The Drilling & Workover operations manage processes which have the potential to adversely affect human life and/or the environment. The risk has been significantly mitigated by ensuring that all safety systems are effectively kept in place. With the enormous expansion of the rig fleet in Development Drilling and Workover Group, the need to develop an even more robust and fail proof safety system has been recognized well ahead of time. In spite of consistent campaigns for HSE compliance, many crews are often caught in unsafe acts. To minimize such acts, the TL-Drilling & Workover (IV), Mohannad Al-Mehailan, conceptualized a new approach which has been implemented for the first time in the Company. The program is an approach to improve safety performance through psychology. Proper implementation of this safety program will soon surpass the effectiveness of some traditional safety programs. The program involves a jacket with a slogan on its back “Caught in Unsafe Act… KOC needs you…”, which is kept under the custody of the KOC personnel on the rig. Any person caught in an unsafe act must wear the jacket as a penalty for the violation until another person is caught doing some unsafe act. It labels the person as a violator, who is then seen as an odd man out among the crew members. The result is that all crew members are motivated to increase their HSE awareness, and to develop better HSE attitude and culture. The program was launched for the first time in KOC at rig KDC-38, and it has yielded remarkable results as the number of near misses and incidents has declined substantially.

Normally, the Committee holds its meetings in the Oil Complex, but with the implantation of the “Ro’aya” program, which integrates the oil sector, the Committee decided to rotate its meetings among the K-Companies.
