graduated compression for added support, and promotes removal of blood lactate from exercising muscles for faster repair.

COACH ARMAND is a graduate of Physical Therapy from De La Salle University with international certifications in personal training, lifestyle and weight management coaching, and a post-graduate

degree in sports coaching from the College of St. Benilde. He then pursued a motivational psychology course from the Ateneo de Manila University. E-mail: [email protected]

oing exercises that work only one muscle group is so old-school (unless you’re rehabbing an injury or strengthening weak muscle groups of your body). These days, each exercise should be done by as many muscles as possible. The more muscles that are used to perform an exercise, the

better, since your workout becomes more effective and efficient. Here are five common exercises that can transform and maximize your gym time for better results and athletic performance. You can perform these exercises one after the other (like a circuit).

DO THIS: ONE DUMBBELL GOBLET LATERAL STEP-UP NOT THAT: MACHINE LEG PRESS WHY: Promotes single-leg stability, works not just the quads but also strengthens the glutes, and promotes core stability as well HOW: Hold one of the heads of the dumbbell up vertically between your palms and bring it against your chest. Stand beside a step board on your right side. Lift your right leg and place it on top of the step board. Perform a step-up motion and raise your left knee to your hip. Bring down your left leg back to the floor and repeat. Switch leg by placing the step board on your left side. For more challenge, use a higher step board or plyo box. NUMBER OF REPS: 6 to 10 MUSCLE GROUPS INVOLVED: quadriceps, glutes, hamstrings, calves, and core

DO THIS: CABLE FULL-KNEEL UNDERHAND PULLDOWN NOT THAT: BICEP CURLS WHY: Works not just your biceps as majority of the work is done by your latissimus dorsi muscle (the one just below your armpits), and it also targets other back muscles as well as your core. HOW: With your hands facing your body, hold the handles (or bar) before kneeling in front of the cable machine and keep your arms straight. While contracting your glutes (your butt muscles) to engage your core, pull the bar down until the handles touch your chest. Slowly return to the starting position and repeat. NUMBER OF REPS: 6 to 10 MUSCLE GROUPS INVOLVED: back, biceps, glutes, and core

DO THIS: PUSH-UP PLANK POSITION WITH ALTERNATING SHOULDER TAPS NOT THAT: FRONT PLANK WHY: Pushup plank promotes more stability as well as anti-rotation control. HOW: Start in a pushup position, lift one hand and tap your opposite shoulder. Return to the starting position then repeat tap with the other hand. NUMBER OF REPS: 10 taps per shoulderMUSCLE GROUPS INVOLVED: Shoulders, triceps, abdominals

DO THIS: STABILITY BALL LEG CURL NOT THAT: MACHINE LEG CURL WHY: The Stability Ball Leg Curl works the hamstrings while strengthening the glutes and promoting core stability as well HOW: Lie on your back with the 65cm to 75cm stability ball on your heels. Lift your hip by contracting your glutes (butt muscles) while pulling the ball towards your body. Don’t let your hips drop as you curl your leg. Straighten your leg by bringing the ball back to the starting position without letting your hip touch the floor. NUMBER OF REPS: 6 to 10 MUSCLE GROUPS INVOLVED: hamstrings, glutes, lower back

DO THIS: STABILITY BALL KNEE TUCK NOT THAT: CRUNCHES WHY: Promotes shoulder stability and strengthens the core HOW: Lie facing the floor with the 65cm to 75cm stability ball on your tummy and your hands in a pushup position. Work your way forward until your feet are on top of the ball. Brace your core to keep your back flat. Bring your knees towards your chest while trying not to raise your hips. Straighten your legs back to the starting (pushup) position and repeat. NUMBER OF REPS: 6 to 10 MUSCLE GROUPS INVOLVED: abdominals, obliques, triceps, and shoulders

COVERSTORY

e live in an era where fitness is not just a pastime but a way of life. The weekend warriors have morphed into amateur athletes with the urge to step up their game: from routine weightlifting to

circuit training; from running to multisport.

