OUR DEFINITION OF GOOD LIGHT IS THE COMBINATION OF DESIGN, FUNCTION AND QUALITY.

AS MUCH AS NECESSARY, AS LITTLE AS POSSIBLE

We develop luminaires for the home that blend with the interior and give the light centre stage. A bold combination of metal, glass and light drives and inspires us.

SHAPE IS EVERYTHING

We start with an idea for beautiful luminaire shape. Once the form is defi ned, the development team at our Hennef site launches the design process. At this stage, we determine key factors such as lighting eff ects, the colour of the light and luminaire thermal management, all of which directly aff ect the quality and durabil-ity of our products.

PRECISE WORKMANSHIP

We work primarily with aluminium. Carefully worked to exact turning and milling specifi cations, all components have clean edges and an excellent fi nish. Premium coating and fi nishing en-sures a unique and durable luminaire surface.

CONSISTENT QUALITY OF LIGHT

Each luminaire is fi tted with specially developed LED modules that perfectly coordinate lighting eff ect and output. Our continu-ous, strategic quality assurance ensures that all LEDs used have the same binning (i.e. the same brightness and colour). This guar-antees uniform light emission across the entire illuminated area. Our luminaires for the home are generally warm white, with a colour temperature of between 2700 and 2950 kelvins.

LIGHT IS MAGIC. WE TURN SWITCHING ON THE LIGHTS INTO A MAGICAL EXPERIENCE WITH TOUCHLESS CONTROLS.

TOUCHLESS GESTURE CONTROLINNOVATIVE AND INTUITIVE

OLIGO was one of the fi rst luminaire manufacturers to integrate intuitive gesture control into its product range. This feature turns switching and dimming lights into a magical experience, and is testimony to the innovative quality of OLIGO luminaires.

Within a range of 10 centimetres, a sensor detects the position and direction of movement of your hand. Moving your hand under the luminaire turns it on or off . Holding your hand under the luminaire activates the dimming function, and you can ad-just the brightness.

The integrated control module is non-wearing, and in combina-tion with durable LED technology increases the luminaire lifetime. Other lights and signals from infrared remote controls do not aff ect the sensor or luminaire function in any way.

This innovative luminaire control system holds the Plus X Award for innovation and user friendliness.

THE SLEEP-TIGHT FUNCTIONSWEET DREAMS!

A number of our luminaires have a "sleep tight" function. "Sleep tight" is operated by a switch on the luminaire and is the per-fect way to turn it off : when sleep-tight mode is enabled, the luminaire will dim steadily after two minutes before switching off completely. You can see to get into bed and the gradual dims soothes and calms.

THE TOUCH DIMMERUSER-FRIENDLY AND ALWAYS WITHIN REACH

Another intuitive luminaire control feature is the touch dimmer. You can regulate luminaire brightness by simply touching the fi t-ting or cover.

Touch briefl y to switch on and off , or for longer to dim. Minimal potential diff erences between the luminaire and the user trigger a switch cycle in the integrated electronics system.

A microprocessor with special software evaluates the length of contact and adjusts the brightness accordingly. Not only can this feature replace additional wall dimmer switches - for example with pendant luminaires - you don't even need to get up to change the brightness.

TODAY − TOMORROW. INTELLIGENT LIGHTING SOLUTIONS CHANGE WITH THE TIMES.

THAT EXTRA SOMETHING

There are situations where you want to intensify or dim the light, or change its direction. Whether you are redesigning your sales area or moving house, lighting solutions need to be fl exible, and easy to adapt to new surroundings.

That is why OLIGO luminaires are not just beautiful - they are also smart. Wherever possible, we integrate smart functions for the handy use of our luminaires. For example fl exible luminaire heads, dimming functions and modular system luminaires.

IN THE SPOTLIGHT

For spotlights and single luminaires with lenses, you can adjust the width of the beam individually. As for the focal length setting of a camera lens, the front section of the luminaire head is adjust-able. Turning the luminaire head reduces the distance between the lens and the light source, and therefore the size of the area illuminated.

