New BuildingsIECC 2015

• IECC 2015: Denver adopted the IECC 2015 code on 3/7/16, which was effective on 9/12/16.

• Pre-wiring for EV’s: single family and duplex projects are required to either provide a car charging outlet, or at least provide a conduit to the panel and leave adequate.

• Energy Drawings: Architects and engineers have to provide separate energy drawings with their projects. • Faster review of the IECC requirements allowing both

the A/E team & our reviewers to focus on the IECC criteria making it more likely that compliance will occur.

• Easier for our inspectors to review for IECC compliance.

New Buildings:Proposed refund of permit fees for

Net Zero buildings

• Possible opportunity in the future • 100% fee rebate for Net Zero buildings• 25% permit fee rebate for LEED Platinum

buildings• Hopeful to finalize this before the end of this

year or early next year.

Net Zero Project Example:The National Western Center

Existing BuildingsThe $1.3 Billion Opportunity

- Lighting upgrades- Tune-ups (RcX)- Efficient heating/AC- Upgraded controls

The $1.3 billion saved is money that stay’s in the pockets of local businesses and recirculates here.

Who Benefits? Building Owners

Energy efficiency investments lower operating costs.

Increasing Net Operating Income

= A More Valuable Asset

Studies by CoStar verify this.

Who Benefits? Businesses

Efficient buildings can save tenants ~50 cents per square foot

For a commercial office tenant renting 50,000 sqft, that’s $25,000 in savings annually

Denver’s Energy Efficiency Programs

Voluntary Benchmarking Program – partnership with BOMA to recognize large commercial and multi-family buildings for benchmarking. ~5% of Denver’s square footage enrolled today.

Better Buildings Challenge: City buildings leading by example and saving 20% energy by 2020.

Watts to Water – partnership with BOMA to give awards to the most energy efficient buildings.

Lease for Efficiency Challenge - challenges local tenants to commit to ask about the ENERGY STAR score, or energy performance, of a building before they lease space in Denver.

38.3 million MMBTU

x 10% =3.8 million MMBTU

TaskforceGoal is to Reduce Energy Consumption this Much by 2020

• Double the 2020 goal by 2030 means another 3.8 million MMBTU reduction in energy consumption by commercial and multi-family buildings by 2030.