EARLY TRIATHLON DAYS“A secret sect,” is how Ricky Ledesma, erstwhile triathlete, describes the triathlon in the Philippines, circa-1990s. Ledesma, then in his late 20s, was among a hundred triathlon-crazy Pinoys including Raul Cuevas, Nonoy Jopson, Peter Gonzales and Loi Rafols among others, who emerged from their day jobs and met twice a year to race distances ranging from Olympic to the Ironman-distances. His love affair with triathlon began in 1996, when he signed up for his first sprint distance in Ateneo de Manila on the prompting of triathlon champ Noy Jopson. Training for triathlon wasn’t a stretch for Ledesma, who was into the active lifestyle thanks to tennis and badminton. The dismal outcome of his first race did not discourage him. In fact, he fell in love with the sport even more. “When it [triathlon] is passion-driven, you will really see it through,” says Ledesma. “Not like when it’s a job, you get paid to do it. Unlike this one, you exhaust all efforts to make things happen even if you don’t get paid,” he adds. Raul Cuevas of Bike King Philippines, then asked Ledesma in 1997 to help out in creating and organizing triathlons. Ledesma’s background in architecture came in handy in plotting the race courses and designing the maps. He took charge of logo creation down to other details like race

kits to give triathletes a memorable race experience. As triathlon grew in popularity so did the demand for more quality races. Ledesma’s experience was tapped by other organizers such as Eric Imperio of eXtribe, Inc., and Sunrise Events, which brought in the Ironman 70.3 and XTERRA franchises to the country in 2009. His involvement in race organization took a backseat in November of 2014 when his wife fell ill and he refocused on family and his architectural profession. However, there were no regrets laying low. Ledesma feels he’s made his contributions to the sport. In more than a decade, the number of triathletes has grown from 70 to 2,000 notwithstanding expensive gear required and registration fees. Thanks in part to mass-market running events, the craving to pursue not just one but three disciplines via triathlon has increased. “The growth is supported by the presence of the major brands having distributors here. Bike and multisport shops are sprouting everywhere so the thirst for new and current equipment will be available to the growing sport,” says Ledesma. “There are a lot of coaches to guide newbies and old timers. They are essential in the sports’ proper direction,” he adds. The challenge of Philippine triathlon lies in its race calendar. Ledesma hopes future events can be spaced out. “I never had the chance to tell them to get their [organizers] heads together and schedule the races properly,” Ledesma says, adding that it would allow triathletes to race as much as they wanted, and not have to cherry-pick.

“IF YOU CAN’T BUY IT, BUILD IT.”Ledesma’s niche in Philippine triathlon lies in the products he’s created. Mediocrity is not in his vocabulary. Every item used in the sport should have the proper proportion and functionality. As a kid, Ledesma had a keen eye for detail. One day, his dad took him to a bike shop, and instead of getting the one on display, he had his bike custom-made. He designed his first BMX bike with a monoshock suspension. In the 80s when Ledesma was a cycling enthusiast, he was inspired by Tour de France champion Laurent Patrick Fignon’s helmet that was designed to improve aerodynamic efficiency. He was a fresh graduate then in 1985. He couldn’t afford such a helmet, so he made his own from fiberglass. He tried to be as faithful as

HOW WE GOT THOSE SHOTS

Professional photographer Jijo De Guzman tells us how he executed this month’s cover shot with master customizer, Ricky Ledesma.

“Ricky and his customization efforts blazed the trail when road biking and racing were still in its infancy in the country. “We wanted to highlight Ricky but still show enough of his surroundings to complement the look and feel we were going for. The concept for the shot excited me because we would get to play a lot with lighting. We shot in Ricky’s garage so we had a little ambient lighting from the sun spilling on to the set. I made sure that I got the ratios and temperature right. “ Ricky and I first met in 2011 when I covered my first triathlon organized by Bike King. He’s a very nice fellow who is well respected in the industry. Shooting him was much more like a fun reunion than work. I had a blast.”

possible to the original design. Using a plastic kiddie helmet as a base, he attached styrofoam pieces to the back to create the mold. Voila! He made his very first aero helmet, which served its purpose in a bike race from Luneta to Tagaytay. The homemade helmet became an object of envy among other riders, who even offered to trade in their 19,000-peso disc wheels for it. Today, he creates solutions for triathlete problems such as hydration, storage bins, and cable covers. His mantra is: “Form follows Function.” Practicality comes first; then, the aesthetics—a sleek look inspired by Formula 1. He maximizes all the spaces he can find on a bike, and integrates his design solutions to “make it look like a part of the frame”. For instance, he added a modified draft box at the back of his red Specialized S-Works Shiv to keep his spare tire, gels, and air. Below the cockpit, he installed a nose cone to hide exposed wires and

