Very low visibility.
Poor color rendering (CRI) 26-65.
Lower lumens per watt.
Human eye is less perceptive to these lumens.
Depth perception is affected.
Re-strike time of 10-15 minutes.
High operating temperatures.

Lumens drop off very quickly.
As high as 60% Depreciation at end of life.
Non-Passive failure is a safety concern.
Colors change (shift) over time.
T-12 HO and VHOT-12 HO and VHO
Older technology.
Harder to design a fixture to provide directional light.
Lumen depreciation is a problem.
More watts than are necessary.
Repeated on-off cycles shortens lamp life.
Magnetic ballast being discontinued.
T-5T-5Better Light Distribution.
Longer lamp life ( 35,000 hours).
Instant Re-strike.
Controllable with motion sensors.
T-5 has better maintained lumens.
Typically 50%+ in energy savings.
Why T-5’s WorkWhy T-5’s WorkT-5 lamps have a 5/8” cross section. This makes it possible to use parabolic reflectors for better optics to “put the light to work”.
Higher CRI of 85 increases the perceived visual brightness.
Scotopically and Photopically superior light source.
Are not a point source – glare is reduced.
There are less shadows because of the number of lamps contributing light to each point.

Conversion factors for lumens to pupil lumens Correction
factors applied to conventional values of lumens per watt yield a value for pupil lumens per watt, which is a measure of how effectively the eye sees the light that is emitted. The pupil is more receptive to light at the blue end of the spectrum.
Why Measured Lumens Why Measured Lumens Mislead.Mislead.
Light meters are calibrated to detect raw lumens.
The human eye cannot use many of these lumens.
High CRI and scotopic light sources are easier on the eye and reduce the strain of accommodation or holding the eye focused.
It has been shown that the eye doesn’t react to just raw lumens alone, but to the spectrum of light interacting with the cones in the retina.
Even with less lumens, enhanced light is perceived as brighter by the human eye.

HID's have significant lumen depreciation, which
will require premature lamp replacement to
maintain original light levels.

CONTROLSCONTROLSHID AND MAGNETIC BALLASTSHID AND MAGNETIC BALLASTS
Very limited because of warm-up and re-strike times.
For example: HID hi-bays in most facilities are left on all day even in un-occupied areas as they take too long to turn on.
High/Low controls systems can save some energy, however it is not linear between wattage and light output.

Because of instant “ON” motion sensors can be used to reduce burn times in often vacant areas.
In warehouses, burn times can potentially be reduced 30%-60% reducing maintenance cost.
Motion sensors are used on each individual fixture providing light only in occupied areas.
Daylight sensors (photocells) can be used where daylight from skylights or windows are present.
T-5 program start ballast allow up-to 50,000 starts.

Additional Savings Additional Savings Due to Reduced Cooling loadDue to Reduced Cooling load
HID type fixtures operate at very high temperatures.
Typical bulb wall temps can reach 450-500 degrees Fahrenheit.
T5 lamps operate at 92-100 degrees.
Lower operating temperature means less heat introduced into your coolers.
This can account for an additional 12-19% savings beyond the reduced lighting load.
