ENERGY! Energy cannot be created or destroyed, but it can change form. Energy Transformations What type of energy is oil? What type is a battery? What is a river? What types of energy can you think of? And more! Major Divisions of Energy Traditional vs. Alternative ____________________________ Renewable (comes from natural resources) Vs. Nonrenewable Sustainable (Energy which is replenishable within a human lifetime and causes no long-term damage to the environment.) Vs. Not sustainable There are positives and negatives to the different energy types. The trick is to find a balance that allows for life on Earth to continue, while still giving humans most of the things they want. Where does energy come from? The energy for life on earth comes from the sun. Remember learning about the food chain in your biology class? Photosynthetic organisms transform light using photosynthesis. There is heat energy within the earth. Geo= Earth Thermal= Heat Geothermal Fossil Fuels Carbon compounds from the carbon in plants that have been fossilized. OIL COAL NATURAL GAS PEAT Sources of Energy Perpetually available: sunlight, wind, wave energy Renewable over short periods of time: timber, water, soil, wildlife? These can be destroyed. Non-renewable resources: Oil, coal, minerals These can be depleted Choose a type of energy to research next Thursday, then share information on Friday. Which do you want to teach about briefly? (just a minute or twomaybe 3-5 slides) Choose a topic. Choose your topic! Oil Natural Gas Coal Nuclear Bioenergy Geothermal Hydropower Solar Wind Hydrogen Coal-based fuel Wood Batteries - different types Waterwheels Biomass Tidal More!!