easier access. Everything is lovingly done by hand. To gear freaks dismay, he has no plans of turning his customized gadgets and gear into a business. His projects land on online forums and get international attention. A good example would be his P5 storage box. “I posted it on the famous website, Slowtwitch. When I woke up, there were 10 orders. ‘Can you make me one?’ ‘I’m from Finland.’ ‘I’m from Italy,’” Ledesma recalls. “But I realized I’m not a production guy. I’m just doing this for myself. There were some [forum members] who I got attached to because of long conversations. So I say, ‘Okay, I’ll make one for you.’” Ledesma encourages triathletes, even newbies to review their gear, and make adjustments as they see fit. His foray into customization began with his passion for the sport. Not hindered by the lack of resources, he did everything he could to optimize his riding experience. “If you can’t buy it, if you can’t find it, build it. Don’t be afraid to explore!” he says. “If you have enough creative juices in you, it will drive you to make the stuff you want. Anything imagined has to be realized.”

IF YOU CAN’T BUY IT, IF YOU CAN’T FIND IT,

BUILD IT. DON’T BE AFRAID TO

EXPLORE!prevent drag. “I don’t like it when the cables are all exposed. So I try to make fairings to hide them from the wind. Any exposed straw slows you down. I’m not fast anymore but I want things to look good,” says Ledesma. In his P5, he installed a sleek storage box at the down tube with two cables to keep the cover in place. Screwed right onto the top tube is another slot made of rubber for

eroes Bike Trail is one of the popular trails ensconced in Metro Manila’s Libingan ng Bayani. As a city-based trail, it allows easy access to bikers from the immediate area and is a feasible

choice for city dwellers to ride at a moment’s notice. The amenities and trail itself have changed gradually over the years. Now, there’s a little store within a covered rest area where riders register before riding and buy snacks and drinks between loops. As you enter through Bayani Road, you’ll find that parking space is ample and restrooms are coming up soon. The single-track Heroes Bike Trail runs clockwise and consists of features that add variety and challenges for newbies to hone their skills or for experts to up their game. Stage 1 and Stage 2 of the trail cover a length of +/- 2.3 kilometers. Stage 3 is being completed and should be ready in the near future. For first-timers, a warm-up round of this relatively small loop is highly recommended to familiarize yourself. You can then take the succeeding loops with more confidence and put on some speed if you wish.

STAGE 1The starting point is at the main entrance of the trail beside the welcome sign. You are greeted by several twists and turns with a few berms and humps thrown in. After passing a cut-out section of earth, you traverse two small bridges that open up to a downhill, giving you momentum for the first climb. As you reach the top of the hill, you are rewarded with a longer downhill run that has a few sharp corners, so stay alert. The next ascent takes you through curves that eventually run downhill again and speeds you into the first tunnel that passes under one of the previous bridges. A straightaway follows but surprises you with a hairpin turn through another cut portion of earth that continues to the next tunnel-under-a-bridge. The trail then veers left to an intersection that allows you to proceed to the exit or onto the next stage.

STAGE 2As you continue, a slight ascent takes you to a series of longer twists and turns that meander gradually up the next hill. The next part of the trail is another easy climb that brings you to a descent headed towards a wooden bridge, This is then followed by a succession of wider twists and turns that alternate with easy ascents and descents. You encounter the last wooden bridge that signals the final twist and leads you to the straightaway with three jumps. You can choose to safely roll over them or go for air if you’re a more experienced rider. The last series of turns have two more jumps before the downhill

home stretch. There are two ramps with drop-offs for experienced riders with the proper bikes, with a safer flat-trail option that runs alongside. You then exit at the start area of Stage 1. The Stage 3 trail will begin adjacent to the Stage 1 entrance and adds another +/- 1.5 kms to the total trail.

BECAUSE IT’S NOT JUST “A BIKE,” BUT AN AFFORDABLE, ENJOYABLE, WELL-CRAFTED MODE OF TRANSPORT THAT GETS YOU SMOOTHLY THROUGH THE ROUGHEST TRAILS. BY TJ PARPAN

A PRIMER ON MOUNTAIN BIKE TYPES

KNOW YOUR MOUNTAIN BIKE:

CROSS COUNTRY (XC) XC bikes are used for riding loops that include climbs, descents and varied terrain. The riding style is quick and responsive, so the bikes are also built to be light and stable. Hardtails are usually preferred for XC races since they can deliver better power transfer and still maintain a lighter weight.

