Volume 5 | Issue 4 | 30th September 2016 Prayer for the week 'Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your mind in Christ Jesus." Philippians 4:67 Harvest Festival got the week off to a beautiful start (or end depending on where you view Sunday). It was a real joy to see the Year 7 process in with their offerings and present them to the School Captains and Major Ralph from Luton Salvation Army. The chapel was absolutely packed to the rafters and as a result the atmosphere in the service was very positive. Our thanks go to all the Year 7 pupils and their parents who contributed so generously, which the Salvation Army will distribute to those most in need. Inter House Cross Country as always was an incredible whole school event planned and organised by members of the PE department and coordinated by Mr Day, Head of Goddard House. The overall winner of the event was Monk House with the fastest runner being Jeremy Dempsey (Year 12 – Goddard,) who broke his own previous school record by completing the 5km in 18 minutes 14 seconds. On Thursday evening, following a long school day, all the boarders gathered in the Assembly Hall, with boarding staff, senior leadership and governors for our inaugural St George’s Boarding Conference. The purpose of the conference was to involve the boarders directly in developing the school’s boarding strategy in to the next decade and beyond. The evening with over 100 boarders involved was lively and very productive and I would like to thank Mr Timmins, Director of Boarding for his organisation of the great event. I am not sure if this is another first but Georgian Michael Oakeshott (1912 to 1920) is one of the philosophers to be studied as part of the contents in the new GCE AS and A level Politics. Oakshott is a fascinating but not much known figure. He was an English philosopher and political theorist who wrote about philosophy of history, philosophy of religion, aesthetics, philosophy of education, and philosophy of law. where he obtained an MA and subsequently became a Fellow. It is great to see his work being requiredreading of the A Level.

It was sad to be informed of the obituary of another Georgian, Terence Robinson. The register in theschool archive shows that Arthur Terence Robinson (Pupil Number 1290) was admitted to St George’sfrom September 1932 and left the school in July 1936. In his four years he is recorded as having playedfor the Cricket XI, the Rugger XV; been awarded both cricket and rugger colours, appointed HousePrefect and awarded the Victor Ladorum in 1936. He went on to have a very distinguished career in theRoyal Navy and he was awarded an OBE. Terence’s obituary was published in the Telegraph on 15thSeptember following his death, age 98, on 12th August 2016. To read his obituary click here.

6th Form pupil, Robbie Pope who won the Needham Essay Competition earlier this year was invited toattend the Beijing Publishing Group (BPG), Peking University (PKU) and the Society for AngloChineseUnderstanding (SACU) event ‘A Taste of China’ at the British Library in London. The Needham EssayCompetition is in memory of Joseph Needham. Needham’s biography by Simon Winchester, The ManWho Loved China was launched as one of BPG’s newly published books at ‘A Taste of Beijing’. TheBPG also added to their new publications an incredibly important book, I See a New China by GeorgeHogg. It is therefore doubly poignant that Robbie was one of the Needham Essay prizes this year.

I end on a congratulatory note as Mrs Nicola Moody one of our Art teachers has just received news thatshe has passed her MA in contemporary Textiles with a Distinction, so very well done to her.