LIGHT AND GLASS: A FASCINATING DUO.

GLASS: A VERY SPECIAL MATERIAL

Many of our glass luminaire shades are one-off hand-blown pieces. Glass-blowing is a an art that demands skill, talent and exceptional care. The glass is heated to 2500 degrees Celsius and poured into metal moulds produced specially for OLIGO.

For the exciting texture of the BALINO luminaire shades, shards of coloured glass are melted onto the inside in a complex pro-cess. When cooled, this creates a beautiful crystal pattern. A fi nal coat of colour completes the work of art. Now all we need is light to bring the glass to life - dancing shadows and gently changing tones.

SATIN-FINISH GLASS

Satin-fi nish glass is now a popular material with architects and designers. It is made from clear glass, which is sandblasted to produce an opaque but translucent material. Perfectly even frost-ing is a key feature of satin-fi nish quality. This glass has a quite unique feel, and a particular way of diff using light to create soft and gentle illumination. Coloured satin-fi nish glass produces wonderful patterns on walls and ceilings.

ANODISED SURFACES

Anodising was originally used to prevent corrosion, but is now also an established process for fi nishing decorative surfaces. The workpiece is coated in a thin protective layer of oxide, just a few micrometres thick, using anodic oxidation. This layer is formed by the surface of the metal oxidising. Ground workpieces whose surface pattern is to be preserved must therefore be anodised extremely carefully.

POWDER-COATED SURFACES

Powder-coating is an established method for fi nishing metal surfaces that developed in the late 1960s from the conventional coating process of the time. Powder coating is typically used on steel, galvanized steel and aluminium. The process is automated, and is also employed in some areas of automotive manufacturing. Powder coating ensures an even surface colour, excellent surface strength and a consistent surface structure.

"GOLD LEAF" SHADES

Our "gold-leaf" surfaces are created by hand. Watch the "gilders" at work and you can see just what "wafer thin" means. As the beautiful shimmer on the surface is created almost entirely by the layered structure underneath, each piece is fi rst polished and ground by hand. Coating then protects the shade and gives the fi nishing touch to that beautiful sheen.

SPECIAL MATERIALS

"Concrete" and "stone" fi nishes on our shades and wall mounts look amazingly realistic. They are the result of intricate work by hand. A lightweight mineral composite is applied to the shade layer by layer, and carefully polished. Each luminaire shade is therefore unique, with its own individual character.

BRUSHED ALUMINIUM

A brushed aluminium surface can be created on a range of pre-treated aluminium workpieces. A range of brushes of diff ering thickness and hardness are used in line with the hardness of the material. The art to this process is brushing the workpiece so evenly that a consistent pattern is produced. For the best results, the process must be completed at one go without lifting the brush or changing direction.

POLISHED CHROME SURFACES

Producing the perfectly polished chrome surface requires at least fi ve separate processes. The item is polished, copper-plated, pol-ished again, nickel-plated and fi nally chrome-plated. The great shine on these products comes not from the thickness of the chrome layer, but from the layer of nickel underneath. Another option for shiny surfaces is polished metal.

TRANSPARENT GLASS

We use crystal glass for our transparent shades. Crystal glass was produced in Venice back in the 15th century, where it was marketed as "cristallo". The sparkling, colourless, highly refrac-tive glass can be produced in the perfect thickness without los-ing its transparency. Signifi cant diff erences in temperature can arise around a luminaire, and the shade must be robust enough to withstand these in the long term. We use borosilicate glass, which is highly resistant to sudden fl uctuations in temperature.

BLACK: A DARK TEMPTATION

Black is an eye-catching statement. Black sets off shapes, textures and proportions perfectly and is the ideal foil for accent colours.

Copper, silver, brass and gold accessories radiate warmth and re-fl ect the light - showing black to its best advantage. Black lumi-naires have always had an air of style and mystery. The constant interplay between dark and light never fails to fascinate and in-spire.