TRAIL RIDING Majority of riders begin their MTB life doing trail riding. It starts as a very recreational type of riding but allows you to experience the varied features a trail usually offers. The riding is typically done on clearly marked trails within established trail centers or a series of routes that connect to one another after traversing more developed road networks. These are either hardtail (no rear suspension) or full-suspension bikes with a travel (the distance a suspension fork or a shock can compress) of four to six inches.

DOWNHILL (DH) This bike has a more sloping top tube and heavy-duty construction, with a travel of seven to 10 inches for dedicated DH riding. Due to its heavier weight, DH bikers typically travel to the start of the of descent and are not expected to bike to it. From there, they commence a fast downhill run that covers a relatively straight line while still going over rocks and even jumps. More body protection is required for this extreme type of riding.

FAT BIKE As the name connotes, this covers MTBs with tires of 3.8 to 4.8 inches of width. The fat tires are intended to run on very low pressures, to allow the greatest amount of surface contact on sand, dirt and snow to prevent sinking. Since the fat tire gives additional grip, as well as providing the suspension needed, it has gained popularity in providing riders access to trails previously impassable.

rowing up as a kid in the late 70s, I had a Bicycle Motocross bike, known more popularly as a BMX. The village where we lived still

had undeveloped portions that connected to dirt roads and rice fields. A BMX was the bike you could take to any road or trail. It was also these undeveloped areas that brought local Motocross riders to create tracks and eventually hold races there over the course of a few summers. We BMXers looked-up to those Motocross riders and took to their tracks when they weren’t around. Social media and Internet were non-existent back then, so little did my barkada and I know that what we were doing in Brookside Hills, Cainta was a reflection of the growth of BMX thousands of miles away, across the Pacific Ocean, in California. Other riders in California were modifying old cruiser bikes for off-road use. By using balloon tires, gears and BMX or Motocross-style handlebars, the mountain bike (MTB) was born.

The mountain biking craze has long landed on Philippine shores. The variety of terrain and trails across our islands and the inherent friendliness of Pinoys have added to the growth of the sport. Even without getting technical, the default stance of MTBs in general make them the most accessible to majority of riders and its setup allows the most versatility across different road and trail characteristics. But you probably already knew that. With a steady influx of affordable and high-end brands brought in by distributors, online forums and social media sites that give support to riders of all skill levels and build the community as a whole, the proliferation of online content to answer all your questions, and no shortage of trails to hit across the country, it’s a great time to be an MTBer! This established sport has also evolved to cater to specific riding disciplines. We feature the MTB types that have gained popularity.

ENDURO / ALL-MOUNTAIN (AM) Similar to trail riding, this riding style favors more experienced and aggressive riders. These bikes are used on trails that are more technical with jumps and bigger drops, so additional protective gear is a must. The bike’s construction is sturdier but still provides decent weight suitable for climbing and descending across varied terrain, and travel is within five to seven inches. There are enduro races in several formats that suite course characteristics and rider proficiency.

What piqued your interest in cycling?MARKUS STORCK: My parents had a bike shop. I started cycling when I was two and a half years old. At six, I received my first road bike.

At a young age, did you dream of building bikes?MS: I was more into sports. My grandfather was a former professional racer and my father raced as well. I started racing when I was six but in a medical checkup it was discovered that I was born with one kidney. When I was 13, I became very skinny and had to stop competing. So when I had to give up racing, I designed my first bike in 1977. At 22, I got my own company.

How did you start designing bikes?MS:The ability to design is a gift. Neither did I study for it nor did I get any degree related to it. I just thought that I had the right ideas, a sense of technical know-how, and the taste associated with designing so I just got myself into it. Some things randomly come into your life and you find out that you

“I just enjoy what I’m doing. It’s Leidenschaft, which means ‘passion’ in German. If you do something with passion then you can achieve much more than what you sought.”

have the talent linked to it. I hope that more people find out their talent in life.

You created the first all-carbon fork and designed the first full-suspension carbon mountain bike, as well as the first ever all-carbon cranks. You produce champions through your bikes, including one of the country’s premiere triathletes, John “Rambo” Chicano, who was on a Storck Scentron when he established the Philippine record for standard distance triathlon category, finishing at 1:55:37 during the 2015 Asian Triathlon Cup (ASTC) held in Subic Bay on April 26, 2015. How did you do all this?MS: I just enjoy what I’m doing. It’s Leidenschaft, which means “passion” in German. If you do something with passion then you can achieve much more than what you sought.

What is your personal favorite among the bikes you’ve owned or manufactured? MS: I have several. The Fascenario line, which was hailed as “The Best Bike in the World” for

several times by Germany’s Tour Magazine, is one. The Organic (the first full-suspension carbon mountain bike) is also very special to me, as well as the Aernario Signature, which came out last year in limited edition (only 50 were distributed worldwide). You used to be a huge distributor of Klein Bikes. When Klein Bicycles sold their company to Trek Bicycles, it affected you financially. How did you cope?MS: Actually I lost 60 percent of my turnover. If I think about it, it was painful but at the same time it was an advantage because it led to Storck’s rebirth. It was very inspiring because it fueled me to design the products that made us iconic.

You have a project called “One of Seven”, where you designed limited-edition products ranging from cars to wines, and more. Tell us about it.MS: We’re concentrating on what we’re doing for Storck but, Helena, my wife, and I also love watches, cars, and good wine, so we just went further and founded “One of Seven”. We came out with the first one, which was the McLaren cars, and we don’t know where this will bring us but seven is our lucky number. We got married on the 7th of July. We only produce seven pieces of each product. These will be lined up with some of the most luxurious products in the world. A good friend of mine who has a venture capital company said that I’m like the Karl Lagerfeld of technical goods and I thinks that’s interesting because Lagerfeld is a very creative person; an icon who brought something fresh to Chanel by making fashion available to younger people.

What else keeps you on the move? MS: Helena and I love nature, so if we have time, we spend it hiking or cycling. We also travel a lot. It would be nice to have a pilot license as well but, so far, I’m very happy. I enjoy what I’m doing.

What made you decide that the Philippines is ready for the Storck brand?MS: I can’t say a country is ever ready for something. I just think that Manila has people who are passionate about sports, about cycling.

What are you most proud of when it comes to Storck bikes’ technology?MS: I wish that more riders get the chance to ride on a Storck so they can experience the technologies we have developed such as proportional tubing (where you get the same ride, feel, and stiffness on a bike regardless of its frame size), parallel aerodynamic, and Directional Depending Stiffness. Everything we do is rooted on technical function. Our motto is “Form follows function”, which means you have to have technical reason and back it up with good design. The key is

Meet two triathletes who proudly proclaim their love for the sport with the Cervelo P5, their weapon of choice on the cycling leg.

RAYMOND RACAZATeam Gotta, Chief Operating Officer of Xurpas Inc., Community Editor, Endurance Sports

Why the P5? Racaza, Endurance’s community editor who goes by the moniker “The Racstar,” credits his Cervelo’s excellent geometry and stiffness in producing a ride like no other. He’s taken it on 200-kilometer rides that have gone without a hitch. Why customize? The color scheme and graphics pays homage to his successful mobile technology company, Xurpas. But Racaza feels the bike itself is an apt representation of their corporate culture: young, dynamic, agile, and innovative. A quote is also found on the top tube that reads “Go Big or Go Home.” This pretty much sums his approach to his personal and professional life. “I don’t want to do anything half-baked. If I’m passionate about something, I will put my heart and soul into it. Otherwise, I wouldn’t even try,” says Racaza.Where to get it done: Primo Cycles, +632 836-7455

TOM BRIGGSLead Graphic Designer, Cervelo Cycles

As the lead creative director at Cervelo Cycles, Briggs is the man behind the fantastic graphics that adorn the P5s of three of their sponsored professional riders: Ironman champions Caroline Steffen, Dave Mirra, and Frederik Van Lierde. The designs of each bike contain elements that are tied to the stories and personalities of the athletes. You can see his more of his work on https://www.behance.net/tombrigg

TYRONE REGALIZAPolo Tri Team, CEO of Peak Freight Solutions Inc., Fastlane International Logistics and Maxconstruct Inc.