WHITE: CALM, CLEAR AND INVITING

White is the timeless classic of interior design. White is clear and calming, friendly and inviting. Combine white with a light par-quet fl oor or honey-coloured wooden furniture and you have a cosy, homey and yet absolutely stylish ambience.

Every colour scheme works with white: white is interesting and neutral as a contrast to black or grey, and stimulating with red.

RED: THE COLOUR OF HAPPINESS

In China, the colour red traditionally symbolises joy, the summer and the south. Red means happiness and is therefore often used for wrapping paper, invitations and all things festive.

In interior design too, red has an almost magical appeal. Red har-monises beautifully with grey or beige walls and pale wooden fl oors, and creates vivid contrasts. OLIGO red is dark and muted, reminiscent of amarena.

CHAMPAGNE: ELEGANT COOLNESS

Champagne: beautifully lustrous and yet subdued. Originally used as the colour of balls and banquets in haute couture, cham-pagne is now conquering the interior design sector.

Champagne harmonises perfectly with golden-yellow and shades of red. Great in combination with honey, cognac, turquoise, aqua-marine, apricot, salmon pink – and of course gold.

GREY: PERFECT FOR TONAL COLOUR SCHEMES

As the base colour for walls and fl ooring, or as the dominant shade in furnishing accessories, grey is a fl exible feature.

Our broad range of grey shades is perfect for all tonal colour schemes and as the base shade with a range of diff erent materi-als such as fabric, wood, concrete and stone.

CHROME: FOR ELEGANT INTERIORS

Luminaires with shining chrome surfaces are a stylish highlight. Chrome's appeal is its perfect shine – an appeal that makes it an interior design classic.

Chrome surfaces harmonise particularly well with strong shades from grey to black, and purple and blackberry tones. A chrome luminaire range can be the perfect complement to existing fi t-tings with chrome-plated components.

MATT CHROME: FOR TRUE AESTHETES, THE MEASURE OF ALL THINGS

Aesthetics is the measure of all things for 'matt chrome'. The satin fi nish gives surface a timelessly elegant sheen. Yet matt chrome surfaces are also so muted that they harmonise perfectly with almost any colour scheme, above all in combination with white.

ALL THE COLOURS IN THE WORLD?

Of course, we can't promise that. On request, however, we can develop individual colour schemes for your project-specifi c light-ing needs.

LED – INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGY IN INTELLIGENT DESIGN.

Progress in LED technology continues apace. LEDs are now an integral part of the modern home interior. The new role of LEDs is revolutionising the luminaire market, requiring buyers and manufacturers of high-quality, innovative luminaires to engage with this development.

LIGHT COLOUR / COLOUR TEMPERATURE

Colour temperature is as important in LED technology as white balance in digital photography. The issue is ultimately the same in each case, and is best explained with an example from nature: sunlight is aff ected by a range of factors. The colour of a sunset appears much warmer to the eye than the blazing midday sun.

Colour temperature is measured in kelvins (K). The higher the fi g-ure, the colder (bluer) the light. That is why we talk about warm light and cold light. What we fi nd pleasant in nature, however, is not usually what we want or need in our private living space. In the home, "cold" light (from c. 5400 K) is perceived as unpleasant. "Warm" light of 2700-3000 K, on the other hand, is perceived as "cosy". Yet there are areas (for example offi ces and in the food re-tail sector) in which completely diff erent colour temperatures are necessary or desirable.

COLOUR RENDERING INDEX

Each type of lamp (e.g. fi lament bulbs, fl uorescent tubes and hal-ogen lamps) has diff erent colour-rendering qualities. This means that light colours are not equally clear with all forms of lighting. At 2700 kelvins, incandescent bulbs have a Colour Rendering In-dex (CRI) of 100. High-quality LEDs can currently achieve a CRI of between 80 and 97. Depending on the area of use (for example lighting for paintings, food, etc.), a high colour rendering index can be absolutely essential.