Why the P5? Regaliza praises the P5 for its superb aerodynamics and power transfer. When he hammers it, he can just feel its speed that is not only evident on flats but carries though on rolling terrain as well. Compared to previous tri bikes he’s owned, Regaliza also says that the P5 is a better climber. Why customize? The inspiration to get a custom paint job came after seeing the P5s of pro athletes Dave Mirra and Caroline Steffen. On his bike frame, his trusty steed stands out with Philippine pride carrying the three stars and a sun motif, and the quote “Reach For The Stars” which echoes the work ethic he instills across his companies.Where to get it done: Teban Pontejos, +632 860-9058

Cardimax L-Carnitine, a supplement that helps improve mental and physical performance, the endurance race requires marathoners to complete a road course in a 50K loop (two loops for the 100K runners). The Clark Parade Grounds in the freeport zone are the ultramarathon’s start and finish line. The route will take participants along the main highways of the Clark Freeport Zone, passing through scenic spots along Sacobia River, Fontana Leisure Park, DongWang, and Nayong Pilipino. Runners are expected to experience the usual nippy night climate in Clark, and the sweltering heat as they pass through long stretches of paved, tree-lined roads. Last May 28, participants joined the “Harness Your Own Energy Training Session 1: Running Basics,” part of the race’s recommended training program to help runners meet their race goals come September. A second session held on June 20 focused on race essentials while the third one placed emphasis on race and balance via a tranquil-spurring yoga session. Together with Urban Ashram and Simple Hydration and event venue partners, Clark Development Corporation and 100 Miles Café, the fourth and final training session, which zeroed in on race preparations, was conducted last August 22, 2015 at the Clark Parade Grounds. The training sessions were spearheaded by veteran ultramarathoners Alfred delos Reyes, Daphne Codilla, Doodsie Mallari, Jerome Bautista, Jon Lacanlale, Victor Ting, Tin Ferrera, Coach Titus Salazar, and Wilnar Iglesia. For more details, visit clarkultramarathon.com.

AFFINITEA RAISE D’ ROOF JULY 5, 2015 | CCP COMPLEX, PASAY CITYPHOTOS COURTESY OF SARAH MORAN

More than 4,000 runners pitched in to raise funds for charity in the second year of the Affinitea Raise D’ Roof. Proceeds of the run, with the theme “More Than Medals,” went to the He Cares Foundation, a non-profit organization assisting street children in Metro Manila. The top 21K honors were a close photofinish by stellar runners. Nelson Elegeran, bested 843 other half-marathon runners with a finish time of 1:27.:07. Ruwell Hulleza followed six seconds after, and hot on Hulleza’s heels a split-second after was Archie Patubo. Other categories open were 3k, 5k, 10k, and 16k.

Raise D’ Roof, is the local milk tea brand’s way of helping the less privileged and promoting a healthy lifestyle for every family, said race organizer Mark Anthony Guzman Liu. The fun run was capped with a session of Zumba dancing for families and friends of the runners. There was also a “pledge wall” where participants stamped their palms on the wall in different paint colours as a sign of support for the He Cares Foundation. Mark your calendars for Affinitea’s December 6 event, the “Brown Race Marathon,” inspired by the concept of “Makabayan”. Its beneficiary will be the Aralpinoy.org Inc.

sports watch comes with a continually flashing LED, allowing you to see the

liquid crystal display easily even in the dark. Simply press the “Night” button for two seconds and the LED light will

start flashing for 30 minutes. Available colors: Green, Orange, Pink, White

Running and fitness enthusiasts can look forward to more budget-friendly choices in the sports

watch market with the launch of ASICS’s two new lines: the ASICS LED Night watch and the ASICS GPS watch. ASICS brand ambassadors and, at the same time, Southeast Asian Games silver medalists Mary Joy Tabal (women’s marathon) and Jesson Ramil Cid (decathlon) and long jumper Katherine Kay Santos were on hand to help launch the watches to

runners, bloggers, and the media. Judith Staples, ASICS marketing manager said that the watches are perfect for newbie runners looking for sports timekeeping devices that are within budget of the running public. “Challenge” and “Confidence” were the themes of the watches. The form factor features a wide, liquid-crystal display, and well-laid out buttons, making the watches easy to wear, view, and operate. Its advanced shape allows free movement of the wrist with minimal interference from the watch itself.

The ASICS LED Night Watch (P3,950.00) is available in green, orange, pink, and white. The “NIGHT” button, when pressed for two seconds, enables the LED light to start flashing for 30 minutes. It’s ideal for athletes who prefer running at night or for ultramarathon runners who start their runs way before the crack of dawn. The ASICS GPS Watch (P7,950), has a GPS location system that can function up to 10 hours and measures distance, speed, and pace. The runner’s data can be managed by dedicated Windows or Apple apps downloaded into their computers.

GUERILLA WARRIOR RACE 2015OCTOBER 25, 2015 | TIMBERLAND HEIGHTS, SAN MATEO, RIZAL

Hot on the heels of the challenging Urban Guerilla Race last April 15, is Guerrilla Warrior Race 2015 on October 25. The race, a true test not only of a runner’s speed but also of tenacity, kicks off at 4 a.m. in Timberland Heights, San Mateo with the 15-km, 18-obstacle “Warrior” course and the 7-k, 12-obstacle “Sprint” course. Obstacles involve water, fire,

mud, spider nets, barbed wires, high walls, tunnels, and other challenges, designed to test your physical strength, mental coordination, and resilience of spirit. All obstacles are mandatory. Racers who avoid or fail to complete an obstacle are assigned a penalty—30 burpees—which they must complete in order to advance. Failure to complete an obstacle and the associated penalty results in immediate disqualification. Organizers say this ensures that the race results are fair and square. You complete the course or you don’t. The races, now on its second year, are developed by True North Guerilla Race Inc., spearheaded by Philippine Army scout ranger, Col. Dennis Bumanglag. More than adrenaline and adventure, the Guerilla Race is also a benefit race. The race will donate part of its registration fees to the H.E.R.O. Foundation, which supports the education of our Filipino soldiers’ orphans. For more information, visit guerilla-race.com and facebook.com/GuerillaRace.

we don’t have Pro Tour teams (sponsored teams) because if we engage in it, we have to increase the bikes’ prices up to €600 (P30,000+). If that happens, customers have to pay for more but get less product value because the money they shell out will just go to the Pro Tour teams instead of towards developing the bikes. In my case, I’d rather that my customers get more in their product.

Have you tried cycling in the Philippines?MS: We cycled at Mall of Asia and covered 40 kilometers, which was fun. I really like how open and friendly the people are here. But if I were to envision Manila, I would love to have the people build more cycling passes and be more respectful towards cyclists and pedestrians, and the government to promote cycling. Consequently, cycling will lead to healthier people, friendships, and a better world.

What lies ahead for Storck in the coming years?MS: Last year, we were among those who were honored with the German Design Award, joining the ranks of Mercedes Benz, Audi, Deutsche Bank, Siemens, and Rimowa. It was a very touching moment for us. Now, we’re working on a new frame which we’re presenting at Eurobike (an international bicycle trade fair held annually in Germany). I have the biggest government-funded project, probably the most expensive bicycle development ever in cycling history. The amount that will be spent for this innovation, which will be produced in Germany, is over €10,000,000 (P400,000,000+) for frame development and this will be an electric bike in carbon fiber, with a frame that can be manufactured in just five minutes. I’m also highly interested in bike rental system for e-bikes or city bikes.

NEW BIKEZILLA STORE OPENSMAY 27, 2015 | ORTIGAS CENTER, PASIG CITYPHOTOS COURTESY OF BIKEZILLA AND RAIZA CABUGWANG

Bikezilla, one of the country’s premier cycling gear hubs, opened its newest flagship store last

May 27, 2015. Bikezilla’s expansion is keeping in pace with the fast-growing cycling market. The new store at Robinson’s Cyberscape Alpha in Ortigas, Pasig City offers bike services rendered by internationally trained personnel and state-of-the-art items such as SRAM products, which include RockShox, Avid, Truvativ, Zipp and Quarq. “The new location offers a wider space for our display area and directs more foot traffic to our store,” says Bikezilla manager Ado de Leon. Bikezilla’s Celestra building branch will be closed down by end-August, but the new location in Cyberscape Alpha will take up the slack and more. De Leon adds that the company is looking into expanding to the south of Manila and nearby provinces. For your cycling needs, drop by Bikezilla’s new store located at Unit 4A, G/F Robinson’s Cyberscape Alpha, Sapphire Road, Ortigas Center, Pasig City.