TEMPERATURE MANAGEMENT

Contrary to popular belief, temperature is an extremely impor-tant aspect with LEDs. Although LEDs do not get nearly as hot as incandescent bulbs, the operating temperature is nonetheless central to the service life and other qualitative aspects of LEDs. A premium LED luminaire will therefore have advanced tempera-ture management. Comprehensive testing and development are an integral part of OLIGO's work on designing reliable luminaires. Many other manufacturers ensure the necessary heat discharge by producing enormous luminaires. With our extensive expertise, we achieve comparable or even better light output and quality – in elegant, delicate sizes.

SERVICE LIFE

With optimum temperature management, an LED today should have an average lifetime of up to 50,000 hours. This is equal to 17 years if used for 8 hours each day. LEDs are therefore often inte-grated into luminaires and do not have a lamp socket that would allow the user to change them. As well as coordinating product design and thermal management in product development, we are also committed to selecting the best possible LEDs to off er long-lasting and consistent light quality. The same applies to new LED lamps that are now available for standard lamps bases – LED retrofi ts.

27

LED lighting

Page 30: ENG 2015 EL Vorschaltseiten SCREEN3e980a01-187e-4300-af3a-86... · 2016-08-15 · all the advantages of industrial production - for example consist-ent quality, permanent availability

LED RETROFIT LAMPSIN DETAIL.

LAMP QUALITY IS ALSO KEY

"Retrofi t lamp" is the general term for energy-effi cient replace-ments for existing lamps. Retrofi ts have become increasingly im-portant as the ban on fi lament bulbs is phased in.

We recommend that you only ever use quality products from leading manufacturers. There are cheaper – and often poorer quality – products available on the market. An objective compar-ison of these products with brand lamps is not possible, as the former come with insuffi cient or indeed no technical data.

The information on light colour, lifetime and output for LED retro-fi ts should be taken merely as average values. With poorer quality products in particular, the tolerances are often extremely large as the manufacturers have neglected comprehensive product test-ing and classifi cation in order to keep the price down. This can mean that one and the same product can produce varying light-ing; this becomes obvious when several lamps are operated to-gether (for example in a corridor).

POINTS TO NOTE FOR RETROFITS

1. Does the new lamp have the same output (lumens) and the same beam angle (refl ector lamps) as the model you are replac-ing?

2. Does the new lamp fi t in the existing luminaire (shape/lamp base)?

3. Do existing accessories (for example glass shades and decora-tive rings) fi t over the new lamp, and could the temperature be a problem?

4. If your existing luminaires are operated with a dimmer switch, make sure that the retrofi t lamps can also be dimmed.

5. If you are retrofi tting a low-voltage system (for example track or cable systems), you may need to change the transformer.

6. LED retrofi t lamps are nearly always designed to be fi tted with-out housing. Enclosed luminaire housing can signifi cantly re-duce the specifi ed lifetime.

ENERGY EFFICIENCY RATINGS

Lamp effi ciency is defi ned in simple categories. The more lumens per watt of power a lamp emits, the more effi ciently it transforms the energy consumed into visible light.

Following regulations for large household appliances (refrigera-tors, washing machines, etc.), the EU also introduced mandatory energy labels for lamps in 2014.

These labels categorise lamps by effi ciency class. Class E (usually a red label) is the least effi cient. Energy classes go up to A++ (usually in green), which is the most effi cient category of lamp. For lamps, unlike for other appliances such as refrigerators, there are no more effi ciency classes than A++.

Whilst considering energy effi ciency and environmental friendli-ness, we should not forget the actual eff ect of the light itself: the right light is important to our general wellbeing.

Costs in terms of power consumption and the required atmos-phere should therefore be assessed separately. What the "right" light is is an individual, case-by-case decision. You should there-fore always seek objective, expert advice before implementing your lighting solution.
